This episode is clearly the one Gatiss was riffing off with ‘The Crimson Horror’.
Many people cite the Hinchcliffe (& Letts) era/s as the best. That’s partly due to them always running over schedule & over budget. It shows, doesn’t it? David Maloney’s direction is great, especially the film sequences.
Good costume design too, with the most unique of Tom B’s oufits – Sherlock Holmes! (See also – the Snowmen!)

The actress who plays Clara is now called Jenna Coleman. Last month I berated the BAFTAs for announcing her this way – and I’ve only just realised that it’s an official change. So presumably the alteration occurred the day after TNOTD was broadcast.
I must admit that I preferred the inclusion of ‘-Louise’. And JC doesn’t have the same ring to it as JLC either. Perhaps it was to avoid being confused with convicted domestic abuser, Justin Lee Collins?

Okay – I went & watched Skins for the 1st time to see if I like Will Merrick. I really do. It’s mostly to do with his look but he’s maybe got ‘it‘…. He looks exactly like I imagined the Merlin Doctor back in 1989. All he needs now is a camel-haired coat…
