What a beautifully airbrushed face on the cover of ‘Tales of Trenzalore’… 😀
I think it was inevitable that some DW props would materialise in Sherlock! It’d be interesting to go back through the episodes and play spot-the-Drs-prop!
18 January 2014 at 10:17 #24367Costume designer Ken Trew has passed away…

(vaguely ginger)21 January 2014 at 15:35 #24514@wolfweed – I got my daughter the 11th Mr. Potato Head Doctor. On the side, it says his name is “Mash Smith.”
My daughter is a fan, and she is mentally handicapped. She SLEEPS with the Mr. Potato Head. Loves it.
Actually not a bad item (though there aren’t many options for changing him up – they should have added accessories so you could “regenerate” him from one to the other 🙂
21 January 2014 at 21:40 #24525Have a read of this interesting piece by Ed McGuigan of Outpost Skaro on the potential status of the missing episodes…
http://5roundsrapid.wordpress.com/2014/01/21/the-great-missing-episode-swindle-part-two
Interesting stuff!!
22 January 2014 at 12:02 #2454122 January 2014 at 21:44 #24551Matt Smith has won the Best Drama Performance category at the National Television Awards for his role as the Doctor, whilst Doctor Who won Best Drama. Also, Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch won Best Detective.
A thank you message from Matt after winning the Best Drama Performance at the NTAs.
23 January 2014 at 11:54 #2456227 January 2014 at 17:36 #24755Anonymous @The general consensus on Twitter is that this is most likely a) a hoax and/or b) a scam. Please don’t part with ANY money, I’d hate for anyone to be ripped off.
27 January 2014 at 19:52 #24768Anonymous @The link on my previous post has been deleted. In a nut-shell, someone is claiming to have the complete Marco Polo story and intends to put it online – showing the first and last 3 mins but giving you the option to download the episodes at a cost of £4 each.
So far, every time he puts it online, it gets taken down again immediately – not that it matters as it’ll be a hoax anyway.
28 January 2014 at 06:49 #2479928 January 2014 at 09:21 #24800Looks so good. I’m sure others have seen this already, but someone has put these two together. (Got this from io9.)
Along with this:
I’m so excited about the idea of a Pertwee/Cpaldi mash-up.
28 January 2014 at 09:23 #24801Oops: needed a quick crash course in posting a picture. Here goes again.
And:
28 January 2014 at 12:38 #24805Quick round up of the critic’s opinions on the new costume.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-25926876
I still think it makes the Capaldi Doctor look like he’s going to be a ‘kick a Cyberman in the nuts’ sort of Doctor. 😀

I still think it makes the Capaldi Doctor look like he’s going to be a ‘kick a Cyberman in the nuts’ sort of Doctor.
It does rather. Though I think that might be no bad thing. He does look rather like he’s telling you that you can’t come in here with those trainers on.
I still think it needs a tie. Not necessarily a bow tie but some kind of neckwear. All the best Doctors wore a tie of some kind. Davison being the exception that proves the rule.
28 January 2014 at 13:04 #24807I like the new costume. Slightly gothic formal works well for the Doctor. It has a hint of alien authority about it and the red lining is a definite nod to Pertwee. So is P.C. Doctor going to rediscover Venusian Karate too? He certainly looks as though me might. (It is a shame that he doesn’t have a cape though. I do so like billowing capes.)
Cheers
Janette.
28 January 2014 at 13:16 #24808Omg it’s dr who meets Austin Powers lol well that’s my first thought. Though when I saw the the side by side with Pertwee we’ll I though seventies here we come.
28 January 2014 at 15:08 #24810Anonymous @And on the subject of Capaldi’s costume, here’s a fine example of journalism at its crappest. Headline says ‘fans are divided’ over the new costume but there’s not one substantiating quote within the article to support it. And the attached poll comes out with 100% in favour of it.
Gah!!
28 January 2014 at 15:15 #24811It does hint that we might be going the ‘regeneration brings out whatever the Doctor needs, rather than what he wants’ route.
The Smith Doctor’s problem with repressed anger becomes the Capaldi Doctor’s ‘sod the repressed …’ 😀
28 January 2014 at 16:20 #2481328 January 2014 at 19:21 #24817Well there’s definitely homages to previous eras in the cappaldi outfit most notably I think hartnell and pertwee.
28 January 2014 at 19:39 #24818neckties?
All I’m saying is that I called bootlace ties ages ago (maybe on the Guardian though) and then someone goes and finds this.
28 January 2014 at 19:49 #24820I’ve taken my time, given the subject due care and attention and decided…. this is my favourite Doctor outfit in donkey’s years. It feels more old-school than any of the previous AG Doctors, but it’s got nothing gimmicky and no flummery about it. It’s got nods to the past – Pertwee perhaps, maybe a bit Hartnell too – but it’s a pared-down version.
Eccleston’s outfit was too “pared-down” for my tastes – I found it more like a divorced Dad trying not to embarrass his kids on custody weekend than the Doctor. Tennant’s looked good -different and a bit edgy – but was a bit sharp and modern. Smith’s tweed getup I loathed at first (who let him loose in his granddad’s wardrobe 🙂 )but ended up liking a lot, especially after he changed it. His later costume felt too much “costume” to me.
I think they’ve left themselves options for the future with this one; maybe change the cardigan/waistcoat for a different, brighter colour or have a second coat with a different lining. I’m not sure it’d work with a tie/cravat/bowtie or anything, though. It’s quite uncluttered as it stands.
The whole thing screams “no messing about!” I like that.
28 January 2014 at 20:48 #24828I love the new look too though my first reaction was to cringe at those boots. Not because I don’t think they’re awesome but because I know from long experience how long they take to break in. *lol* Still, a Doctor in Doc Martens is long overdue in my opinion. Bring it.
28 January 2014 at 20:52 #24830New blog post folks…
I’ve scoured the net and found a few ‘alternative’ takes on the new costume!
Enjoy..

29 January 2014 at 00:14 #24842Re Mr Potatohead –
they should have added accessories so you could “regenerate” him from one to the other
Just brilliant! 😉
29 January 2014 at 00:17 #24843And agree with comments above re the new outfit.
Especially –
I still think it makes the Capaldi Doctor look like he’s going to be a ‘kick a Cyberman in the nuts’ sort of Doctor.
😀
Let’s face it – anything with a red lining is cool!
And the boots will be fine once they’ve been worn in a bit 😉
29 January 2014 at 00:37 #2484529 January 2014 at 11:37 #24851Amazon are getting a bit ambitious, considering we’re barely three weeks into filming.

Or possibly one of those huge warehouses contains a TARDIS?
29 January 2014 at 12:57 #24854@arkleseizure has already posted the ebay link in On The Sofa but I thought I’d share the image…

29 January 2014 at 14:25 #248561 February 2014 at 11:49 #24921@bluesqueakpip That are the new instant films. Available before filming is finished (spaceballs).
1 February 2014 at 16:51 #249341 February 2014 at 22:23 #24938The Series 8 DVD now has 55 reviews, the Series 8 Blu-Ray is up to a mere 17
I must say I agree that Steven Moffat was eerily frightening as the Valeyard, though I’m surprised the reviewer thought the casting choice dubious. After all, Peter Davison had written and directed him as the main villain before – in his Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.
😉2 February 2014 at 13:14 #24943Whoops – Double-post! I just use it to say:
On leaks, I’ve just read that 2 pages of series 8 episode 1 have been leaked…
2 February 2014 at 13:14 #24944Whoops – Double-post! And now I’ve edited the wrong one! just use it to say:
On leaks, I’ve just read that 2 pages of series 8 episode 1 have been leaked…
(Nothing to do with the series ‘leak’ mentioned in the post below)
Also Dr Who just got a mention on ‘Sunday Brunch’
2 February 2014 at 13:27 #24945@bluesqueakpip (on Amazon reviews)
Nice to see such a high star rating!
It’s amazing how many people found the reviews helpful. Well, laughter is the best medicine…
Joyfully proves that such a premature posting is the ultimate excuse for creative writing.
There’s a ‘leaked’ series 8 episodes synopsis that’s recently appeared on the net which would fit right in with these ‘bonkers theories’…
2 February 2014 at 19:25 #24954I was thoroughly amused by those Amazon reviews. Is anyone but me frequently impressed by how really clever some people are? This kind of thing is the reason that I continue to plough through the piles of stupidity that fill comments and reviews on the internet. I particularly liked this: “set entirely in a quarry in Wales, filmed on location in Singapore”. 😀
2 February 2014 at 21:06 #24956My favourite is by Tim Collins –
‘Although some people had misgivings about a comic actor in a red-lined cape taking over the lead role, season eight of Doctor Who turned out to be a complete triumph. The best stories were Terror of the Autons, The Claws of Axos and The Daemons.’
2 February 2014 at 23:02 #24957Re Amazon reviews – that’s brilliant. Actually it’s a remarkably positive review rate for Dr Who fans. Where have all the snarky Graun readers gone?? 😉 (They couldn’t be making these up could they..?!)
3 February 2014 at 04:03 #24959The very enjoyable hour I have just spent reading through the Amazon reviews reminds me of why I spend less time lurking here than of yore. I have work to do…
Thanks @bluesqueakpip for the links. : -)
Cheers
Janette

10 February 2014 at 11:52 #25168Sad news with the death of director Christopher Barry. Started with The Dead Planet (the very first appearance of the Daleks, 1963) and continued through 4 Doctors to the Baker’s Creature from the Pit in 79. And lots of other notable nonWho stuff as well. A master of the dramatic direction of a sink plunger! In lesser hands Dr who could have turned out very differently. (A good innings at 88 tho)

10 February 2014 at 12:45 #2517010 February 2014 at 13:13 #25171Anonymous @Very sad news about Chris Barry. He was definitely one of the ‘unseen hands’ that helped shape the show to what it is today…
10 February 2014 at 15:42 #25173Yes, sad news.
If you have the DVD of ‘The Daleks’, Christopher Barry is one of the contributors to the voice over commentary.
11 February 2014 at 03:24 #25192I recall seeing that name often on the end credits. Sad news.
Cheers
