Here’s a soundtrack from one of the lasr stories from the Fourth Doctor’s Era “Warriors’ Gate”! How could anyone not love it?

@translatorcircuit I actually have to disagree with you about  Murray Gold has produced some of the best Who music in my own preference. The music in any TV series should set the mood of a scene, it is part of the story. Many shows and films have been ruined by bad music matches. As to your gripe about using the Welsh BBC Orchestra to perform the sound track as they are a cheaper option  is probably erroneous, my understanding is that they are one of the premier orchestras in the UK so are more than probably not a cheap option. Yes the BBC Radiophonics Dept produced some iconic Who music but times change and I would say the production team have done a brilliant job of using some of the best talent available  to produce the show even down to the music used. At the end of the day it will be the fans who will determine whether they like the soundtracks and individual preferences will mean there are disagreements by fans as we all like different styles of music.

On a separate note has anyone heard when the actual Air dates are for the 3 60th specials, I’m getting a bit irritated by not knowing  as like to plan my Who watching , yes we know it will be in November, and will be sometime around  the 23rd (being the actual anniversary).  But is it going to be over 3 weekends straddling the date or even say a Friday/Saturday/Sunday nearest the anniversary.  By this time in the scheduling program for the BBC it should be possible let us fans know.

Hi all I’ve just found out for the Uk viewers and I think the worldwide Disney+ viewers the Specials are to air weekly starting Saturday 25th November haven’t heard the time so dont know if it’s going to be pre or post Strictly but given that the episodes are 1 hr long I suspect it may be pre Strictly.

Thank you for the news @blenkinsopthebrave. (got it right this time..) Finally we have dates and less than a month to wait. (I have a Dr Who podcast to record and edit in that time, but still doing old who as our rule is must be more than twenty years old. I am hoping to be ready to do Rose when the time comes.) We also have to catch up with the end of series 13. I don”t want to watch the new specials until I have seen J.W’s farewell and I have been putting it off.

    Cheers

@blenkinsopthebrave  Thanks for that. I will probably have to wait until I get the DVDs to watch the show because I don’t have Disney and don’t intend to get it. My kids are always asking me what I want for Christmas so I will send them my list. I am still very excited for the anniversary but I am also used to waiting a little bit.

I hope everything is good with you and your Mrs.

@janetteb  I also have to watch the last of 13s story before I watch the new one. I did watch it once but it needs a 2nd viewing just to feel like I am caught up. The on with  David Tenant if only for a little while.

We woke up to a dusting of snow and chilly, grey weather and it made me wonder why humans don’t grow a fluffy, warm  “winter coat” like other animals do in northern climates? The mister and I do our best to gain an extra few pounds and we almost hibernate but a warm coat of fur would be nice. I suppose shedding in the spring would be a nightmare. Hair stuck to everything.

    Stay safe.

Hello @winston. Great to hear from you. It’s been a while. The DVDs come out before Christmas! You should request multiple copies from the children for the Christmas tree!

They will certainly be under the Blenkinsop Christmas tree!

    janetteB @janetteb

@winston We are currently getting our David Tennant “fix” watching Ashoka. He is excellent as the robot and though it is only the voice the robot is so like him.

We had a husky and she grew the lovely thick coat in winter and shed it all in spring, and then oddly again in autumn, usually just before it got cold. the place looked like it was hit by a “fur storm” for a few days but was all over and done with quite quickly. I used to keep the fur in the hope of getting it spun one day. Would have to have a “xaya” scarf.

It is just warming up here but we are in desperate need of rain. Started watering about a month ago now. Right now my roses are in full bloom and the petunias are getting established in the pots and it is lovely and colourful out there and so much brighter without the tree which was too big for our garden though I know we are going to miss the shade when summer hits.

But back to Dr Who. Thank you for the link @blenkinsopthebrave. I am getting very excited about the new episodes. We don’t and won’t get Disney + either however the son and his girlfriend have it to watch Star Wars so it is in the house. I would like to have a family viewing of the special as we all went to the cinema for the 50th.

I have already put some Dr Who merch’ on my Christmas wish list. I need a key ring for the car key. We just got two cut before our old one ran out of battery and for the first time have a key each so I want a proper key ring and of course it has to be Who themed.

    Cheers

Hello all and apologies for not being around and especially for the tardi(s)ness in keeping up with the avalanche of Who news we’ve been getting of late (where’s Wolfweed when you need him?)

Anyway, since it drops tomorrow, I thought I’d make our dwindled but hardcore band aware of this, in case you weren’t already. Can’t say I’m that enthusiastic myself but might be a nice little taster for the specials. (I’d also say that the faces you might expect to be here but aren’t are instructive in themselves.)

Anyway, classic Docs and companions coming to iPlayer tomorrow (tho I guess that means that those in foreign climes might be excluded.)

    #74457
    blenkinsopthebrave @blenkinsopthebrave

@jimthefish We are honoured to have a resident time lord back!

I have been trying to fill in for @wolfweed, but one could never replace him. And I have probably only bothered to mention stuff available in the outposts of empire.

But at least the Celestial Toymaker is about to return (which I think I am more excited about the return of Tennant, to be honest).

    janetteB @janetteb

@jimthefish. Great to hear from you again. Hope that R.L has been treating you kindly. Will you be doing a portrait of the next Doctor? (after Tennants’ third run)

@blenkinsopthebrave Yes. I had forgotten the return of the Celestial Toymaker. It is indeed long overdue as he was a great character with potential. Good choice of actor too i think.

Hello everyone, been a while, was wondering if there was anywhere online where I could listen to all the audio stories? Everyone excited for the return of Tennant? What’s your opinion on Ncuti Gatwa as the new Doctor, don’t know how I feel lol.

    Thanks

Hi @janetteb and @blenkinsopthebrave — glad to see you’re both hanging in there. RL is largely fine, if verging on the weird at times. Hope you’re both doing well too. And yes, I’ll accept that challenge. Will try to come up with a portrait of 15 soon (might even do 14 as well).

And just an addendum to the post about the Whoniverse above, it looks like they’ve included all the animated missing episodes on there too, which I find kinda exciting. Just going off to check out Galaxy Four and Evil of the Daleks right now….

And @impuredalek — I’m actually pretty excited for Ncuti. He strikes me as having the sufficient level of personal exuberance required for the part these days and which I felt Whittaker (and Eccleston for that matter) kind of lacked….

My thoughts about Doctor Who recently are as follows.

I’m happy that at long last there will be some more Doctor Who episodes, so long as the World doesn’t end before then, if Putin decides it should.

I’m very annoyed that the BBC isn’t showing any of the three specials on the actual anniversary! I think they need some severe punishment for this, such as all their channels being taken off air on November 23. I don’t know how to do that, though.

I think that the events in these specials might all turn out to be a dream, which would explain how The Doctor looks like David Tennant again, as well as how Donna remembers him.

As for Ncuti Gatwa, my thoughts about him are similar to Jodie Whittaker, Peter Capaldi, and Matt Smith. By this I mean “Who’s HE?!” I’ve never seen him in anything before.

I think I mentioned before that I think Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor will suffer from severe amnesia to enable the series to reboot by returning to a very basic formula of The Doctor travelling around in space and time, but without any mention of the history, so no Time Lords, no Daleks, no Cybermen, no Master, no UNIT, etc.

I’m in the process of educating a friend about Doctor Who. He has only a 4G Internet connection at home, although he could have WiFi. I’ve recently managed to introduce him to The Third Doctor’s Era, including “The Three Doctors”. The latest thing I showed him was the 50th Anniversary drama “Adventures in Space and Time”. I might show him some Fourth Doctor stories later this month. If he watched the 50th or 60th Anniversary Specials, then I think these would be massive spoilers for him.

    impuredalek @impuredalek

Any beginner recommendations for the audio stories?

    #74471
    Devilishrobby @devilishrobby

@translatorcircuit like you I had kind of hoped that the 3 anniversary specials would have been shown over the nearest weekend to the 23rd but in reality I think that would have been a bit of wishful thinking,(though the major channels ie; BBC and ITV don’t seem to have a problem disrupting scheduling for sports events). Dr Who apart for the last few years of the PreGap era was Traditionally a Saturday night event and when NuWho went to Sunday evenings we all know the initial controversy this caused with die-hard fans. However I was a bit put out with the BBC over thier scheduling of the specials, I personally think what they should have done if they were going to spread them over 3 weeks (yay at least it’s back in a Saturday night slot), it would have been better to have them start on the 11th  then 18th and finishing on the 25th thus straddling the 23rd which is a Thursday. This would have at least put what I am assuming is going to be the underlying Celestial Toymaker arc culminating around the actual Anniversary date and will give us what I am assuming will be the Tenant14doc/Ncutidoc regeneration scene. Yes the 50th did actually occur on the anniversary date, but they got away with that because it was only a one-off special (albeit set up by the end of the previous series) and it actually landed on a Friday night so felt like what it was a weekend slot. Also remember they did do some Who Centered Scheduling on BBC 2 over the subsequent day. As it is it’s beginning to look/feel like a mini-series which will actually be on 3 consecutive weeks then finishing 2 weeks later with the Ncutidoc opening Xmas special on Xmas day.

    winston @winston

@jimthefish  Hi! Nice to hear from you. It is good to see you here.

@impuredalek I am quite excited about the 15th doctor. Ncuti Gatwa looks like he has the energy to do all that running and the charm that the Doctor needs to get by. We are watching Barbie soon so I will look out for him. I am also happy to see David Tenant and Donna Noble back again and the Toymaker! So excited.

I get a lot of audio books from my library which have a good selection of Doctor Who and Torchwood. and they cost nothing.

    Stay safe

    #74491
    ps1l0v3y0u @ps1l0v3y0u

Permanent? The BBC do seem to have clawed everything back from the far reaches of the cable channels over the last 5 years. You would have thought there’s less chance of them letting it go again than Sky taking GoT off Sky Atlantic. But who knows?

I’ve gone for The War Games first up. Loving/Hating The War Chief vs The Security Chief: kind of Clint Eastwood opposite Lee Van Cleef but with all the stoopid dialogue very very intact and delivered very very slow and shoutily!

    janetteB @janetteb

@blenkinsopthebrave. Ah the Star Wars Christmas Special. We are going to cover that for our next cult tv podcast. I suspect it will be a “hate watch”. Those always seem to be the most fun.

Talking of which we just did Black Orchid which was not overly popular. One of our group was horrified at having to watch at least five minutes of cricket. They really do stretch it out. I have yet to edit the podcast and as there is over an hour of recordings might take a bit though I would like to get it up by the 23rd. (We always do Dr Who in November.)

Read this item about RTD talking about his love for Dr Who last night but was too tired to post the link so doing so now. (incidentally there was also an article about Star Wars Christmas Special which was fun.)

    Cheers

so the publicity circus is swinging into gear now. This article is a delight.

And only a few days to go. I am beginning to get a little bit excited. Feels rather like back in 2005 only now I have a lot more memorabilia to spread around. (Our table is still covered with daleks, tardis and mini fig’ doctors from when we did the recording. There are even sticks of celery because we were watching a fifth doctor story.)

@janetteb   And now part 4 is up.

@translatorcircuit   Am looking forward to watching the  Dalek episodes this evening. I gather they have been edited to cut out some of the padding as well being colourised (horrible word).   It will have to be on iPlayer on my computer, though, as my Tivo box is currently on the blink -probably expired of old age – and for some reason I can’t access Freeview either. Fortunately the computer can be linked to a large HD monitor so it won’t be too much of a hardship.

    Time Lord

Well, since we don’t have a dedicated page for the colourised Dalek omnibus (if that’s what we should call it), I’d just like to say that I thought that was great. I loved the colour choices that maintained a lovely 60s vibe (the palette reminded me of the TV21 Daleks strip at points) and the additional music was great too. A wonderful update imo that brought Who’s first real moment of triumph up to date for modern sensibilities (although I suspect it will still enrage some of the more traditional elements of fandom). I’m certainly hoping we see a few more of these. Perhaps Dalek Invasion of Earth and Tomb of the Cybermen please….

    blenkinsopthebrave @blenkinsopthebrave

@jimthefish As a timelord, do you have the capacity to add a forum, or is it only our Emperor @craig who has that capacity?

    #74590
    ScaryB @scaryb

@jimthefish – a forum would be good. I missed that they’d done a colourisation/new edit. Sounds like it’s worth watching (and that from an old dyed in the wool b/w fan!)

    #74591
    TranslatorCircuit @translatorcircuit

@janetteb @mudlark Well, I’ve watched the new COLOURISED version of “The Daleks” and here’s what I thought of it.

In general, the colours used worked quite well. Some of them looked very bright and lurid, though. This might just have been because of the colour schemes the Daleks themselves actually liked. Of course, it’s an alien planet with different tastes. I thought the colours used for the Doctor, his companions and the TARDIS were more subdued. Of course, the sky was red, not blue. This was either due to different chemicals in the atmosphere on Skaro, or the radiation.

I also realised that a lot of the original video had been cut out. I was chatting to a friend about it who I’ve been slowly educating about Doctor Who. I told him that I noticed the following scenes had been deleted. The details about planning routes to get into the Dalek city, details about the plan to ue mirrors to disrupt Dalek communications, as well as details about the Thals’ history, including a star chart. The order of some of the scenes was also changed.

It seems that about 60 minutes was cut from the original 175 minutes, but I haven’t worked out how much of this time was theme music from the beginnings and ends of 5 of the episodes.

I think the new incidental music was a welcome addition. I’ve already posted that I don’t really like the usual BBC Wales Orchestra music which is used in the modern series and I’d really love to hear BBC Radiophonics style music instead. This music was somewhere in between those two styles and sounded 1960s style. I’m not sure which TV series or films have used something similar. Obviously, the music in Star Trek TOS is quite different to this. I’ve seen lots of classic TV series, including Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), The Prisoner, and Department S, but I can’t think of a series with this type of music.

So, overall it was very good, but I wish they hadn’t cut out any of the video at all.

After this, I went out to do some quick shopping, then I looked for and chose anothe classic Doctor Who story to watch for the rest of the Anniversary. This was “The Monster of Peladon”. This is a six part story. Unfortunately, I fell asleep while watching it on BBC iPlayer, then I couldn’t work out during which episode I fell asleep! I’ll continue watching it later today.

As for various equipment and problems, I found out that the BBC iPlayer Android app, which can run on Amazon Fire TV sticks requires a mouse. I was using a mouse emulator app, but I couldn’t scroll the main part of the page down to select any Doctor Who episodes! This meant I couldn’t use it with my Fire TV stick. I have used the mouse emulation for other apps, though. I actually watched “The Daleks” using my Zattoo TV Switzerland subscription.  I think this is a good alternative to the isolationist, Anglophone services such as Freeview. I regularly use this to watch TV series in German, French, and Italian.

Everyone should now realise why my name is Translator Circuit!

@blenkinsopthebrave.Sadly Dr Who and the ABC have parted company. End of an era. We will be able to watch it. we are waiting to gather the family which is far more difficult than herding cats. The cat is here all the time pestering us for attention. The offspring are far more recalcitrant. They are excited to watch the episode together however and keen to make an ‘event” of it. It is not often that the entire household gathers around the tv these days.

TERRIBLE NEWS! As predicted by me some time ago, the number of episodes in future series has been cut down instead of being restored to 13 or more per year. I thought this would happen because it was being financed by Disney Plus. Russell T Davies has announced in SFX magazine that from now on Doctor Who will have only NINE new episodes per year!

I was RIGHT! Doctor Who has been forced to fit into a Disney Plus type length.

Next Week’s edition of the Radio Times, dead tree version, has now landed on my doorstep and contains a feature on the new design of the Tardis interior. As far as I can discover it isn’t available in the on line version, but I am pleased to report that it sounds as if those intriguing circular, irising portals will indeed be used to access other areas/dimensions of the Tardis. For the time being the irising opening of the portals doors will be achieved by special effects, but they hope in time to find a means of working them for real.

The fact that everything is accessed by ramps would be very convenient if Shirley Bingham were ever to need to travel in the Tardis has only just occurred to me, but it is confirmed that she will be returning

P.S. I’d Forgotten that Ruth Madeley was also in /RTD’s Years and Years

@mudlark that sounds interesting. I have yet to witness the return of the “round things” but like the doctor, I do like them and using them as portals sounds like a promising concept. I always feel that the Tardis has great narrative potential rarely utilised. Ruth Madeley was so goon in Years and Years. The character was re’written for her too because she impressed RTD so much in the audition.

@translatorcircuit  I don’t mind less episodes if it the quality of the remaining nine is of the highest standard so they had better all be good episodes…

    Cheers

@janetteb what the cut to nine episodes per year means that there will be fewer stories per year! Russell T Davies said this was because it was so expensive, after being given loads of money by Disney! Of course, this is no excuse.

Star Wars films are very expensive, but the main things about Star Wars is that it’s a series of films which come out occasionally, so there are only a few stories and they spent a fortune on special effects. Of course, years later one or two Star Wars TV series were made. IMHO Star Wars is crap! Star Wars was even used as an excuse by Michael Grade for having an 18 month break in Doctor Who before the Seventh Doctor’s Era started. He had the cheek to compare the amazing story “Warriors of The Deep” to Star Wars, complaining about the lack of special effects, then showing a clip of Doctor Solow trying to fight off The Merkur sea beast. Obviously, Star Wars can’t compare with Doctor Who stories.

Russell T Davies also said in this interview that the reduced number of Doctor Who episodes could be made up by spin offs, but I’m not sure exactly what spin offs will be made. One chance of a spin off from the classic series was missed years ago with “Warriors’ Gate”. Romana said she’d stay in E-Space with The Tharils and do what she and The Doctor had always done. The Doctor asked how how this would be possible without a TARDIS. Romana replied that she’d learn to use the gateway, like the Tharils. I started to write some stories based on this, then tried to get the BBC interested in the concept before I was allowed to send them any of my stories. They just wrote back saying they didn’t plan to make a series of “K9 and Company”, then that was the end of that!
