The Fifth Doctors costume is quintessentially British ??? Yeah, cos we Brits only ever wear cricket jumpers with pyjama trousers.

Willliam Hartnell was The Doctor over half a century ago ??? I’d say exactly half a century ago unless we’re including months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds in our calculations.

The Eleventh Doctor, apparently, burst onto our screens sporting a bow-tie. I must have missed that episode because I could have sworn he arrived wearing Ten’s brown suit.

K9 was The Doctor’s first pet??? Only pet unless you include Mickey 😀

The ordering of The Doctor’s was predictable so it seems a pointless exercise really.

@thekrynoidman  thank you for that! God, we love bashing things don’t we? Personally, I love the phrasing: “Davison’s cricket outfit was typically English and typically Time-Lord” -what does that mean? That T-Ls must play cricket??

Then, three doctors were considered ‘chatty’. Hartnell was in the middle?? Chris before Hartnell? I loved their comment that “Eccelston exceeded his leather-clad shoulders.” Okaaay, I get what they meant, but I would think it could just as easily mean that his jacket was too small for him -and many fans thought this, I expect.

I liked the excerpt they used for Smith as it had both Mark A Sheppard and Alex Kingston! Also Chris’ exclamation about the plastic in the universe: “think of all the shop dummies, cables, wires…” and Rose quickly interrupts with “breast implants”. By Ood, I never remembered that!!  Lists are lists, not everyone loves ’em!

@fatmaninabox oops, I was concentrating on the phrasing, you were commenting on the stuff that actually mattered…like the FACTS!  Of course, Smith wears Ten’s suit as he’s come up ‘through’ the pool. But I liked the gentle dropping neck tie; yeah, I know everyone puts that one in…but I always get something in my eye around then! Still, I’m a bit peeved they didn’t pop in McGann -actually did they? Cripes, I can’t remember something from 5 mins ago 🙁

@purofilion – No, Paul McGann didn’t get a mention which is surprising considering the outpouring of love after Night Of the Doctor aired and the subsequent requests for an Eighth Doctor series.

But like you say, lists are lists.

Having a top ten seems a little ill mannered to me given that there have only been twelve doctors to date and after Night of the Doctor Paul McGann definitely deserves a mention. (Before Colin Baker at least.)  I agree with @TheKryniodMan. This list certainly deserves “a good kicking”.

Ha – I was doing a websearch for something else, and I came across this which raised a smile. One of those “alternative” lists of the Doctors history, but imagining American actors of the periods in the role. Quite funny, with some odd choices, but I think it was @whisht who suggested on the Next Doctor thread that Gene Wilder would have been a good choice.

It seems this guy thinks the same, casting him as the alternative Fourth Doctor.

It would have been a very different beast that’s for sure. I honestly don’t think it would have lasted that long.

The choices are interesting. Burgess Meredith I wouldn’t have thought of in the role at all, but remembering his turn as The Penguin in the Batman series, I thought I could see why the idea appealed.

The ultimate laugh was for six though. I had a vision of an American equivalent of JNT going up to Christopher Walken and saying “this is what you’ll be wearing in the job”. I think there would have been fatalities.

The module result is also good because I hadn’t done much creative writing for the year or so before this course, it was nice to have the focus.

@phaseshift: well Morrison’s had the offer of twenty cans of Stella for £16, that should do us for the weekend we said.  Well, we were half right…

Had a real laugh reading it.

I can actually see Meredith grumbling and cackling his way through, but also turning on the charm when needed!

And Walkern is also a brilliant choice (if a bit A list for TV in the 80’s!).

The few missteps in casting are the ones that miss what has been identified on these threads before (was it @bluesqueakpip talking about Tennant that I’m remembering?) in that they’re the ones without charm. MacLachlan has none (though I love him as an actor), as with Cage all too often.

And Price – surely the Master?!?? (or Christopher Lee if we keep to the Hammer Price/Lee/Cushing trio?)

As a side note, although I love Fiona Apple far too deeply, she should never be allowed to cover songs again – her version of this and Across the Universe are awful. Yet her own stuff is so wonderful. hey ho]

I agree that some of the choices seem a bit optimistic in casting. 🙂

I’ll also agree that MacLachlan and Cage seemed to stand out as “wrong” somehow. It’s odd the ones that I immediately thought – yes I could see that, as I thought about them in other work. Wilder was a great suggestion that I always remembered from you on the next Doctor thread, but when I saw Jeff Goldblum as the Eighth Doctor, I could really see that somehow.

actually @phaseshift that list you linked to makes me think that there are ~4 qualities The Doctor needs (from an actor):
Innocence, Danger, Intelligence, Charm.

Makes me think there’d be a fun Top Trumps style idea with this (each actor having more or less of each).

Hi, I’m from South Korea, and I have a big question right now.

How are the world tour planned in your area?

This may sound weird and stuff, but currently in Korea, a pretty small area(Barely fits 200 people) is going to be used for fan meeting, and the season 8 episode 1 will be shown in one theater(Also barely fits 200 people). This is currently resulting on all of the Whovians of South Korea raging. So we just wanted to know how things are in different countries.

Loved that 1986 video. Especially the comment from one of the fans about what
attracts the American fans: “It’s good versus evil without getting terribly violent, like it is over here.” Exactly. And something AG Who is sometimes in danger of forgetting.

Also loved the final comment by the guy in charge of the roadshow about the fans: “They are probably the most gentle souls I have ever met in any work I’ve done in my life.” Of course, that was in the days before the Internet, which allows the less gentle souls who frequent Guardian talk-backs to spoil the experience (in every sense of the word “spoil”).

Yep, as far as I am concerned, the jury is still out on whether the Internet has improved our quality of life.

Greetings from Canada. Well, the world tour misses Canada entirely. As for the first episode of Series 8, in my town the only option is an expensive cable subscription to be able to watch it on one of the cable channels. It sounds like neither of our countries are doing their best by Doctor Who.

Wow, just been away for a week, traveling through the spotty internet of the Canadian Arctic, and of course everything happens while I’m gone. Spoilers, trailers, two weeks worth of retrospectives. I barely know where to begin. I will have to schedule a lot of catchup viewing between catchup work and catchup weeding (the weeds have grown up quite alarmingly in nine days!).

I’m also rather stunned to look at the calendar and realize it’s only six summery weeks until the arrival of the new Doctor. Hurray!

I’m sure it must be frustrating, because I’ve tried to get tickets to these kind of events in the past in the UK. I’ve never been successful because they are usually massively over subscribed, and yes, they do tend to be smaller venues. They are primarily designed for the press, and having some fans enjoy an episode and get involved in the Q&As just adds a lot of atmosphere.

Just for context though, when Matt Smith started in the role, his “world-tour” was largely confined to the UK (including closed showings at his own school) with one jaunt to New York (which BBC America paid, because they’d just taken on showing DW in the states). That was in a very small venue, and its relative success has seen it become a larger and more permanent feature.

This time it’s much, much bigger, and the same thing may happen. As a long time fan I never thought I’d see the day when a launch would be on this scale, so I’m glad at least some lucky fans will get the chance to meet them.

Further to comments above about the troll-like qualities of some online Whovians – the fanclubs of late 80s/90s also had their share of curmudgeonly types I believe.

I sympathise with the Canadians over missing out on the world tour for though it is touching down in Oz there are a few thousand kilometres between us and “it”. (very deep sigh)

Yes, of course, winter in the other half of the world. It’s pretty hot here at the moment, the word “hot” being used tentatively, knowing what you in Australia go through in your summer! But the low-thirties temperatures we are getting right now are unusual for Vancouver. On our return from vacation the other day I felt as though we had mistakenly landed in another country!  🙂

And I meant to say that I thought of everyone here last week, when I encountered the words “Bad Wolf” written on the door of a washroom stall in Inuvik! Well, they do have lots of satellite dishes up there, as we were reminded by our local guide, “for our HD TV and our high-speed internet”.

Hello there everyone.  Well, I guess I’ll introduce myself.  I’m 19 years old.  I’m an American.  I have long brown hair, brown eyes, I’m pretty tall, kinda on the chubby side, and I always wear a pink rose clip in my hair.  I’m possibly bi, but I kinda consider it irrelevant, since I currently have the best boyfriend ever!  I can act childish, but I’m also kind and will less likely start a flame war, but either way I usually say what’s on my mind if something bothers me.  I also love anime, but I tend to get sensitive at the mention of weeaboo, and for that reason, I’m scared to mention another Japanese word for fear of getting picked on or ridiculed (except when I’m with my friends or fellow anime fans).  I’m also a Homestuck fan, and my favorite anime is Sailor Moon (I even share my birthday with Usagi!)

Okay onto the Doctor Who stuff.  I got into the fandom about a month ago.  A friend shown me an episode with 10, and well I guess you could say it was fandom love at first sight.  I’m trying to watch the old episodes all the way through, but because I have an interest in older series, I’ve also been sneaking in classic episodes, especially from the Tom Baker era.  I’m actually unsure who my first Doctor is.  You see, I may have seen a rerun of Tom Baker Doctor Who on my local PBS station.  I don’t remember for sure though, since I was possibly pretty young, but I think I was old enough to read.  It’s just I looked up all the Doctor Who intros, and the 4th Doctor one was the most familiar to me, and I also read that PBS was what usually reran the episodes, (and older relatives were able to confirm that for me).  More likely, I might have seen the intro when I was putting in or taking out a video (ha!  Video!  It’s been awhile!) and the show was just happened to be playing.  But since I was a kid, I only liked to watch the cartoons and stuff on PBS, and there might have been a possibility that the intro music sounded weird and made me uneasy.   I’m not quite sure if that’s true, but seeing the Tom Baker intro, it just feels familiar to me, like I’ve seen that before.  Oh well, I guess the important thing is that I’ve seen it now and I love it!  And for that reason, I often say that 4 is the first I saw of the classic series, and 10 is my first of the modern, and they’re also my favorite.  Although to tell you the truth, I love all the Doctors, (yes even you Six), and I can’t wait to see Capaldi.

 

I love to draw, and I’m also good at sewing.  I sometimes sew cosplay items for myself, but I also sew dolls, usually in anime style.  I’ve recently sewn one of 10 and the TARDIS, and I’m working on Rose.  I love all sorts of music, and if I had a better recorder on the computer, I’d record myself singing English covers of J-pop songs, and I’m thinking of doing an a Capella version of the Doctor Who theme.  One of my favorite (albeit fictional) band is Your Favorite Martian.  If you don’t know what it is, it’s a cartoon band on YouTube, with Ray William Johnson as the main singer Puff Puff, and their songs are so funny!  Too bad it canceled!  🙁  That’s what influenced my username.  I was going to use YourFavoriteWhovian, but I liked Time Lady better.  XD

If you made it this far in my intro, you sir (or ma’am) deserve a bag of jelly babies.  Thank you guys, and I hope to make new friends here.  ^u^
