I too like the idea of a “mini ‘sode” featuring the earlier doctors. I also think it quite probable that they have “voice” lines in the special. I am certain that Peter Davidson wouldn’t be given a personal copy of the script if he didn’t have some form of involvement in it. (Even if he is well and truely Doctor family now.) I noted in an article elsewhere that Frazer Heines does Troughton impersonations so maybe he could do the second doctor and with David Bradley being established as the first regeneration he could provide the voice.

Wolfweed that is one of the best spoilers yet– you can hear actual DIALOGUE! Dialogue of no consequence probably but still. Quite exciting to think we’re hearing actual lines from the 50th. Did you take that video yourself? I hope it’s alright, I’ve cross-posted it to some other Dr. Who spoilers pages, but I didn’t know who to credit.

Can anyone hear the dialogue better than my old ears? Here’s my best take:

Doctor: What do we make of [inaudible] eh? Two O’clock in the afternoon; must be very short days here

Clara: Is it Christmas here too?

Doctor: No, it’s the height of the summer

Clara: Inaudible

Doctor: [Inaudible]…is slowing and the message is coming from THAT tower. Ah! Hello! Hello there…

Not much to go on of course :-). But extremely exciting. I like, for example the fact that it’s pretty clear the “Christmas” nature of the special will be acknowledged and perhaps even play a large role.

Side note, I was extremely saddened to see that that “expanded poster” was fan work and not another brilliant spoiler. How clever would that have been for the BBC to release the poster, then release an enlarged version, and keep adding stuff in the coming weeks as a way to release more details! I dunno if you were trying to get me or just sharing some cool art but either way, damn you for getting my hopes up 🙂

Ah I was thinking to myself “LOOK HOW MUCH EXTRA ROOM THERE IS FOR MORE THINGS/PEOPLE TO BE REVEALED!” Haha what a shame.

There’s been talk over on the Doctor Who News thread about the 50th anniversary trailer.  I found this written description, which admittedly doesn’t seem spoilerish at all – we know the actors in it, we know from the poster that Daleks are in it, so even if you are nervous of spoilers I don’t think reading this precis will be painful in any way.  🙂

@wolfweed – hiya Wolfster.  I’m wondering if you can do me a favour until @craig has a chance to think about a permanent fix.

See, even though we now have ‘spoiler spoiler spoiler’ in the Activity stream, when a user’s mouse moves over the link to a post here in Spoilers from the ‘Recent Forum Posts’ in the sidebar on the right, the first few words still display.  In the case of your post above (juicily delicious gossip btw!  We can only hope to see more of Alex), enough shows of your link to see ‘Alex Kingston hints’.

A user can avoid moving their mouse in that manner, but I’m worried about inadvertant slips where someone who really, really doesn’t want any kind of spoiler at all, learns something they don’t want to know.

@blenkinsopthebrave – I’m addressing this message to you as well, as it’s only you, Wolfie, and me who have posted here in the last couple of weeks.  I’ll catch anyone else who posts and ask them to do the same, which is, please start posts in Spoilers with some kind of junk text of your choosing, but it needs to be up to 50 characters on the same line.

For example:

Right, Bonkers theory time:

We know several things about the special. Zygons, Daleks, Tennant, Hurt, Smith. Kate Stewart, Queen Elizabeth 1st, a Hashtag on twitter of #Savetheday, Totters Lane and Coal Hill School (Ft in Unearthly CHild, Remembrance of Daleks, Attack of Cyberman), Rose and Clara.

 

John Hurt is an aged Paul Mcgann Doctor, twisted by his actions in the Time War, he has decided that Time itself must be destoyed. He does not want to live and erasing himself from time at a focal point it will rebound onto time even more. and kill Time. It may even be this bitter war that the alliance of races were ultimately trying to stop.

At some point between Time Locking and Eccleston, he starts travelling to various ‘focal points’ in time. When we first meet Hartnell,  Shakesperian times, current times – points where the Cracks in time appear. This allows for older doctors to appear in flashback like in TNoTD and Daleks and Zygons. We see their stories but with Hurt doctor intefering.

He then tries (somehow) to reopen the cracks, to destroy time.

In a timey-wimey loop, he is stopped by by Tennant and Smith (with help from Rose and Clara) and locked within his own timestream.,  but not before he escapes to Trenzalore, crashes his Tardis and blows some stuff up.

Clara acts a lock on the Timestream due to travelling within the timestream and sealing him creates a tear (the glowy thing in the tomb). This resets the timelines and only 10/11 are left knowling about it as it concerns their timestream.

BUT because nobody remembers except the doctor, the tomb is opened, Clara jumps in the timestream therefore releasing HurtDoctor at his original point in the timestream. They travel back to stop him…timeloop ensues!

I like your theory – still working through it, but, but… I DIDN’T KNOW that QE1 was involved and I didn’t know about the locations being confirmed 🙁 Spoilery?

I tend to think that “the long and bitter war” warrior-Dr is a construct of the GI, after he entered the Dr’s timestream.  Maybe it’s the HurtDr’s actions which caused the cracks and all Smith’s stories have been about repairing the damage he did.

Something that just occurred to me in the technical side – if they really have found old episodes, then that opens up what clips they have available for Hartnell and Troughton. We could see an original Yeti yet!

OK! Magazine may have printed a huge 50th anniversary spoiler (or a shocking mistake) in their latest issue.

The text, which precedes an interview with David Tennant and Catherine Tate, says:

The countdown is on for Doctor Who fans as the iconic show prepares to celebrate its 50th birthday with a bang. A 75-minute anniversary episode has secretly been filmed to mark the occasion, which will see favourites including David Tennant, Catherine Tate and Billie Piper returning to our screens alongside the most recent Doctor, Matt Smith.

After producers teased the nation with incredibly brief snippet trailers of the one-off episode, entitled The Day Of The Doctor, OK! caught up with David and Catherine to see if we could get them to spill the beans on what the scriptwriters have in store for us. ‘Ask me anything, I don’t work for the BBC any more so don’t care,’ David quipped before an executive decided to step in!

Asked whether viewers might also see the recovered episodes, without having to pay Apple £1.89 per episode or £9.99 to download the complete stories, BBC Worldwide said licence-fee payers had already enjoyed a chance to watch the programmes in the late 60s.

It is the type of commercial deal, with the proceeds being ploughed back into licence fee funds, which the BBC will increasingly pursue under its Director General, Tony Hall.

Yeah, I really enjoyed a chance to watch when I hadn’t been born. And yet I pay, and my parents pay, and my parent’s parents  paid (sadly no longer here) for the BBC’s very existence.

Once again it’s all about the money. Grrrrr.

@craig – sorry but you don’t have a leg to stand on. The License fee covers broadcast TV inside the UK (the BBC web site caries and, soon, iPlayer, will carry advertising outside the UK).

The license fee payer at the time paid for the content at the time.

Of course, the fee has not kept pace with inflation – not even close – and that is why there is so much less original content, despite many more platforms.

You do want them to raise money that can be put into new programming, don’t you?

@pedant I’m really trying not to have ARSE.

However, from what I can tell, Apple takes about 40-50% per download. If that’s how they plan to distribute the episodes then they should think again. Apple, who didn’t do anything here, will make a fortune. I could set the BBC up with a website, with payment via Paypal for example, and they’d only have to pay 2-3%.

Re paying for content at the time, I totally agree. But how often do you hear people complaining that there are too many repeats? The fee may be less in real terms but the opportunites to profit from each programme are much greater.

As far as I know Doctor Who and Top Gear earn the BBC over £100 million each, and yet (I don’t care about Top Gear) Doctor Who has it’s budget trimmed every year. If it was me I’d say “Have as many millions as you want, we’ll still be in clover” But that’s not the attitude. The attitude is much more that the licence fee is there “to raise money that can be put into new programming”.

That’s accountants talking. Not dreamers.

Apple makes a huge amount of revenue, but very little profit, from iTunes : its software services are only just short of being loss leaders – it is, overwhelmingly, a hardware company. But it also happens to have reinvented how we consume content

Somebody would have to distribute it,so why not the largest electronic content platform on the planet? As a license payer I rather demand that the BBC makes its content available to the widest possible audience – and that is what Apple gives. Do you propose that Apple should take a loss for the benefit of BBC viewers? The BBC simply does not have the delivery platform. ALL distribution channels contain parties the “do do anything for me”.

And the BBC has other, wide ranging, charter responsibilities (if you want to see “underfunded” spend a couple of hours watching the BBC News channel).

@craig I have to say I agree with you on this.

Licence-fee payers also had the chance to watch ‘Dad’s Army’, ‘Top Of The Pops’ and ‘The Likely Lads’ yet the BBC are quite happy to repeat those programs (except, obviously, episodes of TOTP hosted by ‘you know who’).

AG Who episodes are available on DVD so Tony Hall will, presumably, be stopping the repeats on BBC3. If we missed them first time round, tough…

On their website, the BBC have told us they’re going to ‘take over TV and radio to mark the Doctor’s 50th anniversary’. Really? What with? Apart form the ever watchable Brian Cox’s show and AAISAT, the programs they have on offer aren’t what I’d call ‘earth-shattering’. A few ‘talking heads’ giving us their memories of Doctor Who?  Big ‘whoopee f***in’ doo’. As we’ve all been watching the same program, chances are we’ll have they same memories, so nothing new there.

What is ‘new’ however, are these found ‘lost’ episodes. Any other time and I wouldn’t have a problem with them being available on-line and/or DVD only but it is, in case the Beeb had forgotten, a bloody important year for DW. Now, I’m prone to being a bit naïve from time to time but I honestly thought (hoped) that these episodes were going to be a surprise addition to the Anniversary celebrations.

I’m currently out of work so I can’t afford a phone line. My internet access is done using a broadband dongle. As I can only afford to top up with £10 per month, which gives me 1gb data allowance, I wouldn’t be able to download them even if they were free and it’s unlikely (unless I’m working by then) that I’ll be able to afford the DVDs either. With the licence-fee however, I don’t have a choice but to pay it so I don’t think it’s to much to expect something in return.

I’m starting to get ARSEy so I’d better stop. Rant over (takes deep breath, exhales slowly and relaxes). I need a cuppa. Do they serve tea (and biccies) in the Rose and Crown?

The quality of Web of Fear in particular looks AMAZING! I presume the BBC and/or Philip Morris or whoever had to hand over cash for these films. And all the antsy and ARSEy online activity only serves to hammer home the potential market value of old DW. You’re not negotiating from a position of strength here.  Plus you’ve got all the nonWho general public who will go – “You paid WHAT (of OUR licence fee) for 9 episodes of a 46 year old black & white kids science fiction show???!!” (But they’re probably not as bad as the fans with large ARSE)

We nearly didn’t get the Daleks back because the estate of Terry Nation wasn’t inclined to play ball at first…

True, but the BBC is a public service broadcaster. Money should not be the only criteria for them. Especially in an anniversary year, and especially considering the amount of extra income that Who has brought them over the years. And I believe that it’s possible to overstate the amount of money that separate rights for ‘monster’ creations paid. I also believe that it was a practice that was phased out by the 1970s anyway, interestingly largely because of the nuisance that Lincoln and Haisman made of themselves with the marketing of the likes of the Yeti and the Quarks.

But nobody “invented” the Home Guard or chippy Geordies….

No, but residuals still get paid for the transmission of episodes of Dad’s Army or Likely Lads. They’re not somehow free to transmit or even, I suspect, that much cheaper than your average episode of classic Who. They do garner much higher ratings though, so it’s easier to make a case for showing them.

I could be wrong here but I think that was because they were hoping to hold the Beeb to ransom over the use of the Daleks. I think a lot of hard ball was being played. There was also I think some concern that the Beeb were going to redesign the Daleks too far away from the look to which the Nation estate held the rights and thus potentially losing them of their very lucrative income stream.

Yes – rights are complex (and can get horrifically expensive – that’s why we will never see The Wonders Years on DVD). Even the broad brush strokes we are using would need a lawyer to sort out.

Yet people want the BBC to fork over for them, but not seek to cover the cost. That, to me, is the very definition of ARSE.

Money should not be the only criteria for them.

But if they can’t afford it, no other criteria even come into play.

@pedant Yes, I did have a touch of ARSE last night, having re-read my posts. I think I was just a bit shocked.

I can afford the episodes and have very fast broadband, so it’s not about the money for me or the delivery method. But as @fatmaninabox points out, these are problems for some people.

It IS a shame that they couldn’t be broadcast in the UK and the cost of recovering and restoring them recouped via DVD sales and international sales. I’m sure just about everyone on here will be getting Enemy of the World in their Christmas stocking. I don’t think the BBC’d just be breaking even if they had done that.

And the PR was handled badly. I don’t know who Tony Hall gets advice from but if they’d said “These cost a lot to recover so unfortunately we can’t just broadcast them as there is a substantial sum to recoup, however they will eventually turn up on TV” I’d have been a lot more forgiving than I am after being told that we all had our chance to see them in the Sixties. That was a slap in the face.
