Craig started the topic The Keys of Marinus part 5
This week it’s “Sentence of Death” and the Doctor is back. Instead of Indiana Jones, this episode is more courtroom drama. The fourth and final key is stolen before Ian can get to it, but he is knocked out and then accused of stealing it. More importantly, he is also accused of murder. On this planet you are guilty until proven innocent (which is…[Read more]

@whisht (and @thane15) it’s not just you…
Sure, everyone's talking about the F, but look how appallingly spaced the 'THAT' is too. #CrimesAgainstFormatting#FontOCD pic.twitter.com/dv0DotpcGr— Alan TurkINgton (@thisisalanturk) October 4, 2017

Hi all, I thought it was about time I upgraded the site’s software and as it’s reasonably quiet at the moment I did it this morning. There were some minor hiccups and I panicked a little, but I think it’s all working fine now.
If something doesn’t work or looks a bit weird or out of whack, please let me know as soon as possible, either here or by…[Read more]

It’s National Poetry Day today in the UK, and they’ve just released a book of Doctor Who poems. To celebrate, the official fan show had writer James Goss and illustrator Russell T Davies (yes, he can draw too) on to have a bit of fun. Thought you’d like this.

I forgot to say, having watched it again, I was wondering if this was “Doctor Who” or “The Barbara Wright Show”. 😉

This week it’s “The Velvet Web”. Barbara is missing, possibly injured or worse. The TARDIS team are looking for one of the four missing keys of Marinus but they must find Barbara first. They quickly discover she’s fine – in fact, she’s better than fine. Barbara’s living in luxury! But as the title suggests, all may not be what it…[Read more]

Just as a weird addendum to my post above. I only found out recently why capital letters are “uppercase” and others are “lowercase”. It’s ridiculously simple and made me laugh, as I’ve been using the terms all my life without even thinking about it.
Supposedly, printers of old had cases (drawers) of letters and they kept the capitals in the top…[Read more]

@thane15 Kerning is the term printers gave to the spaces between letters. It’s a bit of an art, based on what letters are placed next to each other. I think the main problem in “SEA OF DEATH” is the slope of the A next to the T in DEATH. Both letters take up the same space. A graphic designer, these days, would reduce the space taken up by the T…[Read more]

@Wolfweed as well as the great fluff, which I laughed out loud at, there is also the sexism in the script (or in the Doctor), which made me wince.
There’s at least twice when the Doctor walks up to Barbara and Ian, who are standing together, and says something like “What do you think of this Chesterton?” Barbara had already been established as a…[Read more]

To fill the gap between now and Christmas @Bluesqueakpip helpfully suggested we revisit some episodes featuring the first Doctor. As we already know, he’ll be making an appearance at Christmas (played by David Bradley).
As we’ve done previously, we’re going to take one story and watch it at the pace it was intended (one episode per week) and…[Read more]

This ‘On The Sofa’ is now closed as it has exceeded the 1000 post limit. But there is a new, very comfortable sofa, for all sorts of Doctor Who chat here.

@wolfweed Many thanks for the link, saves me some work – will get it up later today – probably around the traditional 6pm slot. Now I just have to decide what to do with the Home page.

As happens occasionally our sofa gets a bit too full and we have to move to a new sofa. This is a place to congregate, somewhere to “hang out”. It’s a topic for general chat about anything you want, and a place for new members to pop in and say “hello” without worrying about making any real contribution (we know that your first post can s…[Read more]

Hi @blenkinsopthebrave @bluesqueakpip yes, I’ll hopefully have time to set something up on Saturday. Keys of Marinus all right with everyone, if possible? I’ll check what is easily available and easy to purchase.

Russell T Davies received a lifetime achievement award at the Edinburgh Television Festival yesterday – which he fully deserves. He wasn’t too complementary about the government, or most of the industry!
