    @lisa

    Given that the classic path of an addiction (in Clara’s case, to lying) is that you can’t break free until you’ve reached the rock bottom moment where you know it’s change or die, I’d say it’s unlikely that Clara’s arc is continuing downwards. Her ‘rock bottom’ was the dream-within-a-dream, when she chose to stay with Danny knowing that it…[Read more]

    @XADA what @lisa just said. Also seeing Anna Chancellor on the cast reminded me of that heart wrenching scene in the final episode of  The Hour which is well worth including if we do a P.C. retrospective.

    Green wooden sheep? Well at least it is memorable. (luckily my youngest doesn’t have any sheep in his wooden animal collection or I would be…[Read more]

    Happy New Year to all when  it comes (or if indeed it has already gone!).

    A few hours to go for me yet – will be happily watching the Edinburgh fireworks on the tele with my Mum, Dad and Brother while sitting by a warm stove with an extremely large glass of Whisky.

    @lisa  LOL nice link, not sure I’ll be able to come with some of those costumes b…[Read more]

    @lisa   Daniel Pink’s book “A Whole New Mind” was required reading in my son’s Grade 8 Social Studies class. (It was a class that came straight to mind when I saw Clara’s “gifted and talented” class in the fall!) The book discusses at length the kind of skills that will lead to success in the “new economy” and advocates for the teaching of creativ…[Read more]

    @Bluesqueakpip Thank you for that 🙂

    @Lisa There would indeed appear to be one dream crab still out there. That we know of!  Who’s to say there aren’t more. Or that we (and this board) aren’t all asleep and deeply dreaming? 😈 (in which case I thank you all for being excellent telepathic/dream companions)

    @lisa She didn’t necessarily let him to the dream crabs but to The Celestial Toymaker. At this point the dream crabs could even not be a real thing but all a setup of The Toymaker to mess with The Doctor’s mind.

    its just going to be all grief and torment for me :( lol !

    Everything has a price. This is the price of bonkers theorising. 😉

  • Bluesqueakpip replied to the topic Last Christmas

    @lisa

    it was a great beginning except for the part where the creature invasion scene was cut out.

    The invasion may have consisted of six creatures. I think at one point, the Doctor theorises that the dream crab got him first, then traced Clara through him. That suggests that – somehow – they don’t just eat people’s brains, they travel along their…[Read more]

    In all of the very best monster stories the monster is not the story, but a device through which to tell a story.

    Exactly. In the story, I note that:

    • Clara has just lost Danny, and is so grief-stricken that staying in a fantasy world and dying seems a practical option.
    • The Doctor has just been betrayed by Clara AND his…

    Dream Crabs:

    I don’t think there has to be any real world explanation. I think this was simply a self-contained entertainment. It was a dream. It was all a dream.

    @lisa

    I’m still even after this re-watching having no new ideas about how they got snatched by the dream crabs

    The correct answer in such situations is “They just did.” The technical answer is that a cocktail of of phlebotnum and unobtanium were blended in a McGuffin machine in order to create a device with which to tell a story.

    In all of the ve…[Read more]

    Merry Christmas all, from the Blenkinsop household–which is currently littered with random tangerines (my first tangerine Christmas!) and the council pick-up has just taken away the Blenkinsop empties (it was a big truck).

    First impressions of “Last Christmas” were very positive indeed. Moffatt can pull off, in a one-hour show, a wonderful play…[Read more]

    I share your thoughts entirely (which has lead me to join the forum…. Hi!)

    Oh @lisa, say it ain’t so about the dreamy dreaming dreamers. I can see one good ‘And it was all a dream’ episode, but yeah the dream patches are too big a deal, unless there is a simple explanation like the sedative in them is derived from dream crabs, although it is strongly implied they are the stuff of legend, even for the Doctor. Anyway, I…[Read more]

    @avpr212, @lisa, i think Lisa has a point about Ian, but that for me falls under the category of give it time, hopefully.

    I think Christmas will establish that at least one alien has a Santa! And as for encouraging the next generation, there will be a wee delivery from the Doctor, via the BBC shop. I must admit, I’m absolutely loving it. I know…[Read more]
