@nerys @winston  Now I’ve got to go look again . . . gosh, what a dreadful chore . . . Whatever happens next, we’ll always have S8 and S9, by gum, and to me that’s a joy and a wonder, come what may.  It feels like a victory for intelligence and perspicacity, that these things exist, warts and all, and the nitpickers and grinders can go chew on t…[Read more]

@nerys  I loved Deep Breath for it’s comedy as you say layered between the drama. It was a great way to meet CapDoc for the first time. Having new Doctor anxiety after every regen, I am always on edge when I meet a new Doctor but after 10  or so minutes into the episode I thought “I like this new Doctor!” and I have enjoyed him since then. Th…[Read more]

It is possible that Apple has stumbled upon the answer in app-based boxes. But licensing still needs sorting out. HBO has an app in the US but nowhere else, because they keep selling individual shows to local partners. The content makers need to learn for Netlfix and Amazon and cut out the middlemen.

@nerys     Yes, I imagine that the contract runs out at some future date and then we will lose it as well. I hope it will continue to be available on iTunes or I will really be in trouble. I find the current attempts by certain parties to hang on to the 20th century pretty frustrating. Personally, I have embraced streaming and digital dow…[Read more]

@nerys — RE. Netflix. I think I posted a week back an article on the RT about how Who’s presence on Netflix UK is up for renewal in April, with the speculation being that it’ll be pulled from there too. It’s all down to contracts and renewal dates but the chances are that it’ll be pulled from Canada too at the earliest opportunity. I think the…[Read more]

If you can afford it, why not buy them? That way you get all the specials too.

I don’t like any plastic or rubber aliens, whether it’s Doctot Who, Star Trek or Alien (I’m a sci-fi lover and I’ve never seen that movie, not because it was my decision not to watch it, but I’ve never been curious) unless they’re treat with humour. And that applies to both Slitheen and Clom (and the alien from the…[Read more]

Yet you then discuss a brain, comparing it to a computer when a brain is nothing like  a computer…

NOTHING like a computer?   Really?  Are you sure?

Besides comparing a brain to a computer is no different than saying that your voice is like chalk on a blackboard, for example.

Metaphor – a figure of speech in which a word or phra…

  • jphamlore replied to the topic The Husbands Of River Song

@nerys: I think the Doctor through much of the episode was hoping River Song would recognize him but did not want to do something completely obvious that would announce his presence such as pulling out the sonic screwdriver.  Thus the use as you have noted of the glasses at one point.

I love the idea of the glasses and hope for even more radical…[Read more]

  • ichabod replied to the topic The Faces of the Doctor

@nerys  Sure — I’m thinking of the noodling part, just “fooling around”, rather than doing exercises, lessons, or playing a particular piece.  But that can also be a form of rest, too.  As long as it’s not competitive with anything else, including one’s own last or best effort.  Free-wheeling body, free-wheeling mind, slaves of nothing, for a whi…[Read more]

@janetteb  @nerys  I like The Doctor playing the guitar

Me, too — really like it.  It’s a form of meditation for him, I think — better than sitting on his TARDIS in a sort of yoga posture, more like this Doctor than a violin.  CapDoc may be an aristocrat by birth, and he has some of the attitudes and habits of command of an aristocrat, but he’…[Read more]

  • @nerys I like The Doctor playing the guitar as well. It reminds me of Sherlock playing the violin in order to think. Other Doctors have played instruments and it’s great to see a New Who Doctor find his own instrument to play so he can process all his ideas.

  • janetteB replied to the topic The Faces of the Doctor

Guitar playing is a much an eccentricity as flute playing. I see no reason at all why it is acceptable for the Doctor to play a recorder or dangle a yo yo but not strum an electric guitar. I also don’t think that playing the guitar is seen by anyone as “cool” any more. Wait, checking with random teenager, and yep, to quote, “if anything electric…[Read more]

@mudlark  This: . . .  all the oblique and coded references in their conversation and their body language left me with a strong feeling, if not certainty, that the Doctor and Clara had reached a mutual, if unspoken understanding. When they parted he knew perfectly well who she was, even though she was no longer ‘in his mind’ and his memori…[Read more]
