@janetteb@winston@blenkinsopthebrave@dentarthurdent@nerys@mudlark@missy,  thank you all. And yes, I live with my partner, who actually found her (I didn’t see her) and he’s been fantastic, doing most of the sorting through of things in her rooms upstairs (she was something of a hoarder) while I try to plug on with finishing my disser…[Read more]

@nerys   Almost 4000 miles – that is a long trip.   I can’t really match that – in NZ one tends to run out of land.   The furthest I can go is about 1000 miles (and that needs a ferry crossing), then I have to turn round and come back.

But yes, from what I can tell, (and I only know North America from reading and a liking for geography and lands…[Read more]

  • @davros I meant to send the message above to you, not @nerys,  about Lungbarrow. Have been reading about it, and, why not? There is so much swirling around after only two episodes.

  • @nerys I confess I had to look up Lungbarrow, but I see what you mean. Could Chibnall be throwing everything in? Including the kitchen sink?

@nerys good to hear that you are back safely despite car problems. Cars are such a mixed blessing.

Our second son is currently camping with friends and decided to take our large family tent which has not been used for a few years. He rang at about 7.00 pm last night to say that the tent poles were broken. Not sure how that eventuated.

    cheers

@nerys  Good to see you back in one piece even if your car has a few new pieces. It is nice that all your issues were fixed and you were on your way. A guardian angel for our car would be nice.

When we drove to B.C. we damaged the muffler day 2 , hubby repaired it but day 4 we hit a bump and it broke again. It sounded like a stock car until he…[Read more]

@nerys     Pleased to hear your trip went OK,  I seem to recall you were quite anxious about the prospect before you went.    To tell the truth, I often get slight feeling of trepidation when setting out on a long trip, even though I know a fair bit about my cars and have done almost every mechanical job on mine at one time or another.   But there…[Read more]

@nerys     Odd you should mention Bond.   I’ll get to the new Bond in due course, (thanks for not spoiling it!), but in the course of trying to tidy up my den, I rationalised my DVD’s, earmarked a few duplicates for disposal, and decided to complete my Bond collection (now DVD’s are fairly cheap).   So last night I re-watched Goldeneye (just g…[Read more]

To be fair, the Fatal Natal Day, as it came to be known, was 79 years ago (less 11 days), in the middle of the war and, as I said, several years before the NHS came into being; and the regime in hospitals at that time tended to be more authoritarian and strictly regimented than it is now. Nor, I think, was that hospital necessarily…[Read more]

@thane16    dentarthurdent and @janetteb   Thanks for the warm thoughts, the lad looks better every day and will soon be trying to leave us. Next weekend is our Thanksgiving holiday so I am keeping him here until then. Some turkey and pumpkin pie should top him up nicely.

@thane16 Also sorry ot hear about your Mum.

I have not yet watched Foundation but am looking forward to doing so when I can. It sounds promising.

@winston yes indeed. I hope that your son is fully recovered now. Our children never really grow up to us at least. Our eldest is…[Read more]

@thane16   and @nerys    It totally sucks to come to that time in your life when the people you looked up to and cling to, leave you. Losing my Mom and Dad left me feeling lost and adrift for a long time until I remembered that I was my grown children’s rock and I had to be strong for them. The role of child had ended for me and being mother and…[Read more]

You’ve expressed that better than I ever could.

yes indeed time will heal these things. Thank you so much.

@nerys my deep condolences regarding the death of your father – yes,  people with chronic /persistent illnesses or are vulnerable are most at risk and often the stipulated cause of death is the most recent. In your dad’s case, pneumonia; but as you say, long Covid is th…[Read more]

@nerys    Initially I just had a British passport with a New Zealand stamp in it that said something like ‘Permanent right of re-entry’.   Then I got my NZ passport so for a while I had two, perfectly legally.   (I wouldn’t have taken out NZ citizenship if either country had required me to relinquish my British citizenship.    In my case tax wasn’…[Read more]

@nerys     Oh yes, that tax thing is bizarre.   Considering the popular ‘Murican mantra that taxation is a form of theft, and their scorn for other countries (like Europe) that supposedly tax their citizens for social benefits, I’m surprised they stand for it.   But then I suppose the ones who are subject to it are overseas so can’t protest…[Read more]
