I blinked and missed with “Fancy” by Hugo Largo (enjoyed it). I’m slicing your ping-pong ball horizontally by remembering the great Siouxsie Sioux (I did explain the goth thing didn’t I?) recorded an album of interesting covers with “Through the Looking Glass”.
This isn’t one of them though. It’s part of “The Creatures” spin off, and not a particularly well known song. Its themes, bass line and general electronica create something quite hypnotic, and perhaps oddly familiar. (yes it’s another Delia inspired tune).
I’ll post responses to others tomorrow. Had a few problems logging in.

17 April 2013 at 22:36 #5999Just a general enquiry. I forgot to post a link to the release of a number of older spin-off books in spiffy new covers, one for each Doctor.
I don’t know if anyone reads these, but I’ve only read three, and was wondering if anybody had read the others to give me their thoughts?
The ones I’ve read are:
Remembrance of the Daleks (Ben Aaronovich) for the seventh, which is the only one of the pack that’s a tv story novelised. It’s a really late novelisation which allowed the authors a bit more creative freedom. It’s well written, allows for some neat characterisation and Dalek POV storytelling. Does suffer from a dose of the “Cartmel Masterplan” stuff that went into the New Adventures range.
Dreams of Empire (Justin Richards) for the second, which captures the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria quite well. The problem with it is that the main plot is interesting, but so involved with the support characters, the main crew seem like guest stars in someone else’s book. It’s a strange choice this one as I think a couple of other novels from the same BBC range at the time would have been better.
Last of the Gaderene (Mark Gatiss) for the third, I really enjoyed. It captures that Unit era with Jo Grant very well. It’s a very traditional story for that period, and therein lies its charms if you have the taste for it. Invasion by stealth through a secret facility located next to a small village. You know the score. Pertwee would have approved. His Doctor gets to jump behind the controls of a Spitfire at one point!

14 April 2013 at 12:52 #5511While we’re talking about a Mark Gatiss episode. @bluesqueakpip’s musings about her potentially being adopted put me in mind of George in “Night Terrors”.
The Doctor explained he was drawn by the aching need of people who wanted a child, and became that perfect child as far as possible. Rewriting their memories in doing so to become accepted.
I think the aspects of Clara that we are shown are her excelling in certain roles. Perfect child, perfect friend, perfect substitute mum – perfect companion? Almost like those relationships are what define her. Like George drawn by empathy to those in need. Looking back at the prequel she gives the Doctor the perfect encounter as a young girl, leaving him a bit more optimistic.
It’s when she’s asked about something individual that she seems to flounder. “What do you want to see” last episode and “What do you like doing” in this. It’s that core element of Clara that seems a blank slate. I was wondering if the doll was a throwaway representation of that idea. A “hollow girl” in some way.
By the way – that description is no slight to Jenna. I’ve found her performances delightful and I think Clara’s is going to be a great ongoing story.

I think those memories you form with music are really peculiar. I don’t know if anyone else has experienced something like this but:
My first proper snog (with lashings of tongue) was at a school disco. A big thing in a young chaps life. The song that was playing at the time I’ve therefore associated ever since with optimism and generally positive feelings. Why most people feel this is wrong when I tell them this is because the song was “Say Hello Wave Goodbye” by Soft Cell. Surely a really bitter, cold type of lament to failed love really?
But I can’t help it. I find it kind of uplifting. 🙂

I really want to watch the scene with Clara when she dives in after the screwdriver. That was a weird moment and I want to look at this Warner as a Doctor angle as well. Really thrilled by this.

It’s cropped up on the G thread that David Warner did some voice work as the Doctor and was tipped to play him at one point on screen. It’s funny that Liam Cunningham was actually auditioned for the TV movie. There is an interesting link on the BBC archive showing 16 different people who almost became the Doctor. It’s really unusual to think how some of them would have turned out.

That redesign really does work. It can be difficult to tell from publicity shots, but seeing it stomp about on screen was awesome.

@bluesqueakpip, yes I’d heard that before. Louise was great in the role and seemed to grasp the character in a way the writers never did. I saw her at a meeting once and she was blunt in that she would have preferred Leela to go out guns blazing to protect her “god” in the Doctor. She suggested her final words should have been “You see Doctor – I’ve become civilised” to emphasise her transition from “kill or be killed” savage to someone capable of self sacrifice.
If they had done that I think she would have been one of the most memorable characters in Who history.

This affection has remained with me through to adulthood. His remains one of only two “celeb” autobiographies I’ve ever read (“Who on Earth is Tom Baker”, the other being “Prince of Darkness” by Christopher Lee).

At this early stage, many did not know whether they were going to like him or not; viewers often said he would ‘take some getting used to’. The scene where he is trying on different outfits (Viking, etc) was so ingrained in my memory that when I got to see it years later it played out in extraordinary detail. I laughed again.
There was some very heady material in those stories as well. As a kid during those years I always had the feeling that I was watching something that I shouldn’t be watching. A marvellous feeling.

It really helped that he was aided and abetted by some great characters as assistants. Sarah Jane was always lovely, but goofy Harry was really endearing when he leapt in. I adored Leela and I still think the run of stories in Robots of Death/Talons of Weng Chiang/Horror of Fang Rock and Image of the Fendahl are some of the best of the classic run. I was really disappointed in the way she was written out. If any companion was going to die magnificently in the heat of battle surely it would be Leela? Nope – she got the hots for a Timelord personality black hole called Andred. Bizarre.
To follow those up with the double act of Mary Tamm and Lalla Ward as Romana aced it. While I’m aware that Mary left because she was disappointed about how her character had turned out, I think Lalla did a magnificent job in presenting a female Doctor. Eccentric, funny and intelligent.
I’ve read some comments from people that Tom appeared to give up after this in performance terms, but I think that misses the mark. There was a lot of crap going on in the background of the series (an entry in a book I read recently penned by Christopher H Bidmead is painfully joyous about how he and Nathan-Turner engineered his exit) and there is a peculiar melancholy that permeates his performance. A different fourth Doctor than earlier, but possibly suited to stories like Warriors Gate and Logopolis with their themes of entropy and decay.

Tom Baker was the personification of Moffat’s “Mad Man in a Box”. Brilliant, exasperating, eminently quotable, and undoubtedly a massive pain in the arse. My childhood would not have been nearly as pleasurable if he hadn’t been in that Blue Box.

I wouldn’t be so blunt, but it’s interesting he picked up on some traits that we’d discussed on our “Faces” strand that the Doctor was a bit of an uptight “D*ck” (i.e. very “TimeLordy”)in the beginning, and it was his association with humans that mellowed him.
It’s probably a controvertial interpretation in some quarters, but one I’ve always felt confortable with. It really does retrofit with the emerging story, and that the earliest incarnation would probably be a bit impatient with these troublesome “apes” he’d been landed with, while admiring their imagination, drive and sense of wonder at the same time.

Gosh. You’ve asked a big question. Whenever people ask me about dipping into the earlier era I tend to pick my favourites (which tend towards Tom Baker) but to avoid that….
I always suggest at some point going back to the first episode “The Unearthly Child” because it’s where all this stuff sprang from. I don’t know if you are aware, but Dan Martin is running a retrospective series on Who in the Guardian. This is the episode list so far (we’re due for “The Sea Devils” soon), and the first one deals with the Unearthly Child with a couple of snippets of video from that episode. We also have a “Faces of the Doctor” section that we’ve posted some thoughts on indidual Doctors on (with a few clips, etc.)
I also suggest “The Five Doctors”. I have mixed feelings about it but it does give people a fun 90 minute taste of what those first Doctors were about in one sitting (my young neice , who had never seen any of those Doctors before LOVED it). It probably also shows what a nightmare trying to cram 11 of the buggers into one 90 minute production would be like. 🙂
I’d say @htpbdet has picked some great episode in his list above. I’d also say we both share some issues towards the sixth and seventh Doctors, so I will just add: “Revelation of the Daleks” for the sixth, and “Curse of Fenric” or “Survival” for the Seventh.

10 April 2013 at 22:16 #5043I’ll just add my thoughts on Clara’s reaction to the TARDIS.
Back on the Snowman blog I suggested that Clara was perhaps a latent telepath, which the history of the show has always suggested is a possibility in humans. She may not be aware of this but her access to the Dalek telepathic pathweb, and her curious intuitive grasp of who the Doctor is, navigating the one word test, and the extreme reaction of the telepathic snow to her made me think she may be.
In this episode, maybe that scene is there to merely indicate that she senses some hostility or suspicion by being aware of the telepathic field that the Tardis emits? It leaves plenty of room for interpretation, but perhaps the suspicion she feels is being reflected by the TARDIS from the Doctor.
Victoria Clara passed a number of tests in that episode, the final being deducing the purpose of the umbrella on the rooftop. After that he declares “I don’t know the why – just the who” before presenting her with her key. She seemed to get unexpectedly emotional by that. He has not given modern Clara a key yet, and perhaps she hasn’t passed his tests? But by passing the tests, and making her demonstrate more Victorian Clara traits does that inevitably lead to an event that will turn an ordinary girl into past and future versions.
It’s interesting that AoTD featured an explanation of those personality traits the Daleks removed when creating a Dalek, and BoStJ featured a technology that could immediately alter a persons personality. In SMs twisted mirror universe is this another parable of the delights and dangers when the Doctor changes people?

Welcome @htpbdet. Don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of the new tools after a while. Hope you like the place, and as well as the new episodes, we have some ongoing conversations on old Who that I think you’d make some great contributions to. Our Faces of the Doctor strand for instance.
I think the point I was making was that the motivations and goals of the GI were left pretty open by the Troughton episodes. It wanted physical form as a means to an end, but the end was never really established. I think both the Snowmen and Bells have bookmarked those episodes pretty well and give the potential to develop the GI further. Yes, the Doctor suggested he’d banished the GI to space, but he was often wrong about the fate of dispelled adversaries. Sometimes they come back.
The Whispermen thing I haven’t seen, but by the Hush reference I think they are probably the top hat wearing eyeless creatures we saw in the series trailer? To me they look a bit more influenced in face by “The Trickster” who appeared in the Sarah-Jane series, but the dress and name “Whispermen” makes me think they are the next stage for the GI. A physical entity perhaps with his controlling power through whispers?

I can’t remember if the last time we “talked” was when you were going to ask a question on “Question Time” or whether you were taking the piss out of me and JaneBasingstoke? (I’d love to see her again – her determination that Madame Kovarian was a hero was brilliant and led to some lively discussions on the Who blogs).
The G certainly isn’t what it was. I couldn’t believe it when I heard that people like BeautifulBurnout had signed off. Really shocked. I only go there to try to tempt others to our little community.
I live on the South/West Yorkshire border so great to have another adopted Yorkshireperson about. If I remember correctly you were originally from the US?

7 April 2013 at 18:34 #4487@sheena444 – Don’t apologise at all. My first reaction last week was that the structure was a bit weird. On rewatching I decided that reaction was possibly due to it being jarring having a typical “introduction” episode for a character we have encountered before (in a couple of guises). Over the course of the week I got into it more, with spots and observations from other people making me realise I’d missed bits, potential subtext, etc.
This week, I genuinely came out of the episode thinking “This is fantastic” and was a bit taken aback by the vitriol. I think it dealt with some big concepts in a very poetic way. Possibly not to everyone’s taste, but I do admire a new view of the “Whoniverse”.
The parts I loved were the explanation of why Clara is “impossible”. Merry is a unique being, and the Doctor explains why. Everyone is unique. The ideas of Choas theory made real. The fact that the Doctor has now encountered three copies of the “unique” Clara is a great counterpoint.
I think this blog has become what I valued about the G ones. The bonkers theories, the jokes, and seeing constructive appraisal of others ideas to give you a new appreciation of the episode in question.
I really do thank everyone who joins up and decides to contribute their own viewpoint on what we’ve seen.

7 April 2013 at 16:42 #4463On the egyptology, it could be a coincidence but I wrote on last week’s blog that the Sycamore tree is important in Egyptian mythology as a sycamore stood at the boundary between the realms of life and death. The Sycamore is a native UK tree categorised as a Maple, and those trees in the shot looked pretty conistant to my amatuer eye. The more rounded look of the “palms” of the leaf in this episode also looked more consistant as well (when shown in the last episode, the leaf looked more “spikey”).

7 April 2013 at 16:03 #4447Lots of good thoughts from everyone on here. I rewatched it this morning before going out and pondering on the fairly pointless nature of my existance, and whether I am a moron or not.
My conclusion? I may be an easily pleased idiot, but a happy, easily pleased idiot trumps being a curmudgeon ANY DAY of the week.
Because on second rewatching I found I loved this even more than the first time.
The concepts are absolutely great – the ideas of chaos theory (another one for fractal fans), those delightful thoughts of unrealised realities, the array of infinite possibilities that somehow conspired to create you, me and well, all this. The days that never happened delivered through the potential of a simple leaf. For some reason, my thoughts went to the great Carl Sagan. Most people of my generation will probably remember some of his discourse on the Universe and Time from his marvellous programmes in the 70s and 80s. He was a poet in a scientist’s body. I think he would have bloody loved this.
I think Neil Cross delivered an episode that really fits well into this particular view of the Doctors life. I welcome it, and I look forward to “Hide”.

I’ll rewatch tomorrow, and consider if I’m a complete moron, but I don’t suspect that at all. I’m looking forward to the transcript of this episode by a site I use for quotes.

I have invited him to the light side (depends how you look) of the force by joining us. We need people like him (Clenched fist)….that ….we …don’t…. agree… with! (gasp)
I genuinely tried to start an argument on the “magic” front. NO-ONE GAVE A SHIT.
I will point this out to any smurf who objects in the future, if they claim that old Who “Did it Right” by science in some unfathomable way.

I thought you’d actually like this beforehand. I was hoping for more of an argument in my comments on the recent MIND ROBBER review about the magical nature of Doctor Who, but it was never meant to be (Lack of interest).
If you look at Star Wars, a big success, it was clearly a fusion between spiritual and technology that fuelled and maintained interest. I can’t remember the last “hard-sci-fi” product that was a mainstream success. I think the things that work in this arena play on our collective folk-lore and myths, re-inventing them for a new generation. I think SMs vision of Who does that really well.

I think with the pace of something like “The Almost People/Rebel Flesh” Two parter this could have been an absolute classic. The ideas, sets and implementation are absolutely fantastic, but 42 minutes isn’t really the time to deploy them to full effect.
I think I got my dates wrong. For some reason I thought Clara’s mum died the day Who came back. Not so. She died 16 days before that. Hmmmmmmmmm.

Really enjoyed it … BUT, what an idea to have translated to one of the old two parters!
So full of references. Clara’s mum dying on 9th March 2005? Susan? Tardis being a bit uppity? These packed episodes really demand rewatching. Like last week, the dialogue sped past.
Matt and Clara’s little presentations to the old God seemed really well pitched. Loved the indirect reference to Omega “I’ve been to a Universe created by the imagination of a madman”, and the entire “unrealised realities” of the leaf. Memory and the taking of them a definite recurring theme isn’t it.

It features director Timothy Combe, script editor Terrance Dicks, and actors Richard Franklin, John Levene, and Katy Manning. It’s very nice.
