@thane16     Happy New Year!  Congrats on conducting, it sounds exciting.

I give up on resolutions because I hate starting a new year with abject failure. It is hard to stay fit in the winter unless there is a gym or pool nearby or you like winter sports. These are a negative for me. I will admit that I am afraid of falling and hurting my leg aga…[Read more]

@dentarthurdent Pleased to hear your father’s Leicas were ‘collectable’, it’s nice when that happens.

Yes, it is! That made me so happy, especially since a charitable organization we support benefited from it.

Happy New Year to you and all! @mudlark @winston @janetteb @ps1l0v3y0u @thane16 and of course @craig

Happy New Year all. Best wishes for the year ahead.

@thane16 Lovely to hear from you.

@nerys and @dentarthurdent I share your distrust of cloud storage. I have multiple hard drives, one backup I carry with me, one is in a sideboard. I once had two backup hard-drives in my laptop bag which was stolen. Have also lost hard drives so I no longer…[Read more]

@mudlark    @nerys  @thane16  @dentarthurdent  @ps1l0v3y0u       and everyone else, just took a moment to say hello and Happy Who Year! We are still a few hours to midnight here and then the old year passes and a brand spankin’ new one begins. So exciting and full of possibilities.

Does anyone make new years resolutions? I have the usual ones lik…[Read more]

@thane16 syzygy And a merry Christmas to you, thankyou. So a cloud weighs 500 tons (or tonnes – pretty much the same thing). Does that include the weight of the air in it, or is that the additional weight of the water vapour? (Is water vapour heavier than air?) That would imply 500 cubic metres of liquid water. But (Googles) water vapour is…[Read more]

@thane16 @syzygy Good to hear from you! And thank you for that bit of trivia on how much a cloud weighs. A hundred elephants, eh? Heavier than I would have guessed. As is often the case with this group, I learned something!

    ‘Mind as the monster.’

Better than a man in a rubber suit. Or actors with facial prosthetics, my problem with Stat Trek, though The Founders were well realised. And now quite scary. ‘Solids’ are chaotic and dangerous. Democracy is chaotic and dangerous (to whom?)

So, the reason why The Mara were so good. Badly realised in the early 80…[Read more]

@thane16  syzygy   I’d agree, soaps are likely very difficult to write well.   Not least because they come out every night (some of ’em, at least).  How can anyone keep coming up with fresh original dialogue on that schedule?

And then, each of the half-dozen storylines gets cut up into 5-minute chunks which get screened intercut with the other…[Read more]

@thane16 Hi, thank you! and ish.

Yes the ‘hello’ really struck me. There’s usually a moment of confusion – though not so much I think with Fifteen? But at least, maybe a sense of being newborn. She was more as though she’d stepped through something.

@blenkinsopthebrave – yup, when I thought it, I thought I knew the lot that would appreciate…[Read more]

it’s easier to find duff eps pre twice upon a time than good ones after (up until RTD2 anyway)

9 eps per season does seem a bit mean, with not a lot of scope for additional writers. I would say the only real clunkers were Russ’ Legend and Empire. But did they clunker. I keep lookin…[Read more]

@winston Well, as I’ve already said, Season 5 at first ‘lost’ me to Who, probably because I was still recovering from Tennant withdrawal. (I now like Smith and Capaldi just as much as Tennant. I guess I’m a bit slow to accept change). On later re-viewing, I’ve enjoyed those episodes more. I still find S5 middling good, best episodes (for me) were…[Read more]

@thane16 Moff *is* clever, in fact I think he’s a genius at writing dialogue that is witty, ironic and surprising. (I’m a sucker for interesting, original turns of phrase, whether in book fiction or in TV drama). I think Moff’s era was the best of Who. RTD’s first era was very good too (I don’t know enough about his current one to judge it).

    To…[Read more]

Series 5 was wonderful from the very beginning to the bitter end. The Eleventh Hour was such a great introduction to a new Doctor and companion that my regeneration shock wore off quickly. The episode is set in one big lonely house  and a very small village with only a small amount of FX but…[Read more]

So that was the finale and it felt like a broken mirror – sparkly with lots of fragments.

In that spirit… my disconnected thoughts!

I think I’m probably more in the camp of @Whohar and @thane16 on the finale.

Whoever said “the rule of cool” below is something I also feel about RTD.

@thane16 Not sure at present, it’s entirely how the BP thing is is going to play out  and how the recommissions of the next series goes, if she’s here as a permanent Doctor  and a new season is given the go ahead I suspect a Xmas special may be in the offing even if all we fan expect over next year is 2 or3 specials as a form of hiatus whils…[Read more]

I’d recommend watching The Reality War, as they are basically one story split over two parts; it might provide context (or it might leave you more confused).

It looks like I am out of step with almost everyone on here, barring perhaps @thane16 . I really didn’t enjoy it at all; I wanted to, I really did, but it was an incoherent mess in the main. Spectacle over storytelling, which meant that the big story beats didn’t resonate with me.

I do miss the gritty old prosaic Who.
