    @puroandson

Hope your having a terrific Christmas in Aussieland!

Well I have to admit to being a teensy bit sloshed and everything seemed REALLY  funny .

Guess  I had a   “Missy”   moment where strange things seems awfully amusing only

    mostly to her?     🙂

( good thing I wasn’t left alone in my kitchen for very long before the elves showed up?)

Oops- sorry to post without a tune on the music thread  but I will find 1 and put it up later !!!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday!!!

not a problem in the least. “All things are funny some of the time or funny is all things to some”

Yes, we are and hope you are too. 🙂

Now, I’ve completely hogged the boards

<ducks> but quickly must compliment @bluesqueakpip on her returning avatar which I recall from two years ago when I first joined up

    Arbutus @arbutus

Loved everyone’s Christmas songs, with an especially thank you as always to @fatmaninabox for the Blyth Power. (It was a bit of an evil day the day you introduced me to that band! 🙂 )

@puroandson    I think the tritone was mentioned at one point. Isn’t that fun?

Ha! We were just talking about A Fish Called Wanda the other night. We looked up the gold fish eating scene to show Arbutus Jr. It made me want to watch it again, I haven’t seen it in years! My son being a choirboy, he fortunately enjoys the traditional carol stuff. But his favourite Christmas recording is probably still the Michael Bublé one from a few years back. Oddly (for a teenage boy), this is his favourite track:

    yep @fatmaninabox sad news indeed.

Here he is on The Young Ones which was a hell of a way to first hear this as a young’un meself.

    Whisht @whisht

    on a happier note…..

here is Aretha Franklin doing her version of Carole King’s song better than King, Whitney Houston, Mary J Blige, Joss Stone… and better than Aretha herself did when she sang for Clinton.

Don’t watch the video (I’m of an English/Irish sensibility so the crowd reactions including King’s kinda grates on me), but if you do, watch it then ‘listen’ again without the video and concentrate on the voice.

I think Aretha is 73 when she’s singing this. And for once, mentioning age or illness or other factors isn’t an excuse for a poor performance, but merely incidental.

I haven’t been able to find the ‘perfect’ song to go along with my wishes for everyone for 2016.

So instead here is a song that has something to do with the season we’ve just watched (for me at least!).
Its quite heart-rending (to me) yet filled with hope.

We’ve had a Doctor facing up to the fact that not everyone lives forever – its just not possible.
But Life cannot be about being immortal – its about living every day and realising how beautiful a thing that is.

Anyway, that sounds a bit like sanctimonious/ sentimental codswallop (mainly due to my inability with getting the right words at the right time!) and Coyne says it much better.

Ah, sweet.  Haven’t listened to Flaming Lips for a long time, and that sound sure has changed a lot since.

A nice version of a Beethoven piece just  because of the reference the Doctor

made to his music this past season,  (particularly Ms.  @puroandson)

    Oh… wow.

According to the BBC, David Bowie has died.

This song has a strong Whovian link:

@bluesqueakpip @ichabod Heard the news as I was waking up and now feeling very numb. A huge part of my childhood and teenage years. Currently listening to 6Music which is playing nothing but Bowie today. I think this is also a fitting tribute. He produced it and did some amazing backing vocals.

    Cath Annabel @cathannabel

Been listening to Bowie since we got up this morning.  Cried so much my face was wet.  No other musician has been as much part of my life, for over 40 years, and still doing new and great stuff (we listened to Black Star on Saturday night and it was brilliant).  Managed to gather my thoughts enough to write something:

Shocking news. His songs and their allusive lyrics get a life of there own – as this one, which is fundamentally about making out on the Berlin Wall in full view of the East German guards (a bit of a West Berliner youths’ thing at the time).

But seeing this on Top of the Pops 2 on the mid-1990s, then realising I saw it first time round, was what made me accept I was no longer a youth:

    Miapatrick @miapatrick

So sad, and coming, it feels, so close to the death of Lou Reed.

The wonderful thing about Bowie, though, was the fact that he wasn’t done. In a way, asking when his peak period was is as nonsensical as asking which of my dogs is my favourite (whichever one I have hold of right now.)

I’m glad Blackstar was released before it was known he was ill- I don’t think it was known- it would have been impossible to review the album objectively, and this way he went out with some fantastic reviews and responses.

When I was very young, the first time I watched Labyrinth, I turned around and said that ‘that man could be a successful singer’, much to the amusement of my family. It took me a few years to point out that I was eight years old at the time, and the only music I really knew about was that my family played. It wasn’t my fault they were Andrew Lloyd Webber fans…

I think it was Bowie, who when asked (rather rudely) why he was wearing a woman’s dress, replied that he wasn’t. He was wearing a man’s dress.  Oh, and he once made caused me to spend £5 on a bin bag with a hole it in it, in torrential downpour while watching him at Old Traffard.

@pedant Just in case you missed this. Perhaps a bit over melodramatic, but a great sentiment.

    @craig

I just stumbled upon that performance (after already posing here). It is a stunning rendition.

    #50081

Gathered some thoughts on this: Rebels, heroes and genies (includes link to a hilariously pompous Martin Amis piece from 1973).

    Whisht @whisht

Well I have neither adequate words or ability to link to anything, due to being away, travelling (ironically?) to a family funeral.

On trying to think of a single song or moment about Bowie is like thinking of *everything* that’s happened musically (hell, culturally) over last 40 or 50 years.

    #50088
    Anonymous @

    @craig @lisa @pedant @bluesqueakpip

Thank you for the links. Whilst I was away, a friend thought it best not to reveal the news until this morning. I had no idea until about 10 hours ago.

Anyway, I did an MMA on Bowie -quite the experience. I’ve probably mentioned this before. Anyway 🙂

I recall having to go thru ‘procedures’ to retain a mentor to permit me to study Bowie’s output and the general exclamation (sneer) was “huh? Him. No. Not at all”.

Eventually, the Dean agreed. I actually was ‘hooked’ up by phone to David Bowie for about 30-40 mins with Prof listening all the way through…I was incredibly nervous, surrounded by scribbled questions and even stuttered: “er, hello, sir, Mr Bowie?” (what a nut!)

My prof had to move the phone away before he spat out his scotch (he’d started early) with hilarity closely followed by shooting motions at his head  (meaning, “oh God, how embarrassing, you twit”).

    But.

Mr Bowie, aware of this set-up said, “ah, darlin’ sit down, ‘ave a cup of tea. I can hear you moving all your papers. So how are you, love, wot? You play something? Oh, and call me David.”

Stunning to have the Legend calm me down.

When I left the Dean’s hall, some of the students, massing quietly outside his room (it was about midnight) started clapping and singing ‘Changes’. I’m pretty sure they were drunk- news had slowly spread that the ‘mouse’ was doing a ‘thing’. It was kept fairly quiet beforehand. I owe my Dean a lot for that little opportunity into this rarefied world of glam rock/experimental/ etc. And I was grinning for days.

Mr Bowie: a terrific guy every which way.  Typically, I can hold the tears until I log in here and see the links to specific songs -and their excellent renditions.

    Kindest,

    Puro Solo.

    @puroandson

I wish! No longer live locally. It was done by someone at the Abbey. Very moving. There’s another angle I’ve seen that runs a few seconds past the end and there were obviously a fair few people in the building, from the applause.

    Hello  emperor @craig

agree totally -awesome talent. Look at those records (mum calls ’em vinyls!)

I think he sped up a bit -I don’t know much about this stuff but an older friend spins a deck ??

It’s pretty weird. I liked David Bowie a lot. We hear the story of the phone call a lot too. Why would you call him “mr” I used to ask and Mum would glare. I get it now, though. More so yesterday.

    Thankyou

Hi all – really enjoyed the music from pedant, arbutus, Craig and puro.

Apologies for being away this past coupla weeks – hopefully will have a bit more time for posting stuff.

    This is terrible.

I remember going out with this dude who was all “The Eagles are SO derivative” and I punched him.

Awesome moment. From then on, I made every effort to listen to any and all Eagles songs -a different friend of mine has every single album, book, signed shirt etc. He’ll be feeling the pain and I imagine in many homes people will pick up old vinyls, CD (okay iTunes thingies) and be re-living some nostalgic moments.

    Bless Glenn

well, here’s a song that sprang to mind via a conversation on another thread.

Then I heard the lyrics (again) and realised that it might be thought of as being connected to Moffat leaving, but no.

I was thinking of a crane!

Another ‘conversation’ luckily also brought this gem to mind.

    Which I was thankful for.

    @puroandson –

Scion of Ilion – just wishing your mum a speedy recovery.
Looking for a suitable song, I was just re-reading some PMs your mum sent me to help me with my rather stupid blog a couple of years ago. Faced with a rather dumb question about medieval music from me, she instead explained a lot of what was actually going on in music at that time.

Waaaaayyyyyy over my head. Most of it still is!!

    ;¬)

But I can keep going back over what she told me, so I can still learn!

Here’s a couple of things from those emails that she might enjoy (if she tuts and says “oh that ol’ crap” then fair do’s!!).

This one was to me, surprisingly rowdy – but its long (though made up of short pieces) so I’ll just link rather than embed!!

and here’s something from me, though I fear I’ve linked to it before.
    Something quiet. Yet beautiful.

    Hope she gets home soon.

ha ha – thanks Ob-wan, Puro

If I’m being honest, I was having a little bit of fun with that, but I was semi-serious about the track.

I actually think the lyrics are quite poetic!

But @puro – with misheard lyrics I find it best to BELT out the lyrics at the top of your lungs.
LOUD is far better, though obviously only with the words you know – the others of course are mumbled.

    So… I tend to sing

“Your heart is a big box of paints
la la le le la lerrrrrrrrhhh rrrrhhhaints
Your heart is a big box of paints
    arrreeerrrhhhhheerrrhhhrr rrr
    The artists sing:
    AWAKEN YOU DREAMERS
    Asleep in your beds
    Ribbons and streamers
DECORATE THE, inside of your head
dummm dummd dum, do it today,
and don’t let the hhmmmmm hmm ones
hmmm you a world wrapped in grey”

(its why I linked to the lyrics in my original post!)

    😉
