Hi there,

Completely new to this forum, looks awesome though! Just wanted to ask some fellow whovians about a cosplay. So I am making a 11th Doctor cosplay for McM this october, and have most parts apart from the jacket. Looking at it, if you’re going for accuracy it does seem a little short and a little dark. Tweed is a bugger, because good tweeds aren’t that cheap anyway (but last for decades).

Sci-fi collector used to do a really good Harris replica from Series 5 (but at £275 – ouch). It was in this range but seems to have sold out.

This blog has some advice (pointing out the basic tweed did change), but still costly. I think a lot of effort can be put into getting the look exactly right (and a lot of snobbery from certain cosplayers if they don’t do it “their way”) but for me it’s always been if you can carry off the idea of the Doctors costume and perhaps customise it to suit you (the best female cosplayers seem to understand this when creating female versions of Doctor costumes).

If you go down the route of the darker tweed, there are a few treatments that can be used to gradually lighten it. The fixatives in tweed are ammonia based, and a couple of treatments with some conventional cleaning products that are ammoniacal based in diluted form can be gradually used to lighten the tone. If you decide to go down that path, let me know, and I’ll do my best (originally a chemist, studying in Bradford, and we had our own museum of colour chemistry in fabrics).

Above all – look in your local markets and second hand clothes shops (like charity shops). I was in Birmingham last year and saw an actual Harris tweed that wasn’t far away from the series 5 episode going for a (River) Song at £15.

@phaseshift – as to where the Doctor found another Paul Smith shirt, pick one of

a) he knows Paul Smith and asked him to make another shirt or

b) living in a ship that can reconfigure architecture and machinery on demand, he just said ‘another shirt like this one, but in blue’.

I’d make a similar guess about the jacket; once he’d decided he wanted a tweed jacket he kept the one from the hospital – but there was also another tweed jacket in the TARDIS wardrobe. Like all the AG Doctors (and many of the BG Doctors), Smith’s Doctor isn’t that fussed about wearing the same clothes all the time so long as he’s in the same general style.

Doing big bang 2 doctor, and to much anyway :/ however, i bought the PERFECT jacket in primark this morning, 4 buttons on sleeve, 2 at front, one split at back , elbow pads, right pattern, 2 front pockets, 2 inside pockets, right size, everything. Only problem was the colour, to dark :/ ah well

That’s not a theory, it’s a question.  And it misinterprets what the Tardis translation circuits do, which is, translate foreign/alien languages so they appear to be written and spoken in the native language of the Tardis traveller.

If you do have theories about Doctor Who regarding past, present, or future episodes / companions / monsters / plots / story arcs etc, then this is the site to air your theories and engage in discussion with other members.

An example of a theory would be:  ‘I think the version of the Doctor played by John Hurt will turn out to be a regeneration of Jenny from ‘The Doctor’s Daughter’ episode from Tennant’s era, and I believe this because of X, Y, and Z which I saw in episodes N, NN, and NNN.’

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to make a sonic screwdriver into a key to open a box shaped like a TARDIS? As in, you’d have the TARDIS box and the only way to open it would be to aim the sonic screwdriver at it. So like an RFID or magnets or something? (can you tell I’m not an engineer?)

That is, are you going to make your own, or use one of the toy ones?

If making your own, I’d probably look into stuff like the infra-red locks they use for dog/cat doors. Put the tag in the screwdriver, and the door lock in the TARDIS.

Less Doctor Who, more Doctor “Why Don’t You?” (one for fans of a certain age there).

There are numerous ways of doing this, but most rely on a little bit of electronics. I’ll start with a “no tech” option.

“No tech” option.

Get an 11th Doctor Toy screwdriver and, in the four prongs near the head, drill small holes to accommodate 4 x 1mm Neodymium magnets. Make a sliding latch inside the box with a larger neodymium magnet and then use the screwdriver the draw the bolt back. That’s about as simple as it gets. Be warned though, you now have a pretty powerful magnetic device. Keep it away from electronic storage media or you may discover new screwdriver abilities like erasing data/rendering them useless.

Electronic options

To make it effective you need the activator in the screwdriver, but it’s the receiver that does all the work. Getting them configured will be the problem if you don’t have much knowledge. @bluesqueakpip s idea of a catflap is an excellent one, because you get the activator and receiver already configured. As well as the IR models, you can get the chip sensitive locking flaps, and magnet sensitive.

Just carefully disassemble the flap itself to recover the lock mechanism and battery pack (for IR and Chip models) to fit to the box. If batteries are needed you’ll need to modify the box so you can replace them from the outside. Just be warned, modifying a 9/10 screwdriver is a pain in the arse due to construction issues and the very tightly packed head which you can’t do much with. Go for an 11.

It’s worth asking about to see if you have any friends/friends of friends who are hobbyists. We don’t wear t-shirts because requests to fix stuff can become tedious. Leading questions like “I’ve heard the Raspberry Pi is interesting – know anyone who has one” will identify the nerd of your dreams. Increasingly popular in schools, so don’t forget students, who could ask teachers. Someone who dismisses the Pi as a toy is probably an uber nerd and should be challenged to do your project without one. He will accept just to prove he can. They should be able to rig up a bespoke IR system to the electronic actuated lock of your choice with parts for less than 20 quid. It’s even easier with either an existing TV Screwdriver Remote (expensive but easier to configure) or a Wii Screwdriver remote (cheaper but more work).

Hello fellow whovians,

Today, I’m writing this thread because I would like to talk about a new game about U.N.I.T. called “U.N.I.T.: The Game”.

This project started about a year and a half ago, when we (me and another person) talked about U.N.I.T.’s role in Doctor Who and then we started this project.

Our project is an interactive game based on the operating system of U.N.I.T. and aims to disseminate U.N.I.T., which is not is not widely spoken on Doctor Who but had and has a very important role in the Doctor’s life and in the life of the series.

The objective of this project is to simulate the U.N.I.T. operating system and consult all available information about U.N.I.T., for example, know the name of the agents of U.N.I.T., which vehicles they used so far, which weapons they used so far, the equipment that is used by U.N.I.T. agents, all organized in a way that resembles the fictional website created by BBC, “TOP SECRET: U.N.I.T.”

What do we have so far:

-More than 100 (and raising) UNIT officers and people employed by UNIT;

-More than 20 UNIT facilities (including departments, bases, foreign divisions, and other facilities);

-More than 30 vehicles used by UNIT officers (including aquatic vehicles, ground vehicles and air vehicles);-10 ground operations and projects started by UNIT;

-More than 20 firearms, equipment and suits used by UNIT officers;

 

What do we have to add to this game:

-More than 30 battles and wars that happened in the history of Doctor Who (including earthly wars and alien wars);

-More than 30 alien and earthly (mostly alien) fauna species;

-More than 5 alien flora;

-More than 300 individuals from diferent alien species (like the Ood from the “Pond Life” and his history; Alaya from “The Hungry Earth” and “Cold Blood” and her history, and others);

-More than 500 planets;-More than 1.000 species (and raising);

-More than 200 vehicles that don’t belong to UNIT;

-A personal profile of the Doctor, including his history, his species history, the technology and the tools that he use and the TARDIS;

-Information about other organisations that worked alongside UNIT such as Torchwood and British Royal Army.

These numbers are approximate values because information continues to increase and we do not know for sure the total number of each category.

The first beta version of this game will, at first, be launched on November 23rd of 2013, at the same hours that the first episode of Doctor Who premiered in 1963 and wee are counting with your support and cooperation to make this project successful.

I must underline that all information in this game is based on real information, from trusted sites like BBC. This game is based in a science-fiction tv show and it will remain that way, so don’t take it to real life.

Hey guys, I am a fairly new Whovian.  This is actually my first post on here.  I am planning on going to the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2014.  I want to do some cosplay as the 10th Doctor.  I just got low top red Converse.  I am looking for a blue pin striped suit and his long brown coat.  I also will need the 10th’s blue sonic screwdriver.  I am working on growing the David Tennant hair.  I was also wondering what members here have been to Comic-Con or any other cosplay conventions.  What have you seen Doctor Who wise?  I’ve heard that there is a 11th Doctor and Amy Pond look a like competition.  Also what else could I add to make my 10th Doctor costume to make it cooler.  Opinions are appreciated.  Thanks, -Noah
