@janetteb @ps1l0v3y0u Libraries are great. I love our local library, in fact I could live in the library surrounded by books and archives and dvds. Ours now lends out life preservers and park passes and gives weekend craft kits to kids. They give tech help which I have needed now and then. They also have a Lego club! My librarians help me g…[Read more]

the animated arms are a bit distracting.
I think they should have cut to the remaining actual footage of Oak and Quill’s gas attack (kindly preserved by the Australian censors.) It is still absolutely terrifying.
Your library system sounds impressive!

It’s a bind.
On the one hand, why does The Corp insist on trying to ‘set the tone’ for the program? Why CAN’T Who be unashamedly kidult? Because it’s a scratching post for antiwoke, pro-bechdel, anti-exploitative, ‘loadarubbish/don’t understand’, don’t frighten the horses & is this where our license fee goes brigades. Most of…[Read more]

@ps1l0v3y0u I think Day of the Doctor is the only Who novelisation I’ve read.
Getting a bit further in the book, I’ve notice that the Moment (Rose) doesn’t seem to feature at all in the dungeon in the Tower of London. I distinctly remember, from the TV episode, her leaning against the wall in the background, invisible to the two later Doct…[Read more]

So, your reading of “with or without Disney’s involvement” is that The Mouse is still interested, whereas we all thought he’s skipped away? But why go if he’s interested? They want a better deal. Yeah, that could be out of Trump’s playbook.
But do we know they are still ne…[Read more]

Hi @janetteb Nice to hear from you. I was planning to re-watch from the three final Chibs ‘specials’ up to current, but I might push my start point back to this episode, and see if the subsequent Fluxisodes make any more sense to me than first time around. But that will be in a couple of weeks time, I’m currently watching Red Dwarf season…[Read more]

@janetteb @ dentarthurdent
thank you. Village is obviously streets ahead of the rest. Not perfect but I could virtually watch it in one go: always a good sign. The previous 2 were poor but not as disastrous as most of series 11 or 12. Most of that is down to ‘the chuckles’ I’m afraid.

Hi @janetteb Great to hear from you.
Obviously, I agree with you. Of the JW seasons, I think I found the Flux most disconcerting – partly because I lost the plot 🙂 and partly because universe-wide total destruction I always find depressing, rather than scary. I most identify with the characters when the danger is individual and person…[Read more]

@janetteb Even ‘older fans like us’ have grown accustomed to a vastly higher level of production values than we found acceptable in the early days. And even as late as Seven, there was a big (and visible) difference between Seven’s last eps and Rose.
@ps1l0v3y0u Ooh, lists. I must admit I can’t (or won’t) comment on docs 1-6. For 7, The Curse of…[Read more]

I’m afraid people aren’t saying you shouldn’t watch Star Trek TOS, or early James Bond films, so that’s not fair! I think the only difference is that the first two Doctors’ eras were made in B&W. In that case, what’s needed is more colourisations, but without editing out parts of the story, which was done with “The Daleks” or discarding…[Read more]

1. Unearthly Child, The Daleks, Marinus… because it’s both complete and quite other, the Time Meddler, and whatever is left of Dalek Master Plan and 10th Planet.

@janetteb Thanks for that.
That Red Dwarf podcast, sounds like you were all having fun (I assume you were the janette mentioned?)
FWIW, I think they at their best around Seasons 3-5. I just watched Back to Reality, which is as meta as you can get – the crew find that they’ve been in a total immersion video game for the last four years,…[Read more]

Doctor Who wouldn’t even exist without the First Doctor and wouldn’t have continued for so long without the Second Doctor and regeneration. I suppose the BBC could have replaced William Hartnell with a lookalike, followed by another lookalike, ad infinitum, but they would have had to be good actors as well.…[Read more]

@janetteb @dentarthurdent @ps1l0v3y0u The fear and menace was as thick as butter in this one. There is something behind you, no don’t turn around ,don’t look! Wait, what? What is behind me? We don’t know but don’t try to find out or it gets angry. I wouldn’t last a minute.

@ps1l0v3y0u @janetteb Definitely my favourite episode since, um, Boom or Wild Blue Yonder.
I’ve just noticed another similarity to Aliens in the plot, in the ‘dropping down to scout a base which has been massacred by some unknown enemy’. Though I guess it’s a common enough scenario.
Quite aside from ‘let’s take off and nuke the site from…[Read more]

Annoying. You could rename it Episode 0, after all it worked with the Laws of Thermodynamics 🙂

@janetteb Agreed. Yes, ensuring continuity would be a full-time job (or a nightmare, depending how you look at it) with a long-running series with dozens of writers like Dr Who. I suspect the timeline is so convoluted by now that I’m not sure any writer could be expected to know it all, even absent inconsistencies. (And Chibs’ cavalier attitude to…[Read more]

I’m 4 eps in series on 1. The ratings are stellar, especially for the ‘repetitive’ series 2. I really do prefer Severance though… so far.
Apparently they were working on a film treatment for Wool but then streaming came along. There are obvious and maybe superficial echoes of Doctor Strangelove, THX 1138, Boy and His Dog, Lo…[Read more]

I could be wrong but I think the Rani implied the infertility was caused by the Death Particle Event when it was released as some kind of secondary effect thus ensuring the supposed death of the Timelord race so the continuity was actually preserved as up until that point they could have children it’s just that any Timelord that ma…[Read more]

I’m also watching Andor – about 2 eps in (similarly slow in watching things). Apparently, there are three lots of three eps, each representing a year, so three years in total. It does pick up from where Season 1 left off.
Would recommend watching this season and then Rogue One afterwards (if you’ve not already seen it).
