    Cool.

So is there an idiomatic meaning/ translation that captures the way the message gets garbled?

I think the “nudges” idea has legs.

But also there is a theme of inadequacy and its relationship to cruelty. Tim Shaw was a cheat, Epzo a social cripple willing to cheat (but prevented by the rules); James Blake a spiteful racist who escaped to fishing. A bus driver abusing his power; and the spiders too big to live a perfect…[Read more]

Out of interest is there a Chinese equivalent of what we call “Chinese Whispers” (ie a message gets more and more garbled as it is passed along)?

Or, as pedant might say “anecdote isn’t in itself a truth” -and I might have that totally wrong.

Anecdote isn’t the singular of evidence.

An anecdote might be true, though.

The short answer is no, because reason and faith deal with entirely different things. This is despite the fact that many of the earliest profound insights for what we now call science (which is reason’s greatest achievement) were made in monasteries. But to William of Occam, the existence of God was not an assumption. His razor is still…[Read more]

Except that we won’t be able to gather our crops, because the southern and east European labourers who do it won’t be here.

And every other country will still be part of the trade agreements that we have just ejected ourselves from.

“Self-sufficient” does not mean what you think it means.

Fun fact: EU subsidies make up the entire profit margin of British agriculture.

Also: at any one time the UK has on hand between 4 and 7 days food.

Also (also): we do not have the customs infrastructure to deal with things (at the Tunnel there is literally nowhere to build a customs post).

So (so (so)): the only solution…[Read more]

(also, this is a show that once used white actors in ‘yellowface’ to depict Chinese characters).

I understand it’s offensive intellectually but don’t feel offended emotionally, it just feels ridiculous and funny.

    That’s a really interesting point.

I wonder if part of this is the relationship of slavery between black and white,…[Read more]

I think there is some misunderstandings.what mean is that racism or sexism isn’t a white thing, it’s a human thing.

I don’t think you would find anybody here who would disagree with you. But Doctor Who is a UK show sold (until now) to largely Western markets, where the primary privilege is held by white males, so it is bound to ref…[Read more]

:shrugs: It seems to me we all came here because we were tired of that sort of nonsense on the Guardian.

The problem with treating small-minded little Hitlers as jokes to be pointed and laughed at is, one minute you’re a joke and the next you’re president of Brazil.

You made a statement that was incorrect.

    I corrected it, with example.

And to correct your next incorrect statement:

In the case of expansion, the UK was driving it. We were never, in any way, a passive actor “choosing not to agree” and going with the flow.

Fun fact: Leavers were outraged by draconian EU regulations to limit the power of household appliances for carbon emission purposes.

Yes, those shadow puppets! I’d love to know if that was in the script, or was something the actor came up with.

I was thinking exactly the same. I think I’m going with inspired improv until proven otherwise.

Definitely about the CGi. Someone had done some actual motion analysis AND grasped that big chitin-based lifeforms are not viable.

Also, Ryan’s shadow puppets int he background. Absolutely LOLled at that.
