i also loved Dark Water but was not to impressed with Death In Heaven (Michelle Gomez was superb though) as for the finale I’m not going to give anything a way but for me personally it was a game of two halves!

10 March 2016 at 07:22 #51274@dalektor I don’t really know why people seem to not like the seventh doctor but it might be something to do with the viewing figures and the show’s cancellation which makes people hold a grudge against him. The eleventh doctor Matt Smith is one of my favourites I just thought he was absolutely brilliant and he even said he took inspiration from The great Patrick Troughton. Matt Smith I thought was better than David Tennant I just thought he felt more doctorish (if that’s a word now!)
P.S I think Ace is a great companion as well!

As I have probably mentioned before (just a few times!) I think the 2nd doctor is my favourite and for someone like you who likes the 7th doctor I reckon you would love the 2nd. I would recommend either The Mind Robber or The Seeds of Death if you wanted to have a taste of Patrick Troughton’s style (The Mind Robber is probably the best surviving example of Patrick at his best)
As for the new series I think Peter Capaldi is my favourite as he ticks all the right boxes of what a doctor should be in my opinion!
@winston Good point as I also find that the Doctor that I am watching usually goes up in my estimation!
While I’m here on this thread I’ll just let you all know that my Pertwee watch has just finished the Ambassadors of Death which I hadn’t previously seen, The first two Pertwee stories were really good and so is the next one I’m about to watch (Inferno) but Ambassadors was just too slow for me. I did like the first part but began to lose interest towards the end but never mind it’s still got somethings to enjoy about it! (I liked the warehouse fight scene!)

If the Daleks did win then I imagine that they would somehow manipulate and erase bits of time itself so that whole races never even existed so they would not need to destroy them making it easier for the Daleks to win. Other than that I bet they would get just a tiny bit bored maybe resurrect races to destroy again.
3 March 2016 at 07:21 #51171Hello everyone thanks for the responses I’m agreeing with most of your suggestions @bluesqueakpip I really enjoy Capaldi on his own but I agree that it wouldn’t work for a whole season.
I’m getting the impression that we’re all a bit fed up of the young 21st century girl and I think this shows that other companions work well as we’ll take Donna for example she was brilliant and she didn’t fancy the Doctor. Clara also worked better I think when she didn’t fancy the doctor (Capaldi). Great debate this!

You don’t necessarily need to name actors or actresses but just what kind of a person/alien would you like to see travelling with The Doctor.
I personally am a bit fed up of the 21st century girl now and I would quite like to see some sort of a character from earth’s history such as Jamie or Victoria in the TARDIS I would also quite like two companions like Amy and Rory as I thought that worked well.
Just wondering what you all thought!

i think Colin Baker would have a few things to say if he saw Pertwee in his technicolour coat.
Showrunners these days I think probably have more say in what kind of doctor they want but every actor always somehow finds a different way of portraying this 50 year old character in fact I find it quite amazing how we are still getting different takes on the doctor today. It’s a wonder how the actors who have played the character keep it fresh and exciting.
29 February 2016 at 20:41 #51122Hello everyone I’m sorry I haven’t posted for a while I’ve been quite busy lately but now that all that’s over I just thought I’d let you all know that I have embarked on quest – to watch every Jon Pertwee story in order from start to finish. I’ve just finished watching episodes 1 – 3 of Spearhead from Space which I’ve already seen but I have to say it’s a very strong opening for the Pertwee era.
The reason I chose Pertwee was simply because I have all the Pertwee episodes on DVD but I have to admit I haven’t see them all so there are some episodes I will be seeing for the first time on the marathon (The ambassadors of death, the mind of evil, colony in space, the mutants, the time monster and invasion of the dinosaurs are the ones I haven’t seen).
Pertwee is a great doctor with a lovely charm and sophistication that I admire and I do think he is one of my favourites but Pat Troughton (My favourite) is the complete opposite which just goes to show that no matter how different the doctor can be they all have something to like about them.
when thinking of Pertwee you often think of ‘the UNIT family’ which is a good thing as it does add some familiarity to the show (familiarity isn’t always a good thing though) with this unit family you definitely feel as though you know the characters and it does add some nice qualities to the character of the doctor that were previously unseen.
the Pertwee era is fantastic with plenty of great stories and a consistently high quality I would say (let’s overlook Peladon shall we!) and I’m looking forward to going through this era of the show and revisit some stories and discover new ones. Anyone who isn’t familiar with Pertwee then I recommend him as he truly is a great doctor.
18 February 2016 at 22:21 #51025@kharis I have to admit I do not really understand who the watcher is only that he is some version of The Doctor but I do know something and that is that The Watcher is one of the scariest things in Doctor Who. I’m not sure if I’m alone here but does anyone else feel very uneasy or slightly unnerved when you see the watcher on the other side of the motorway gesturing to The Doctor to come to him. It’s such an eerie image of this surreal being in such an everyday place. It’s just the thought that you don’t really know who he is or what he wants. When I first watched I thought it was some sort of Angel or possibly the White Guardian but of course that can’t make sense. I really love the mystery surrounding him though.

So have any of you ever met a Doctor or anyone Doctor Who related.
8 February 2016 at 07:30 #50908@kharis As far as I know there wasn’t but i’d have to rewatch to confirm. It did have a classic vibe though and I have to say it was the best use of music in the new series. Absolutely beautiful honestly it stunned me how good it was.

Thanks for bringing up gridlock as i forgot how good an episode it is and I’m afraid to say that I haven’t seen the Romans yet but I’m planing on getting it soon. I do advise getting some 5th,6th and 7th doctor episodes though because some of them are really good (Earthshock, Remembrance of the Daleks and The Caves of Androzani Spring to mind) In fact the 7th doctor is one of my favourites. Enjoyed your list and again agreed to most of it!

Jon Pertwee (3rd) : Spearhead from Space, Inferno, Day of the Daleks
Tom Baker (4th) : Genesis of the Daleks, Terror of the Zygons, Seeds of Doom, The Talons of weng-chiang, The Deadly Assassin,brain of morbius, robots of death
Peter Davison (5th) : Earthshock, Caves of Androzani, Resurrection of the Daleks
Colin Baker (6th) : sorry I haven’t watched too many of these and didn’t like the ones I have seen
Sylvester McCoy (7th) : remembrance of the Daleks, survival
Paul McGann (8th) : didn’t like the movie sorry
Christopher Eccleston (9th) : empty child/doctor dances
David Tennant (10th) : waters of Mars, human nature/family of blood, blink
Matt smith (11th) : eleventh hour, time of angels/flesh and stone, impossible astronaut/day of the moon, Cold War, day of the doctor
Peter Capaldi (12th) : into the dalek, mummy on the orient express, dark water (didn’t like the last part-death in heaven), under the lake/before the flood, heaven sent
I do like other stories but these are the true classics in my opinion.

@missy Well that was definitely worth the wait. I agree with you on most points and am glad to see that you rate series 1 so highly, I agree with you on series 2 and 3 but have to say that I don’t like partners in crime a great deal. Series 5 is personally my favourite Matt smith series so I am glad to see you like it (I liked Amy’s choice), I’m not keen on much of series 6 but I do like the opening two parter. I agree completely with you on series 7 and 8 (I do consider kill the moon to be the weakest of series 8). I loved series 9 except from the two parter with ashilder and i consider that under the lake – before the flood was the best episodes of the series.
@arbutus Yes the seeds of doom is a firm favourite of mine as is most of the early tom baker episodes.
I shall post a list of my favourites very shortly.
3 February 2016 at 19:25 #50807@kharis I think the E-Space trilogy is great as well really enjoyed the last story Warriors’Gate and yes it’s great that everyone likes different episodes it makes conversations like this interesting.
I personally am biased towards Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker as I think there my favourite doctors!
Doctor who is so special in that it can be so different every week so every episode can have its own fans.

Not sure if anyone here has heard of it but it is basically about a doctor who fan who decides to watch every doctor who episode from the beginning and he gets his not fan wife to join him. It’s very funny and I highly recommend it to any fans but if you’re not to familiar with BG episodes it might not be your thing.

If we’re talking favourite Peter capaldi episodes I have to go for Under the Lake/Before the Flood or Heaven Sent. Matt Smith is a hard one to choose but I would go for Day of the Doctor or impossible astronaut/day of the moon. David Tennant has to be Human nature/family of blood or Waters of Mars. I can’t narrow down the BG episodes because there are just so many great ones.
I agree that most of PC episodes are very good and I do like the empty child episode as well.
Oh and you can never have too long a list!

I’m just curious to see whether the well regarded stories are well loved here (Genesis and Blink) or if some of you like some other stories that not so many people like. I personally like The Power of the Daleks the best but then it really is so hard to choose a favourite. If you can’t choose a favourite just say a few that you enjoy rewatching.
1 February 2016 at 18:08 #5076542 was one of the first episodes I saw and I remember feeling very uneasy when the doctor became the monster. After rewatching it I definitely think it’s one of the better series 3 stories and probably chibnall’s finest story for doctor who. For me series 3 was quite a strong season overall and this was one of the highlights.

1 February 2016 at 10:57 #50757Yes I agree with you on destiny of the Daleks even though I have a soft spot for it I can see its faults. Yes I have watched a lot of his earlier seasons and my personal favourites have to be seeds of doom, talons of weng-chiang, terror of the zygons, genesis, deadly assassin but to be fair I love almost all of the early tom baker stories.
You mentioned ark in space and I’m afraid I never really liked it although the sets were simply amazing, I haven’t seen masque of mandragora yet but will let you know my thoughts once I’ve seen it.

1 February 2016 at 10:37 #50750My first memory of Doctor who was of the cyber controller falling of the zeplin and into a great explosion, my dad tried to change the channel but I wouldn’t let him. He said that Doctor who had been on since he was a child and this amazed me. Unfortunately I forgot about it until I happened to spot a dalek on the cover of a dvd. After watching doomsday about a hundred times I decided to never miss an episode and so started watching At series 3.
During my time watching series 3 I also bought some classic episodes and was pleased to say that I loved Destiny of the Daleks. So if I had not been impressed with destiny I would probably have never bothered with the classic stuff and now I prefer watching the old episodes thanks to poor old Destiny of the Daleks. Does anyone else have a soft spot for Destiny ?

So I suppose I got into Dr Who from the start of the revival but I don’t remember much about series 1 and I believe I got hooked when I bought the series 2 finale on dvd. Since then I have watched all the new series stuff but I’m willing to admit that I’m much more in tune to the classic series. I look forward to joining in with you all on this wonderful forum.
