    Oops. Double post

    (you can tell I haven’t been on in a while, my posting skills are a bit rusty!)

    Hello everyone, been gone a while but just popping in.

    On the subject of b/w Pertwee stories I know that there is no colour copy of Invasion of the Dinosaurs episode 1 and so they have released the DVD with both the b/w and a restored colour version of episode 1. Personally I would go for the b/w version as it suits the tone of the episode perfectly.

    Also The Mind of Evil was released on DVD in colour though there are no surviving colour tapes but some wizards have recreated the colour for us to enjoy. I always just assumed it was a b/w story but didn’t realise until last year that some Pertwee colour tapes had been junked along with lots of Hartnell and Troughton episodes.

    That’s all I know about the state of the Pertwee missing tapes but I’m sure there’s more detailed analysis somewhere else on the internet. Sorry if I’m just repeating what’s already been said but I haven’t been on in a while!

    Well I’ve just pre-ordered The Power of the Daleks Animation on DVD, I haven’t been this excited for ages!  Hopefully if this gets enough sales then they will animate more missing episodes.

    Here’s the link to anyone interested in buying (beware though, only available in region 2) Enjoy!

    @thethirteenthgamer

    I wouldn’t get your hopes up, this story has been told elsewhere on the Internet and was proved to be a load of rubbish (as everyone expected I’m sure), the guy who made it up even admitted that it was a wind-up. Still we can but dream…

    #53803

    @theconsultingdoctor

    Hello sounds like a big task, writing can be so hard sometimes and I’m not the best at it! I’ll try help but could you perhaps give us some more details on the characters and the world you’ve created to give us an idea of what kind of story you’re trying to create, just vague sketchy outlines of the characters would be fine.

    I’m just going to sleep now but I’ll think it over once you’ve given us some outlines, I might not be able to get back to you soon though as my posting has been few and far between lately!

    You could tell us some of the other plots you’ve discarded and perhaps we could just offer slight improvements or a few more ideas to your plot, good luck with it anyway! I’m sure there’s lots of more talented writers here than myself that will be willing to help.

    #53731

    @theconsultingdoctor

    Don’t worry if I ever do happen to go back and get them I wouldn’t keep them for myself, I promise!

    @janetteb

    Sounds good, perhaps I’d visit the Egyptians and see the pyramids being built or go back to those foggy London streets of the Victorian era!

    #53726

    @missy

    I too would visit the past first and then go out to space and see all those wonderful planets out there. I’m a bit fearful of the future so would probably avoid it anyway if I go back in time I could save all the missing Doctor Who episodes that were wiped!

    #53670

    @ichabod

    I can back you up on this one, River was depressing but very good in my opinion. Skargard was excellent.

    #53635

    @pedant

    I had heard of the 2012 remake but I thought I’d prefer the original. I might get it once I’ve finished the original, not sure. Good to hear that you regard it highly.

    #53615

    I just bought the 1970s BBC series “Survivors” by Terry Nation (a name familiar with all Doctor Who fans I’m sure) and was just wandering if anyone had heard of it, I’ve only watched the first episode and thought I’d ask if anyone had seen it before and did you enjoy it?

    Also, @mudlark @janetteb I’m a bit late but I thought I’d tell you that I’ve started watching The Living and The Dead and I’ve reached episode 3. It’s very good so far, could be scarier but that’s not a big complaint and I think episode 3 has been the best so far, which means it’s getting even better! I’m taking a long time to watch it though because of all the other stuff I’m watching right now but I might just finish it by 2025!

    #53614

    @puroandson I’m sad to hear that you’ll be taking a break, it’s your consistent posting which really keeps this place alive, anyway enjoy a little holiday from the forum (as I’ve been recently) and I hope we’ll have some Doctor Who news to discuss soon.

    @janetteb re-watching BG who sounds good! I’ve just recently made my brother and my dad watch Horror of Fang Rock with me, they say that they’re enjoying it so far (only half way through) but my dad preferred The Mind Robber which I also showed them, I’m desperately trying to convert them into Doctor Who fans!

    Anyway keeping on topic, Leela is a very good companion and in my opinion very funny, though apparently Tom Baker didn’t like her at all until after Fang Rock (her fourth story!) and nowadays doing Big Finish together they’re very good friends! There’s a fun fact for you!

    #53551

    @janetteb That’s a great story sounds very funny! I also thought that Trap Street felt very Harry Potter, it reminded me of that alley (can’t remember the name) which I think was Harry Potter’s first experience of the “magic world”, my knowledge of Harry Potter is a bit rusty!

    #53550

    @stitchintime That’s true I never thought that the Doctor could lie to the veil but now you’ve brought it up it seems like a good explanation.

    @pingpongpete1 Don’t worry I’m not fed up I’m still genuinely interested to see the photos such a pity it’s so complicated. Why not try adding them on to a post of yours on here, there’s a button that says img above the box you write you’re posts in, that could possibly work?

    #53529

    @pingpongpete1 Hello again, I tried the link and it worked and led me to a page called bbc costumes…who but it said that the folder was empty? Not sure what’s going on, should I make an account in case that’s the problem?

    #53524

    @pingpongpete1 I did some looking around and found that a man named David Harrison was in two Doctor Who stories, his first was called Castrovalva (with Peter Davison as the Doctor) in which he played an uncredited warrior and his second was as an uncredited extra in Remembrance of the Daleks (with Sylvester McCoy’s Doctor). I also found a Terry Russelton who played an uncredited extra (a marine possibly) in another McCoy story The Curse of Fenric. I couldn’t find any Pat Mullins and I couldn’t get on to see your photos, could you perhaps put them on here?

    @missrori Thanks for the info on Invasion of Time and I have to say that the mystery behind Doctor Who is extremely important and is something that should never be chipped away at, it’s great that after more than 50 years we still don’t know all there is to know about this character. The problem I had with series 9’s hybrid arc was that it changed the reason why the Doctor left Gallifrey which I thought was one of the best and funniest reasons he could have for leaving his home planet, he was simply bored, that should never have changed but I’ve gotten over it. The new adventures novels you mentioned are quite interesting especially Lungbarrow which I still haven’t got a copy of.

    #53500

    @puroandson

    Glad to hear your feeling better and back home, it was all down to the lollies!

    #53499

    @trillianwho

    I always held the belief that all people born on Gallifrey were known as Gallifreyans and once you get through the academy you become a Time Lord/Time Lady as you said above.

    There is a fourth doctor story called the Invasion of Time (I haven’t watched it in a while so my memory may be a bit rusty!) which is set on Gallifrey where you see outside of the citadel people living in pretty bad conditions far from the idea of how time lords live and I can’t quite remember what they called the people outside of the citadel but I am pretty sure they weren’t called Time Lords but they were from Gallifrey perhaps they were Gallifreyans?

    I agree with all that you say about regeneration and the matrix though in the first post regeneration story the new doctor (Patrick Troughton 2nd) said his renewal was part of the TARDIS, so perhaps it has something to do with time or the time vortex?

    I’m not sure but I think you’re maybe right that regeneration isn’t a genetic thing and is something controlled instead anyway it’s good to hear your thoughts!

    #53472

    I was just watching the happiness patrol from McCoy’s time in the TARDIS, it’s a fantastic story with the funniest monster in the whole series in the form of the Kandyman! The actor who’s playing him is just brilliant and the moment when he answers the phone is just hilarious! Anyone else seen this story?

    #53471

    @puroandson I’m very sorry to hear your mother is unwell but I wish her a happy birthday and a speedy recovery as we all do here, in the mean time how about treating her with some jelly babies!

    @ichabod I hope you’ll make a full recovery soon as well, and I’m sure the itching will die down shortly.

    @trillianwho Hello, I hope you enjoy it here and I must say your post on the memories thread was very good. Companions nowadays are a lot more fleshed out as you say and I can’t really think of any from the classic series that have such detailed backgrounds and lives, Ace was a companion who had a lot of attention and character development though so if you were going to be interested in checking out classic series companions I’d suggest her, my favourite is Jamie from the second doctor era but I love Donna from the new series!

    #53210

    @missy

    Green and red always remind me of Christmas, my favourite colour would be either yellow or blue.

    #53209

    @puroandson

    I don’t think I could join you in the arts and arty chapter (I’m quite bad to put it mildly!)

    On the DC vs Marvel thing, I’m not into superheroes that much but if I had to pick I’d be picking DC, mainly for Batman!

    #53208

    @dalektor

    The Evil of the Daleks is definitely in my top five possibly even in my top three, it’s a fantastic story and one that was originally intended to kill off the Daleks forever (mad I know!)

    The three human Daleks are actually I find quite creepy and Maxtible is one of my favourite characters from classic who. The one thing I don’t like about the story is Victoria Waterfield, I do like the companion a lot but here she just seemed so hysterical (which is understanding when being held captive but it just got on my nerves!)

    In the story we get to see Troughton’s darker side of the Doctor which can be seen in other stories as well, he can be quite manipulative which is interesting and gives his character even more depth, it also reminds me of how McCoy would play his Doctor.

    The final battle at the end feels epic even if we can’t see most of it, the story definitely feels like a finale to a great season.

    If I could have any missing story back it would be Power followed by this one, have you seen The Power of the Daleks? If not I highly recommend it!

    #53198

    I got cerulean and I don’t mind the colour blue, I disagree with the quiet life on Gallifrey though, who’d want to live there when you’ve got a bloody TARDIS!!!!

    #53197

    @1997whovian

    My favourite companion is Jamie from the second Doctor era because of the incredible chemistry he had with Troughton, he was also quite a funny character from an interesting background (highlands of Scotland during the battle of Culloden)

    If we’re talking about the new series then I think Rory or Donna, not sure?

    I’m just going to pop off and do those quizzes, back soon!

    #53160

    @1997whovian

    Have you got any ideas of which classic episode you will watch first if not I’m sure all of us here can help with plenty of suggestions!

    Smith and Capaldi are both excellent (well isn’t every Doctor!) Capaldi has bee my favourite of the new series so far. I thought I would miss Smith to much so I wouldn’t be able to like Capaldi at first but I was wrong and I loved his Doctor immediately!

    Dinosaurs on a Spaceship is a very fun episode and Smith is particularly funny in that episode I seem to remember.

    #53158

    @1997whovian

    Hello, nice to see another new face, my favourite Doctor (as you can probably tell by the profile pic) is the second doctor Sir Patrick of Troughton (he’s an absolute genius) and my favourite episode is The Power of the Daleks though a number of episodes come close!

    What are your favourites?

    Have you seen any of Troughton’s episodes?

    Hope you enjoy it here!

    #53091

    @mudlark @janetteb

    I’m away just now so I had to record the series (I’ll let you know what I think of it once I’ve watched it though it might be quite sometime before I watch it all)

    I’ve been looking forward to it as it seems like just the sort of programme I love, just hoping that Mark Gatiss will revive A Ghost Story For Christmas again soon.

    #53090

    @janetteb

    I did indeed watch We’re Doomed and thoroughly enjoyed it! I do remember noting at the time the similarities between it and An Adventure in Space and Time though I think I enjoyed the latter more.

    I highly recommend the film and I believe you won’t find it a disappointment but it isn’t as good as the old TV series.

    #53033

    I haven’t watched the TV Movie for years, I’ve just got to many bad memories of it, but maybe I should give it another another chance I don’t think PM was particularly bad but the movie as whole was not for me.

    I would love to see more of PM perhaps a spinoff with his Doctor would have been wiser than “Class” (which I’m not looking forward to)

    For an idea of what BG episode to watch next I would say The Evil of the Daleks or Inferno

    #53021

    @stitchintime

    On this forum it means “Before Gap” which means episodes before the show was cancelled. So basically any classic series stuff, new series episodes are known as AG episodes “After Gap”

    This makes me think though, seen as there were two gaps 1989-1996 and 1996-2005 what does the Paul McGann movie classify as BG or AG, I would say BG but depends on which gap we’re talking about!

    #53018

    Although episode 1 of this fantastic story (a possible contender for my favourite of all time?) is the more widely discussed and talked about I think this single episode is my favourite of all time! It’s in contention with part 3 of this story and any of the 6 episodes of Power of the Daleks.

    The thing I love about this episode and this story is the atmosphere, the mystery and the fantastic surrealism. To add to that I’ve got my favourite Doctor and favourite companion (Jamie) to watch, and both of them are on top form. The scene with the children is especially creepy and I find it just wonderful to watch all the different puzzles that the Doctor has to solve. The new Jamie should be disturbing but I find that he just sort of eases his way in to the role effortlessly and I don’t actually mind him, still rather Frazer of course!

    All in all I think this is a fantastic example of classic Doctor Who and a brilliant example of sixties TV, definitely give it a shot anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, it’ll be worth it!

    #53017

    Hello I was just wondering whether there will be another rewatching of a BG episode soon (we could have a vote for which one!) as I see there hasn’t been one for a while and I feel that we all need something to talk about whilst there aren’t any new episodes coming soon, if there’s a reason why there hasn’t been a rewatch for some time don’t worry I fully understand and am not hurrying anyone! Just thought it would be nice to start rewatching old episodes again!

    #52921

    So I’ve just watched the new Dad’s Army film and despite my worries it actually wasn’t half bad! I really enjoyed most of it and found that the majority of the cast were up to scratch (still can’t compare with the originals!). It was an entertaining plot that I could definitely see happening in the old series (apart from the major action sequences) and there was plenty of opportunities for a good laugh. The best actors were Gambon as Godfrey (excellent portrayal), Toby Jones as Mainwaring (again brilliant) and Daniel Mays as Walker (great as well). Fraser played by Bill Paterson was good but I felt he needed more screen time as he was probably the least involved of the characters, Pike as well was good but not excellent. This is all just my opinion so what do you guys think?

    Now onto the bad stuff, although I said it was entertaining it didn’t have as many jokes or one-liners as I thought there would be and at times it could go up to five minutes without any actual effort at comedy, I really liked the cast but thought that Tom Courtenay as Jones was not very good, Jones is a larger than life character and I thought he played it to quiet and didn’t get the mannerisms spot on, Bill Nighy didn’t impress me either as Wilson but I can’t quite put my finger on why?

    I did think overall that it was good enough to deserve another go at, I would love another Dad’s Army movie, the characters are just too good to leave alone! Anyone else see it?

    #52877

    Well it seems as though there’s going to be another Scottish Independence Referendum and this time I’m going to be eligible to vote!

    I’m not sure what Northern Ireland are doing seen as there was a majority vote to remain, maybe action will be taken there?

    #52829

    Here we go this is the first song I can ever remember being stuck in my head permanently and I still love it! I’m sure you’ve all heard it many times before. Enjoy!

    Here’s another song I heard not long ago and personally I just think it’s bewildering! No idea if anyone’s into this kind of stuff, I’m not anyway but thought it was interesting so I’ll share it with all of youHere you go…

    #52823

    @arbutus @whisht @puroandson

    @puroandson I will look forward to your birthday, please remind me when it does reach your birthday (I’m rubbish at remembering dates!) and what else could you want for your birthday when you have all of us giving you songs!

    @whisht Even if you deny it I would still pick you on my quiz team, I bet you’d be good at the music questions, I’m hopeless at them!

    @arbutus Thank you for the song, I listened to it and I’m pleased to say that I enjoyed it (Loved the ukulele!). I’ll try and post a song but I’m not sure how too… Ah I’ve just worked it out but YouTube isn’t working at the moment so I’ll try and post again tomorrow once I can get on to YouTube. You’re husband sounds like Sherlock, that’s some talent he has! You and your husband can join the quiz team as well, oh and so can @puroandson

    I shall try and post something tomorrow, Promise!

    #52817

    @blenkinsopthebrave

    Ah yes Rita! It took me a while to think of who the character was but now I remember, I haven’t watched the god complex for a couple of years now but I do know who you’re talking about. I suppose they wouldn’t have really needed her as you said because of the strengths for chemistry between the main characters at the time but if she were to become a companion I think it could’ve worked. Good choice!

    I also remembered Richard Mace from Peter Davison’s The Visitation, a brilliant character and actor. If he were to join I could imagine him being similar to Jamie but with added charm!

    #52813

    I was watching Tom Baker’s City of Death the other day, again (it was very good) and I couldn’t help feeling sad when they left Duggan behind in Paris, he would’ve made an excellent companion!

    It got me thinking about other characters who would have made good companions, of the top of my head I think frank Skinner would’ve made a good partnership with Capaldi, the scientist from the episode Kinda would have been a better companion than Tegan or Nyssa for the fifth doctor and there’s the character from The Faceless Ones played by Pauline Collins who would have been great with Jamie and the Second Doctor!

    Anyone have any other suggestions for companions that could have been!

    #52812

    @puroandson

    I’ve never really had a taste in music which is a shame I just know that I don’t like much of that pop nonsense nowadays (doesn’t mean I don’t like change!) especially the bloody beaver (good name). I suppose I like old rock songs and yeah guitars are probably my favourite instrument. Most songs I hear now though are electronic which I’m not a fan off!

    Freddie Mercury/Queen is what I was listening to a few months ago, now I’ve got stayin’ alive by the beegees stuck in my head along with mr blue sky (heard it on some tv programme yesterday)

    I don’t think I’m clever enough to venture onto the music thread either, gotta respect those with encyclopaedic knowledge e.g. @whisht & @arbutus

    #52798

    @puroandson

    I was referring to 80s Doctor Who mainly and yeah I think the 80s were great as well! Better than bloody beaver anyway!

    May I compliment you on your great knowledge of music, especially for people our age you have very impressive music knowledge, do you happen to play anything?

    I’m not blessed with musical talent myself and possess next to no knowledge on the subject! I was actually quite pleased with myself being able to recognise most of the names you mentioned above!

    Perhaps we should move the conversation again to the music thread now!

    #52794

    @puroandson

    Oi! The 80’s weren’t that bad!
    They were just bad most of the time!

    #52719

    I’ve never really been a big fan of the Paternoster gang, Strax I find particularly irritating especially because he is a sonataren and Using a sonataren as light comic relief really annoys me! Honestly the sonatarens are meant to be a warrior race of clones but now children just think they’re comedy butlers with a liking for scissor grenades!

    Matt Lucas returning should be interesting and I suspect that would mean a lighter tone for series ten which I wasn’t hoping for but I don’t mind!

    I personally wouldn’t like a female doctor and I know for sure that sylvester McCoy and Peter Davison don’t want one either (I wander what the rest think?) I don’t have any solid reasons but I just know that I wouldn’t want one. Missy on the other hand is great but I just feel as though it would have been better if she had just been another evil timelord and not the master, but I don’t mind considering how good she is, maybe the same would happen if a female doctor was cast and was played brilliantly? I still wouldn’t like to take that chance though!

    #52691

    @danh19

    Hello! Nice to see some new members around these parts. My story is pretty much the same as yours, I first got a glimpse of doctor who when watching the last five minutes of The Age of Steel after that I saw the series 2 finale on DVD at Woolworth’s and my dad was saying that he remembered the Daleks back when he was a child so I asked if I could get it and the first episode I ever fully saw was… Fear Her! Then I started watching properly when series 3 started, I absolutely loved it!

    Although Tennant isn’t my favourite he is the first doctor I ever watched and I think he’s great!

    What’s your favourite classic and new series episodes?

    #52649

    @pharellman @puroandson

    I started watching Doctor Who at the start of series 3 (I had seen the series 2 finale though) and I actually can’t remember what I thought of this episode at the time. I remember the dalek episodes because Daleks were the coolest things on the planet and I remember being very scared of both The Lazarus Experiment and Blink (of course, I still am a bit!) anyway when I finally rewatched this story, a couple of years ago now, I really enjoyed it! It’s probably one of the best episodes of series 3 and it has the surprise return of the Macra! The speech by Tennant that @puroandson mentioned is very good and the death of the face of boe is actually quite touching but the rest of the episode is fun as well!

    About this RTD vs Moff thing I don’t really have a side, though I think Moffat probably writes the better standalone episodes such as listen, blink and his many others. They were both good at running the show and did make a big success of it! I don’t really like RTD’s romantic storylines about the doctor and rose but that’s just personal taste. I hope that chibnall can follow up the high standard that the last two series have set!

    #52380

    @missy

    Yes it’s a shame he invested so much in the role of Sherlock that it did kill him, but it was a very good performance and one he would be proud of!

    @puroandson

    It’s great to see so many people watching and reading the works of M R James, I thought I was the only person in the world who was even slightly interested in his ghost stories!

    A Warning to the curious is probably my second favourite ghost story of his and I suggest that you try and find an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ The Signalman! It’s very good and made even better by the fact that Dickens was himself frightened of trains due to an experience he had on one before he wrote Signalman, a train crash almost killed him!

    #52379

    Hello @puroandson

    I think there may have been a case of mistaken identity! Were you meaning @thedentistofdavros or @theconsultingdoctor when you replied to my post about the lack of teaching on the jobs front, if so then I’m glad to hear that your school does so much to inform it’s pupils of life after school, our school does the bare minimum when it comes to teaching us about what to do when it’s time to leave.

    I am a pupil and not a teacher but I think I’ll take that as a compliment! Thank you for your kind words!

    @theconsultingdoctor Good luck with your book, I wish I could have a dedicated English teacher but it’s seems my teacher lost her passion for English a long time ago! You’re very well spoken too and I can tell that you’d make a good writer and teacher!

    #52360

    @missy

    I have not seen it! Might check it out now though!

    Jeremy Brett was the actor who played Sherlock Holmes for a long time wasn’t he? Or am I thinking of someone else?

    Thanks for the recommendation though!

    Crooked house is well worth the money!

    #52359

    @puroandson

    Thank goodness you re-wrote that whole post! Very good points and an interesting discussion! Well written

    I’m very impressed that all of us on this forum could have had this discussion without it descending into madness, as is the case on many other places on the Internet!

    On the subject of Schools and the pressure on students to achieve more, I can say that being in school right now it does feel that way. Exams have been getting harder and harder, getting into uni has been getting harder and harder, and teachers pressuring pupils to get into uni is getting more frequent. It is stressful and it doesn’t help when you’re given the inpression that anyone who doesn’t go to university will end up with a rubbish job (which is certainly not the case!).

    What I would criticise most though is the lack of educating pupils about job applications and career paths on a whole! Honestly the lack of education about these essential topics confuses me! Instead they are determined to teach us about the misuse of alcohol and drugs (on a yearly basis!). Schools need to start letting their pupils know that not getting into uni isn’t the end of the world instead of giving pupils the opposite inpression that it is the end of the world! Of course we want university courses but we need to know what else is an option if not achievable!
