I have the crooked house on DVD! Isn’t it great! Up ther with some of M R James work (almost!)
Someone may have mentioned this elsewhere on the forum but have you seen Remember Me starring Michael Palin that’s another good ghost story and relatively new I think!
The M R James ghost stories I own on DVD are two versions of Whistle and I’ll come to you, The Stalls of Barchester, A Warning to the Curious, The Treasure of Abbot-Thomas, The Ash Tree, Lost Hearts, A View from a Hill, Number 13 and the tractate middoth. I also have three other Ghost stories for Christmas including Stigma, The Signalman and The Ice House!
I’d look out for any of these as they’re all very good! The Ice House and Stigma are probably my least favourite but that’s just my opinion!
I really hope Mark Gatiss decides to do more of these kind of programmes as they really are very enjoyable!

It’s not that I don’t like Happy Valley it’s just that I happened to miss it first time round! If it’s very good maybe I should look into it!

8 May 2016 at 20:33 #52214You speak words of wisdom! I would love to see at least one pure historical episode per series! I loved the sixties historicals The Gunfighters is an especially good one in my opinion!
This episode may not be very comic but in my opinion you need episodes like this as I think Doctor Who works very well with a more serious tone, not to say I don’t enjoy the more funnier episodes! If you want a good mix of historical and comedy then I suggest The Romans as a great example of a light-hearted romp from the early days of the programme!
On a different note I think sixties who is probably my favourite era of the show

I still enjoyed it as for Happy Valley I’ve never even attempted watching it (probably because I missed the start of series 1) but I’ve heard many good things about though perhaps not for others!
I also have recently watched Line of Duty (police dramas of this kind usually aren’t my thing) but I found it gripping and very good! Did you see that? It was quite dark in places though.

In Patrick Troughton’s Fury from the Deep the Sonic screwdriver was used for the first ever time to unscrew some screws! Not sure if it’s been used like that again?

I’m sure that there’s lots of other readings and teleplays of this story out there but this is definitely one of the best! It has been quite heavily adapted but is still great! There is a 1960s teleplay as well that I have seen which is quite good and you can buy that with the new John Hurt version if you buy a box set called A Ghost Story for Christmas by BFI

Silver Blaze was definitely one of the best stories from the memoirs collection along with the crooked man and the final problem for me!
As for ACD’s best short stories it has to go to almost anything from The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The six napoleons is brilliant for me!
I watched the abominable bride with my family and they all thought it was to confusing and not very good whereas I thought it was suitably scary,clever and fun! So yes I agree that I don’t get where all the bad reviews are coming from, it may not be my favourite Sherlock episode but then that doesn’t mean it isn’t brilliant!

I too thought that the storylines and episodes were better in series 9 than they were in series 8! But I just thought the different dynamic between him and Clara was more interesting in series 8! Of course I still loved his portrayal in series 9 but just thought it was more unpredictable in his first series!

I think we may all have noticed a slight change from Peter Capaldi’s portrayal of the doctor between his debut series and series 9. Just thought we could have a discussion on whether or not you like the more funnier and light-hearted doctor from series 9 or if you preferred the darker and more serious version in series 8! They are still undeniably the same Doctor of course, but I did notice the change and wondered if anyone didn’t like it or embraced it.
I personally thought that Peter’s doctor over both series has been brilliant but I tend to lean towards the more serious portrayal in series 8, I just thought it was wonderful to have a change after following on from Matt and David (who weren’t to similar themselves but were still probably very jokey in the same way) and was glad to have a more stricter presence in the TARDIS!
What do you all think?

I understand some people find this very useful but I don’t think it would hurt to much if you disabled it for a wee bit. Just my opinion but it’s really up to you!

It is a good story and well worth a rewatch (remembrance of the Daleks)
I haven’t taken big finish into account but I’m sure someone else could advise us if there’s anything to add!
27 April 2016 at 07:09 #51933Lost Hearts did probably have the most striking imagery in the whole series of the two children with there hearts pumping in there chests and it all being visible to us!
Mark Gatiss I think did a great job of reviving the series and I hope he does more which I think he will if he gets the time because I know that he’s a big fan of James’s writings!
I’ve definitely heard of Doomwatch but I haven’t seen any of it, I may investigate soon!
25 April 2016 at 07:20 #51888Oh yes the new series Daleks are definitely little angry blobs because in the classic series there was a civil war between renegade Daleks vs Davros and the Imperial Daleks which ended up wiping out all the Daleks after that Davros must have reinvented them (or something!)
24 April 2016 at 22:15 #51874The Treasure of Abbot Thomas is one of the best I’ve seen and read of his and to go with your CD collection I strongly recommend you find the BFI release called A Ghost Story For Christmas which was an annual series of ghost stories adapted for television by the BBC (also includes The Signalman by Charles Dickens!) they really are very good!

I believe the Daleks became robotic due to the Doctor’s meddling in Genesis of the Daleks which had an impact on the timeline of the Daleks (I think it was never stated on screen though)
23 April 2016 at 20:26 #51833The Dalek Invasion of Earth was one of the first William Hartnell stories I saw though i can’t remember for sure?
If there was a competition for the most iconic episodes of dr who of all time this one has to be up there, there’s just so many great moments from the dalek in the Thames to Westminster bridge and then topped of by that magical speech from Hartnell at the end, very special!
It has some faults for me and isn’t the best dalek story but I do love it very much!
I highly recommend it! Along with the first dalek story for some examples of early dalek stories (not that there’s many left thanks to the junking policies of the BBC back in the day)

I was talking about my classic doctor who collection but I have also been getting some other classic tv series such as Patrick McGoohan’s The Prisoner which I haven’t finished watching yet as well as the bbc’s classic adaptations of M R James’ Ghost Stories! Also watched a few old universal monster movies recently such as Dracula and Frankenstein.
What have you got as I realise these at pretty obscure and not many people would have known of the ghost stories for example?

I’m not so keen on the regular modern day companion as it has been done so often but I don’t mind of course! Early signs are that she’s going to be very different to Clara and maybe not to far from Donna Noble? Sounds good to me anyway! Can’t wait now for next series!
Anyone seen Pearl Mackie in anything else then? I myself can’t say that I have so was just wandering if she’s a well known actress or not?
P.S the jacket reminded me of Ace for any classic series watchers though I have to see it again to be sure!
22 April 2016 at 07:17 #51771I know I really should get the box set but for the past few years I’ve been trying to complete my classic series collection (not many left to get) and I’ve actually been neglecting the new series box sets in fact the last one I got was series 6 but I have recorded series 7 and bought the Day of the Doctor (obviously). What puts me off buying them straight away is that for the price of one box set I could probably get quite a few classic DVDs! I might wait until the price comes down or get it for Christas! Who knows but I know that I have to get series 8 and 9 because they are just great!

Series 9 is definitely high up on my list (new series only that is!) though I’m not sure it can beat Series 5 and is probably joint with Series 8 for me!
As for Hell Bent I’m sorry to say that I found it rather a disappointment following on from the perfect Heaven Sent but then I’ve rewatched Heaven Sent numerous times and am yet to rewatch Hell Bent so I could be surprised on a second rewatch and I keep hearing the amount of praise both episodes get on this forum so maybe I’m wrong about it and it’s time for me to give it a second chance! Who knows eh?
Anyway hope to hear more from you and any others who decide to join up!

I do agree with @kharis that Class doesn’t really appeal to me and that there could have been better options but I’m not going to not give it a chance and I shall wait and see if it surprises me as I have often been surprised by other programmes!I am still glad that they are at least trying to get more teens interested in the show and it also shows that the bbc are willing to try dr who spinoff shows and who knows if Class is a success then we may get another spinoff show (that may be wishful thinking!)

Hello the ones I can think off are Katarina and Sara Kingdom (first doctor companions). Adric (fifth doctor) and Kamelion (a robot and companion of fifth) all died on the classic series as far as I know!

6 April 2016 at 11:51 #51589That’s a surprisingly hard question! I suppose in a way you know he’s the doctor as he has to defeat some alien threat and that is generally what the doctor does. In other words he has to prove to everyone that he can be the doctor by defeating the monsters!
If you want to watch some episodes I recommend watching any of the doctors first episodes (Deep Breath, Eleventh Hour, The Power of the Daleks Ep1)
After the first ever regeneration from Hartnell to Troughton the show had to also convince the audience that this was the doctor so they put him up against his old enemies the Daleks who recognised him as the doctor so that’s how they dealt with it in 1966!

@blenkinsopthebrave Great choice and fantastic reason as well though I do have one question! Did you by any chance get to watch The Power of the Daleks? And if so what were your thoughts at the time as I imagine it must have been very confusing and possibly scary as well! In fact do you remember any missing episodes in particular?

For me it has to be between power of the Daleks and the mind robber though tomorrow it will probably be different! It’s such a shame that power is missing as its a great story and a very important one too! One day it might come back well here’s hoping anyway

Someone mentioned having the engineer as a companion I think it was @ichabod and I thought that’s a great idea as I really liked his character and really like Frank Skinner and I’m pretty sure if Skinner was offered it he’d take it as I heard when he got the call to star in Doctor Who he was in the middle of watching William Hartnell in the Sensorites so I’m pretty sure he’s a fan!
@stitchintime and @kharis I’m sorry to say that I’m one of those people who don’t like Adric (though I don’t loathe him!) it’s just that as an actor he just didn’t do it for me and I didn’t find him funny or particularly interesting either (sorry!)
@kharis There’s never a dull moment with Matt or most other Doctors to be honest! but Matt was just brilliant and a great comic actor as well as being good at handling the serious bits
@arbutus I’m glad to see that Romana is getting the praise she deserves!
29 March 2016 at 17:16 #51515Hello everyone I was just about to post but then read @janetteb ‘s post about the actors other work and thought that basically answers that question!
The only actor I can think off who definitely was ruined by the role of the doctor was William hartnell as he basically killed himself under the tough schedule and didn’t go on to do much else afterwards (I’m not sure if this was directly because of Doctor Who though). Jon Pertwee did Worzel Gummidge which is well known though that’s about it that I know off (he probably did lots of other stuff!)
I believe that being typecast was actually Patrick Troughton’s greatest fear (or so he said!)

@kharis The eleventh doctor is brilliant for bringing out the best in people even the guest characters he seems to have chemistry with everyone!

@ichabod I too watched remember me and thought it was very good and I am watching the league of gentleman on YouTube to pass the time! There’s always something you can find to pass the time!

Thanks for the responses (and for the story of the midges, I feel your pain!) I can’t believe that I forgot about the seventh and ace they were brilliant as for the original crew I thought it improved when Susan left and Vicki came aboard as well! Steven and Vicki were fun to watch as well if you watch the time meddler that’s really good fun!@winston Yes in the winter we do get a break from the midges but then have to put up with gale force winds!

Donna was brilliant though and I would have loved to see more of her (such a tragic ending!) and Sarah Jane is just great as for River to be honest I think she worked almost better with Capaldi than she did with Smith!
Scotland is great but you’d be hard pressed to find a day when it isn’t raining or the whole country isn’t infested with midges! Anyone who doesn’t know what a midge is then count yourself as lucky!

24 March 2016 at 17:25 #51431Hello everyone I was just think what Doctor-Companion pairing/group do you think had the best chemistry and which had the worst?
For me I think the second doctor and Jamie had the best chemistry and if you added Zoe into that then it just got better, I also liked the fourth doctor and both the Romanas especially when they were given great scripts to work off. The tenth doctor and Donna was also very amusing to watch as was the fourth with Leela.
As for the worst I would have to say the fifth doctor with Nyssa and Adric as I wasn’t keen on either of those companions and I always felt that they didn’t get on with each other (on screen) I also didn’t like Rose with the tenth doctor and I feel that she worked much better with Chris’s doctor, I wasn’t a fan of their romantic storyline either
What do you guys think?
24 March 2016 at 17:16 #51430@kbranagh @missy I would have loved Mark Gatiss as the next show runner as I’m a big fan of his work not just on Doctor Who but on his brilliant series the League of Gentlemen, his excellent adaptation of A ghost story for Christmas and of course of him and Moffatt’s great Sherlock series. He is an incredibly imaginative writer and that was one of the main positives of Sleep No More as it was very creative. His other episodes have also been on the whole very good (don’t mention Victory of the daleks!) I especially liked Cold war, The Crimson Horror and the Unquiet Dead they were all great stories!
I’m sure Chibnall will be good (at least I’m hoping so!) but I would have loved to see Gatiss get a chance to run Doctor who

As well as feeling guilty and lonely I also felt that he had a duty to help others (As a way of redeeming himself) if you watch The Unquiet Dead (series 1) the alien gelth lost their original form (or something!) due to the time war and the Doctor was determined to help them as a way of repaying them for what the war did to them. Also I think in cases it went to his head and he became a bit power mad if you watch The Waters of Mars then you’ll see David Tennant breaking all the rules because he feels that he can and that he is the “time lord victorious” so he can decide what the rules of time are because he is the last of the time lords.
I think Christopher Ecclestone’s doctor had lost all his faith in the good of the universe until he met Rose who supposedly softened him (I read that somewhere) so you can gradually see the old doctor coming back as you watch.
Not sure if this helped or not as the Russel T Davies years are not my speciality and I haven’t watched many of his episodes for a while so I can’t remember any quotes but I hope I could be of assistance!
17 March 2016 at 07:38 #51391@missy I was referring to the series finale there but I too didn’t like the Ashilder two parter, for me it was the weakest story of the series but then again I am yet to rewatch sleep no more which I wasn’t keen on the first time I saw it!
Under the Lake-Before The Flood has to be the highlight of the series and I liked the second part of the dalek opener and Heaven Sent was sensational! The Zygon two parter was good and I enjoyed Face the Raven as well!

I keep forgetting about that I suppose you could say a game of three thirds. What surprised me this year was how each episode would go in an entirely different direction from the last! This I suppose made it more unpredictable which is a good thing! I find it very amusing when a doctor happens to have a certain quirk and it helps distinguish them (as a doctor)and set them apart from those who have gone before them. If I were the doctor I’d probably be whistling as it is one of my bad habits!(could become quite annoying after a while!)
@stitchintime Welcome, I hope you enjoy it here it is very nice and I think you were very lucky to tune in on The Deadly Assassin it’s an absolute classic!
