    Just read your post on metanarrative and the Eleventh Hour @bluesqueakpip and it made me think (see my riff under your post).

    The Doctor steps into his time-stream. Hurt Doctor stirs in his bubble universe. The walls are breaking down.

    The cracks in time are the work of the Doctor.

    @bluesqueakpip

    Petrichor is rain on dust; the smell of the rain after the drought

    Fair enough, but I was just being brief by using “dust” and wondering if there was some recent link back to that famous phrase. A bit tenuous.

    @timeloop

    Petrichor (to my knowledge) was not one of the better known words – at least before tDW. And the whole phrasing of that sentence still needs some context.

    @juniperfish

    The cracks in time are the work of the Doctor

    I would love this to be true – a 3+ season arc.

    Hurt Doc is in the Doc’s timestream – everywhere and everywhen the Doc has been / is going to be. Shouldn’t cracks be appearing all over if that was the case?

    But haven’t they been?  In Amelia’s bedroom, throughout that arc, in the Tardis when it was salvaged, probably other times…

    Re-watching the finale, and a couple of thoughts.

    I don’t know where I am!

    The line everyone said when they were uploaded into the wi fi in TBoSM was repeated by Clara at least twice in the Doctor’s timestream.  Has anyone thought about the possible significance of this?

    Now:  the leaf.  The Doctor gives it to her.  It contains “everything you were or will be”.  When last we saw the leaf, she gave it to the Grandfather God in TRoA. It contained “an infinity, all the days that never came”.

    Maybe he’s giving the leaf…     wait for it…                                       BACK to her?

    #10642
    brotherjohn @brotherjohn

    But back to the leaf.

    When Clara gives up the leaf in TRoA, right as she’s saying “days that should have been and never were…”, we see her mom’s grave, with the date of death being 5th March 2005.  As has been pointed out before, this was the date that Rose met Nine.

    More importantly, this is likely the day that Nine regenerated from Eight. (he comments about his new face the day after they meet)

    This leaf, which contains all of this past and infinite future relevance, to both the Doctor and Clara, which is given to the Grandfather God to satiate him, which is given (back?) to Clara to bring her back from what seems to be pending oblivion in the Doctor’s timeline… this leaf represents one moment, one day.

    This leaf’s significance, the past and all infinite futures it represents, pivots on one day in all of time.

    The day that Eight regenerates into Nine.

    Discuss.

    Re: Cracks. It’s a good point, but it only affected the pre-Big Bang universe. Does that then imply that the end of this 3-season arc will loop back to tEH at some point?

    Re: Leaf. That scene confused me a little bit, as the leaf the Doc gave to Clara looked like it had been destroyed in tRoA. If it’s not been destroyed, does that therefore mean that the leaf wasn’t ‘given’ to the grandfather? Or perhaps it was given to another grandfather (ie the Doc), or perhaps they are one and the same thing (somehow TBD). My brain began to hurt at this point and so I’ve put it down to some timey-wimeyness for now.

    There’s something odd about the whole leaf thing to me – it doesn’t sit quite right somehow – though I wonder if  it will become significant or if it is just a bit of Moffatyness. Similarly with the “Run you clever boy and remember (me)” line, which felt a bit forced.

    #10645
    WhoHar @whohar

    @brotherjohn,

    It is strongly implied that 9 had just regenerated in Rose, and that is the assumption that I made at the time.

    You can make a case though, that it wasn’t done on that actual day.

    From what we know of regens, the Doc tends to behave strangely for a while and there was none of that evident in Ecclestone’s take on it, when compared to his later performance.

    The question then presents: if it’s not Doc 9’s first day in a new face, why has he never seen it before? Possibly he was incapacitated (too ill) or maybe he was captive. It could be something as prosaic as him being too busy or not being near any reflective surfaces. That last option is particularly interesting given all the talk of mirrors and watery portals (copyright @juniperfish)

    #10646
    brotherjohn @brotherjohn

    @whohar – Oh, I think all cracks can be relevant.  So the universe re-booted!  Happens all the time.  Rory remembers, and Amy, and the Doctor.  It happened, the cracks were real, and cracks (by definition) cross universes.

    But that was really just a fleeting thought. I’m now hooked on the leaf’s significance.

    Rather, I don’t know that the leaf itself is significant as an object.  But what it represents certainly is.

    The past and the futures represented by this leaf  (now brought up in key plot moments twice) swing upon the very same date of The Doctor’s regeneration into Nine.  I don’t think that’s random, or Moffatt having us on.  I think it’s a surefire indicator that the regeneration between 8 and 9 will play a key role in the 50th.

    I was beginning to drift into the Pre-Hartnell camp.  But this brings me back home.  Hurt is either 8.5 or the real 9.

    #10649
    brotherjohn @brotherjohn

    @whohar

    Well, it’s really only the date of his regeneration if the writers make it so.  But it certainly fits.  The day after he meets Rose, he sees his face for the first time.  We must assume it was a VERY recent regen.  Only the writers can decide to make it definitively the day before, offscreen.  I think they did so — story going forward — by using that date as Clara’s mother’s death in this story arc.

    He could easily have gone a day, or part of a day, not having seen his face No mirrors in the Tardis?  He’s not that superficial?  He’s had a helluva day (a little Time War, the Hurt Doctor spinning off of him)?

    Sure, them making the date that of Clara’s mother’s death could be a red herring by Moffatt, or just an easter egg.

    But the fact that there has now been the same talk about what this leaf represents time-wise bookending Clara’s travel’s with the Doctor to date — it represents the past, and infinite possible futures — that makes it too significant for me.

    #10650
    WhoHar @whohar

    @brotherjohn

    So, it’s all about the leaf. :-). OK:

    From a completely non-story perspective, I don’t think Moffat would have the Hurt Doctor anywhere else except between 8 & 9, otherwise he makes a huge change to the original story that I think many fans would find unappealing. I’m in two minds about it personally but you can imagine the furore it would cause. This way (ie Hurt = Doc 8.5), he’s only affecting Doc’s 9, 10 & 11.

    The other option I guess is that the Hurt character isn’t literally the same as the Doc, either through some Moffatty wordplay or slight of hand, but that would seem like a ma-hoosive cheat. I think Hurt’s character will only be around for the 50th story and I’m just hoping that the way that is resolved actually has consequences, rather than being a reset.

    Oh, yeah, now about that leaf…

    D’oh! That’ll teach me to Google dialog rather than checking for myself 🙂

    I think most of my interpretations still make sense though.

    #10652
    WhoHar @whohar

    @brotherjohn.

    I think it may be a portent of Smith’s regeneration: Make like a tree and leave.

    (I’m in too much of a rush to even attempt to pick my coat up on the way out)

    #10653
    brotherjohn @brotherjohn

    @whohar – Yeah, you’re right.  There are probably many more compelling reasons he’s going to be 8.5 instead of something earlier.  Not nice to play with people’s religion. 🙂

    Plus, there’s always been this gap that addressing would bring some closure to for all fans.  There needs to be more connection between the old and the new.  And we never saw 8 regen to 9.  And the Time War is just sitting there in a big black box.  This could address all of that quite nicely.

    But… the leaf!  the leaf! (channelling Woody Allen in Love and Death — “The wheat!  the wheat!”)

    Don’t know that the leaf needs to be anything in particular… Moffatt could just make something up as a plot device.  It’s really the date, so tied to both 8–>9 and Clara (who we now know has played a kind of important role in the Doctor’s life… maybe even caused whatever happened with 8.5 to happen?).

    #10654
    WhoHar @whohar

    @brotherjohn

    He could easily have gone a day, or part of a day, not having seen his face No mirrors in the Tardis?  He’s not that superficial?

    Yet he changed his clothes.

    I’m playing Devil’s advocate a little here – I too think Doc 9 had just regenerated and as a nice tie-in to a meta-reference you may well be correct. I remain unconvinced but open to argument. As I said before, there’s something about that leaf that’s odd.

    #10655
    brotherjohn @brotherjohn

    Now, I need to make like a tree and leave… my brain is hurting again.  Time for sleep.

    Tomorrow morning, I will probably drop this leaf nonsense and lie firmly in the “Hurt Doctor is Clara’s Father” camp… or something.

    Petrichor is rain on dust; the smell of the rain after the drought

    Ahem, in the little book ‘Summer Falls’ it essentially says that petrichor is the smell the Tardis leaves when it dematerializes.  The word petrichor is not used but the wording above is.

    janetteB @janetteb

    @bluesqueakpip I think your remark (10510 pg 16, yes I am that far behind!!) re’ the arc not being about what hte Doctor’s name is but what is done under that name, is spot on. Because the name itself isn’t what matters, but what that name means and that has been a theme of Moffat’s tenure. We have been told that the name means different things to different people.

    cheers

    Janette. (now back to page 16)

    SatsumaJoe @satsumajoe

    Aren’t there two leaves?

    #10661
    ScaryB @scaryb

    Wow, it does move faast in here! 🙂

    Yes, the leaf.  Agree with @brotherjohn, it’s an enigma. It’s the thing that Clara “blew into the world on” (she also being a thing of infinite possibilities).  We’re told (in BoSJ) that it’s page 1.  And then its appearance in RoA, when it looked strangely different from how it looks in BoSJ and NotD. And yes it did look as if it got munched then, although several people have pointed out that there was an effect around it that looked like regeneration energy.

    Instead of the Dr getting it when he was posing as “grandfather” theory (which seems a bit on the outrageous side even for Moffat!), how about Clara first gets the leaf from the Dr in the timestream – that would certainly imbue it with lots of timey potential?  Hmmm, I can see a few problems with that one, not least that that would mean RoA would have to happen after. And it doesn’t explain how he gets it, as Clara hasn’t been carrying her big book recently. Oh well, back to drawing board.

    #10663
    ScaryB @scaryb

    @satsumajoe Haha – 2 leaves – now that is a blindingly simple solution which explains (almost but not quite) everything 🙂

    #10668
    SatsumaJoe @satsumajoe

    Well, the first leaf we saw was that which smacked her dad in the face. That’s the one the Doctor was shown investigating; who’s to say he didn’t take it around that time? The second leaf, the one eaten by Grandfather, could have been kept by Clara in memory of her mother. Not shown until then and fits with memory theme. The point of the episode. Both are symbols of potential – of a life that is and one that was.

    I’m sure it’s nothing but red leaves, blue fruit 🙂

    #10670
    Bluesqueakpip @bluesqueakpip

    @whohar – yes I know. And I was being pedantic because I think the meaning in-show is ‘the smell of rain on dry dust’. 🙂 The Doctor’s soul is full of ice/dry dust – and the rain needs to fall.

    It’s starting to: we saw him crying in Name ofTD. But when Clara goes into his time-line, it’s got enough dust for a dust-storm; it’s a ruined desert of a place.

    #10672
    thommck @thommck

    I just had an idea! (It only hurt a little bit 😉 )

    Trenzalore isn’t the grave of the Doctor, it’s the grave of the TARDIS :O

    He killed it when crash-landing onto the planet. That would certainly be a game-changer. No more type 40 TARDIS. Think about it, the TARDIS shouldn’t die just because the Doctor did.

    This means that in the 50th Clara will get a message to 10 to come and rescue them by materialising inside his timeline (ewww)

    I think this theory may be the worst kind of sacrilege for the show but you never know …

    #10673
    ScaryB @scaryb

    @bluesqueakpip

    it’s a ruined desert of a place

    Very poetic 🙂 You’ld expect it to be though, this is a dead Dr’s timestream, the scar tissue (in time) that’s left after his (extremely long) lifetime of time travel. Calling it scar tissue suggests that in time, time will heal itself, so that eventually the Dr’s timestream will fade completely, as he disappears from the collective universe memory.

    That reminds me – one of the things I really liked about this episode is how it references the fact of the Dr’s history, it shows the effects of being such an unusual person, having timetravelled more than anyone else and possibly regenerated more in a short space of time (except maybe for the Master).  This is a different Dr from the cosmic adventurer who started out. he’s much older in many ways than Hartnell. He understands on a very personal level exactly what it means to outlive (by centuries) his best friends (and his wife); to be the only one left of his kind (as a result of his own actions).

    And then the reveal of the extremely dark, guilty secret in his personal cellar – this person who has done terrible things, but who in some ways is him.  He’s confronted directly with his own death (and the death of the Tardis who has been his one constant) and he becomes more open emotionally than we have ever seen him. Matt has never been better I think.  He plays the Dr as emotional but as drawing a strength from being more honest (to himself) about how he feels.

    RE: Leaf

    I believe it is the same as earlier in the dream with the tea and champagne. You can conjure things from your memory. The Doctor knew what it looks like. Moreover I believe the Doctor needed an object to land at Claras point of the timestream. Just as in TAtM. Or TEoT (the Master getting the TLs back). And thar Clara got the leaf in his timestream does not mean that she can take it outside.

    #10676
    budinacup @budinacup

    First off can we all agree that Matt Smith is brilliant!

    1st point….. Clarence/Clara bit similar.

    2nd point why was the GI trying to upload the world to wifi in the bells of st john? and here he is trying to break into the Doctors tomb!

    3rd. might have been mentioned but in TbesJ what is the significance of Amy pond having written the book??

    #10677
    Anonymous @

    @penny – I’m picking up something you said yesterday:  “we know from the mini episodes that Eleven is the face that says goodbye to River Song forever.  So River’s stories on screen will have to end before they recast Matt Smith.”

    I don’t want to sound stupid, but I’ll do it anyway  🙂  … what mini episodes are you speaking of?

    #10678
    Anonymous @

    @phileasf – re Clara-as-Doctor theory:  “she might have seen herself in the timestream and not realised she was seeing the Doctor — she’d have thought she was seeing herself, now that she’s all scattered over the Doctor’s life.”

    Now that sir is an excellent point!  And it brings us back to Hide when the Tardis shows her a projection of herself.  Is that a Fragmented Clara issue, or a Clara-as-Doctor issue?  I’m still wondering if every episode this half-series has Clara Prime in it, or perhaps a Fragmented Clara in one or two.  What if Hide’s Clara was Fragmented?  Then the Tardis is showing her Clara Prime, ‘the person she most trusts’.

    #10679
    budinacup @budinacup

    @Shazzbot

    i’m still wondering if every episode this half-series has Clara Prime in it, or perhaps a Fragmented Clara in one or two.

    They have already done this with Amy when she was flesh for half a series. so i hope they are not re-using an old idea!

    @whisht“bonkers ones like us (who still think Ganger Doctor is on the prowl).”

    What are you on about?!  Of course he still is out there!  What was that glowing sonic doing in that skeletal hand if not?  🙂

    Another one for the putative Loose Ends thread/blog, for sure.

    @Shazbott @whisht   He did say there may be a way back……..so of COURSE there was a way back, which can only mean he is still out there!

    Anonymous @

    OK, everyone, here is the most bonkers theory ever (not that I really believe it myself, I just want to win ‘The Most Insane Theory of Them All’ prize):

    The Doctor’s daughter, Jenny, is the Hurt Doctor.  She zoomed away from the Hath and we never saw her again – she could have done bad things, not having any Time Lord mentor and not understanding consequences the way our Doctor has learnt to do.

    She’s essentially a clone of him, i.e., she is him – so she could be inside his own timestream.

    @craig – Do I win?  Do I win?  😀

    #10683
    budinacup @budinacup

    @Shazzbot as bonkers as that is…………… its a perfectly believable theory in the bonkers Whoniverse!! and i think not only are you the fore runner for the bonkers theory award but also…… most plausible, That is why the Doctor has kept it secret, because its his own child that caused such a terrible thing to happen. It would also mean that SM wont shorten the lifespan of the show by adding a regen, but the opposite….. extending it with a new stream of time lord lore!

    #10684
    WhoHar @whohar

    @chickenelly.

    petrichor is the smell the Tardis leaves when it dematerializes

    Yes, I like this alot. I love the fact that the Tardis has a smell.

    Hello btw. Seems like ages since we chatted. How’s your, ahem, grandmother?

    #10685
    Anonymous @

    @budinacup – but, you’re treating that seriously, and I was just having a bit of fun!

    However, when you say “That is why the Doctor has kept it secret, because its his own child that caused such a terrible thing to happen” that actually adds a veneer of credence to my loopiness.

    And that’s why Hurt Doctor can’t have The Name of the Doctor – because Jenny (in this context, we presume she regenerated into John Hurt somewhere along the line) isn’t really The Doctor, she’s just a clone of Bluntwin Hootwhistle (copyright @bluesqueakpip), and so hasn’t earned the title, the reputation, of ‘Doctor’.

    And Clara perhaps didn’t see Jenny / Hurt Doctor in ‘our’ Doctor’s timestream, because Jenny’s a clone so whilst something about her still allows her to ‘be’ in 11’s timestream, her escapades on her own are outside it.

    Egads, am I really trying to make this wild flight of fancy make sense?!

    WhoHar @whohar

    @bluesqueakpip

    I was being pedantic

    One person’s pedantry is another person’s precision.

    This is good though, as it ties in petrichor – just need the Delight bit now.

    Ooh, hang on. What if we take @chickenelly‘s definition.

    Crimson, eleven, delight, petrichor.

    Maybe it refers to the (Hurt / Tennant / Smith) Doctor’s joy at the Tardis finally taking off from somewhere. Just need the Crimson bit now. Red Tardis anyone?

    @Shazzbot By definition all bonkers theories are bonkers so to take 1 seriously we have to seriously consider them all on the same plain. I really like he Jenny/Hurt Doctor therum!

    Awww, @craig – you ARE good to me!  I assume that’s my prize for ‘The Most Insane Theory Ever’, and it was a good’un.

    The 4th one down from the top appears to tell it all about the end of River – and certainly cements my theory that we’ve seen the last of River Song in that tender goodbye kiss in TNotD.

    Just a few lovely moments to repeat:

    1) Doctor: ‘You’ve got 10 minutes to get dressed’
    River: ‘That’s so close to the perfect sentence’
    YOWZA!

    2) River: ‘How many hands do you have?’
    YOWZA!

    3) ‘gargouillements de bebe’
    My French language lessons never included that.  🙂

    4) ‘atterissage’ for the noise of the Tardis

    Thank you sir and will have to re-watch!

    oh, and @craig how could I forget:  Fish-Queen!  Fish a central character!  Fish as … erm, sorry, wrong fish.  Must wait 3 hours ’til the pet shops open.  😀

    @ardaraith Yeah, as one of the reviews on the wikipedia page says, “Good Night” and “First Night”/”Last Night” had more emotion and “more information and logic than any of the aired episodes”.

    @Shazzbot My favourite line, just for the silliness value, is from The Doctor, who has faced many of the deadliest foes in the Universe:

    Do you get scared on Ghost Trains? I get a bit scared. Is it okay if I hold your hand?

    😀

    I don’t think the fourth one neccessarily shows the last time he sees River. The whole point of the mini episode is that he is sentimental and keeps going back to the same places that they both love. Admittedly he might be wary of taking her to Delirium the first time, but if she loved it then didn’t disappear from his life, then he might keep taking her there every now and again, even in his 12th, 13th, 14th etc. incarnations. “Spoilers”!

    @craig thanks for sharing the mini-sodes

    @Shazzbot

    #10696
    Anonymous @

    @craig , @penny – my only problem with these mini-episodes is that they aren’t simply ‘icing on the cake’ – they actually drive forward the plot in massive ways.  We learn that the Doctor saves worlds whilst his companion(s) sleep — he helps ‘a possessed orchestra on a moonbase’, prevents supernovas, and tells the history of the universe in jokes and also does locum (assumedly physician) work in Brixton – yeah, well, erm, those last two are pretty much ‘icing’ although the latter surely would have made an excellent televised adventure.

    But the moments with River are integral to her entire arc.  I assume everyone questioning whether River Song will appear again haven’t seen these mini-episodes, because no matter what you say, Craig, it’s made pretty clear that Older 11 and Younger 11 have a conversation about making sure River has a really memorable time at the last place he sees her.

    No-one yearns for the return of River Song as much as I do, simply because she deflates the ‘Doctor is a GOD’ balloon so precisely – sure, he’s pretty good, but he doesn’t know/see everything – and after 1200 years, still cannot land the Tardis with the brakes off.  River’s the Uber-Companion:  she’s one step ahead, always; but, she can still be vulnerable and still need saving (or release from her prison cage) by the Doctor, and she still uses emotion as her ultimate weapon against/ for the Doctor.

    Btw, that moment in the mini-episode when the Doctor calls for Rory because ‘she (Amy) is having emotions!’ is sublime. He simply doesn’t ‘get’ human emotions.  But it still raises the question why the Doctor can express to and understand from similar emotions with River – is it cuz she is TL?

    Really sorry if this has been posted upstream, but its taken me all week to go through the 900 odd posts here on this forum… !

    A few ponderings

    Can “sleep” refer to the sleep (or hibernate mode) on computers

    Could Hurt Dr be 11th “Dad”…? Someone mentioned upstream that Hurt Dr could be son of 11th, but i could maybe see it the other way… So  son suffers the torment of knowing what father did! There is a lot of family values in Who… right and wrongs.

    I love the idea that Dr/River begets Clara begets Sarah! (although only know a what i have read here about that character!

    I am still pondering on that devilishy intriguing “cot” not only referred to in “Good man” but also what Clara saw in the the centre of the Tardis..? The end scene of that esp in series 6 had alot of hanging threads that could easily be picked up..

    Makes total sense to do superb back story of the Time War with the big screen budget and all that. (although personally i havent managed to get on with 3D (makes me all fuzzy eyed) still i suppose an opportunity to see in 2D..! After all the story/script is the important issue..

    When i have actually got through all 900 posts i will not know what to do with all the time! I must say that you are all very clever people and i have really enjoyed the forum fantastic bonkers theories.. i wonder if its time to put a few of them in list of crazyness..(or equally) a list of what the evidence shows us….

    penny @penny

    @Shazzbot I think the Doctor calls Rory when Amy is “having emotions” is because the writers think it’s funny to make woman somehow more emotional then men.  This plays into conventional stereotypes of women being hysterical and over-emotional, while men are portrayed as playing it cool under pressure.

    I think River will appear again if the actor playing her agrees to be in more episodes and therefore has little to do with what we have already learned about her character.  Although this final “sweeps” episode seems to attempt to bring closure to Rivers demise.  The Doctor tells Clara that she is in fact (some sort of) “ex” [girlfriend].

    My original point about River never deciding she is in love with the Doctor has to do with the problem of their relationship more broadly.  That both of them are more or less told by older versions of their spouses that they will in fact marry and therefore everything happens as it should to avoid a paradox (they agree because they believe that their future selves do in fact agree to the relationship).  They have to because the narrators (the writers) tell them what to think and feel.  We have to remember that characters in stories are not in fact autonomous agents capable of making decisions.

    I have to ask in astonishment, did you see the entire Amy/ Rory arc?  Because in my mind, it was made very clear that Rory was the more ’emotional’ of the two.  He clearly loved Amy more than she loved him.  Even in ‘Amy’s Choice’ I thought it was a cheat that she chose to kill herself over Rory’s death — because in the end that episode was really all about the Doctor forcing Amy to see that she wasn’t ‘hotting it up’ for him (the Doctor);  and in a side-note, Amy realising that no-one would ever love her the way Rory did.

    And in light if your pronouncement, what do you make of Rory the Roman standing guard over the Pandorica for 2000 years?

    And in that one sentence, you have negated everything that River Song’s arc was about.  Oh yes, River loved the Doctor, wholeheartedly; but have you ever, ever, seen anyone give less physical actualisation about that fact?  The moment I found most revealing in TNotD was the Doctor crying – so hard he had to run back to his Tardis – over the thought of how long he had left River behind.

    But this is why this forum is so grand – there is room for all theories, for all positions, and my own are probably overly sentimental. 😉

    3rd. might have been mentioned but in TbesJ what is the significance of Amy pond having written the book??

    Apparently (I haven’t red the story) it has a lot of parallels with what happens. It also features one of Clara’s ‘echos’ as the girl on the front cover. This is also the one the spoonhead is disguised as in her house and seen in the NotD as a young Victorian girl.
    I suppose that implies the GI may have known about the fragmented Clara’s?
