    Hello @scaryb and everyone else!

    I did have a bit of a wobble this year, as what was conceived as an enthusiastic van forum about a show we loved (and we were possibly the first in this new format) became such a nest for trolls. And a lot of you regulars over there didn’t show up this year, prob for the same reasons. So I seriously considered quitting mid-season.

    Obv I never would, but it’s something I really do struggle to understand – this idea that the show is hideously worse than it was in the grand revival? If this kind of internet culture had existed back in 2005… well I don’t know! I just think negativity has gained to much traction and I enjoy enjoying a show I enjoy (and also love and care for)>

    Any of you going to make the DVD fan event in London this coming Monday?

    xx

    Ooh, is song-of-the-episode a game that actually happens? Am well behind this! Maybe I should suggest one each week from now on. Well, I stand by Beyonce (I will always stand by Beyonce), but for fear-related songs, you can’t go too far wrong with this from Pulp…

    Thanks Guys! Yes that was fun to put together and we’ll be doing similar with all the big franchises and a few of the smaller ones as we approach our Sci-DFi season ‘Days Of Fear And Wonder’

    It’s all been done with a new ‘immersive storytelling’ tool called Shorthand which while still in its beta stages a bunch of people are using. The landmark piece done with it so far is this Snowfall piece from the NYT. It’s a bit of a read…

    Hello! Yes that tube message was lovely. It was a quote from Moffat at the Celebration last year as I remember. I did a little tear when heard it, as I remember

    Very sad news. It feels strange to be talking like this about people one has never met, but I suppose this is one of the wonderful things that can only happen on the internet that doesn’t get talked about enough in the age of “trolling”. This quite genuine outpouring of respect proves that you people have built something beautiful together. It is truly humbling.

    Have been reading again through a few of his posts at his user page here and all I can really do is second the above, from the point of view of somebody who virtually-knew him a lot less than you do.

    His posts for the G will be here.

    https://id.theguardian.com/profile/htpbdet/public?activity-stream=articles

    I am sure many of you will be raising a glass to him at your get together on the 22nd, which I still hope to attend. And presuming I am allowed, will be sure to honour him as best I can in this week’s installment of the classic series rundown.

    Thoughts and respect to all @htpbdet‘s family.

    Hello Everyone,

    What sad news. I’ve not spent as much time on here as I would have liked, but it’s been wonderful to watch how this site has grown out of a little  thing I do. And very inspiring the community that has arisen – how rare that such affection and genuine grief would come out of a forum.

    @blenkinsopthebrave yes, as @phaseshift points out, his writings will live on in his user account over at G.

    https://id.theguardian.com/profile/htpbdet/public

    I’m sure everyone will raise a toast to him at the planned drinks.

    RIP x

    DanMartinUK @replies

    Oh yes of course. My intention is to do a post fully crediting this wonderful forum with that headline you took from Rory in Dinosaurs and made into something truly special. I will of course credit every theory to the forum every theory I use, and each user too. But I just like the idea of using the best of fandom to publicise the show. I believe @craig is gonna be in touch with me to discuss how to do this via @shazzbot

    Just like this (totally crazy) post by my US colleague Ellie (NB  the BuzzFeed yanks are crazy for UK cult stuff)

    All change then. Though I’ll be keeping up the Guardian episode blogs, for the time being at least…

    Hello Gang,

    It’s been a while. I’m getting separation anxiety at no more new ep blog parties til November.

    The Two Doctors at BFI yesterday was fun. And no end of behind-the-scenes drama rumours as to the guests who didn’t turn up… Frazer Hines made some wonderful phallic jokes though.

    Regards!

    Hello Sweeties,

    Teaser before bedtime. Picking on the hivemind again for  something I’m thinking of pitching and writing. Who do we think are the Doctor’s most rubbishest opponents? Those most easily defeated? Aside from the Daleks (diminishing returns), the Cybermen (gold/bad scripts) and Melody (being in love with him) …from both old and new, who does everyone think, “oh just go home love and let’s not even bother with this 4 parter?”

    Jammie Dodgers all round for the most fun suggestions. And we’re celebrating #RiverSongDay over on the Gruan tomorrow (today)

    @phaseshift

    Haha, I think I actually said that on first identifying this misunderstanding! We’ve also ended up doing specific episodes rather than stories cos that is our format, which I also argued against but was talked down. But hey ho that’s just semantics.

    This is a good idea on The Ultimate Foe. If we go with it I will  of course credit you. Good old Pip and Jane.

    And yup, we’re going the whole way. Which again, I first misunderstood and presented a purely BG list. But what is nice is that, even for the kids, there’s no longer any differentiation between BG and AG is there? Everyone just looks at it as one long  story

    @whohar

    Haha. Oh yes, of course I can change the list. I just don’t WANT to. And in the true spirit of Doctor Who fandom, this is all about ME, mwahaha

    @whohar @scaryb

    Alas we cannot change it. Once something’s published, it’s published. We’d all been talking at cross purposes at what ‘classic’ actually means. It would have been useful to have your ‘BG’ phrase there and then!

    DanMartinUK @replies

    Hello Sweeties

    Thanks for all your lovely comments about our classic series series, or indeed our BG series. But we have hit a fork in the road, and I thought I would crowdsource y’all. Due to a bit of editorial misunderstanding over at the Gruan, I first complied a list of 20 stories that were the most noteworthy, the ones with big conversations to have over. But when they launched the first one, it turned out the badging billed it as ‘The Greatest Episodes Ever’. It hasn’t affected the list up til now, but going forward, I had Timelash down, as an example of the very worst. I had The Happiness Patrol down as an example of the very gayest. But I can’t in all conscience bill those as The Greatest can I?

    (Well I would argue the case for The Happiness Patrol, but that is me)

    And indeed, being no great fan of Davison or the post-60s Cybermen I can’t really stand Earthshock, but it’s such a marquee story that we can’t really leave it out either. And what the bleedin’ hell does one about Colin and McGann?! Revelation Of The Daleks or The Two Doctors when we’ve already omitted The Ark In Space?! So my question is… do you think the bad ones warrant greatness if they turn out to be significant? Can we love ‘bad’ Doctor Who just the same?

    I am speaking as a hardline McCoy apologist here also xx

    Thanks @phaseshift has been a pleasure! A little sideline from my normal work that has seemed to explode into quite a big thing. And yes we still have plenty more golden oldie stories to get fishy over. We should have Genesis up this week, after a bit of a gap dealing with all this actual finale business…

    Aha well that is a nice tribute! Cool place you’ve got here.

    @shazzbot the preview ended after the Doctor jumped into the grave thing,  so had a rare experience of being able to watch like a normal viewer… was half expecting bigger twist but for the best they didn’t give him a name right?

    Yes it seems like a have a Valeyard doppelganger somewhere 😉
