@bobbingbird Nice spot on ARC and also <sobs a little> Noah’s arc/ ark which saved some of the creatures when the great flood came. So by analogy, Amy, River and Clara are the Doctor’s litle ARC/ Ark of salvaged Time Lord from the great flood of the Time War…

Morning/ evening all – I see the nightshift has had dolphins and turtles and TARDIS temper-tantrums and all-sorts.

Waves at new posters @thebadfairyprincess and @whofan-matt

@Fulcanelli Well I definitely think you’re onto something on the “impossible” front, but to me that points again to Clara being a Pond:

Mad Impossible Amy Pond = Amy

    The Impossible Astronaut = River

    The Impossible Girl = Clara

I do like @bluesqueakpip ‘s idea that all the Doctor’s female relatives/ loves (including the TARDIS) are combining to save him.

And I suppose what is impossible about the Ponds is that the Doctor, destroyer of his own people, has been “impossibly” gifted with new new Time Lords, thanks to Amy’s pregnancy in the TARDIS, River’s conception as a “child of the TARDIS” with a set of regenerations and now, we think, two hearts and then (I strongly suspect) her own children with the Doctor.

The dark Pied Piper who locked away all the children of Gallifrey and lost his own, gifted by a universe at once cruel and forgiving with children of his own again..

    @bluesqueakpip @ardaraith @timeloop – agreed!

Gallifrey is in, in Nu Who, in a “bubble universe” if you like, ahem rather like the one helpfully and probably not coincidentally recently illustrated in Hide

There, communication could only take place between the sealed bubble universe and this one by “blood calling to blood” – the time traveller descendant of Emma-the-empath contacting her, like a “ghosting” message.

So, is someone perhaps contacting the Doctor from inside the Time Lock, someone related to him by blood? Clara says she doesn’t believe in ghosts but…

Oh and @solongandthanksfor welcome to the boards and to Clan Fish!

    Lovely call-name.

I only spotted you’d posted because I was looking at the new members list. Not sure what you’ve done there – posted the link to the trailer (a very fine one) in your profile I think? Perhaps our wonderful webmaster @craig can help when he returns from his travels.

In the meantime – sign in, then click on the most recent dicussion thread, Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS, and post in there to join the conversation.

Yes I too like Lindalee’s theory that the TARDIS is protecting Clara. The Doctor keeps assuming the TARDIS is jealous (ego much!) but perhaps he can’t see how dangerous he is / is becoming whereas Old Sexy can.

    @fivefaces – a warm welcome!

Yes nice point about the phone number. It makes me think about River again, because back in Asylum of the Daleks the Doctor says “there aren’t many people who can do that – send me a message” to the mysterious “mother” who summons him in fear for her daughter.

We know fine well River can send him messages, “hello sweetie x” on the psychic paper.

The TARDIS and River protecting Clara? Clara is definitely River’s daughter or granddaughter and hence also a “child of the TARDIS” (erm maybe)…

Welcome also to @osakahatter – fits in with all the parent/ child themes you were discussing upthread.

Hey everyone, if you want @dr-clara ‘s name to go “live” it needs a dash between Dr and Clara…

@phileasf I LOVE the idea that the whole thing was a set-up by dark-dark Doctor.

AND this ties in exactly with what I had to say about Amy’s Choice over on the Hide thread (and indeed at the time).  I wondered whether the Doctor had set up the whole “space pollen” deal to make Amy choose between him and Rory i.e. to get her to realise that her choice was Rory so that the Doctor could have both Amy and Rory as travelling companions without the awkward sexual tension.

Would he, could he, trick his companions in these dark ways? Oh I think so….

This also ties in with @bluesqueakpip ‘s looping theory because events do keep happening in different yet similar ways over and over again.

Not only as @phileasf says did Amy and Rory have to jump off a building in The Angels Take Manhattan and thus re-write time/ escape from a negative/ false reality, just as the Doctor and Clara did this episode, but that is also what Amy and the Doctor did in Amy’s Choice – they committed suicide by deliberately crashing their VW camper van in order to escape fromt the “reality” in which Rory had died.

Yes, I continue to be a bit obsessed with Amy’s Choice as significant to the arc narrative !

The looping ties in with the on/off switch between different realities the Doctor mentions in JttCotT. Perhaps we’re flickering back and forth between two different universes/ time-streams and have been throughout Moff’s tenure thanks to the collision of the TARDISes in the Eleventh Hour, The Big Bang and Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS.

Welcome to your first post @dr-clara and it’s a good one!

Goodness we seem to have a whole comet-tail of lurkers twinkling in the night – I’d love to know how many non-signed up folk read this little Whoniverse…

Yes in Hide our empath Emma told Clara the Doctor had “ice in his heart” singular, which @scaryb picked up on as possibly significant at the time. I initially poo-pooed her <hangs fishy heads in shame> on the grounds that Emma would of course assume one heart, not knowing the Doc was alien BUT then we got to thinking…

I like your idea a lot – that either Clara is an alternative time-stream Eleven or, a la Plato’s Symposium, the other half of the Doctor’s whole.

We’ve talked before about red as the colour of love and blue as the colour of ice and Clara’s empathic qualities, so yes, maybe she is his empathic self as you say.  This also works, as has been discussed on her previously,  if she is his memory store –  if it is his memories, particularly of his companions and hence of love, which represent his “soul” and hence keep him from being “dark Doctor”.

Now we can have a lot of fun combining all the possibilities in @whohar‘s list because Clara could be both the Doctor’s granddaughter and the temporary repository of his memories etc etc…

    Very nice work @whohar

And some enjoyable physics from the nightshift @bobbingbird and @blenkinsopthebrave @Shazzbot and a grumbly @haveyoufedthefish

    You’ve missed, under Clara:

1m Clara is a regeneration of River Song

in Clara is River and the Doctor’s daughter

1o Clara is the Master’s TARDIS aka dark-IDRIS

1p Clara is connected to River via CAL and the Library

1q Clara is the Doctor’s mother

1r Clara is a computer programme operated either by a musical pass-key or by the phrase “Run you clever bou amd remember”

    Under Dark Doctor:

2c should be amended to “aka the coming of The Valeyard”

2k  Ganger Doctor is in the mix (two Doctors are running around at once)

2l The Doctor was scattered through time/ across fractured time-streams/ universes  in the TARDIS explosion and we are seeing some versions moving out from the Big Bang and some versions moving towards it (hence all the red shift/ blue shift symbolism)

2m The Doctor is an ancient God-being who has been through many regeneration cycles prior to the one he presently remembers/ is forgetting and he is now going through his latest Osirian death/ rebirth

    Under TARDIS

3d Three TARDISes should be amended to – from tEH, tBB and TttCotT (because this episode is the third explosion)

    Please amend accordingly 🙂

@holymackerel  I don’t think your link is working? But I found the page.

Huh – apparently in Logopolis the Master hid his TARDIS, disguised as a laurel bush, in the cloister room of the Fourth Doctor’s TARDIS. I’ve always loved that the Master has a working chamelion circuit.

We do keep hearing the cloister bell go ding!

@htpbdet posited awhile ago that perhaps the Doctor and the Master were both related to Clara in some way .

No overt indications of the Master in the mix as yet, BUT as the 50th is coming up I suppose one does have to ask… is it possible to do the 50th without either the Master or the daleks?

Perhaps we will get them both…

    Juniperfish @replies

Ah ha! There you are @holymackerel – all hail Omega-Fish etc. 🙂

Yes, there have been various iterations of the theory that Clara is the TARDIS or connected to the TARDIS or even that she is the Master’s TARDIS. This last one fits best with your thought:

    whose TARDIS was she?

Frankly if she turns out to be the embodiment of the Master’s TARDIS that would be brilliant because its relatively left-field re where most of the theorising is taking place right now. As you say, if she is someone else’s TARDIS that would explain the antagonism of the Doctor’s TARDIS….

Although, remembering, as we have, that theTARDIS hates paradoxes (Jack Harkness and Old Amy) the aversion could be due to Clara’s timey paradoxical nature, which leads back to other ideas, such as @bluesqueakpip ‘s that she is a future incarnation of the Doc himself.

It’s certainly striking that the Doctor is trying to teach her to fly the TARDIS, when previously we’ve been led to believe that only the Doctor and River can pilot her…

    Juniperfish @replies

@scaryb @zaphod and @miapatrick nice spot that there was also a charred zombie Doctor running about. Even more creepy!

@haveyoufedthefish nice combo of our earlier three TARDISes collision theory and Clara-is-scattered-in-time theory into one.

Not only that, but, as I mentioned up-stream, some of the liquid Gallifreyan Encyclopedia got spilled on Clara and, if time has not been entirely re-written by the Big Friendly Button, Clara may have been scattered into the universe with pieces of go-live Time Lord history about her person. More rebirth of the Time Lords possibilities?

I’ve just posted on the other place that dalek line from The Pandorica Opens; “the cracks in time are the work of the Doctor”. This episode would seem to confirm that they are indeed.

    @wolfweed and @whisht ……….. Eggs!

I think it’s significant that eggs have cropped up again in an episode where we see the Doctor’s Gallifreyan crib once more, with its call-back to Amy and her daughter River – the Doctor’s wife and the “child of the TARDIS”.  Clara is a Pond somehow or other, or I’ll be a lizard and a doubled-in-time fish no longer.

We can also remember that Madame Kovarian’s name was a deliberate reference to egg-harvester (ovarian). So I think the egg motif refers to rebirth (a la my Osiris obsession) but also signals something to do with the progeny of the Doctor.

I’ve been thinking about the egg-tree part of the TARDIS, “a machine that makes machines”, a self-replicating organism. The look of the thing puts me in mind of the many myths of the golden apples, which pleases me because it ties back into the apples the Doctor spits out in the Eleventh Hour and eats in The God Complex.  There’s a Bulgarian folk tale about three brothers and some golden apples but its quite convoluted.. <oh wait, that probably fits!>…

I was struck by the reference (by the Doctor) to the TARDIS as a “labyrinth” which calls back the ball of string from Cold War and the minotaur/ monster from The God Complex.

Given all the dark Doctor portents – do we have…?

The Doctor is a monster at the heart of a labyrinth and that labyrinth is the Time War?

So, over and above the genocide of his people (via their suspension in the Time Lock) what other crime did the Doctor commit during the Time War? Did he perhaps, sacrifice his daughter and flee with his granddaughter?

Eggs = progeny of the Doctor and rebirth?

Flickering lights = the Silence and that switch between different time-streams/ realities which the Doctor talks about this episode?

    Music = Song = pass-key to the Doctor’s memories/ Professor River Song?

    Ok – I’m done for now 🙂

@bobbingbird – aargh sorry about the frustrating time-lag. Good to have a decent night-shift on here now tho’, so we’ll look out for your reactions when you get there!

Morning all (evening all, for those other-side)

Does anyone else wonder what that magical purpley liquid from the bottles full of the Encyclopaedia of Gallifrey in the TARDIS library might do to Clara?

We know time has been re-written but not totally over-written, so perhaps Clara retains some of that information.

I wonder if the TARDIS tipped that over her on purpose?

NB – stylistically, the Doctor is such an Earth retro-hound 🙂 Bow-ties and all those leather-bound old-fashioned books…

@rema Welcome! On the colour coding red/ blue. red/  blue.

“… like a light switch, two positions, flickering together at super-infinite speeds, running together for a brief second…”

Yes, it’s subtle but it’s there. Clara is wearing a grey dress in the final scene, not a blue one, but she does, as you say, have a blue towel slung over her shoulder.  Red shift indicates an expanding universe and blue a contracting one, relative to the big bang… in this case the explosion/ not explosion of the TARDIS.

    @haveyoufedthefish

Mmmmn – I’d have to rewatch – pretty sure we see Clara’s hand with the burn illegible and then it gets more legible as the journey continues first time around… <freeze frame indeed 🙂 >

The re-set was a re-write however, and not a go-back-to-zero as @bluesqueakpip pointed out on the other place (the photo of the salvagers contains their father the second time around).

I’m now wondering if the whole thing was the TARDIS testing Clara, because the first time around they are not getting on, which is why the Doctor turns off the protective shielding to make it easier for Clara to fly her, but the second time around this does not happen. Clara has been to the centre of the TARDIS in the interval and the TARDIS approves?

Loved the Doctor asking Clara if she felt safe on a scale of One to Ten, Ten being “woo-hoo” and One being “aaargh”. Rather implies that Eleven is not safe at all, oh dear me no…

Re the swimming pool and Clara’s wet hair at the end – that seemed a deliberate call-back to River in The Day of the Moon…

@besd1 – Welcome! I like the idea Matt was “doing a Tom Baker”, although I didn’t catch that vibe myself – not sufficient toothy grin 🙂

    @haveyoufedthefish

not if he didn’t run off in the tardis till past 100 years old…

Dammit! And yet, and yet… as @scaryb says there is something fishy going on with the lettering burned onto Clara’s hand.

It appears slowly the first loop around and only becomes legible in the exploded heart of the TARDIS, but the second loop around, when future Doctor appears through the time-crack into the console room with the the time grenade/ big friendly button as solution, it burns Clara’s hand straight away.

Clara says that she is tired at the end and the Doctor remarks as if she had lived two days at once. So again I wonder if there is a “slow path” and a “fast path” and a switch which keeps flipping between them, which echoes the slow road mentioned by Ten in The Girl in the Fireplace, as well as the red waterfall and green anchor time-streams of The Girl Who Waited, one slower than the other….

    #6957
    Juniperfish @replies

Hmmn – the Doctor tells Clara just before they jump that he has piloted the TARDIS for “over nine hundred years”.

Remember we’ve been hearing his (fluctuating) age for a while now – “I’m 1103” says the older version of the Doctor in The Impossible Astronaut (the one who turns out to be Tesselector Doctor second time around). So wouldn’t he say “over 1000 years” to Clara, if this Doctor was the version who had lived through the events of The Wedding of River Song

Which time-stream are we in? Red waterfall or Green anchor (The Girl Who Waited)?

Perhaps, as hinted last week with the pocket universe where time moved differently, the issue has to do with two different time-speeds in collision?

I also got a call-back to The Doctor’s Wife when Clara encountered a version of the Doctor who couldn’t see her in the corridors of the TARDIS – to Amy and Rory running around in the TARDIS interior away from House and time moving at different speeds then too – remember scary “old Rory”?

    Juniperfish @replies

@scaryb @bluesqueakpip Oh – fantastic on the numerology decoding – so the metanarrative by numbers continues apace!

@haveyoufedthefish Huh – I didn’t register the name “Gregor” the first time around but now I see you mention it, it puts me in mind of Kafka’s story “Metamporphosis” (on which Cronenberg’s “The Fly” is based) – in which a person is slowly transformed into a monster……..  Doctor dalekisation parallel ahoy!

Oh and the Doctor’s explanation for the two “realities” in the TARDIS console room whereby Clara is trapped in one and the Doctor is in the other (which riffs on the two time-streams of The Girl Who Waited)?

“It’s like a light switch, two positions, flickering together at super-infinite speeds, running together for a brief second…”

So perhaps the expanding universe (red shift) and contracting universe (blue shift) radiating out from The Big Bang of the TARDIS collisions are in  simultaneous inter-collision in the overall three season arc, which fits with the theme of death and rebirth, both on Osiris / Isis mythological and Dr. Who the show metanarrative levels?

Seems as if the Time War and The Big Bang are connected somehow too…

Well a re-watch is proving exciting!

@bluesqueakpip what do you make of the numbers 0989 which we see near the start of the episode as a sort of serial number inside the brothers’ salvage ship?

Also, more dalekisation/ Dalek-Clara POV when we see through Tricky’s cyborg eye-implant (again near the start of the episode) – dalek eyestalk vision anyone?

@htpbdet noted that in Clara’s tour of the damaged TARDIS we see the Doctor’s old Gallifreyan cot with its mobile, “the Doctor’s first stars”:

Melody’s cot, a toy TARDIS (an in-joke or a clue?)

The “toy TARDIS” is, in fact, the one we see in Let’s Kill Hitler which Amy made as a child and which Mels throws into the air in a lovely shot which then shifts into the actual TARDIS in-flight. So, this is a very strong suggestion that Clara is a Pond in my view – River and the Doctor’s child?

    Woo-hoo …

@phaseshift and @jimthefish – ahhh thanks for the music ref – The Cult’s “Fire Woman” huh ? Yes, definite phoenix reference.

The lyrics are about burning desire (presumably) but like @htpbdet I got a “Clara is family” vibe this week. Some of the lines do refer to a “little sister” (albeit in the song that’s a figure of speech):

My heart’s a ball of burnin’ flame
    Oh, yes it is
Trancing like a cat on a hot tin shack
    Lord, have mercy
    Come on little sister

@htpbdet wow I’m very impressed by all the Who call-backs you spotted! Lovely – I will listen out for those on a re-watch.

I’ve just reviewed the ep over on Dan’s blog.

I think my theory that Vincent’s painting showed three exploding TARDISes is still on the go – what if the almost exploding TARDIS of The Eleventh Hour, the exploding TARDIS of The Big Bang and the exploding/ not exploding TARDIS of Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS are all, somehow, folded together in the space-time continuum?

As I said on Dan’s blog, the Doctor’s reach through a crack in the TARDIS with the reset grenade here called-back, at least for me, his reach through the crack in time in the Silurian two-parter (just before Rory died and was erased from time) when he pulled out… a piece of the exploded TARDIS.

Cloister bell, mirrored realities/ time-streams/ darkening Doctor – all check!

I like it and hmmmmmm. This post http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Cloister_Bell enumerates (not sure how accurately) the times the cloister bell has been heard in Who to date both in TV canon and in extended universe (novels etc.)

What is interesting is that it seems to clang away whenever alternative universes collide.

I had completely not registered at the time that it sounds in Moffat’s short “Children in Need” Time Crash, when the Tenth Doctor collides with the Fifth Doctor.

    Hidden in plain sight…

When @craig gets back from his trip we might think about a little “How to Navigate” Master/ Mistress post or space perhaps (much as I am generally loth to write down the “rules” for anything)

@bluesqueakpip We’ve heard the cloister bell when River is trapped in the exploding TARDIS and also in the Doctor’s Room 101 in The God Complex (which I’m pretty sure contained a “dark” version of himself) both of which lead me to believe that an explosion and multiple Doctors/ time-lines are the sort of perilous events inclined set off the “bells of St. John”…

@bluesqueakpip  Well my theory is that the cloister bell rings when it is the “eleventh hour”…

i.e. when the Doc is in pretty dire straits (in this particular case trapped in a bubble universe).

This, timey-wimely, leads back to the three season time-loop theory that the Doctor’s TARDIS in the Eleventh Hour was spinning out from the explosion in the Big Bang when he collided with other versions of himself.

We need to do a post of all the times we’ve heard the cloister bell, to cogitate mightily upon…

And what do you mean “bonkers theorists”? I feel sure our little corner of the Whoniverse is actually the equivalent of the Library. Vashta Nerada may maraud outside, inside we have infinity 🙂

@phaseshift Oooh how lovely it’s DJ-Friday, and very well-remembered re Mr. Cope and his marvellous love of standing stones not to mention his riot of an autobiography 🙂

I’m replying with Bowie just because we really do have to have Starman in the archives of the Who Forum, and I know Cope is a Bowie fan. I really want to make it to the V&A to see the Bowie retrospective.

<screeches in a spiders of Metebelis three sort of way> and I still can’t make links embed…

@phaseshift Oooh that looks deeply tempting…

@bluesqueakpip Oh no, no, no – who can possibly top Smithy? I suppose we will never be so spoiled again as to get a single actor playing the Doctor for seven years (as we did with Tom Baker) <sigh>

@blenkinsopthebrave Goodmorrow to you! It’s tipple o’clock on a Friday night here.

@ardaraith Hmmn interesting you should bring up the Medusa cascade – I remembered a line from The Fires of Pompeii spoken by the prophetess there:

“Your real name is hidden. It burns in the stars, in the Cascade of Medusa herself”

This line is what made me first suggest that the Doctor’s name could be the key to the time lock on Gallifrey – that somehow, the Doctor inscribed his name in the Medusa Cascade as a seal…

Yes – it would mean that River is Gallifrey’s Mitochondrial Eve and the Doctor’s TARDIS is the Ur TARDIS. So the Big Bang explosion of the last TARDIS created the Time Lords. It’s pretty nifty 🙂

@bluesqueakpip – oh you’re a Le Guin fan. She’s wonderful, and indeed it would seem “light is the left hand of darkness” in our present mirror universes Doctor story.

@phaseshift (or are you, imperceptibly, being slowly being fishified into @Phasefish indeed hehe…)

I’m so excited by the three season arc.

It’s just the perfect feint. We’ve already revisited that point in time f0r the Doctor’s last farewell to Amelia, so no one will be looking back there again to puzzle as to why exactly the Doctor’s TARDIS was so unstable in the first place. Except, we are 🙂

The Eleventh Hour is surely when the cloister bell tolls…

I think now we’re heading to meet the dark version of the Doctor for whom the Alliance built the Pandorica and against whom Madame Kovarian was fighting her “endless bitter war”.

@lula and @ardaraith OOOOh I just love the River’s heart monitor spot!

I have had a timey wimey theory for a while that the Doctor is the origin-point of the Time Lords, by exposing Melody-in-utero to the Time Vortex. So the “last of the Time Lords” begats the first of them in a Moffish paradox loop…

Yes Dark Doctor-Fish (LOL) is mightily tickled by that clip @ardaraith I can’t wait to see Smithy’s dark-side antics up the ante!
