    @craig

    Harsh, but fair.

    #12373

    Wolfweed has, but no posts and another single-poster as friend.

    Me suspects a set up for on-topic trolling.

    #12365

    @craig – suspicious friend request in inbox….

    #12315

    @doctorcon-1 The DVDs are available in the remaining HMVs, via Amazon or the BBC Store

    #12269

    For no other reason than it set me thinking, some thoughts on Prism and the appalling tendency to try to shoot the messenger. Feel free to dispute, ignore, whatever.

    Shouting angrily at trees

    @Craif @whisht Agree about Google, but reCaptcha only stops stupid humans!

    #12246

    reCaptcha also helps @craig.

    #12244

    Well, FWIW the plug in I mention has proved very effective (the drones tend to be at the same machine, on the same IP address)

    #12232

    It might be worth installing the Stop Spammer Registration plug-in: http://www.blogseye.com/i-make-plugins/stop-spammer-registrations-plugin/

    I use it on a couple of sites I manage and it works pretty well.

    #12189

    @craig and anyone else really. User mery (labeled as Abel) sending spammy private messages – probably not just to me.

    Killkillkillkillkill…..

    Iain Banks has passed away.

    #12085

    Apropos of absolutely nothing, and prompted solely a conversation about pirates elsewhere, if the only thing Moff’s tenure had brought was this:

    Amy in a pirate hat

    His entire tenure would have been worth it.

    Just sayin’

    #12047

    @wolfweed

    Ms Budd’s points are fatuous nonsense and factually inaccurate

    A comprehensive rebuttal that doesn’t even mention Dr Who: http://aidanmoher.com/blog/featured-article/2013/05/we-have-always-fought-challenging-the-women-cattle-and-slaves-narrative-by-kameron-hurley/

    @Shazzbot – you confused feeding it with poking it with a stick 🙂

    @WilburManot

    I am not sexist, but I must say that, if the next Doctor is a woman, I will never watch another episode of DW. My 2 sons feel the same and my wife, who is also a woman, is in complete agreement with us.

    @Shazzbot

    No, no – that was a specific reference to the Firefly comment by @craignixon

    I have no issue with a female Doc, so long as the casting is awesome. No pressure Moff.

    #11999

    @craignixon

    Well I suppose it would be too confusing to have another River….

    #11920

    @chickenelly

    From now on I shall simple refer to you as The Pipe Smoking Trademark Thief (or “Samsung”) for short!

    I’d be cautious about reading too much into that – there’s no reason to suppose that Wheaton is in the loop, but even if he is comes over as the sort of person who would happily play along with misinformation. He has never come across as an arsehole (expect when playing You Know Who).

    Plus CE would be an absolute shoo-in for The Master.

    #11915

    @craig @timeloop has just link to ones where the issue occurs – the @ not attaching to the name. Not really a huge problem, imo, just a WordPress quirk.

    #11913

    Oops – wrong place

    #11911

    @chickenelly

    I’ll see you in court over the bonkers theorising trademark!

    #11884

    @timeloop @scaryb

    Even adjusting for my eccentricity, it can be a tad hit and miss.

    #11832

    @darkenfasl

    Hmm – masked url – I don’t think so.

    (@craig – I think this one needs deleting.)

    TROLL ALERT

    @craig

    The troll may redeem themselves,

    I admire your romanticism…

    #11771

    @Shazzbot

    … who wants a cacophany of people mid-read to tell you what they think the whodunit is all about?

    Anyone who remembers JR or “who’s the daddy of  ‘Chelle’s kid” from ‘stenders the first time round knows the answer to that.. 😉

    #11770

    @onethingannoysme – an account getting deleted in 5,4,3,2….

    Trolls just don’t put the effort in these days, do they?

    #11646

    Despite my theory, the idea of Idris Elba as the Doctor is awesome – @scaryb

    #11638

     @scaryb @timeloop

    What makes you think this announcement hasn’t been completely planned and managed? Looks very planned to me.

    It was definitely not a planned leak – the plan for a shock regeneration has been royally fucked by oh-so-pompous Ian Levine.

    @Bluesqueakpip

    Hmpf Our bonkers theory!

    #11565

    Despite the Moff quote, I think they already know who the next Doctor is.

    For production reasons alone (they will be shooting the Xmas special soon, so it is already written) it makes sense, but also the more I reflect the more I think Matt’s Doctor’s journey has come to a natural end. He is no longer the sole keeper of history; he has said goodbye to both the Ponds and River; he is no longer the poor lonely boy. He has friends.

    Now he just needs to make peace with his heritage. And what better time to make peace than Christmas?

    #11544

    Very surprising the way they’re handling it: two weeks after the season finale

    Some idiot copied the wrong people into an email.

    #11520

    Heads up…

    look away now

    No idea how much in it, but Twitter is alive with rumour of a VERY big announcement at midnight. Sunday Times claiming it will be on their front page.

    #11508

    What were they doing in Venice? What? Seriously?

    Hmm. This was quite clearly explained in-episode.

    #11507

    @scaryb @timeloop @jimthefish @curvedspace

    This is despite the fact that both Post Gap showrunners have explicitly said ‘there is no canon’.

    Although, to offer a dissenting voice (me? surely not!), Moffat’s avowed tendency to lie and both his and RTD’s writing show that they are very respectful of canon and neither has progressed without at least a passing nod to what they may be contradicting. Similarly, take away the gloss and Moff is very respectful to the Holmes source material.

    The most common side-step of canon is the retcon (retrospective (or retroactive) continuity), something which changes our understanding of past events, without changing the facts of it. Retcons have to be done with great care or they can wreck the story of a show Whedon’s undermining of the Flaying of Warren Mears being one of the worst ever).

    Moffatt, in The Name of the Doctor, has just pulled off what I consider to be the greatest retcon ever. There is no contradiction now which cannot be attributed at least in part to the GI and Clara duking it out, liberating all future writers. But they still have a requirement to respect the history of the show.

    Blood calling to blood

    *Has awful flashback to the days of Buffy Season 5 and the number of people who just did get “The Key” despite Joss banging us over the head*

    One of the oldest metaphors in literature and people still demanded a literal explanation.

    Moff, too, tends not to do the literal…

    #11267

    @bluesqueakpip

    they could, but Steven Moffat already has enough flak in his life from his supposed inability to write strong women characters.

    Supposed being the operative word. A noisy bunch of academic feminists got a bee in their collective bonnet. The rest of the world notice River, Amy, Adelaide Brook, Nancy, Reinette, Vastra, Liz 10 – even Cleaves and Rita.

    Speaking of academics with bees in bonnets

    #11265

    @Shazzbot

    Yes I do (and I remain loyal to Jessica, anyway 🙂 ). If you think the kind of comedy she did in Couple is easy, think again and her record goes well prior to that. Somewhere on t’interwebs is her voice-over demo reel. Sexist. Voice. Ever.

    I suspect it is only marginally coincidental that JLC has a similar look to her.

    #11248

    I would favour Gina Bellman as a first female Doctor….sorry….mind wandered.

    She would be splendidly otherworldly (and she is great mates with Moff, thanks to Coupling)

    #11247

    I don’t think they got my best side….

    #11195

    @scaryb @whohar

    Arf! Reformed hack – I know the style book is king.

    #11167

    @whohar

    Ten plus 11 gives you …

    Don’t read anything into the number being spelled out. Although the Guardian Style Guide says:

    Spell out from one to nine; numerals from 10 to 999,999; thereafter use m, bn or tn for sums of money, quantities or inanimate objects in copy, eg 5m tonnes of coal, 30bn doses of vaccine, ÂŁ50tn; but million or billion for people or animals, eg 1 million people, 25 million rabbits, the world population is 7 billion, etc; in headlines always use m, bn or tn

    …the exception is always when a number begins a sentence – then it is spelled out. It is considered very poor style to start a sentence with Arabic numerals.

    #11140

    and I also got the impression he wasn’t very keen on ten’s idea to ’make a back up’ of her. (Possibly because he loved River and ten didn’t).

    There’s no evidence that it was 10’s idea – he just realised that Future!Doc had done so.

    #11117

    Ooooh. A Chesterfield!

    #11097

    @case – if you are on a Mac try Tunelbear or Netscape and access the BBC iPlayer site – you can view for 7 days after broadcast (and contribute to UK consolidated ratings!)

    I’m sure there are ‘doze and Linux equivalents.

    I have a bit of a hair-trigger response to on-topic trolling: it is designed to suck you in first. Delighted to see @craig‘s zero-tolerance response 🙂

    @phaseshift – that video is flipped (still a great scene, but the newspaper headline looks Russian at first glance!)
