I’m not sure about the contractual arrangements. Tennant said he signed a three year deal before “Rose” had been broadcast. It had a termination clause if the revival hadn’t taken off. I think it’s in the interview between him and Catharine Tate I posted on the Companions thread. I guess there could be multiple clauses for various scenarios.

I can’t recall if anyone has suggested “Twelth Night” for the Christmas episode? I’m wordering if Moff could resist after “Eleventh Hour”.

I think they were pretty confident about Tennant; so yes, he may have started off with a three year contract. Already played leading telly roles, worked with RTD before – and mad keen on Doctor Who. 🙂

Because of that I haven’t actually deleted anyone yet (apart from the spambots that got in before I managed to build my electrified spambot wall). I have deleted a few posts. One time that led to that person last weekend deleting themselves. But wouldn’t it be good if someone came on here to troll and actually decided to join in because it was more fun to be constructive?

Yeah, I’m probably a dreamer. But I live in hope. 6 months from now I’ll probably be deleting them left, right and center though, like I’m playing Call of Duty.

Those multiple regen’s could include female, ginger, very old, very young, Ben Whishaw, Ayaode, John Noble, Thewlis etc. (Loving most of the suggestions.) Moffat has toyed with multiple regenerations before, in the Comic Relief, The Curse of Fatal Death. Then at the end of the year, with his filming in the U.S. done with Matt can return to the role he was born for. (Well one can dream..)

Regeneration is the core of the series – that and the TARDIS. There are always new beginnings in Doctor Who.

Coming into this a little late (I’m new).

I noticed in the beginning someone had mentioned this, and I back it – I’d like to see an older Doctor for a change.

Smith was known for being the youngling of the bunch, but honestly Tennant and Eccleston weren’t very old either. Neither was Paul McGann if you want to start dipping into the old show. I want to see a guy with mileage on him. I think it would be a nice change. Once the show hit Peter Davison, the “older doctor” thing sort of went out the window, which is cool, but it would be nice to see it brought back.

My two cents.

EDIT: Oh, and forgot to mention – I saw some people listing ideal name actors to play him. I think it’s critical that whoever plays the Doctor is a “nobody”. A person we’ve never really seen before. I think it helps us immerse ourselves in the character and lore. Example: When I watch a Tom Cruise film, even if I like it a lot, I still see Tom Cruise, and I don’t really ever get past it. For big hollywood films, it’s more or less ok for the actors to be bigger than their characters. But the Doctor shouldn’t ever be upstaged by his actor.

Especially as some trollish behaviour (as seen here) is actually quite normal (eg ask an innocent question).

I’d rather innocent questions were encouraged for more insight, than slammed for being a twat.

I’m quite happy with innocent questions, and am happy to help people out. However, in this case they did need a slap down. I get notified whenever someone new joins, and I always check their first post, just in case. That was their one and only post, right after they joined. Given the obvious bad spelling and factual mistakes (“over 50 years”) they wanted people to jump on it, react to it, which is why I pointed out to everyone that it was trolling as quickly as I could. They’re still a member though. And I’d be happy if they wanted to post something properly, no hard feelings etc.

Smith was ‘my’ Doctor.

@ardaraith – yes, that’s always painful. Sylvester McCoy was ‘my’ Doctor, in his last two series (I was unusual in that ‘my’ Doctor was the fifth Doctor I’d seen – but for me, McCoy completely matched the notion in my head of what the Doctor should be like). I not only lost my Doctor, I lost the entire bloody series.

But it came back. And that’s what I’ll always remember. It came back, with new Doctors; and even though none of them will ever be ‘my’ Doctor again, the show itself came back better than ever. 🙂

In the meantime, have some tea, try a jammy dodger, and make sure you’ve got the DVD’s to hand.

@bluesqueakpip (and @phaseshift) – It does seem entirely plausible that the Doctor will regenerate as a child. It was pointed out that One was young but chose to appear old because of insecurity. With a fresh slate on the horizon, what better start than as a truly confident ‘babe’ – and Clara has the mad child minder skills!

@kibouchi Welcome to the forum. 😀 I agree with you entirely that the actor should be unknown, or at least little known. Eccleston didn’t really do it for me as I had seen him in too many things before. It was always just Eccleston acting as The Doctor. I was aware of Tennant but hadn’t seen him in much so I was able to accept him more. However, with Matt, as he was a total unknown to me, he became The Doctor very easily.

In the same fashion, when I was younger I was aware of Davison having been in All Creatures Great and Small but I was so young I don’t think it mattered to me then. TV was probably still a world of magic. But when McCoy came along he was just too familiar to me from other shows that I found it hard to accept him as anything other than an actor playing The Doctor.

That’s why the whole John Hurt thing may not work for me. But I hope to be surprised.

As we’ve already had mention of Tom Cruise – out of the others on the various lists, who wouldn’t you like to see as the Doc? Personally, I wouldn’t be in favour of Stephen Fry – nothing against him, it’s just I can’t see him in that role. Would still like to see him write an ep though.

Glad you like my bonkers idea of series 8 having a series of multiple Doctors constantly regenerating. I have been thinking about how it might actually work. I think I also suggested that perhaps John Hurt’s Doctor might hang around and be somehow responsible, with a one season arc along the lines of “The Key to Time” or (shudder!) “Trial of a Timelord”. But personally, I would not want those to be used as templates, and the problem with the Hurt Doctor manipulating it does conjure up an image of a rather dark season.

On the other hand, too much comedy really would make the regenerations gimmicky and reminiscent of Moffat’s Comic Relief sketch.

And yet, and yet, I still think it might really work if done well.

Putting my bonkers theorising™ pipe aside, I doubt it will be a kiddie due to the UK child labour laws.  Now that may be wishful thinking on my part, but I couldn’t stand another RoA singing moppet again.  People might slag of Bonnie Langford as a companion, but *ahem* my granny remembered her as a child actress.  She still has palpitations thinking about it.

My suggestions now that I’m faced with a choice between Glenn Hoddle and Bertie Vogts?

Domhnall Gleeson?  Red hair [check]; not too famous but has work experience on telly [check]; been in Harry Potter and therefore slightly familiar to core audience [check].

Now I’d rather have his pop Brendan Gleeson but he’s too famous.

Thinking out of show for a minute or 2, and going back to various conversations with @bluesqueakpip re what Moffat wants to leave as his legacy ie why he wants to stay on after 50th, which in many ways would be a natural finish time. I am therefore assuming that he has new ideas for a regeneration story. And it would be a great way to trial different kinds of Drs without baiting the hardcore fanboys too much.

The discussion mentioned a recent Daily Fail article “Who Should Be the Next Doctor? ANYONE but a Woman…” being its charming headline. I won’t link, because that newspaper has perfected the art of the faux journalism troll in its (unfortunately successful) grubbing for click-rates. You can Google it if you must.

The gist of the argument is that “the Doctor has been a role model for three generations of boys”, providing a brainy alternative to muscle-bound superheroes. I know it’s a troll, but dammit. Presumably girls could only dream of being one of his lovely assistants (and that’s the way it should be).

Actually, the Doctor has been a role model for generations of children. Plenty of girls wanted/ want to be him too. Women have simply, historically, had to become more accustomed that men to fictional cross-gender identification in the sci-fi genre, because most of the heroes of most of the stories have been boys or men.

In fact, it’s broader than that. It’s still the case that when you ask boys and girls who their role models are, boys will name male figures almost exclusively, but girls will name men and women. A girl who says Obama is her role model? No one bats an eyelid. A boy who says Hilary Clinton?

I’m looking forward to a future where that is not the case.

The Sarah Jane Adventures did a fine job on that front.

So yeah (hot damn Daily Fail you’ve made me cross before coffee – I’m such a sucker) but bring on a female Doctor, and why should the Doc, in female form, not continue to be a role model for boys, as for girls?

NB – the offending article does, at least, have the decency to suggest Helen Mirren  for the role. She would ace it.

And yes, agree, it’s better if the actor isn’t better known than the Dr. eg Tom Cruise is great at being Tom Cruise, ditto Stephen Fry (tho I’d dooubt he’s in the frame anyway (agree would be great to get him to write tho – apparently he did, but the timing wasn’t good eg he wrote for 1 Dr/companion and by time they could schedule it, the companion had changed). OTOH John Hurt has a habit of morphing completely into whoever’s he’s portraying.

@scaryb – Amy’s pretty much a commentary on that kind of attitude. She meets the Doctor at an impressionable age, and spends the rest of her childhood only wanting to be the ‘assistant’ to an extraordinary man. She flits from job to job (and we’re shown that she’s very successful at some of her jobs) – almost certainly because of the ‘what’s the use, dear, you’re only going to get married/run off with the Doctor’ mantra that she’s been conditioned to believe.

And then she gets kidnapped by people who see her only of value as a baby factory.

And yet Amy is clearly written as a strong, confident woman who’s obviously achieved in more than one area (a classic children’s story that’s still being read by kids fifty years after it was written, successful model). There’s quite an implication that meeting the Doctor ruined her life. For one thing, it got her stuck in the past…

I’ve heard a lot of rumours about a female Doctor, but I just can’t relate. Since the TARDIS has turned out to be kind of female, the Doctor can’t be female. The two connect so well and complete eachother, and I am afraid this will disappear if the Doctor is a female. It just wouldn’t work.

If we’re going child actor, I would have loved to see Mara Wilson (Matilda – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mara_Wilson) do it. Think she was a genuinely good actor and probably still is but she’s “out of the game” so to speak.

Wouldn’t mind an established actor, but they’d have to be damn good to get past the Tom Cruise factor. I think Robert Carlyle would do n excellent job, he was really good in Stargate Universe (now there’s a show cancelled before its time!)

And speaking of cancelled, Alan Tudyk. If he could do a passable english accent I would LOVE to see him as the Dr!

@claraoo I think the TARDIS and the Doctor’s relationship goes above and beyond the Doctor’s sex.
If anything, I can see a female Doctor being even more flirty with her TARDIS.

I think it’s likely the next Doctor will be another young male thespian, just to spite people who think they can pressure Moffat and the BBC into being PC.

They can’t “win” either way, someone will cry PREJUDICE over the whole thing.

As long as they choose someone who can act AND cares about the role, that’s all I really care about.

Hear, Hear.  Totally agree.  I always get a little stuck at a regeneration – it’s hard to say goodbye BUT that’s what wins me over with each new Doctor.

I understand anyone’s hesitation over the Doctor regenerating into a female, if for no other reason than 11’s adventure with ‘her’ in the body of Suranne Jones – and establishing in ‘The Doctor’s Wife’ that his nickname for his Tardis is ‘Sexy’ – seemed to establish a conservative, traditional relationship of ‘boy-meets-girl[Tardis]’.

This also dates back to ‘School Reunion’ with Tennant’s 10, wherein Rose and Sarah Jane have a lovely conversation – which starts as one-upmanship whilst putative companion rivals, and ends in a total sisterhood understanding of their relationship to the Doctor – where they agree that the Doctor has an hilariously close relationship with his Tardis.

But I think ‘The Doctor’s Wife’, by putting the Tardis’s soul into a female form, is what is making you unsure of a female Doctor in the future.  Why is the Tardis supposed to be female?  (Because Amy said ‘Did you wish, really, really hard?’)  Couldn’t the Doctor be bewitched by his most faithful companion of them all, without a gender being assigned to it?  Couldn’t a female Doctor be utterly besotted with her ‘stolen’ Tardis, without any need for (hetero)sexual tension?
