Ah, I see ET has left the building!
26 May 2013 at 18:49 #11054Quality name!
I think you are probably wrong, but like the idea – I think that dialogue was simply to emphasise the debt he felt to them. “The were….kind” was simply devastating.
26 May 2013 at 18:45 #11053I thought some people would agree with my point, but no, nobody has agreed yet,
That is because you have yet to properly outline your point.
Do so, or troll off.
26 May 2013 at 18:25 #11051, “Kübler-Ross noted that these stages are not meant to be a complete list of all possible emotions that could be felt, and, they can occur in any order.”
Indeedy – each individuals path is personal. A very very lucky few can even go directly to acceptance. A lot suppress the anger for many years.
26 May 2013 at 17:10 #11030Denial
I’ll come back to that…
Anger
We’ve always implicitly assumed that Eccleston was all PTSD and Rose brought him back.
Bargaining
Tennant is bargaining like a boss – from condemning Harriet Jones to dispensing with the The Family of Blood; From the Fires of Pompeii to and giving the Vasta Nerada a choice to….. I’m a God!
Depression
Matt Smith is the brutal realisation that he is alone with his choices; that those with him echo his loss and abandonment from the “Girl Who Waited” to “I Don’t Know Where I Am”.
Acceptance
So one way or another I expect Clara and Hurt!Doctor to be his path to acceptance; and that of course requires first the realisation that he must end the denial.
I’m all about the metaphor, me.
26 May 2013 at 16:58 #11028I think “dumbed down” is one of the laziest phrases in the English language. It is, of course, quite impossible to dumb something up.
So perhaps if you could be clear and specific about what you mean that would look a tad less trollish.
25 May 2013 at 01:56 #10829Back to Grown-Up News – What do people think about the BBC wasting £100 Million?
I think that admitting it was a write off and halting put good money after bad compares very favourably with almost every government procurement of the last 20 years…
25 May 2013 at 00:48 #10816There is no getting away from the fact that JLC is very, very pretty.
(I realise that’s technically on topic, but this is the pub)
How about The Slaughtered Zarbi?
24 May 2013 at 23:32 #10798I’m thinking The Slaughtered Sontaran might be a nice American Werewolf/ Who crossover pub name…
24 May 2013 at 21:10 #10753@Shazzbot – yep, it’s mine
@craig – yeah, Brooker at his best is devastating (see also Bowling for Columbine, which makes essentially the same point).
Re Real Life – I think we have an intelligent and thoughtful enough membership (as well as zero-tolerance of trolling and abuse) to have an “In the Pub” section to complement “On the Sofa”.
24 May 2013 at 19:30 #10741If I may crave your indulgence (and in the absence of a formal “Off-topic” space:
24 May 2013 at 18:59 #10737It was never about the Doctor’s name, it was about what would be done in The Name of The Doctor.
It was not just the ‘secret/ grave is discovered’ phrase that was playing with language…
21 May 2013 at 22:31 #10277Nicely fixed, Sir!
I’ve just noticed the search box at the top doesn’t seem to search the forum. Can it be made to do that? (was a right pain tracking down the Chekhov’s Duck posts)
PS I think WP-SuperCache is a popular load control plugin.
21 May 2013 at 12:47 #10175I said Chekhov’s Duck and Chekhov’s Duck I meant 🙂

21 May 2013 at 09:26 #10152assumes Sexy (who already told us that she chose her Doctor) is controlling Clara to ensure Clara entices Hartnell to the ‘correct’ Tardis.
Why? There is as much basis for assuming cahoots as coercion. And just as Clara always recognises the Doctor, she could equally recognise the correct Tardis to neither cahoots nor coercion are essential.
@davemorris316 – yep. There as all necessary scope for retcon, but canon remains canon.
21 May 2013 at 09:23 #10151@shazbott @blenkinsopthebrave
While Clara suggested Hartnell take the other Tardis, we do not know that he took her advice. You may be right, but there is still ambiguity.
Nonsense. Chekhov’s Duck applies. “The navigation’s knackered…” is the key phrase.
20 May 2013 at 23:45 #10126This one seemed to have more edits than ever before. (That’s probably just my feeling, and I’m more than happy to be proved wrong.) What is going on behind the scenes, between those edits, those repeated get-up-get-out-sit-back-down-again moments? Surely as she grows older, she’s more capable of sitting still for longer?
I think it is more a case of her parents protecting her from the more adult oriented stuff – and maybe that she didn’t fully grasp the Hartnell scene significance (which to us, of course, is a complete fangasm, but to even enlightened Americans might not see quite so obviously much)
20 May 2013 at 23:37 #10124You aren’t the only one (I had Susan as plan b, but it always seemed evident to me that the 50 year gap is between Hartnell and his granddaughter)
20 May 2013 at 22:29 #10115Awesome work from LindaLee there!
20 May 2013 at 21:57 #10113Only trouble is, Clara seems to be assuming the Doctor is kind of her boyfriend at the moment.
Well, to be fair, she is operating with imperfect information. After all, Amy made a confused pass at the Doctor.
Still plenty of room for begating.
But shipping is still evil.
20 May 2013 at 21:03 #10109Well if the Osiris/ Isis parallels continue, then we can expect a child – because when Isis resurrected Osiris she conceived Horus.
And Doc and River begat Clara who begat Susan….
Remember who very good River is at not letting people know what their true relationship is…
19 May 2013 at 12:14 #9767But when the heck did she learn his name??
I am still inclining towards when signing their daughter’s birth certificate….
19 May 2013 at 12:12 #9764Maybe I’m just sulking because I was hoping for a granddaughter revelation. That would have had the most wonderful narrative symmetry across 50 years.
The 50 years aren’t up yet (I think daughter is a much more likely revelation – a mother-daughter bond is a great Riveresque spoiler)
19 May 2013 at 01:26 #9686@craig – just lost a lengthy post because WordPress uses non-standard keystrokes (meaning I accidentally hit the ‘back’ operation). Do you know if there’s a way to get WP to properly cache posts-in-progress (as, for example PHPBB does)?
Also, the bullet format seems non-fucntional
19 May 2013 at 01:23 #9685Huh – bullets didn’t work on that post.
19 May 2013 at 01:16 #9683Some random musing now that I’ve seen it without a 10 min unscheduled break.
“Goodbye sweetie” strikes me as fairly definitive, echoing as it does the many “Hello sweeties”
I’m glad they did undermined River’s FotD sacrifice by have her return corporeally (aka the Flaying of Warren Mears Abomination, for those who have read the S8 Buffy comics;
I think Hurt!Doc fits most naturally between McGann!Doc and Eccleston!Doc as a sort of repressed memory – think of all those WW1 soldiers who never discussed their experiences until VERY later in life);
This makes me wonder if the time War is something rather different to what we have been led to suppose. What if it is a betrayal for which the Doc feels more than just survivors guilt?Other bits and bobs
Glasgow. LOL.
Nice to see Strax get a bit of nuance
Hartnell in colour
Susan
Am leaning a bit more towards Clara is the next Doc theory18 May 2013 at 20:16 #9586John Hurt as Garnish.
The Name of the Doctor!
18 May 2013 at 20:15 #9585S8 officially commissioned to air in either Spring or Autumn 2014 (I suspect the delay was all part of the fever-whipping).
18 May 2013 at 19:52 #9569Ber-limey.
Apart from the 3 mins or so in the middle I missed because MY FUCKING BT BOX CRASHED, that was ace.
17 May 2013 at 22:45 #9498I bet you say that to all the nerds…
17 May 2013 at 18:19 #9464Or it could be that far fewer disc went out than was initially feared.
14 May 2013 at 19:02 #9080Spoilerish speculation
Nothing to see here
move along now
GET OUT

I suspect the thing “River” is warning Clara against is giving the Doctor a glimpse of what the universe would be without him – showing him the “Doctor shape hole” (riffing on the Clarence/ It’s A Good Life thing in the NiS thread). So perhaps “dead River” is a River who never quite made it to the library, but was simply an ordinary woman born to an ordinary couple in a small village near Gloucester…
14 May 2013 at 14:53 #9062(I really mean it–Buffy is in my top 5 of favorite dramas.)
This is true of all right-thinking people.
14 May 2013 at 09:47 #9012@scaryb – oooh, you’re making coffee? Yes please!
14 May 2013 at 09:29 #900714 May 2013 at 09:28 #9006Love the Clara/Clarence (angel) @osakahatter mentioned upstream (Sent by the Tardis? River? Both?)
OI! When I spot something it would be nice to get credit! *mumbles about the attention span of the youth of today. It’s A Wonderful Life my arse ;)*
14 May 2013 at 01:08 #8985Hehe.
Courtesy of IMDB
Clarence: I’m Clarence Oddbody, AS2.
George Bailey: Oddbody… Hey, what’s an AS2?
Clarence: Angel, Second Class.
Set on a snowy Christmas Eve, of course.
Meanwhile, the Alaska Junior entertainment officer…
14 May 2013 at 00:49 #8984@osakahatter – Of course, every time a bell (of St John?) rings and angel wins its wings….
13 May 2013 at 23:28 #8970Somebody must have noticed that before, surely?
13 May 2013 at 23:02 #8967possibly by being shown the Doctor shaped hole in the universe, and seeing who he should be.
By an angel called Clarence?
Um….hang on….
13 May 2013 at 20:11 #8938the Replica Sonic Screwdriver of Harmony
Harmony you say?
13 May 2013 at 16:16 #8928@HTPBDET – quite right. And of course, by spotting Porridge’s secret, Angie was more the companion that Clara, which may or may not prove significant.
13 May 2013 at 13:47 #8912Perhaps Moffat should set up an Emergency Wikipedia Vandalism Squad to post red herrings and falsehoods just so the spoilers get lost in the crowd…
13 May 2013 at 13:22 #8905People should be aware that there is a radio trailer with even more of the apparently-but-probably-not spoilerific Clara-isms than the TV trailer.

12 May 2013 at 22:42 #8813@craig – it might be a good idea to close the site to new registrations for the time being.
12 May 2013 at 22:40 #8812From the Dr Who Facebook page:
We understand that a small number of US fans have received in error their DVD edition of Series 7 Part 2 early. We respectfully ask those fans not to divulge information or post content publicly so that fellow fans who have yet to see the episodes do not have their viewing pleasure ruined.
If everyone keeps the secrets safe until next Saturday we will release a special new clip featuring material of the Tenth AND Eleventh Doctor!
12 May 2013 at 11:51 #8702What did people make of the screen-POV we got several times
Wasn’t that just a cybermite POV?
11 May 2013 at 22:44 #8639@Mephistopheles – I thought the tight skirt thing was a residue of cyber-11 trying to assert before being slapped down. Just a bit of cheeky smut…
I am now rather inclined to a “House, season4” ending (those who haven’t seen it missed a master class in managed and then confounded expectations)
11 May 2013 at 21:33 #8603@chickenelly Yep – think it is the same one – either it’s a lie, or its the macguffin we’ve been watching while the real story occurs just off to one side!
