hm @craig – on the fields of Trenzalore, presuming the Hurt Doctor gets out of the timeline with the 11th and Clara, no one had better ask him who he is.
Clara: “Who are you?”
HurtDr: “I’m the Doctor”
MattDr: “No you’re not; I am. You don’t deserve that name. You can’t use it”
Clara: “So, who are you?”
“I’m…… [insert doctor’s gallifreyan name, leading to silence falling and general “not good stuff” happening].
Clara: “yep, thought it was you; saw you in a book.”
[River descends from above the stage in a machine/chariot and waves everything bad away. General gnashing of fan-teeth]

22 May 2013 at 23:01 #10425good point @jimthefish in terms of size of thread between now and Nov.
Though we have precedence in splitting up threads a month at a time (tNotD1, tNotD2, tNotD3…tNotD7).
or somesuch. But categorising is always tricky due to overlaps and trying to follow multiple (loose) threads.
[sigh]
maybe let’s see if someone will suggest something so bonkersly obvious, we all go “of course…..”
22 May 2013 at 22:53 #10421Great news @craig, thank you.
Its wonderful that though we don’t ‘know’ each other, other than through posts about a TV show, no matter whether you’re just lurking, dipping in with a question or thought, or writing treatises, there’s an honest concern over the health of people here.
Thanks again Craig for the space for that to flourish.
Looking forward to hearing from you again @htpbdet (and a sincere thanks to your nephew for passing on your update).
22 May 2013 at 22:43 #10415hmmmmmm……
[thnnks aloud]
ease of reference after people have posted (good) dissipation of conversation (bad) and not everyone dual posting (human)…..
so, an uneven reference list that might dissipate conversation.
Best be careful if we do this (though not to say a great reference ain’t a bad way to go… but might rely on an owner gathering all the mentions together so that its a good ref. Less a thread and more a reference wiki?)
hmm, can’t spell “thinks” so maybe should leave this “thnnking” lark to more cleverer people….
22 May 2013 at 22:35 #10413phew – got to the end of the ‘main’ thread!
But now looks like activity dissipating out toward the other threads (a natural movement).
[deep breath] Right – onward!!
.
y’know – I’m spending longer reading these posts than watching the actual episodes!

21 May 2013 at 23:03 #10297@scaryb – I’m sure we’re all a bit guardian-tree-huggy to some extent, so shouldn’t we maybe recycle our theories first..?
I mean, I had the Silence guarding the Doctor’s secret…. rather than the Whispermen crashing it.
Ok, I woz wrong, but perhaps the Silence were guarding The Hurt Doctor’s secret and therefore didn’t want it revealed (by 11 getting access to his corpsestream)?(best I can do with the recycling at this time of night after far too much red….)
21 May 2013 at 22:39 #10284now, its a school night, and I really should go back to my hotel room (bedroom), but I’m still in the Departure Lounge, have snuck in to the Rioja, and am idly wondering whether our overlord @craig ever says….
What plaything can you offer me today?”
aw c’mon.
tell me you don’t think this a hundred times a day……
fibbers!
21 May 2013 at 22:24 #10276ah @satsumajoe – that’s wonderful!!
thank you! I’m so glad you liked it.
However, feel free to ditch it for another one, whenever you fancy (no offense will be taken!)
aww, we’re a friendly bunch!
21 May 2013 at 22:20 #10273ah @Shazzbot – indeed – the music thread freezes on me on the ol’ wifi as well (there must be something in the wifi….. hmm, there’s another network available…. eek!).
so, here’s what I gave you.
No surprises methinks!21 May 2013 at 21:50 #10261Hi @tournikate -glad you’re around (just in case they;re any injuries and suchlike; I mean, its a dangerous wifi-world innit?)
;¬)
@jimthefish – there’s a Rejected Theories Pile???!!??!
Is that that mountain I see towering above me??
It needs shoring up!Quick – more theories we can reject!! put them over on the left, near that over-hang!
21 May 2013 at 21:43 #1025621 May 2013 at 21:30 #1025121 May 2013 at 20:51 #10240This is for the wonderful @Shazzbot.
I’ve no idea if its fair, but she did say (on another thread):
“like, totally; egads, I’m reverting to Valley Girl-speak!”
I’m weak, what else could I do?
gag me with a spoon!
21 May 2013 at 20:43 #10238wow – that’s a whole hunk a burning bonkers theorising going on!
I don’t want to name everyone who I agreed with as I’ll leave someone out, so I’ll just mention @MTGladwell, @davemorris316 and @craignixon (who came up with The Hurt Doctor siding with the Daleks – now that’s a great theory) as I haven’t said Hi yet. I had similar thoughts but nowhere near as cogent (and not the siding-with-the-daleks to avert the insanity of the Timelords…. oooh!).
Obviously everyone else I loved your posts too (but you’re all barking).
😉
oh and the poetic @arkleseizure – lovely analogy of the Hurt Doctor like an ox-bow lake!
anyway, @Shazzbot – I’ll stand (a bit awkwardly as I’m a fully grown man) on your (giantess) shoulders…
“when the Doctor reads Simeon’s business card, he says something like ‘hmmm, Great Intelligence, rings a bell’ when he should have totally (like, totally; egads, I’m reverting to Valley Girl-speak!) remembered.”
Well, of course if the GI and Clara are constantly rinsing (was that MTGladwell??) backwards and forwards through his timeline, then the GI had wiped itself from the Doctor’s memory at that point. Clara-in-the-past (Zelig-Clara) hadn’t resolved that GI-ntervention.
And that’s how the back-canon can forever be “ah, well, of course the GI has just done something 100 years ago to cause that and Clara’s not stopped it… tsk”.21 May 2013 at 20:29 #10235HI @blenkinsopthebrave and @craig – yep, I’ve had that behaviour on my iPad (if it helps, its an old iPad in case it doesn’t happen on shinier ones).
If there’s no workaround (ie its an Apple thang) the way I try to get round it is to hit the chrome in safari, which sends me to the top of the page, and then scroll back down. Tiresome and doesn’t always work, but…. a minor annoyance overall.
btw am trying to create my own Lounge environment with a good red, cheese and moosic. But still a bit amateur I’m afraid.
;¬)
21 May 2013 at 13:35 #10190ah ha! @wolfweed!!
I just logged in to ask if you’d seen any Zelig-Claras!
or is that Clara-Zeligs?
good work!
20 May 2013 at 07:24 #9960@moebiussoulsby – hey no worries! (which idea btw??!)
This is the thread for creativeness of any sort – it was WhoHar that asked for new fictional villains, so I’m mainly riffing on that on this thread!
Your idea has a great plot device and possibilities – to be honest it would be just as welcome on the tNotD thread IMO. (I guess it depends whether you think of it as a bonkers theory or a plot line, or closer to fan fiction)
Anyway, thanks for being polite (and zero offence!)
19 May 2013 at 12:53 #9782methinks there’ll have to be a minisode or somesuch before the 50th.
Just can’t see how you’d have a 50th which will be seen by people who didn’t watch series 7.2 , start with the Doctor trapped inside his own timeline.
but then again, maybe they’ll have 10 starting in the 50th and as @ardaraith suggests, 11 will ‘pop out’ in 10’s timeline (along with The Hurt Doctor).
actually, that kinda works….
18 May 2013 at 22:22 #9647Can’t wait to hear @htpbdet‘s thoughts (whether i agree or disagree I enjoy hearing them)
Hope you get here soon (health is more important than anything, but we have health to enjoy stuff, so hope you’re able to get here soon).
18 May 2013 at 21:42 #9631oh, Smith knows what Hurt did, he just hates what he did.
Haven’t we all done something we regret?
But he hates that history remembers that what he did, is remembered as being done by “the Doctor”, the persona that he’d rather be, and be remembered for.
18 May 2013 at 21:19 #961918 May 2013 at 21:16 #9615so, is Hurt the Doctor in the same way that the Valeyard is the Doctor?
ie if The Doctor is a title of “[galifreyan called x]”, then is Valeyard and Hurt also aspects of “x”?
oh, I don’t know and I don’t care much(!) – I just LOVED this and looking forward to much more of this!!
elated that JLC is here for next year (she’s smart and that makes her as attractive as her physicality) and really hope that Smith stays (unlikely that he’d transform into Hurt lets face it!).hm, still not really giving much in terms of thinking…… erm…..
nice echo of “I’m not scared of graveyards”
18 May 2013 at 19:49 #9564handclappingly good.
I actually whooped. grown man, whooping.
[sigh]
(what, you expected analysis?!?!!!???!!?)
18 May 2013 at 16:30 #9541ok – I had avatar envy after seeing the updates (great work y’all) so (though I now realise at the size it appears next to posts its farrrrr too small to notice) I’ve doctored my avatar*.
(yes yes pun was unavoidable!).
and @pufferfish – I love your avatar too!
feel free to post whenever the fancy takes you!(*may have to try again!)
18 May 2013 at 14:58 #9533right then…. finally some more returns!
@phaseshift – you sir a a great man for the Spaghetti Western Orchestra! Brilliant stuff! and yes, I watched all 5 parts.
lots and lots of things that it made me think of, as I smiled my way through it (and for everyone else, its fun but done by very good musicians).
But for the bottle playing skit (Chi Mai) I can only thnk of this great piece of bottle playing:
18 May 2013 at 11:58 #9513Hi @htpbdet – just wanted to echo the feelings from everyone here; hope everything goes as well as it can, and that you can get back to good health. Like everyone else, I’ve really enjoyed your posts – they’re personal, considered and informative.
Sorry to everyone else – been avoiding most threads due to spoiler fear, but couldn’t resist the comments thread just now and realise I had misjudged and that things were fine.
Should’ve kept lurking (though I’m sure my occasional Drolling is never missed! 😉 ).Now, back to the Music thread and listening to more LCD (thanks @craig)!
15 May 2013 at 22:34 #9277hey @rob – I’ve another monster/ villain if you’re interested!
How’s about a dark Doctor; an evil side to him, but with a memory-loss twist.
This evil Doctor, a regeneration after the 12th, is evil and the audience know this, but the character doesn’t – he can’t remember that he’s evil!
We (the audience) keep flinching knowing he’ll remember, or another character will say something that will remind him who he is.
Finally he looks at the label on a cord that has been hanging in full view around his neck and thinks
“oh, hold on, that’s a name. Is that my name?? am I..? Am I..?
[eyes open in wonder)…
yes – he is
.
The Lanyard!
.
.
(coat? wearing it….)
15 May 2013 at 22:20 #9275btw @craig – that LCD Soundsystem track is an awesome track!
thanks for the link/ reminder/ kick in the shin to watch it as I knew of them, but hadn’t really ever listened to them (more fool me)!
15 May 2013 at 22:12 #9273he he – couldn’t agree more @craig!
Oddly(?) enough I looked back at some of the music posted so far, to think of some returns, and the below just made some kind of sense, if only because i’m now laughing at it far more than I did as a slightly not comprehending pre-adolescent, but also so I can have a laugh with @juniperfish who I think was amused that we struggle to relate the choons to Who related stuff.
well…. all I can say is, if you look at the programme titles (2 vortexes), and ever since we had red/blue theories on this very forum, this song has resonated (strange @phaseshift didn’t pick it… 🙂 ).
15 May 2013 at 21:01 #9267Hey @chickenelly, nice Bowie link.
And yes, raised a smile and made me think of this… no idea why;¬)
13 May 2013 at 00:23 #8841wow! as if to answer @trudawg in action rather than in drawn out (and rather naff) words from me – great video from Phaseshift and then a great reply by Craig!
and not one-upmanship (grrr Juniperfish shakes fist with a smile!) but a sharing of great music.
oh, and btw the one thing (the only thing?) we don’t do on this thread is discuss the current programme.
there are enough threads for that (and it sounds like spoilers are hitting the fans in every sense) so here’s a respite from the (shit)storm.
now, I may well listen to Simon & Garfunkel again because its, well… beautiful!
12 May 2013 at 23:08 #8820Hi @trudawg – erm, well, this isn’t really my thread, but it is a lovely example of how things evolve here.
On another thread about TV memories, I casually asked if we could also exchange music(al) memories.@phaseshift (kneels before the Master) then created this thread – I didn’t ask for it, but I really do love it!
Now, I’ll take umbrage(!) 😉 with @juniperfish in that one element of the thread (the ‘ping pong’) is not one-upmanship, but based on the wonderful Radio Ping Pong by Charlie Gillett. Basically he invited in a guest to his radio show and brought in records of his own, and then in a unique way discovered more about his guest by having the guest play a song and him respond with something it made him think of from his own collection. Listeners learnt more about both people and some wonderful music than a strict interview format. I wish I’d heard more of them than the couple I chanced across.
But basically, just post a song that means something to you and say why, OR link to a song that comes to mind because of another song on the thread, OR link to a song that has a vague relation to sci-fi or Who…. or…. erm… oh yes, link to the song that was number one when you were born.
OR suggest another riff we can play with (as you’ll probably tell from the wonderful @juniperfish, we’re all quite playful here!).
Your serve!
11 May 2013 at 21:28 #8600Hi all, actually, though I mentioned about posting spoilers in the NiS thread, I’m probably on the “bit precious” end of the scale when it comes to spoilers, so rather than spoil any fun, I’ll probably stick to the sofa and music threads until after the next show.
As I say, I’m on the stick-fingers-in-the-ears-and-not-watch-trailers end of the spectrum, so don’t want to skew anything!
oh – and Hi @trudawq!
11 May 2013 at 21:09 #8590btw – I don’t watch trailers (probably like @scaryb) so can we treat even trailers, Radio Times, Guardian publicity shots – ie everything as Spoilers and for that forum thread?
That way there’s no mistakes – leave every other thread for well thought through, bonkers theories.
otherwise I’ll stick to the music thread until after the episode (which is a shame, but I’ll jump in after the show!)
11 May 2013 at 21:05 #8587@bluesqueakpip et al – I guess we just need to hold our breath for when Clara doesn’t do what she’s told, saves the day/Dr and sets up classic companion behaviour for next year!
Its gonna be fun!
11 May 2013 at 20:55 #8583Just to say, I really liked the portrayal of the emperor – very understated yet affecting.
but (oh I hate myself for this but) it took the great Warwick and good stuff from Smith and JLC to offset the teenage girl’s acting.
sorry.
btw – @bluesqueakpip may I just say that you are fantastic in not saying who won the final!
Not sure if you’re in to sports etc but the ‘spoiler’ aspect is probably more important in sport than anywhere, as its a live event.
You’re fantastic in other ways(!), but this was pure ‘thinking of others’!
ta11 May 2013 at 20:19 #8572agree with @htpbdet (as ever!) – there’s always plot holes in programmes (eg why didn’t the baddie just kill the hero when he had him at his mercy; how come the rocket didn’t fry them etc etc etc).
But they only matter (to me) when the overall quality of the show is poor and then all of a sudden the suspension-of-disbelief is broken and only then do I think “oh, but this is silly!”
and I rarely get this with Who – NiS was great fun! (and I’d rather have fun than die nit-picking!)
11 May 2013 at 19:59 #8570loved this one – not had much time to digest, but Gaiman really does have a great feel for stories that appeal to the teen (in us all).
mainly by not talking down (which says a lot about him).
11 May 2013 at 16:08 #8553ok, here’s something for @phaseshift who’s just commented on Crimson about the “Doctor-as-god” narrative.
(apologies for all this music but I’m just avoiding spoilers!)
11 May 2013 at 15:01 #8536So, @juniperfish‘s posts waaayyyyyy up the page, had a distinctly hippy flava (and no problems with that!!).
Been trying to think of something that has some mention of space etc, feels similar but isn’t just yet-another-hit-from-the-era.
So, thought a bit of Flaming Lips might be appropriate – hope you like it!
(if you do, there’s a pretty good pitchfork film of the making of the album. But pitchfork did an even better film of the early albums by Belle and Sebastien who are gorgeous!! Its a great film and if you like your music indie-folky gentle and bittersweet, then you can do no better!)
11 May 2013 at 14:47 #8533ok – not directed at anyone particularly… but I was thinking of songs for each episode.
Not just which song featured in an episode, but a tune that might be brought to mind by the episode, or something jokey or whatever. For instance… when I saw tBoSJ and then JttCotT I thought of this great tune (from a great album seared into my childhood memory as it was one of the 2 great albums that either my sister or brother had bought):
“I read her diary…
she read my letters…”
brave heart, Clara…
11 May 2013 at 14:38 #8532ok @scaryb – you mentioned before ‘great female voices’, so I just had to reply with this.
and of course it has echoes of conversations on the Crimson thread and elsewhere as to the poetry between myth/religious beliefs and science.
11 May 2013 at 12:05 #8516hey @scaryb – thanks for those!
The Odetta clip had a ‘related’ clip on You tube of Sonny Boy Williamson singing Nine Below Zero.
Now, on the other Crimson thread we’ve been talking about how the internet “changed everything” and it kinda applies for me here as well.
When I first listened to him I just had one CD and one or two pics of him on it and that is all I ever pictured in my mind. It never occurred to me to look in books for other pictures.
Now, after seeing your clip, I’ve seen him play for the very first time! I never knew he was a performer and not just a great player.
The internet not only changes access to stuff but shapes our attitude as well. If I was starting out now, I wouldn’t be saving money to buy music – my expectation would be to access anything I want at the touch of a keyboard. But this is the music thread so I’l leave the socieatal stuff to those that know more about it on the other thread…!
thanks for the link – now to find a reply….
11 May 2013 at 11:41 #8512@scaryb – completely with you on spoilers. Haven’t even looked at the Nightmare in Silver thread (and won’t until after the show).
If I see one here I’ll, I’ll…. I’ll go back to my more sinister avatar!! (or thcweam and thcweam and thsweam as an old assistant wouldn’t have said!).
But I have a hunch that Clara will save the Doctor with a tear (to melt the sliver of ice in his heart).
[yep, this from the “Spartacus” guy, so I’m obviously a massive ham!]
.
or RTD
10 May 2013 at 22:09 #8474cheers @craig – appreciate the reply.
as I say, you bothered and we’re grateful!
Now….. onward with the bonkers theorising!
WE NEED BRILLIANTLY DUMB IDEAS!!
Clara as the Corsair – holy heck – there’s life in the theorising yet!!
10 May 2013 at 21:53 #8470my thoughts on a female doctor…
To be honest, I don’t see the Doctor as particularly male. So I see zero issues with a female doctor (I also love the way they’ll simply cast whoever they think nails the audition).
But, though JLC could have been the Doctor, I can’t see how they’ll now make her the next Doctor and if they do then I think they’ve hobbled her terribly.
For her to be a “companion” or “assistant” is to fulfil a very specific role – for her then to become The Doctor is like an assistant manager taking over a manager’s role. Its just nigh on impossible to do as well as your ‘boss’.
If they’re going to do it, they have to bite it off and give it to [insert strong female actor here – Julia Davis??].now…. Julia Davis and JLC as her assistant?
I’d watch!
(and I deliberately said “assistant” – not “companion” – stop sniggering at the back).
10 May 2013 at 21:29 #8469favicon material..?
or just the funniest thing you’ve seen today?

no credit to me – link here to the page
8 May 2013 at 22:18 #8273@thommck – completely agree (but for other reasons) – I think it’ll be mainly standalone, as for most viewers this will be their first viewing of Who (for quite a while!).
It will leave them cold if there’s loads of “what? why did that happen? But why do they care about…. what? where did they come from?”
mind you, I guess some episodes… (i kid, i kid).
;¬)
8 May 2013 at 21:05 #8265@craig – this is just because I’m not sure you get why we’re so grateful….
Yes, you do this (or similar) for a living and may even have done this before (for fun).
BUT
You bothered to do this – you spotted that some people wanted to carry on the craic from the closed Guardian blog and so you put the hours in to sort create a space that you had no idea if anyone would use.
Could’ve been completely fruitless effort. But you thought about others and did something rather than go “ah well.. I’ll go to that other forum”.
That’s why we’re grateful and that’s possibly why this is a space for people that think more about the reader rather than themselves when posting.
I don’t want to over-do that (I mean, I mainly make flippant, silly puns; have no insights into Who and am just having fun with puzzles and now music thanks to @phaseshift and everyone here). BUT, where else does a forum agonise over “will this post spoil it for others?” as opposed to “hey hey I’m clever, look at me I found a spoiler!!”.
Both are fun and have their place, but here we’ve separated them because… we’re more concerned with the reader, not ourselves.
Oh, forgive me, I’m prattling on, but this is really just a fumbling attempt to explain our gratitude, and at the same time, explain why I like it here so much.
apologies for the digital ink but thanks @craig and thanks to everyone – cheers.
