The Trailer – Discuss it here

by

The trailer for The Day of The Doctor is now on the official BBC site. So it no longer counts as a spoiler, although some people may still not want to see it.

Let’s try and keep discussion of it here if possible.

  1. @JimTheFish – is it the scooter from Bells of SJ, or the scooter from Idiot’s Lantern? The helmet seems to be the white one David Tennant was wearing, rather than the black one Matt Smith was wearing.

  2. bonkers theory but with the zygons being in this could the big bad be a doctor who is being impostered by a zygon

i know this is sounds stupid but with the trailer saying he nneeds to face himself etc it may work out

also how do people think the regen limit will be addressed

  3. Hmmm… if this adventure is placed in the gap between the Special in Dubai and End of Time, the’no, you really don’t’ comment by Smith to Tennant could well account for the Tennant Doctor’s state of near-funk at the thought of regeneration in End of Time. I think I’ve said before that the Farewell Tour would be a lot more explicable if it’s a ‘remember me the way I was’ tour.

Especially if the Tennant Doctor ends up not knowing how things pan out and has to bow out at a moment of apparent disaster. The clip suggests he’s quite happy to meet his future self – cut ‘forward’ to End of Time and he’s terrified of regenerating.

  4. @craig or @phaseshift or any mod who’s still awake. Could you edit @2ndand11th‘s last post to remove the spoilers? Thank you.

@2ndand11th – the rules of this forum are that any spoilers are ONLY to be posted in the spoiler thread, which is a thread especially set up to discuss … well, spoilers.

Spoilers are not to be posted anywhere else, even with a spoiler warning and spoiler space.

    Many thanks.

  5. @shazzbot

Also, fez … Amy’s glasses … has 11 just left Central Park?

Pretty sure he’s got the waistcoat and prince edward jacket on which puts it post Angels Take Manhattan.  However, your comment got me thinking – I remember there’s been some discussion about where in D10’s timeline this story would be taking place (and I’m guessing post Waters of Mars given that Elizabeth 1st was stood behind him whilst the 2 docs compared glasses), but have we thought about where in D11’s timeline this would occur?

Personally, I’ve been working off the assumption that the special would follow on from NoTD, but what if this was an earlier adventure we haven’t seen yet – could this explain Clara’s faint in the timestream?  She meets the HurtDoctor for the first time in the special, never finds out he’s the Doctor, and then faints when she finally finds out that guy they were hindering/helping/generally afraid of was actually the Doctor?  Depending upon when it occurred, it could also explain the ‘So that’s who…’ comment in JTTCOTT.

It would also set the Christmas special up to start in the timestream, at Trenzalore…

    @blenkinsopthebrave –

A couple of things: Rose is with the Hurt Doctor (but will meet 9 for the first time?) Timey wimey.

No shots of Rose and 10 together. Maybe they won’t actually be together in the show (we have just assumed they will be). Perhaps she is only with the Hurt Doctor for Bad Wolf reasons.

Well, following that trailer, I’m upping my guess on the other forum from ‘long shot’ that Rose and D10 wouldn’t join the story at the same time, to fairly likely.  Incidently, it was your questioning the Bad Wolf graffiti in the poster that set me off thinking that at all – that it either hinted at a D9 era Rose or a warning of Rose returning from the alt universe ala Turn Left.  But the former seemed unlikely without Chris Eccleston, and the latter has been done.  In Turn Left.  Maybe she’s coming back as a personification of the time vortex?

    ‘The moment is coming’

    ‘I’m ready’

I know all the indicators with clothing and TARDIS design are placing the HurtDoctor between 8 and 9, but this comment just really made me think older Doctor.  He’s finally ready for something he’s been waiting for all his life(/lives).  And someone he once knew is telling him that it’s time.  Of course, D11’s ‘There’s one life that I’ve tried very hard to forget’ is further evidence to the contrary, so can’t wait to see how this pans out.

    @Bluesqueakpip

Hmmm… have they brought in the Eccleston Doctor by default? He doesn’t appear, but as @Blenkinsopthebrave suggests, Rose is brought in via Bad Wolf.

Okay, that would make a theme. The Tennant Doctor – at the end of his incarnation. The Eccleston Doctor – at the end of his incarnation. And the Smith Doctor – at the end of his incarnation.

I wonder if whatever they need to do will slowly but surely kill them, so it needs to be towards the end of their incarnation anyway.  Wasn’t there a plan that if Tennant had stayed for one more year he’d have been slowly dying throughout S5?  Or did I imagine that?  Perhaps it’s playing on that idea.

On a similar vein, didn’t someone posit a theory that the Doctor’s prior incarnations were under attack?  Perhaps all the Doctors up to 9 have already been erased hence Rose being left as the Eccleston substitute?  That would also tie with D10 seeming to be standing guard between some past threat and the present (i.e. D11)

  6. @Bluesqueakpip @ScaryB @Shazzbot

Did I miss the spoilers? Have they been dealt with?

@2ndand11th You are at a university (I won’t say which one but I know from your email address) yet you write like an idiot, without proper spelling, punctuation or grammar, and have now posted a spoiler or two.

You have all the hallmarks of on on-topic troll. You’ve had your fun and, oh, how you must be laughing. Aren’t we a fun target?

Yet you’re at a university, the best time of your life, and have no one, no one at all, to go out with on a Saturday night. So you decided to have your fun here instead? How sad… I actually feel quite sorry for you.

Give me a reason not to delete you? Just one will do.

It better be well written. With, you know, punctuation and stuff.

  7. @Arkleseizure And you used to have a lovely cartoon face! Now that that dark frown is telling me to do it, I don’t see how I can’t. 😀

I’ll sleep on it, but I think you’re right. I think we’ll survive without new members for the next two weeks, especially if they’re like the ones we got today.

  8. Hi,

I’m sorry, but am I really the only one curious about the voice talking to the other three Doctor’s stating  “I’m looking for the Doctor? Right at the very end of the trailer?

Like the voice is really familiar, and with stuff like this it’s what you can’t see that is important. Any amount of money says that it sounds ridiculously like the 6th Doctor… Does anyone else have any theories to add to that?

  9. How utterly exciting!  @ScaryB – you mention the painting.  Remember the little book, Summer Falls?  That novel was like a manual on how to defeat the Lord of Winter.  Barnabas (the Doctor like character) did it with the help of three devices and a collection of companions.  The book centers around  an “INTERACTIVE ” painting.  Matt said the 50th had to do with painting(s), and now we see the painting of Gallifrey!

And @Craig, Clara using “River’s”  vortex manipulator reminds me of her cheeky line at the end of TNoTD.  She says,

RIVER: I was mentally linked with Clara. If she’s really dead, then how can I still be here
    DOCTOR: Okay, how?
    RIVER: Spoilers. Goodbye, sweetie.

Oh, I am beside myself with excitement!

I do wonder though…. was it made clear that what Rose took into herself was the TARDIS essence, like Idris did? If so, was she acting as the TARDIS or as Rose?  And when Clara stepped into the Doctor’s time stream, was the TARDIS woven into that stream, as well?  Did Clara scatter, like the words Bad Wolf scattered in time and space?  Like the story written on the leaf?

Ah, it’s great to be back here!

  10. Looking at the trailer I think there is only one prediction which we, the collective minds of this forum, have made, that will prove correct. Moffat will pull something out of his magician’s hat which no one could have predicted but on reflection, is/was completely obvious. I am still feeling a little overwhelmed and can only echo Matt at this stage. It clearly has something to do with paintings. Will have to watch the trailer again and again before any flashes of inspiration occur me thinks.

    Cheers

    Janette.

  11. @craig Thanks for the second trailer. Just back from dinner (endured a totally non-Doctor conversation. I do not know how I got through it).

Strangely, there seemed to be more in the first trailer! But…at 0.18 are those Time Lords? I think they might be.

So, here we are, after two trailers, and practically no closer to predicting what is going to happen. Which is brilliant. Why? Because it gives us carte blanche to keep coming up with totally insane theories for the next two weeks!

  12. Looks like I may have to change the majority of my predictions for the 50th based on this trailer.

The main things I am taking away are:

    1. More of the Time War than I expected.

    2. Bit more of the Zygons than I expected.

    3. Rose mentions “The Moment”, so kudos to @Timeloop

  13. Also, there’s that VO “…I’ve had many faces…” and who is on screen right at that moment? Clara. Make of that what you will my friends, make of that what you will.

  14. And that line from Doc10: “Oh, you’ve redecorated, I don’t like it” is a nod to The Three Doctors I think, and also to Doc11’s comment when he first turns up at Craig’s new house in Closing Time.

Apologies for scatty multi posts, brain has gone into overdrive.

  15. oh, my! what exciting things i’ve found posted here tonight!! tried to avoid trailers, and spoilers… but to no avail! so much going on, and only, what, 12 more days to go?

anyway, (i know i might be hoping for too much, but) in the second trailer, @ about the :25 second mark… as hurt’s doctor finishes the line, “great men are forged in fire, it’s the privilege of lesser men to light the flame,” there is a scene with three figures entering a doorway, with a long hallway coming towards the viewer (and the lights come on, revealing alcoves to either side, with covered figures in them)…

maybe it’s only a functionary (someone from elizabeth I’s court, for example), but the first figure’s silhouette looks strikingly like paul mcgann to me! (the hair most of all…)

    i know it’s not, i know it’s not, i know it’s not!!!

but, wouldn’t it be fantastic if it were?! (but it can’t be, it can’t be, it can’t be!!!)…

i didn’t think i could get any more excited than i was a couple of nights ago, when i purchased my ticket for the 3d movie on november 25th, but by golly, i’m going to have a tough time getting to sleep tonight!

    🙂

  16. Oooh hoo hoo! *rubs hand together*

The trailers do look good (about time they made an appearance).  As I’ve mentioned before, the multiple doctor episodes were always my favourite as a nipper.  I wonder if there indeed is only three of them in the 50th (ie if @geoffers eagle eyes will prove correct). However if there are only three Doctors, I’ve got to say I’m really looking forward to Tennant’s appearance.  True, I was glad to see the back of him at the time, principally due to those last ‘specials’ but I’ve forgotten all that now.

From piecing together various theories/comments above, with bits from the trailer my initial bonkers theories of what may happen in the 50th are:

    1) The painting we are shown in the National Gallery referred to as ‘Elizabeth’s credentials’, is this echoing the Van Gogh painting from Elizabeth 10 in Pandorica Opens?

    2) Are the Doctors back in the pocket universe again in Hide?  There’s that flashing circular thingummyjig plus being chased through some woods (although admittedly it is a common trope).

  17. @The Krynoid man,

thanks for the suggestion, but I went back and checked, it is a slow motion shot of John Hurt but he is not actually talking, and it takes place during a separate scene then the 10 and 11’s reply based on the background. The voice at the end it quite different from when we actually see and hear John Hurt talking, and he does turn around as if surprised when we hear that line, same as the other two. It’s someone else.

  18. Oh and…

    Two Kate’s=two timelines?

“I remember it…almost” cut to Earth looking like it might be about to have a Tardis go all ‘splodey over Leadworth?

    And, erm…

    SQUUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. @Mihenna I suggest you clean out your ears.  It’s unmistakably John Hurt’s voice.

@Chickenelly Yay, great to have you back. @Bluesqueakpip has a great theory that it’s Eliz 1 and there’s an assassination plot afoot (possibly by the Zygons!)

    @Pedant

    SQUUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mwuhuhuh! Welcome to the dark side 😈

  20. @Wolfweed

    Nicely done Mr W

Since you’ve presumably spent a fair bit of time close-up with the images – what do you think of the silhouetted figs (under the voiceover of  “Great men are forged on fire…”?  TimeLords maybe? (in robes, but no collars) (Thinking about prev theories that he was a policeman, or  a judge, or some part of the establishment)

And does HurtDr see himself as a “great man” or as the “lesser man” who lights the flame?

  21. @ScaryB – I did wonder if the silhouetted figures were from The End of Time – that maybe they’ve taken the shot of James Rassillon etc walking into the council chamber and CGI’d it with a new background.

  22. At 0.50: “I remember this…almost remember.”

Still with faulty memory? Why? Has the impact of the GI in his timescreen not been completely fixed? Could the GI be involved, along with everything else that the trailer promises?

    Lots of questions, no answers.

btw, the Time Lord at 0.18 walks and has the gait of Timothy Dalton (of course, that could be me reading too much into a one second glimpse).

  23. I tried to comment on the trailer last night but was hit by the curse of PAYG Broadband and ran out of credit (that’ll teach me to check my balance more often). Really looking forward to TDotD – I wonder if we’ll see Doc10 and Elizabeth I get married as mentioned in TEoT?

I did make one prediction about the trailer that came true on Post 19211. @Shazzbot, you may want to make sure there’re no liquids in the vicinity of your keyboard before you click on the link 😉

Glad I purchased those incontinence pants now 🙂

  24. @Craig – Thanks. I gave myself 3 hours to make it. Most of that was editing the sound to a roughly tolerable level due to movie maker limitations (I had to bury the original music with the new track).

@ScaryB – Yes, is Hurt a great or lesser man?

  25. @FatManInABox – I’d forgotten about that!  ‘Just where the heck do you think my keyboard is?’  😆

The Armed Maniacal American Maniac sadly had to be trotted out again last night.  I know you enjoy her appearances but with the recent site closure she’ll be left in the barn hopefully for a few weeks.

  26. @Wolfweed I love Sony Vegas. Movie Studio Platinum 12 is only £52. It’s so easy to use and miles better than Movie Maker. If you get the suite for £85 you also get an audio editor, which may have helped speed things up.

  27. @Craig– Thanks for the tip. I quite enjoy wangling it (like the Dr feeding the 5000 with a ball of twine & a paper clip) but will upgrade one day if I decide to take it a bit more seriously. Have you made any Who vids?

@Bluesqueakpip – If that’s so, will Jimmy Rassilon get a repeat fee?
