…it’s taken me ages to read all the above, however it’s given me time to cogitate on some of my theories which (I admit) are a bit different to everyone else’s.
First of all *chucks a figurative bucket of cold water on double Doctor theory*
I don’t think there are two Doctors in the pocket universe. Sure there are fast cuts, but that’s for atmospheric reasons and to show that time is running strangely there. He picks up the bow tie from the ground where it fell after the doors he tied it to and the house they were in evaporated when the link was broken.
*lights pipe*
1) Clara is an incarnation of the clever snow/water which the GI was cooking up in the pond in the Snowmen episode. As the Doctor says in the Akhaten episode, (something along the lines of) molecules form and keep forming to create a person who is unique. In this case the opposite keeps happening, they keep forming to create the same person – Clara. Clara falls into the snow at the end of the episode, ideal time for replication if you ask me and as the human body is mostly water, those molecules are GI in origin.
2) There have been at least two characters who have been empty vessels as it were, who then mimic what is being said to them. The governess in the Snowmen and the spoonheads in Bells of St John. Both were GI in origin. Does Clara have this trait? Of course she did repeat what the Doctor told her to say in Cold War to the Ice Warrior, and had a weird turn of phrase in Hide ‘I’m not happy’ which could be echoing what Mrs tree trunk monster was thinking *note to self, needs work*. However it could explain why she managed to hoover up all that information when she was uploaded to the cloud network in BoSJ.
3)The slither of ice in the Doctor’s heart is surely to do with the GI? Or, perhaps the empath has got it wrong and it is Clara who has the ice heart?
*puffs on pipe looking pleased with herself*
21 April 2013 at 08:55 #6242what do you mean, still “clinging on” to the bow-ties theory
<glares glassily out of fishy dalekising eye-stalk>Well it has been three series now… *ducks down and hides behind sofa*
21 April 2013 at 08:46 #6241After second viewing and a night’s sleep…
The second half of the series seems to be shaping up nicely, next week also looks good. Still thought the second episode was a bit ropey but I’ll forgive it as Cross wrote a corker this week.
It does appear that particular sci-fi concepts are being flagged up (I do like a list as you all know):
1) Multiple or parallel universes
2) Multiple incarnations of the same person
3) Love not ending/surviving across time [mentioned twice this week]
4) Family relations, mostly grandchildren & grandparents
5) Glass shards or shattering on the posters
Combining nos.1 & 5, puts me in mind of the imagery that the Doctor uses when describing the Cybermen trying to break into this universe in Army of Ghosts. He demonstrates it on a plate glass window.
My pet theory this series is that the above refers to what will happen in the 50th anniversary episode, and most may indicate the use of multiple doctors in the episode – ie Eleven switching between universes to make it happen. Admittedly we already know that there are at least two Doctors in the 50th, but just as the ‘eggs’ motif we were spotting in the first half meant Easter, I think that the Moff is playing the long game by adding more catnip for us fans to speculate ahead.
*lights pipe and strokes chin* Hmmmm
21 April 2013 at 08:24 #6237Hello @blenkinsopthebrave
We wondered where you’d got to. Alas your Kennedy theory seems to have run out of steam since you’ve been gone, although @juniperfish is still clinging onto the two bowties theory.
I’ve not come up my pet theory this series, although I have a few ideas….
20 April 2013 at 21:25 #6191…back again after another spot in the episode.
I must admit, I haven’t been overly keen on the idea of Clara as a future incarnation of the Doctor, but have a look at iplayer at 19m 48s. The position of Clara’s watch is just how Matt’s Doctor wears his.
Mind you, it could have just slipped round.
Back to watch some more…
20 April 2013 at 21:19 #6190…still watching the episode and got to the bit about the lack of umbrella stand. As it comes just after the bit about Clara saying the Tardis doesn’t like her, could it be that it is the Tardis itself that takes it away? The Tardis will have spotted Clara with her umbrella so whips it away to annoy her further.
20 April 2013 at 20:56 #6186Just rewatching the episode and a thought came to mind. Didn’t Matt say that a clue to the 50th was ‘paintings’. There are quite a few around the mansion in Hide.
Pause button at the ready…
20 April 2013 at 18:32 #6152Best episode of the series so far, but spoiled it by showing the badly made monster at the end. Just nipping over to the Grauniad to see what’s happening…
19 April 2013 at 19:06 #6079…La la la la *fingers in ears and hands over eyes to avoid spoilers currently being talked about on t’other page*
Anyway, just watched Cold War again and I don’t think David Warner’s character will be making a reappearance. His conversation with Clara seems, on second viewing, just a way of distracting her from what is happening as she is clearly beginning to freak out.
Oh yes, and Hide next week looks like it takes some of its retro look from the ‘Stone Tape’, another for geek fans(i) (Gatiss I think was a fan of that programme too).
footnote (i) Granny chickenelly told me about this as of course I’m too young to remember…
17 April 2013 at 21:42 #5981Re: disappearances which look like they might be significant
Is it possible that when Clara tries to get into the Tardis she can’t because the Doctor is inside with the door locked? He might be watching (testing her again) to see what she does. He pops up again when he sees she is making the right decision – ie being nice to the kiddie.
Not come to any conclusions re: Clara’s fainting fit in Cold War, but if Clara is some kind of replicant computer gubbins (technical term) maybe getting wet makes her short circuit.
Hmmm…*scratches chin…*
Speaking about disappearances, our lack of interaction with the Grauniad blog is possibly why it now seems like a moan fest. Our contributions balanced it out. Oh yes, when I last checked there were a paltry 15 comments on the Pertwee episode blog.
14 April 2013 at 21:02 #5595…speaking about songs placed in Doctor Who which relate to 1981, what about ‘Tainted Love’ which appears all the way back in ‘End of the World’? Britney Spears also appears, but I’m ignoring that…
13 April 2013 at 22:22 #5421Re: string
What did Hansel & Gretel use to find their way out of the forest? I know the last time their stepmother left them in the forest, they used breadcrumbs which were eaten by the birds, but didn’t they use string at some point?
Or am I mixing it up with the Greek myth @tiddler cited?
13 April 2013 at 18:53 #5373There was another 1981 reference this week (Ultravox). I’ve been infected by the numerology bug which has been going about. There were a number of ’27’ refs in a the last couple of episodes. 3 x 27 = 81.
I realise this doesn’t actually mean anything but hey, I’m giving it a go!
13 April 2013 at 17:59 #5357Oh yes, forgot to add, best of this run so far. I would have been running for the sofa to hide behind if I was youngster.
Next week’s looks even scarier!
13 April 2013 at 17:58 #5355Couple of clues/refs I spotted in the first viewing:
1) Submarine is called ‘Firebird’ – ie phoenix.
2) ‘Hungry like the wolf’ – a bad wolf reference again
13 April 2013 at 16:35 #5337…aaaah just got back indoors after an afternoon toddling about in, what the media & weather people were exclaiming would be, the first proper day of spring. Needless to say it was p***ing it down and freezing.
Putting my fourpenneth in, I’m thinking that the car will not make a reappearance. Yes, it did borrow heavily from the ‘Father’s Day’ vehicle, but that was a reference for the Who audience to emphasise the importance of the leaf event.
However, having written the above it does occur to me that there may be reverse echoes (if such a thing exists) with Rose:
1) Mother is dead, as opposed to father
2) Clara says to the Doctor ‘Run, etc’, whilst as someone else on the blog pointed out that the Doctor’s first words to Rose was ‘Run’.
3) The car not mowing down Clara’s pop, but running down Rose’s dad
4) Rose willingly eating alien food in the ‘Long Game’, Clara turning up her nose at it in this episode.
12 April 2013 at 07:13 #5205(Yes@chickenelly I too have a Scottish granny – well, had, bless her).
Ooh that reminds me, my lovely white-haired, imaginary granny hasn’t made an appearance this series. I can say that she preferred the first half of this series (she also didn’t like those kiddies singing) but is looking forward to the 50th anniversary special.
12 April 2013 at 07:06 #5203@craig just adding my support. Like others my computing knowledge is minimal but I do have a Paypal account! You shouldn’t be out of pocket.
Let us know.
10 April 2013 at 20:20 #5005*lights pipe* Time for a couple of theories:
1) The ‘woman in the shop’ mentioned in BoJ will be the Doctor’s granddaughter Susan. I’ve no evidence to back this up, other than the Doctor suddenly mentioned her in this episode. From what we know of previous Moff series, he usually plants all the clues in the present run. As neither Rose or River have been mentioned for a while, I’m going for Susan. *puff puff*
2) Egyptian imagery plus Clara’s Phoenix necklace both hint at a renewal of some sort. I hate to think it *sobs, and nearly puts out pipe* but a regeneration looks like it is in the offing. It would certainly fit in with Clara’s comment about chapter eleven of the book ‘Summer Falls’ making you cry.
10 April 2013 at 20:06 #4999@juniperfish & @Shazzbot (of the ‘utter codswallop fame)
Re: denials being a smokescreen.
Now that you bring the subject up, when I was coming back through Trafalgar Square yesterday (sans TARDIS) there were three new costumed living ‘statues’. Instead of being painted silver and standing on a box very still, these three new figures were merely dressed in ill-fitting and (I’ve got to say) tatty costumes, each lurking about hopefully looking for cash. One was dressed as a fluffy yellow chicken, one was (I think) Sylvester the Cat and the other (who was of a slightly larger build) was Shrek.
It all fits!
10 April 2013 at 18:50 #4981@craig – thanks for posting the Australian clip and of course for all your hard work on our lovely site here. [The Grauniad one currently has metaphorical tumbleweed slowly drifting around. Even Dan has gone off on holiday.]
McCoy does sound a bit hacked off he’s not been invited for the 50th anniversary but then as has been discussed before, the Moff has said he was never a fan of the multiple Doctor episodes (they were my favourites as a child). I too would like to see more of McGann, I do like the audio versions of the 8th Doctor. Oh well, I’ll just have to wait for the Five Doctor audio adventure which has been promised.
9 April 2013 at 12:36 #4803I’ve calmed down since the excitement this morning.
I didn’t think it was JLC in the TARDIS, just someone who looked like her (ie a stunt double). If you’ve seen the pics, you’ll know what I mean. The lack of security also seemed to indicate so, just a couple of bored looking policemen (getting wet as it was p***ing it down).
My excitement was caused by seeing the lovely blue box in real life, as opposed to the old police phoneboxes we pretend are it.
9 April 2013 at 08:45 #4763….*out of breath*…oooh ooh oooh I just saw the TARDIS (the proper blue wooden one) on my way to work!
*SPOILERS*
It was hanging off a crane in Trafalgar Square. Someone looking a bit like JLC was looking out of it, and on the ground it was surrounded by security clad (?UNIT) type people.
*END OF SPOILERS*
I presume they were filming for the 50th Anniversary special, although I couldn’t see any cameras about. Having said that, I didn’t have time to hang around. Unfortunately my phone is a bit cobblers and I didn’t have a camera on me.
8 April 2013 at 07:08 #4579A quick posting whilst I’m eating breakfast (ooh just like old times, except here as the Grauniad has descended into a complete negative fest).
Re: 3 x Claras who are all similar.
It is looking like the Doctor is meeting this person over and over again for a reason and until he finds said reason it will happen again and again. What I’m thinking is, are these Claras the same person or individuals who have been shaped the same way? That is, is her upbringing been replicated to produce the same person?
It’s a bit early I know to bring in the Fuhrer, but this is the storyline of ‘Boys from Brazil’, that is producing lots of little Hitlers. Could Clara turn out to be a wrong ‘un after all? That would be great!
7 April 2013 at 20:06 #4507I’m still undecided about the episode I’ll need to rewatch it but, as I mentioned on the Grauniad blog, kiddiwinks singing really set my teeth on edge. If I can get past that (ie with the mute button) it might improve – a bit like the Dinosaurs episode when I had to mute the Mitchell & Webb robots.
On a more positive note, this episode should be stuffed with clues to trawl over so toe curling and grinding teeth aside, I’ll persevere.
One of the major factoids I know about Akhenaten is (apart from being the father of Tutankhamen) was that when he died, and Egyptian religion reverted back to polytheism, any images of him that the priests could find was destroyed (ie face scratched out from frescoes) to attempt to obliterate his existence. With careful crowbarring, this echoes what has happened to the Doctor.
7 April 2013 at 08:35 #4381Speaking of memories & grandparents
1) Clara remembered seeing the Doctor at her mother’s funeral only at the end of the episode, is he therefore retrospectively visiting her past and implanting himself in her memories?
2) The little girl was dressed in a red hood, but instead of seeing grandmother, she was to see grandfather – who gets eaten by the big bad wolf.
I would be surprised if Clara turns out to be related to the Doctor, we’ve already done that with Amy/Rory/River Song arc.
6 April 2013 at 21:50 #4333Re: Ravenwood & DELSA
Are these merely little Easter eggs for beady eyed fans I ask myself. ie:
Raven = Black, therefore Blackwood (little Caitlan Blackwood)
DELSA = Slade(n) (Elizabeth Sladen) [okay that last one may be stretching it a bit]
*lights pipe*
I do have to point out that there seems to be a Spielbergian obsession with divorced or absent parents for the last few series: Rose (father died young), Martha (parents split up), Donna (okay her pop wasn’t in the picture as the original actor passed away), Amy (no parents at all) and now Clara (mother died young).
*adopts cod Austrian accent to go with pipe* Maybe zis haz more to say about ze psychology of Doctor Who showrunners zan vee think?
6 April 2013 at 18:09 #4279Well that gives us less to work with *scratches out leaf theories*.
What are we left with? The Tardis didn’t let Clara in, also it didn’t translate for her either. Significant? Or inconsistent writing?
5 April 2013 at 12:16 #4207I’ve not had any particularly Earth shattering ideas, waiting for Saturday’s episode to get a few more clues. However I’ve got the following observations:
1) Leaf. I reckon the leaf thing may still be important as unless you had watched the prequel you wouldn’t know. Perhaps there is some event that takes place at that time that the Doctor has to go back to sort out? Also, in the series preview, isn’t the Doctor in a creepy looking forest at one point saying something along the lines of ‘I’m the Doctor and I’m afraid’?
2) Pedantic quibble. When the Doctor and Clara zoom off on the motorbike from Southbank, they end up crossing Westminster Bridge (past the Houses of Parliament) and proceed to go along the Mall towards Buckingham Palace. St Paul’s Cathedral is in the other direction. I would suggest that he gets a GPS system but that was knobbled in the Sontaran double bill a couple of series ago.
1 April 2013 at 22:18 #3997…on a side note, there is now a third Doctor Who article/comments page on the Guardian. Another review, to go with the two reviews they’ve already got up there.
Having multiple pages with nesting doesn’t exactly make it user friendly, not like the old days when we’d all follow a train of thought (or a few at the same time) then put our fourpenneth in. Like others, I don’t think I’ll be adding much to the Guardian Who blogs.
Oh yes, and the new episode of Jonathan Creek sucked big time. I’d suggest @wolfweed writes a stern letter to the BBC to make him get a divorce and move back into the windmill again.
1 April 2013 at 08:44 #3935Not really news as such, but the Peter Cushing film ‘Doctor Who and the Daleks’ is on Channel Five today.
I’ve not seen it for years, but I’ve got a vague memory of it being on a Saturday morning and thinking ‘where’s Tom Baker?’ Now that I’ve come to terms with more than one person playing the Doctor, I might give it a look.
Or I may just toddle off to the shops looking for half price Easter eggs…
31 March 2013 at 12:33 #3803*lights pipe* I think you’re right @phaseshift, the ‘girl in the shop’ must be Rose. Not wishing to be ageist, but River would surely be described as ‘woman in the shop’ by Clara.
Now that Tennant & Piper are on board, the mirroring/reflections and references to parallel universes are beginning to make sense. It also fits in with some other posters theories of there being two Doctors. In this case literally. *puff puff*
30 March 2013 at 21:56 #3743Looks like you can buy the ‘Summer Falls’ book, see: http://merchandise.thedoctorwhosite.co.uk/doctor-who-summer-falls/
30 March 2013 at 20:13 #3715Oh yes, I nearly got the ref to the ‘Bells of St John’ title. I did suggest that it could mean the church of the Order of St John who were the basis of the St John’s Ambulance brigade.
Okay, maybe I only got the end bit by accident, but hey I’m out of practice.
30 March 2013 at 20:11 #3713I found myself getting rather excited during the theme tune, felt the same when the Ecclestone series began.
In fact the episode did remind me a bit of ‘Rose’ in that the protagonist wasn’t that important, it was just a way of introducing a new companion. I must admit I missed the author of the book, I was too busy thinking to myself ‘who is the girl on the front cover?’ to see who wrote it. I also missed the scarf ref others have spotted. So yes @phaseshift I think there are other things for us to rake over for multiple viewings and when combined with an arc, it should keep us busy for a bit. *pipe on standby*
The Guardian confusingly has two comment pages open, Dan’s weekly blog and a review page.
23 March 2013 at 21:44 #3487Hooray! At last a little nugget from the new series *lights pipe*.
Not much to go on admittedly, but I’ve watched it twice – once without any expectations and then, after reading @craig‘s post, with a more considered view. Hmmm, I think you must be right @craig. It is an echo of the meeting with little Amelia but this time it is he who has to wait.
Plus having another kiddie (who I must admit isn’t a patch on little Amelia), targets it at the children in the audience.
19 March 2013 at 22:10 #3313Thanks @bluesqueakpip I knew I wasn’t dreaming.
What about the room (?)11 which the Doctor peered into in the hotel in the God Complex. What was there? And wasn’t there a suggestion of a Cloister bell there?
19 March 2013 at 19:20 #3305Wasn’t there a reference to ‘Oranges & Lemons’ in a previous episode? Can’t remember which one (out of practice) but the final lines of ‘Here comes a candle to light you to bed, Here comes a chopper to chop off your head’ rings a bell (ooh pun-tastic).
There is the Order of St John which the St John’s Ambulance brigade has its origins. Its priory church is in the general area of a lot of the other churches in the rhyme.
18 March 2013 at 07:53 #3267Preview of new series here.
At time of posting there was one lonely comment underneath. Also, despite promises, the other Who episode blogs are closing, again from lack of interest.
Maybe it is a protest against the nesting system, or perhaps it was just us that was keeping it all going?
6 March 2013 at 18:55 #3067The above don’t tell you much, plus some of them I’ve seen before!
John Barrowman was on Richard Bacon today backtracking about possible participation in the 50th anniversary. He said it could involve just hosting a party… The good news is that Barrowman said there will be no more Torchwood (hooray!).
6 March 2013 at 18:52 #3065New photos from the upcoming series here
24 February 2013 at 21:16 #2887I don’t like the nesting thing on Guardian comments either. There was an article last weekend sometime saying that the new format must be better as they had more comments. After having a think about it (especially in view of how we all used to read the Dr Who blogs) more comments doesn’t necessarily mean more popular. Revisiting a page to read new comments (as we all used to do on the Who blog) is nigh impossible nowadays, especially for the Dr Who lurkers (which included me until the 5th series).
I was going to post something along these lines on said article but I couldn’t find the bloody thing. However at the time I did chuckle that virtually all the comments below were slagging off the new ‘better’ format. There might have been others that liked it but the new nesting format meant they would be stuck on page 3.
14 February 2013 at 20:49 #2657It’s interesting that the new Guardian blog says it will be open until the 50th celebrations in November. It does sound like they are trying to tempt us back – the last few Dr Who related comments sections have been rather sparse affairs.
I’ll just toddle over there now to nosy about…
11 February 2013 at 23:04 #26133D! What a waste of money. I’ve still a little cathode ray tube telly.
I’ve only seen two films in 3D: Tron 2 (the 3D was cobblers, but so was the film mind) and the Hobbit (made me dizzy due to it being shot on digital film which was all out of focus during fast moving bits).
Now if it was the red/green spec type of 3D I might be up for that. Do many people have 3D tellys? Or do you think there are plans for a limited cinema run?
8 February 2013 at 19:48 #2487I suspect that it will be all change this year too. In terms of show runners, what about Toby Whitehouse now that Being Human has got the chop?
4 February 2013 at 23:19 #2393Hmmm @phaseshift your description of Sapphire and Steel makes it sound quite good.
It was on when I was either off to Brownies or coming back and I distinctly remember not having a clue what was going on in any of the episodes I caught the back/front end of.
Perhaps now is the time for a revisit, then again with your description of the lack of budget it might not hold up to my modern, superficial eyeballs.
30 January 2013 at 18:58 #2153Hmmm, Matt might be looking at how Tennant’s career has panned out after leaving – I’m thinking of those Virgin adverts, a pilot for a US tv series which wasn’t picked up and making a couple of duff films.
I think it’s called the ‘Caruso curse’….
30 January 2013 at 07:47 #2111Yes I woke up to David Bradley being Hartnell in Gatiss’ Who special. Bradley is a great actor so I’m looking forward to it.
27 January 2013 at 11:32 #1971Posted the above before actually reading it. One of those Guardian interviews which doesn’t contain any interview.
27 January 2013 at 11:29 #1969Interview with JLC in the Observer: http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2013/jan/27/jenna-louise-coleman-interview
