    I cheated this week. I watched half of this episode on Friday and finished it today so I am finally up to date. I really enjoyed the series. I was surprised to realise that I had not seen it before. I agree that the ending does seem rather rushed. The story arc proved less interesting than the components but that is so often the case. Returning…[Read more]

    @Craig

    That’s real life for you. But the lack of commentary is now rectified. 🙂

  • Yes, indeed, the Doctor is back from his hols. It’s interesting to compare the obviously exhausted Billy Hartnell in the first couple of episodes with the bouncy Billy of this episode. On top of his acting form, obviously enjoying himself. By this time Doctor Who was a clear success; Bill Hartnell’s contribution to that was to act his socks off.…[Read more]

    @craig @hiker @thane15 @bluesqueakpip  Thanks for the support.

    I already try to keep up with those shows you mentioned Craig — I’ve followed some of them for years now — but it’s getting harder because I work nights and Mom notices if I have used the On Demand system on our cable boxes to catch up during the day.  She says I “better stop w…[Read more]

    hey @craig – apologies for delay in responding.

    Probably (certainly!) too late now, but…

  • The epic this week was getting to actually watch the episode. Between the DVD getting lost in the post, my YouTube app collapsing, and DailyMotion deciding to perpetually replay an ad about alien casinos without ever getting to alien snowscapes, I was beginning to feel like someone trekking across a sub-zero landscape peopled by greedy wolves,…[Read more]

    Thank you and sorry to @wolfweed, @Craig, @Bluesqeekpip, @JimTheFish @Rorysmith @Bleckonstopthebrave @nerys @winston @missy and @whisit (and anyone else I missed, I did make a list) for you kind words and no responding before.

    I dunno about George Lucas – but it was pretty obvious that Steven Moffat’s watched this one. 🙂 Though his Weeping Angels were cast using dancers who could hold absolutely still, not an extra who was clearly starting to tremble with the strain of holding the axe.

    I’m really starting to dislike Arbitan and his friends. Okay, evil Voords,…[Read more]

    @thane15 – ah, thankfully @craig has explained kerning better than I could.

    Apologies for my rather tired ‘joke’ about kerning.
    I’ll blame tiredness when posting for the lack of ‘funny’, as I think we can all agree that typography is a fascinating subject that can be deeply mined for comedy.

  • Well, that was fun.

    Much as I enjoyed seeing Barbara chew gum and kick ass (and the gum was an illusion), the acting that seriously impressed me was William Hartnell in the scene where Barbara wakes up and sees the reality. I’ll have to watch this again, later. How did Hartnell manage to make himself seem so very, very creepy?

    @Craig – the irony…[Read more]

    @craig  Thank you for the link. It was fun to watch this for the 1st time and I liked it. Yes it shows its age like an embarassing politically incorrect old Uncle but you give it a break because it is of its time. Not to say I didn’t flinch at times but I kept watching and it was pretty good. I got a kick out of Barbara calling the Tardis a s…[Read more]

    there is also the sexism in the script (or in the Doctor), which made me wince.

    Yes, there were a few moments of serious wincing. Like the ‘we’re fine, because Ian is still free, so he’ll rescue us.’ At which point Barbara points out that Ian got captured before she did. Looking at Barbara’s characterisation, she’s making an incredible…[Read more]

    @craig:   Loved this, thank you.  As you say @bluesqueakpip, what a cliffhanger.

    Although the special effects and scenery were off, it still drew me in to the point where I actually swore when it ended!

  • @Craig

    Well, since I made the suggestion, I’d better make a post. 😀

    This is the first time I’ve seen this episode and I don’t know how Keys of Marinus ends – though I think I have seen one episode from the middle. So all my thoughts are genuinely unspoiled speculation.

    First thought: I think Verity Lambert had spent all the budget on Marco…[Read more]
