@mersey In my experience commercial = rule by accountants with a “profit first” mentality. Quality is invariably the first victim.
@blenkinsopthebrave I too think that the promise the Doctor made to Susan is going to be significant this series. One of the themes of Pilot was promises, those that must be kept and those that are best broken,…[Read more]

Welcome back @craig
@jimthefish: It’s horses for courses, of course, but personally I prefer SM’s approach. RTD’s stuff was fun and exciting but lacks the depth, nuance and richness of the SM era.
Oh I do agree. I wonder whether SM will write at least one episode in series 11, after all, he did in previous series.
@ichabod: All this strea…[Read more]

@zeyra I travelled alone and with friends and usually while travelling alone I would make friends along the way who I travelled with for a time, when our respective paths ran parallel. There are benefits to travelling alone but there are also a lot of negatives. Aside from the greater freedom that travelling with a companion gives, (for a woman…[Read more]

I wouldn’t overstate the strong position of the Beeb. It’s been on the ropes politically for a decade now and if the next general election goes the way it’s looking it’s going to get worse. But Who is one of its strongest properties, that’s for sure. I think it will definitely become a streaming property at some point — it’s…[Read more]

I think the ££-joke is probably meant to signify a sense of humour … and a sense of humour signifies autonomous intelligence
That makes a lot of sense and, although I didn’t consciously note it at the time, it may have been something which registered subliminally as supporting my conclusion that the em…[Read more]

Thank you I feel less alone now !
@ichabod Thank you to you too ! I really feel better now !
It doesn’t solve my problem though… In math class this morning the teachers kept calling me every 10min so I focus on the exercises… I didn’t do anything except drawing a TARDIS, some Bowties and Ten wearing 3D glasses… The guy sitting…[Read more]

@blenkinsopthebrave Still waiting for my own copy of DW Magazine to make it here (also in Canada but not such a remote part I suspect) but Dan Martin quoted a section of the interview in his Guardian review of the episode. Here it is: “I love watching what happens with emojis, how people use them for different things, and the change of meaning…[Read more]

An intriguing question, @ichabod. Perhaps it is not just that the promise has a strong hold on the Doctor, but his loneliness as well. Nardole is a fine valet, but the Doctor’s loneliness after so much loss still runs deep. Perhaps he was thankful for something to keep him “grounded”, as it were, instead of curling up into a ball of sorrow. P…[Read more]

Thane:
Thank you so much for responding, I was beginning to think that I was invisible – only joking. I didn’t notice any comment from @ichabod, but then there were so many posts, and I’m not on here every day, that I tried to speed read. Obviously NOT a good idea as I missed it. Yes, indeed, it’s a brilliant plot and it seems as though everyone…[Read more]

Kharis commented on the post, Faces of the Doctor: Peter Capaldi – the quixotic, unknowable anti-authority figure?
@ichabod Exactly.
This is brilliant and with your permission I’d like to repost this to others on my personal media: “We live in mindless times; when world events are as unstable and scary as they’ve been […]

@ichabod You’re right, as usual. I’m just not ready to let go of this regeneration of the Doctor, and it’s even more worrisome that we lose Moffat at the same time. It’s extremely trendy to whine about Moffat, […]

@ichabod I would agree with you if it was any of the other Rembrandt’s late self-portraits in which he did depicted himself as an old man who stares in disbelief how the young man full of self-confidence and self-esteem he was turned into this tired and lonely old man. But even than the sense of humor didn’t abandoned him as he painted himself im…[Read more]

I, too, remember the rag-and-bone man who came round with his horse and cart collecting scrap metal, old clothes and other items for what we would now term recycling. I don’t remember if he collected meat bones as well, but he may well have done, presumably for glue making, or grinding for fertilizer. We used to have a knife g…[Read more]

@ichabod: I suppose that they were hard times, but you were used to it. Reading your description of your flat I suddenly got a flashback of Lucy’s place in Doctor Mysterio. The fire escape, the steps up to the front door. We had the top flat in a two storey house over a fishmongers By the time I was sent out to buy coke or coal, we’d been bombed…[Read more]

You have just reminded me that I have a copy of The City and the City which I bought ages ago and put aside to read later. It got buried under a pile of other books, but I have just checked and relocated it, so I have put it back on top of the pile. I must have read most of Ray Bradbury’s output back in the day and it is, as you say, h…[Read more]

@ichabod Lucky you! I know there are other people who enjoy Who in my neck of the woods, but we’re not organized, and not all of the Fathom Events screenings make it to my area. As I recall we got the 3D Series 8 finale and “The Power of the Daleks”, but not Twelve’s most recent Xmas specials. It does look like the Series 10 premiere/Class do…[Read more]
