@ichabod In The Name of the Doctor, I interpret Vastra as basically acting as a shaman even using drugged vapors to get Clara from the 2000s to be able to attend the conference call from Victorian England. Then and after in the series it has been mentioned that time travel can occur in dreams.

I personally believe the Tardis is programmed by a future version of the Doctor to do various magical things when they are needed, such as the door slamming shut in Journey’s End which eventually led to the short-term creation of the Doctor-Donna.

I believe before he was diverted to Skaro, the Doctor was actually investigating the Weeping Angels, which is why he was headed to a particular bookstore, that of Sally Sparrow. Or perhaps it was another bookstore that had a book that had an interesting picture of a Weeping Angel captured on it. That is why the Doctor was traveling alone, to avoid another time accident with a companion. But the Tardis knew on this day, this hour, the Doctor had an appointment to see Boy Davros to get various things started.

Everything is coming together in the Doctor Who universe to one giant unity. I speculate the Time Lords will never come back to this universe. They are forever in another dimension and can only communicate indirectly through dreams and visions. Madame Vastra is a shaman who use hallucinogens to induce an altered state of consciousness to communicate across time, space, and I speculate dimensions. Dr. Who can therefore mine an entire genre of modern ancient astronaut / New Age theory that contends that psychedelics enabled shamans past and present to communicate with spirits from other dimensions and obtain forbidden knowledge. The Time Lords are going to be those spirits. Some will be kind and helpful, guardian angels. And some will be corrupted and desire what they ought not to have, to rejoin this universe to enjoy the flesh. These will have a terrible end and will become another type of angel, Weeping Angels, a form of demon condemned to feed off the suffering of others through time distortions.

Now here’s another bonkers speculation: The sonic screwdriver the Doctor gave to Boy Davros had two types of extremely important information that would shape the Daleks into a force that could threaten the universe: Time Lord tech from the future and Time Lord DNA. The Daleks have both the talent and the knowledge to stand toe-to-toe warring with the Time Lords because thanks to the Doctor, the Time Lords and Daleks are brothers.

That is also the only possible eventual resolution to their war, this mutual realization.

The poodle belongs to both members of the older couple. Missy created Clara as much as the Doctor did. Missy has stated she has been all up and down the timestream of the Doctor’s companions, so she has probably seen Clara’s end. After all it is the Master who looked into the void while the Doctor ran away when they were kids. And it was Missy who used the phrase “impossible girl” in the newspaper advertisement to get Clara’s attention, so Missy knows what role Clara has in the Doctor’s existence.

Here’s a speculation that should blow everyone’s mind: What if the Doctor figures out a way to send kid Davros, perhaps through using some sort of binding contract on Missy, back as a human kid to be adopted by Amy and Rory? That would force the Doctor to never interfere in kid Davros’ life again and let kid Davros find his own destiny.

    jphamlore @replies

And for the nitpick of the day: How did the Doctor know that Davros wasn’t an extremely common name on Skaro? Just think if the original Terminator had assumed the first Sarah Connor was the only one. For all the Doctor knew that kid had nothing to do with the future Davros leader of the Daleks.

One big objection to the Doctor assuming the role of Davros is Davros used his own DNA to re-jumpstart the Daleks. Wouldn’t someone have noticed Time Lord DNA? However, Davros I believe is a mutant. He may have been mutated by the hand mines. Perhaps the hand mines would enable a Time Lord to be mutated to something unrecognizable from a Time Lord if processed in a certain way.

It is amazing the lines one finds in “Genesis of the Daleks.” The Fourth Doctor asserts he KNOWS the Daleks existence will be for some good millions of years into the future.

And Davros actually asks his creations the Daleks for pity to spare the lives of Davros’ team of scientists.

    #43097
    jphamlore @replies

“Davros created the Daleks. But who created Davros?”

The Doctor created Davros. He owes that kid, and if he’s anything of what I think the Doctor is, he’s eventually going to find a way to let that kid have his own destiny.

It might not be resolved next episode. It might not be resolved this season. But I’m really thinking that the Doctor will find a way to stand in for the kid in Davros’ role, especially when Capaldi is about to exit the role as the Doctor.

The Doctor was looking for a bookstore. I wonder if he was going to Sally Sparrow’s. I wonder if he was investigating Weeping Angels and they made a diversion of him. I wonder if the Weeping Angels are fallen Time Lords.

    jphamlore @replies

There’s an astonishing possibility hinted at by Davros’ remark that he approves of the Doctor’s Capaldi older face. Davros is a role. What is done, what has been observed by the Doctor, cannot be undone. But it has been the role that has been observed. This could take the entire season to play out, but this could be the greatest Dr. Who twist ever, something to top everything.

The Capaldi Doctor could save the child Davros by taking on the role of Davros throughout history. While playing the role, the Doctor could secretly hide in the Dalek’s DNA the unlocking of their potential as ordinary beings, with conflicting emotions, both good and bad, a genetic time bomb set to go off after the moment he decides to assume the role of Davros.

So the end of Davros’ life could actually be the end of the Capaldi Doctor’s life. Have the season end of a cliffhanger of whether he can be regenerated or not.

There is a pretty easy, too easy, way to “resolve” the problem of the Doctor changing time. He doesn’t.

The Doctor reprograms a sonic screwdriver (he had a spare K9, why not a spare screwdriver?) and switches it with the one he gave the child Davros. This sonic screwdriver has subtle errors programmed into the information it contains. This explains all of the times Davros seems set for victory but something happens to leave him short. And when Davros programs the DNA of his Daleks, there is a time bomb set in the screwdriver’s information for the present time so that the Daleks regain all of their emotions, and their unity and civilization crumble.

It is interesting to me the Daleks wish not to obtain the secrets of the Tardis, which they were offered by Missy, but to destroy it. Perhaps the Tardis does contain the Time Lord’s Eye of Harmony, the only captured black hole singularity that gives the Time Lord control over time. The Daleks must feel they are winning and that only time travel can defeat them.

The series has gone partly medieval this season and I suspect will go even more so, based on current popular series fashion. This is a promising sign that something will be done to incorporate themes from the movie Interstellar, while it is trendy and remains in the mind of those who saw the movie.

@juniperfish: Weren’t the Thals shown in the very first Dr. Who classic series as fighting the Daleks?

@bluesqueakpip: You stated exactly what I have thought needed to be done with the Daleks.

I congratulate Steven Moffat for finally apparently trying to lance the boil that has been destroying any chance of moral legitimacy for the Doctor. Before this storyline he was a murderer with the blood of possibly trillions on his hands. As I wrote in the spoiler section last night before this episode was shown, the Doctor wound up making the Dalek problem infinitely worse with his interference in Genesis of the Daleks. Even then it was clear the Doctor created the menace of Davros by showing Davros the possibilities of interstellar and time travel.

I conjecture Davros at least has limited time travel, especially with the sonic screwdriver as a homing signal, at least relative to Skaro so he can send the Doctor back to when the Doctor first met Davros as a young boy.

So I conjecture that Missy and Clara are actually dead, but Davros wants to force the Doctor to go back in time and try and alter it to save their lives.

Because what really is the philosophical dispute between the Doctor and Davros? It is freedom vs authoritarianism. What Davros wants to do is force the Doctor to explicitly mold the future, to attempt to achieve perfection, as opposed to letting certain things have their freedom to make decisions.

@brewski: Just from watching the series, it is clear there is some connection between Missy and the Great Intelligence? Missy actually knows of Clara being the “Impossible Girl” as shown by the advertisement in the newspaper in S8 “Deep Breath”. The technology of uploading minds to a cloud is also used by both the Great Intelligence and Missy.

Come to think of it, this is not the first time the Doctor has retreated somewhere quiet to think?

About Genesis of the Daleks, the classic series showed a decline in the Daleks influence to a state where they could be absolutely defeated by an enemy such as the Movellans. Thus the Fourth Doctor’s assertion that the Daleks existence could contribute to the common good by forcing other species to unite in a common cause to contain them was somewhat plausible, if not shown.

But by the time of the new series, I cannot help but draw the conclusion that the Doctor by refusing to destroy the Daleks is a murderer of trillions if not more people. Now the Daleks cannot be contained by even the Time Lords. It is a miracle the Daleks did not set off a bomb (a popularization of destabilizing the false vacuum?) that would have destroyed all of reality across all dimensions. One can argue that the Doctor making himself know to Davros helped inspire Davros to attain a level of malevolent scientific evil far beyond what he would have achieved otherwise. The Doctor has no excuse because he actually witnessed the creation of the Daleks where Davros explained to him they were engineered to be irredeemably evil from the start.

Thus I suspect that Moffat will somehow square the circle and find a way for the Fourth Doctor to have made the right decision with respect to the Daleks, especially since Tom Baker was persuaded to make another appearance in the series. Perhaps this will involve the creation of an intergalactic security force similar to the United Nations but one with enough teeth to hold the Daleks in check and contain other obvious aggression between different species.

I find it interesting this episode is showing that if one of the last of a male / female pair of a species, it is acceptable to commit atrocities to keep the hopes of a species alive.  I think this has something to say about the situation of the Time Lords.

@suzannems But I think part of the point that Missy is trying to make with her very appearance, the time period she chose, is that the Doctor might not have love for her, but that he has duties as a member of the aristocracy and must remember that in the end he must be of a higher level than the servants, ie, humans.

Thus the manipulations of Missy into the Doctor and Clara’s relationship.  I suspect Missy is trying to manipulate things so that the Doctor will realize that he may have a million adventures with a servant, but eventually he must grow up and realize he is aristocracy.  So Missy has been trying to make the Doctor and Clara’s relationship as intense, as exciting, as possible, but the Doctor must realize it must eventually end, probably badly.

Missy’s appearance I interpret is the last era where one could argue this with a perfectly clear conscience.

@ichabod I thought it has been established that one cannot consciously know certain things about the future and then act contrary to them without creating paradoxes.  Of course one can try to do certain calculations to avoid destroying the very fabric of space and time.

And I suspect since it is imperative that Doctor Who the series take advantage of whatever memory people have of Interstellar, now is the time to have another take on foreknowledge.  Perhaps there will even be mentioned some sort of 5-dimensional bulk and beings in that bulk, one of the beings a version of the Doctor.

The Doctor looked away from the void, the Master looked into it when they were initiated.  I suspect Rassilon and the Time Lords looked into the void and saw their future where Gallifrey had disappeared from the record and made plans accordingly, with failsafes:  the Doctor and the Master.

The answer for why the Master regenerated as a woman is stunningly obvious if one just watches the past season, other than perhaps she could have been a bit younger so as to be clearly of fertile age — but perhaps things are far different for Time Lords.  It is given right in an episode of the past season Time Heist where it was shown with a male and female of a species there is always hope for the species to continue.  It was also shown that for the sake of a species survival, many would do almost anything, and that that was not necessarily a bad thing.

@gamergirl: The Hand of Omega may require a sacrifice, someone to pass over to the anti-matter universe.  Suppose the Doctor had hidden the Hand of Omega in the past and attempted to retrieve it.  What he did not anticipate was Maise Williams character hiding in the container containing the Hand of Omega and becoming the new Omega when the Doctor uses the Hand to control a supernova.  Suddenly mysterious creatures from another dimension start invading the regular universe.  To make things even more crazy, this dimension may be the alternate Earth similar to that in the classic Pertwee-era Inferno.  The Doctor realizes something has gone dreadfully wrong with the singularity in the black hole created by the Hand of Omega.  Here an homage to Interstellar is inserted with Clara having to don the astronaut’s suit and enter the singularity.

This is modern media, one has to take advantage of topical themes while one can.  There will be of course some connection with Game of Thrones, but I would suspect there will also be a connection with the movie Interstellar and black holes, especially since the special effects for Interstellar’s black holes were done in the UK.  Thus the astronaut suit on Clara in the trailer, and other hints.  And if there is a black hole, as I have speculated before, there might be an old friend from the distant past of Dr. Who, the Hand of Omega that can both create a supernova and convert its black hole to something that can be tamed, an Eye of Harmony, the Eye of Harmony that can be the foundation for a civilization that can control time itself.  The Time Lords might need a new Eye of Harmony when they start to control humans from behind the scenes as the ancient astronauts.

There might even be Omega or other beings from an anti-matter anti-universe, thus the bulky suits in the trailer.  I have read one of the writers criticize the original Arc of Infinity story arc for being terribly written.  Perhaps the modern writers think they can do much better.

There’s an ancient astronaut synthesis that is terrible science and terrible history, but it might make for decent science fiction.  What is Vastra’s role?  She’s a shaman and even uses what suspiciously looks like hallucinogenics to induce trances that allow time travel.  I would not be surprised if dimensional travel just like New Age shamanism is also possible.

I have argued that Gallifrey is permanently lost in another dimension.  But they can interact with humans throughout human history.  Seeds are being sown with impossible imaginary characters obtaining some sort of substance, such as Robin Hood and Santa Claus last season.  The Time Lords are now the demons / angels that New Age faiths are promoting can be reached in shamanistic trances.  They have infiltrated human consciousness throughout human history and are the gods of the ancient astronauts, and the beings of legend, and many other spiritual phenomena.

@charlottegiles:  As Danny was converted to a Cyberman, his DNA information might have been analyzed and uploaded to the Gallifreyan hard drive of Missy.

And as the classic Arc of Infinity storyline showed, as have many storylines since, once one has that DNA information, many things are possible for creating / re-creating people.

The thing is, as Time of the Doctor made abundantly clear, the Time Lords as we knew them in the classic series aren’t coming back.  Ever.  It is not possible as their return would start a new Time War.  My speculation is way back when it all began for the Time Lords, Rassilon looked too far into the void, into the future, and saw the Time Lords had ceased to exist.  So a backup plan was made involving Earth and humans to act as Time Lord surrogate bodies.

It has been shown that UNIT scavenges any advanced extraterrestrial technology they can lay their hands on, including tech they should not have such as time travel tech.  Also they are mistrustful of the Doctor enough to fortify their hideaway to be impervious to a Tardis.

It would not surprise me if UNIT therefore scavenged Missy’s Gallifeyan hard drive and are now playing with tech they don’t understand fully.  And perhaps there could be a version of Davros posing as one of their chief scientists.  After all, I think in the entire history of Dr. Who, the Doctor has been as angry at humans meddling with technology beyond the species wisdom and being tribally self as trying to help humans get themselves out of the messes they create.

@lisa Yes the two Osgoods figured out who was what in Day of the Doctor because the Zygon Osgood had taken from the human Osgood her inhaler.  Therefore when the two were talking among themselves and one reached for the inhaler on her person, both instantly knew that was the Zygon.  However they smiled to themselves and apparently kept their knowledge a secret.

@denvaldron You are I think correct, although I simply cannot recall at the moment which Osgood tried to treat her asthma and which had the inhaler.

With the peace treaty I am going to assume the Zygons are given some part of Earth that I believe they need to terraform (Zygon-form?) to their particular needs.

    @gamergirlavatar

I think Moffat is doing a stupendous job using a variety of concepts from classic Dr. Who.  It was already established long ago that the Master had penetrated the Time Lords Matrix, and it also was established that if one could obtain some sort of DNA blueprint, a person, in this case Omega, could be reconstructed by transmitting information from another universe to this one.

I speculate the Time Lords are now at best information:  Their physical bodies can never again cross back to this universe.  They are like Omega in the classic series.  Thus they must make a completely untrustworthy alliance with the Master to bring them as information somewhere, Earth I believe.  The Master cannot stand the thought of being the last Time Lord, yet he also hates the Time Lords.

Look at how Missy is portrayed — she seems to very easily go in and out of paradise which is presumably inside the Gallifreyan hard drive.  I conjecture the Master is already comfortable with the idea of being information uploaded to a hard drive, and is testing this process for the other Time Lords.  Of course at the right time he will seek to obtain advantage over them.

    #39916
    jphamlore @replies

@lisa:  Here’s some speculation to tie in all of your news:

The UK has as smart people as anywhere else who I have no doubt would like to show they can match Interstellar, effects and story.  And Dr. Who has that right because many of the elements of Interstellar’s story were in Dr. Who decades ago, at least by the Three Doctors and Deadly Assassin.  Black hole engineering that saves a planet and leads to a civilization that rules time and space, a heroic sacrifice to start the process:  that’s all Dr. Who.

And if I am right that the Time Lords want to be reborn on Earth, it could well happen again.  They will need a new black hole converted to an Eye of Harmony by the Hand of Omega.  It just happens there has been speculation about what is the fate of the red supergiant Betelgeuse, a star so close to Earth, good enough at least for science fiction purposes, there is concern when it supernovas it could wipe out life on Earth.

There are all sorts of characters one could expect to see pop up for the creation of a new Eye of Harmony, such as the Master, Davros, maybe River Song.  One of the upcoming episodes features a character named Odin, intriguing to me because Odin is the one who sacrified an eye and hung from a tree for many days for wisdom.  For there must be human sacrifice for this new Eye of Harmony.  I wonder if Clara is being prepared.

My out-of-left-field speculation for this season and the future is:  It’s Valeyard time!

Kate Smith has been shown to be quite ruthless for Earth’s interests.  Suppose that the Time Lords, perhaps through the Master, are offering a back-channel deal behind the Doctor’s back.  Now how can Kate Smith negotiate with the Master / Missy when Missy tried her best to kill Kate Smith?  Missy has demonstrated she’s not going anywhere and must be dealt with.  The Time Lords can’t come back normally, that would start another Time War.  They need a place to hide in plain sight throughout time.  They need Earth, and they need to assume the identities of humans, and lots of them.  How useful was it to collect the database of the lives of all the human dead stored in that Gallifreyan hard drive.  The universe is a very dangerous place for a lonely primitive planet like Earth.  It might be extremely useful to be able to call on Time Lord help other than the Doctor’s.

The Master / Missy is also interested in the Doctor because the Doctor may be fated to help create the Valeyard, a truly dangerous opponent and rival of the Master.  But which direction causes the creation of the Valeyard:  Is it the Doctor betraying the Time Lords once again, or is it the Doctor finally siding with the Time Lords and becoming wrapped up in their bureaucratic mindset?

    jphamlore @replies

@lisa I do agree the Doctor bears responsibility for the perpetration of Davros as a monster throughout time.  I assume before the Doctor interfered all the way back at Genesis of the Daleks that the Daleks simply executed Davros as being superfluous; whereas the Doctor’s interference both led to Davros’ being preserved and gave Davros an understanding of the potential of time travel.  While the Daleks might have been suppressed for a few generations, eventually adding Davros to the mix propelled them to a mastery of weapons including those involving time beyond where they would have been had Genesis of the Daleks never occurred.

However if it is Davros I suspect it would an edited copy reborn in a younger body.  It would tie into my theory that even Time Lords will soon seek to be reborn as ordinary humans throughout Earth’s history to hide from being discovered overtly existing, because overt existence causes another Time War.

@ichabod  Well spoken.  The right non-tech like Clara thinks first of the Doctor after being thrown into having all of time and space open to them with the ability to speak any language; whereas I think a tech-oriented person like Perkins or Osgood would not be paying such emotional attention.

Back to the episode, I wonder if the Doctor fully knows that Time Lords don’t need to die, they just get absorbed into the Matrix.  This can be deduced even from the classic series when the image of Rassilon appeared at the end of the Five Doctors and from Time Lords being able to transfer lives as was the goal of the Valeyard.  The reason they don’t live forever openly is they suffer emotional damage and eventually become unstable.  One can ask as the Master asks in this episode, what about editing someone after uploading them?  The answer again is shown in this episode, because one might be fearful that too much editing changes the identity.

There is a very good reason in the crafting of the story for Osgood to die:  Having seen her technical competence, the Doctor would be expected to make an offer to her to be a companion, she would be expected to say yes, but as previously shown in Season 8 with Perkins, this can’t happen for the very reason she is too technically competent.  Therefore she had to be killed off, immediately.

As shown by Clara’s familiarity with where the Doctor hides his keys to the Tardis, perhaps Clara is interested in the right things.  She has already demonstrated her willingness in becoming the Impossible Girl.

With a nontechnical companion, the viewer innately is prodded to ask, what makes that character worthy to be there, whereas a technically competent one has a reason.  But that makes it perhaps more interesting to see whether the nontechnical companion can somehow be uplifted to justify being with the Doctor.

It seems to me in the classic Dr. Who the Doctor’s enemies were mainly bureaucrats.  That’s what the evil incarnation of the Doctor, the Valeyard was, a bureaucrat.  Or perhaps I should refine this to say the Doctor’s enemies have been mainly politicians, which pulls in supremacists such as Daleks, Cybermen, and Sontarans.

Perhaps in reaction the Doctor deliberately avoid planning or thinking too deeply.  That is after all what bureaucrats and politicians claim to be doing, taking responsibility.  So the Doctor is an idiot with a box and a screwdriver.

Is it an underlying theme that the Doctor is keeping himself constantly in a state of emergency to avoid downtime where he might think and draw some obvious but painful conclusions?  Like maybe the Master never dies because he has figured out how to upload his thoughts to a Gallifreyan hard drive and download them into a new body?  Hasn’t there been by now innumerable stories where some alien species has been tampering with human DNA to use human bodies as a host, including stories with the Master?

Or in the most painful way possible hasn’t the Doctor learned that Gallifrey can never be found because that would reignite the Time War?  The only way for the Time Lords to return to normal time and space would be if they were to hide somewhere, perhaps throughout the time stream.  Where else would that be but Earth?

And just look at how Time Lords are still portrayed in the newer series:  They are church bureaucrats and politicians with the common people dressed like medieval serfs.  A long time ago in the classic series the Doctor realized the evil he had left to fight was actually right there back at home on Gallifrey.

And these monsters with some connection to time travel such as Weeping Angels, where would they get that from other than some connection with Time Lords since the Time Lords used to monopolize that technology.  Thus my prediction which I believe in retrospect will be seen as completely obvious:  Many of the monsters especially those related to time travel will be eventually revealed to be evil Time Lords corrupted in an attempt to usurp humans on Earth.

While the Daleks are the Daleks as they are now, they must forever seek to conquer the universe, and even time and space itself.  If there is a Gallifrey that is at a known place, there must therefore be a Time War.

The easy way out would have been for there to be a renegade faction of Daleks who are somehow good and can coexist with other species.  Yet this episode seems to deny that possibility.  Therefore I assert that Gallifrey can never be returned to normal space as long as this state of the Daleks exist.

There is also the question of whether the Time Lords need change to coexist with other species as much as the Daleks do.  The Time Lords stood aloof not helping those they could help in small ways without destroying the timestream, other than the Doctor, yet the Time Lords also irresponsibly used almost all of their forbidden weapons and almost destroyed the universe in the Time War.

Therefore perhaps the judgment that the Doctor is a good Dalek is saying something about more than the Doctor.  Perhaps it is describing the Time Lords as well.

    jphamlore @replies

My idea is that many of the monsters in the Dr Who universe with unexplained origins such as Dream Crabs, or Weeping Angels, are going to soon have a horrifying one:  They are Time Lords, horribly mangled because they tried to take what they did not have the right to take.

I speculate the Doctor is being manipulated to help the Time Lords research how to replace various humans throughout Earth’s timestream.  The companions are an experiment in seeing how humans can be augmented to eventually be compatible as hosts for Time Lords.  I predict that the Doctor will learn that Gallifrey is indeed permanently trapped in a different dimension, somewhat similar to Omega, and the only way for the Time Lords to escape is for their information to be uploaded back to this universe, and for their information to be used in new cloned bodies.

Storywise it has been shown the Time Lords can never openly return or it would start another Time War.  They must hide therefore within some population.  What better than Earth?  Also the return of Gallifrey would almost revert the Doctor back to being a naughty teenager defying the petty bureaucrats running his old home town, something I doubt anyone wants.

Clara next season according to the end of Last Christmas will be the Magician’s Apprentice.  This is one more step on the Time Lords plan to test humans for eventual replacement.

I think we have also seen what the Doctor’s solution would be to the Time Lords’ problem.  Time travel can also occur in dreams.  He would advise them I think to become benevolent guardian angels who only interfere to help and never go too far.  Some will agree to this.  Others will not and try to force their way to prey on humans.  Those will have some horrible accident happen and they will become monsters like Dream Crabs and Weeping Angels.

Missy asks why no one has thought before of the idea of uploading minds to a Gallifreyan hard drive. Oh but they have. This is the technology of the Peter David-era Arc of Infinity.

To me there is at least one classic villain left to re-introduce, Omega. However, Omega is relatively boring. There was to me one poignant interaction between the Doctor and Omega, and that was when Omega was failing to have his new body retain its integrity, his telling the Doctor that all he wanted to do was go home, back to normal matter space.

So suppose that Moffat knows full well that Omega is boring and there is no point rehashing that story. Think bigger. What if all of Gallifrey is the new Omega, trapped in some alternate dimension with no possibility to come back to normal space. But information can be sent, uploaded to a Gallifreyan hard drive, and then downloaded to a new body if one has the body’s DNA signature.

The original Arc of Infinity storyline had Omega wanting to transfer into a clone of the Doctor’s body. Let’s go bigger. The planet of Gallifrey needs a whole planet-full of bodies. But what planet could possibly serve such a purpose?

And now we see maybe the Master isn’t the only one who has been manipulated since a child into being a failsafe for the Time Lords. For Gallifrey to return would create a new Time War and / or a time paradox. So they must hide, pretend to be someone else. And who better would that be than mere humans. If only the Time Lords had someone whose Tardis could scout all eras of human history, and record without anyone else knowing the DNA signatures of various humans. Then the Time Lords could disappear into various eras of human history just as in the original Star Trek episode.

Of course this will not be the resolution. The Time Lords will not be allowed to steal human bodies. What I suspect will happen is there will be two factions of Time Lords, one who wish to steal by force, one who wish to peacefully coexist. The peaceful faction will propose that the Time Lords live on only non-materially, sort of as guardian angels for humans.

Among other questions the episode asks if the Doctor and Missy (Master) are the same.  On the surface it would appear they are not.  Yet why could the Time Lords not be manipulating the Doctor as much as they did the Master as a failsafe?  One supposedly rogue Time Lord a psychopath, a lunatic, the other a humanitarian, both of whom were very close as friends as children.  How symmetrical.  And Missy seems so desperate to be the Doctor’s companion.

Gallifrey I think needs a huge favor as shown by this and the previous episode.  Someone I think needs to face the ultimate punishment for creating a time paradox that will free Gallifrey from wherever they are, where they are I believe to actually be just as Missy said, at the coordinates of the original Gallifrey only in some sort of different dimension.

And perhaps that makes humans another Gallifrey failsafe.  Could Moffat be planning the ultimate unison of all Doctor Who stories, that Gallifrey is behind the Doctor’s needing companions, in particular, human ones.  Why exactly in classic Dr Who was the Doctor allowed to live on Earth, even have a family?  Why was he imprisoned for years on Earth forced to work with UNIT?  We have seen that humans for a very brief time can use godlike powers to manipulate time and space.

The Doctor is more important than any single human being, as shown by his being appointed emergency President of the Earth by all the countries of the world in response to a massive alien incursion.  Earth’s leaders at least acknowledge the Doctor’s importance as Earth’s protector.  The Doctor will therefore I think be Gallifrey’s lever to force someone from Earth to pay the ultimate sacrifice to save.  It could be a companion, it could be a soldier, it could be an entire group of people such as UNIT.

Of course the Doctor would never stand for this, and he may prevent it.  But perhaps we see an analogy to what will happen at the end where the Doctor and Clara both think they are protecting the other but are not communicating, thus risking the end of their relationship.
