This reminds me of Amy in the short “Good Night” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LefejNy7mWU)

She talks about how she never had parents, then he rebooted the universe, and she had parents, and has always had parents, and how she remembers it both ways at the same time. This is the way I see the Claricles. They didn’t exist until she entered his timestream, but now they do. I would think they are normal humans, even though they are echos of Clara. They are just not the original Clara. I also assume that the CloneDoc had a nice long life with Rose, and had kids, etc. I don’t dwell on that too much. 🙂

@bivium6 “I wonder why Eleven is so sure that Twelve will need Clara.” Well, he is the Doctor. I think its a combination.
I think part of him telling/asking Clara to help him is for her as well. Take some of the focus off the “OMG he changed”. Isn’t it sometimes easier to do something knowing the other person is just as scared as you are?

But also, I think he is afraid of what will happen if Clara rejects him. Clara is the only reason he engaged again after he lost the Ponds & River. I think there’s a very real danger of him turning in on himself again if she did reject him.

@silverman, I though that excuses line was just puro calling me out. (ie both you and puro gave arguments for Clara’s actions, and I called them excuses) 🙂

The only excuse I have for the creatures in Father’s Day vs the Doctor jumping back in later on is: Fixed point? Maybe? Kind of like all of history happening at once in The Wedding of River Song. Supposedly that world (all worlds) were going to crash and burn if the Doctor didn’t die or at least appear to die.

meh. never apply logic to who. at least not with Moffat at the helm. 🙂

    Gotcha  🙂

We’ve had a lot of troll sightings this week.

Gotta make sure we don’t scare of the newbies who aren’t trolls.

    @purofilion

I suppose arguments would have been a better word.  I didn’t mean it in a negative way towards anyone posting.   🙂

Like I said, I have hopes for the future now that we’ve gotten the regen out of the way.

@silvermanre: A Good Man Goes to War – I’ve never felt the “rising higher” was a positive thing.   I think that’s exactly what River was calling him out on, and I don’t think she was out of line to do so (as someone else mentioned).  “The man who can make an army turn around at the mention of his name.”   That’s what I always thought she was referring to when she said he would rise higher than ever before.  The falling so much further is for me, the fact that he can make an army turn and run, but yet he can still be fooled.  Not only that he was fooled in the same way he was before.    (The “fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me” thing)  Also, that may be part of what he’s talking about when he said he has made mistakes.  I think his intentions were always good, but the execution got off track.

Regarding Clara again, I think the problem is in the writing, and if Moffat had made me care about her at all in the previous season, I might accept some of the excuses people are making for her.   But we only had 1 episode of her that showed any potential and that really just wasn’t enough for me.   If anything, Moffat made her a plot device for Capaldi to play off of and there is no doubt he did so wonderfully.   It’s an absolutely beautiful moment when the Doctor is asking for her to see him.   Hopefully Moffat sorts out this hit or miss writing with her moving forward.

@arbutus  I miss Donna too.  Most of my friends hated Donna, but she was my fave companion for 10.   Looking back, doesn’t Rose just look comfortable?  She took off in her jeans/t-shirt/hoodie.  Maybe its the Midwest girl in me or the fact that I’m older, but it would be jeans for me.  Seriously, can you imagine trying to put on tights while the TARDIS is spinning through the vortex?

@purofilion  Probably a script issue.  I haven’t seen Jenna in anything else so I don’t really have a feel for her as an actor.  I did enjoy Clara in Time of the Doctor when we got to see her interacting with her family.  I had hopes (still do) that we might see some better development from her character.   I think the flip-flopping was what got to me in this first episode.  She supposedly “got it” when Vastra scolded her and Vastra’s veil disappeared, but then was right back to “I don’t know who he is” and he had to beg her to see him at the end.  It felt out of sync.  Once she got it, she should have been allowed to get it and move on to acceptance.   But it’s like they had to backpedal to get that call from Matt in there.  So either let her get and move on, or move the whole “lifting the veil” scene until the end or remove it entirely.

@purofilion – “When she spoke angrily to Vastra about not liking ‘pretty boys’…”  methinks the lady doth protest too much.

I think she got called out on her shortcomings and she got defensive.

Granted I understand that knowing about him regenerating is different than experiencing it, but even if she didn’t remember being in his timestream and meeting the previous “old” versions of him, she still met the War Doctor.  She should know that he’s not always the dashing young suitor that she “fancied” on Trenzalore.  So her being shallow and needy but covering it up with smug doesn’t really improve anything for me.  If anything, it makes me want to slap her even more.   She’s simply the type of person I wouldn’t want to be around and there’s nothing in her storyline that makes me want to watch her.  She’s not even the person you love to hate.

Well, that was an exercise in patience and avoidance.   The episode didn’t air in our theaters until Monday here in the US.  So I’ve been managing to avoid all things Who-related for for a extra couple of days.

    My ramblings:

I enjoyed Capaldi’s first out tremendously.   I love the accent myself (wish David had been allowed his back in the day, I love listening to that man talk).  The attack eyebrows cracked me up.

Clara was both better and worse for me.  So I’m still kind of annoyed by her character.   She seems more human and less “perfect” than before, but still has that air of smugness about her that I just want to smack her for.   I thought the scolding Vastra gave her was needed.  Both for the character and for much of the audience who has only been with Who for the new era.   But she lost much of the development she gained when the “veil was lifted” for me by thinking the Doctor had left her behind.   Especially after he rescued her already.   (“OMG he changed.  No, it’s all good, he’s still the Doctor.  He left me.  Oh, here he is, he saved me.  Oh, he left me behind. I don’t think I know him.”  Seriously?)”

I enjoyed the extra moments with Jenny and Vastra.  Could use a little more Straxx though.   He has some unused potential.

Missy, I’m intrigued.  Don’t think it’s River though.  While there is nothing preventing River from showing up again, I don’t think this is it.  Maybe because I really just want Alex to show up one last time and “Hello Sweetie” Capaldi and see him tell her off.   (I want this even more after seeing him tell Clara “I’m not your boyfriend”.  Is that wrong?)

Matt’s phone call.  I didn’t need it and still kind of wish we didn’t have it.  But then, Matt’s not my favorite Doctor.  I can sort of see why it was needed for those who Matt is their favorite or are still new to Who.    I still think it kind of undermines progress Clara had made for me.

The story itself had some nice nods to the past, without overshadowing the fact that they were introducing a new doctor.   As a post on pinterest says “50 years and some of the creepiest monsters are still clockwork”.

RE: The dinosaurs and the history.  I imagine this the way a lot of things go in the Who-universe.  The Autons in Rose, the spaceship in David’s first Christmas special, the Cybermen attack mentioned above, the Titanic nearly crashing into the Earth.   If you like you can use the cracks to explain away all of that, or you can simply realize that in Who, they simply remember for a short time and then it fades away like it never happened.  And I’m OK with that.

I like Tennant as an actor, however he is my least favorite of the new Doctors.   First place goes to McGann or Eccleston, depending on what mood I’m in, with McGann edging his way to the top with the more I see/hear of his work.  I think part of my problem with Tennant’s era was probably in the writing.  (I personally didn’t see the chemistry between David and Billie that everyone raves over.  I thought Billie and Chris had much better chemistry on-screen. So that felt forced to me.   Then the whole Martha mooning over him ruined that season for me too.   Donna was such a breath of fresh air when she came along.)  David does have some outstanding stories, but Matt was more alien, and had those moments where you remembered, this is a 900+ year old being.   But I’m really excited to see what Capaldi can do.  I really enjoyed his first outing and while I have my doubts that he can take the top spot, he definitely look on track to bypass Tennant, if not Smith as well for me.

I’m doing all the doctors in circular gallifreyan.  I’ve done 8-12 and will be working my way backwards from here.

The images are “layered”.  The actor’s name is on top of their number.

Because I only have 5 doctors done but 6 spaces, the bottom right says “the oncoming storm”

    enjoy

This is the only Doctor Who related forum where I will actually post on.   The atmosphere here, I think is exactly what you were going for, fun with sometimes crazy outlandish ideas, but no one is insulted and never degenerates into “I’m right and f**k you, you’re wrong”  which seems to be par for the course in all other forums I’ve found so far.    I’m glad to have found this little corner of the internet.  Thanks for that!

Ten is not my favorite Doctor, but this is absolutely one of his best episodes.

The Vashta Nerada are one of the best monsters, especially when the Doctor explains that “Normally they live on road kill. But sometimes people go missing. Not everyone comes back out of the dark.” If that doesn’t give you chills I don’t know what will.

Donna is my favorite companion for ten. Her quiet observation near the end gets me every time: “Is all right special Time Lord code for really not all right at all?” “Why?” “Because I’m all right, too.”

And River’s introduction, of course. Ten’s just getting used to the idea of who she might be “Bet I like you” “Oh, you do”, and then she’s gone. The way he’s just staring at the spot where she was (I’m assuming she was vaporized) is just heartbreaking perfection. He’s already lost so much, and now he’s having to say goodbye when he’s only just met her. I think ten would have been much more open to the relationship with River vs eleven’s acting like a spoiled teenager about it.

    I made . . . well . . umm . . they’re shrinky dinks. ( also known as shrink plastic or poly shrink)

There’s a US Quarter to get a sense of scale. They are about one and half inches tall.
The one on the right was colored with a regular blue Sharpie and the one on the left a metallic blue marker by Bic (their answer to a Sharpie). The color of the metallic one reminds me more of the ninth doctor’s TARDIS which wasn’t that bright blue that was used on the eleventh doctors. I actually like it better.

@scaryb I think this is what you mean – DOCTOR: These are their forests. I’m going to seal Charlotte inside her little world, take everybody else away. The shadows can swarm to their hearts’ content. – I don’t think it specifically states how he’s going to keep people out, but it’s clearly implied that he will make sure that no one comes in the future.

I agree that there must also be other sources of “food’ for them. They state that “These are our forests. They are our meat.”  To me that implies that they might be reduced to a vegetarian diet, but they won’t be starved.

RE:  the top 10 list.  I really know better than to read comments on YouTube.  It’s either trolls or people who think their opinion in the only one in the world that matters.   *sigh*  And for some reason, people love to feed the trolls on there.

He didn’t really defeat them.  He basically said, you can have the library as long as you let me get the people out.

They start to say no but –

DOCTOR: Don’t play games with me. You just killed someone I liked. That is not a safe place to stand. I’m the Doctor, and you’re in the biggest library in the universe. Look me up.

They give him one day to get all the people out.

@purofilion – I think you’ll like this one too then.  From the side of the cot, generally thought to be the doctor’s name.

Cut out of Con-Tact paper in a medium-dark wood pattern.

Not sure where I’m going to stick this one yet.  It’s about 17 inches wide.

Got bored and made this and stuck it on my all-in-one (printer).

It’s the “writing” from the end panel of the Doctor’s cot in A Good Man Goes to War. Some say it’s River/Melody’s name others swear it’s not.  Not going to get into that argument right now.  🙂

I also like to make things as well.

Here’s an origami quilt that I made that was Doctor Who themed. Sorry about the angle, but I don’t have the necessary equipment to get a photo of a framed piece without taking a selfie in the reflection.

@purofilion  LOL!  I knew you were just taking a wild stab in the dark.  It made me laugh.

It’s a fan made “script” for lack of a better term.  It’s just letter by letter transcription.

    Quick and dirty version: http://timeturners.wikidot.com/circular-gallifreyan

And Kemipo on DeviantArt (SpellKeeper on Reddit) will take commissions. I particularly like his style.

And just because I can’t sleep, here’s a couple corrected versions of the word “winner”.   The number of lines coming off the divots and circles is what determines what the letter is.   The rules for combining lines between letters can be kind of funky, so I think that may be where he went wrong, especially if he was doing it from memory.

This would be a corrected version of what was written:

And this would be how I would write it:

I know, more info than y’all wanted, right? I just spent way too many hours last week learning about circular gallifreyan, so I tend to try translating it when I can.

@ihasgun. I finally figured out that last word was supposed to be “winner”.

But there really are some missing lines, and the e’s are misplaces if he’s using Sherman’s, which seems to be the most popular.

    midnyt @replies

@ihasgun  What did your co-worker say that was?  I came up with:  “I am the tijier” or possibly tijeir  but the “e”s aren’t really placed like I’d expect them to be.
