To be honest, the BBC description made me think that it’d start with Matt on-set somewhere, with Zoe walking up behind him.
He turns, she gets out a big red book and says:

cut to the studio, they walk on stage to audience applause.

To be honest, I love the debate around scripts and acting, as its really interesting for someone like me who only did a couple of school plays as a kid, rather than work in the industry.

Its great, because as with any art or entertainment, the ‘artwork’ is as much about the viewer’s take on it, as the artist(s) intent.
And I get an insight here to both sides (that I don’t normally see!)

I must say, you could argue either way as to both your views on Smith’s Doctor, because he vacillates (rather brilliantly on occasions for me) between cock-sure* and completely befuddled with the “sex-stuff”.

Also I’ve loved this one-episode-a-week trial of the Doctor (approximating what was it like), even though actually (now for me) it was a bunch of poor resolution a week episodes on a laptop with alcohol, rather than sitting on the floor watching the telly, with my dad’s left leg reassuringly to the left of me.

But, to your point, I can imagine an episode (even a series though that might stretch the conceit) where the characters revisited old shows. Basically similar to how the Claricle showed the Doctor which Tardis to steal.

However, if you really want to know what the old shows were like you’ll have to watch them in all their glory. They could be great, boring, confusing, challenging, emotional, dull…. yep – its a series that’s been going for 50 years!

If you want pointers as to which are the best to see, I’d head over to the Faces of the Doctor thread or the Doctor WHo memories thread.

People moan about the special effects of the time date certain episodes, but the storytelling usually compensates for that (eg The Talons of Weng Chiang)

ah @shazzbot, in terms of why Talking Heads isn’t more popular, I’d warrant a guess that its name-checked a lot by new brit bands (though I sadly don’t actually follow them or less-sadly read the music press).
The 80’s revival is huge at the moment in the UK hipster scene, so Talking Heads etc will be copied and stolen from in un-equal measure.

(I’m a big fan of Picasso’s quote on copying and stealing – my take on that quote is to copy is to know something is good but not know why (maybe others have told you or gut feel hasn’t hit critical understanding) – but to steal is to know why its good and therefore to be able to use it in another context or use it to influence another idea).

(oh, I’d waffle on about that annoyingly so will stop as ‘drink has been taken’).

but a lot of post-punk will be namechecked I’d guess (Talking Heads, XTC etc) but its hard to ‘copy’ this clever stuff without sounding derivative (if that bothers them).

Hi @Shazzbot – before I get into the other stuff, one little memory that Pirates you made me think of was “I am the Pirate Kiiiinnnnngggg” from Pirates of Penzance.

My brother who hummed “Starry starry night, hmm hmmm hm hmm hmmm hm hm hmmm, hmm hmm hm hm hmm hm hmmm, hm hmmm hm hm hm hmmm, starry starry night, hmm hmm hm hmm hmmm hm hm hmmm, hmm hmm hm hm hmm hm hmmm, hm hmmm hm hm hm hmmm [ad nauseum]” happened to be the Pirate King in a school production at the age of 9.

He couldn’t hold a tune in a bucket so thank god this was before phone recording, but fair (school)play to him.

me? I got to play Jesus for a few years. (“Mary, wiarrrryoooweeeeepinnnn?”)

and a welsh bank manager (at the age of 9 or 10???!).

again, thank god noone recorded those school musicals.

In shame I think the first single I bought was Money for Nothing!
Unfortunately I listened to their other stuff around that time and though I liked some (Blind springs to mind) I should’ve headed straight to their older stuff. ah well, made it a few years later!

As a response, I could be a bit obvious and put Sledgehammer (for the animated sequence in the videos) but seems a bit lazy and anyway, the Intruders at the Palace concert I mentioned above had David Byrne headlining with a brass band called Les Miserables.
This song is 2/3 of the way through their performance and is kinda the highlight, so if you’re a completist then head to the first track [Edit: especially Shazzbot if you’re a fan of Byrne as the next link is the payoff from listening from the beginning – or was at least to me].
However, life is short so here’s “In the Future” which begins with some of the most beautiful poetry I have ever heard.

If nothing else, the stage show of Chang’s gives us some drama (“why are you moving the cards??!?”) as well as the rather nice mirroring of Chang’s “magic” cabinet and Chiang’s ‘magic’ cabinet.

I don’t think I saw this as a kid, but I wonder how lost I’d have been wondering whether the Doctor said “Chang” or “Chiang” at times.

I am loving this and everyone’s appreciation and discussion around the writer’s craft – it’s a real education for me!

Now, non-“sexy” (in that its not important whether we men and women find them sexually appealing even if their characterisation includes their attractions to the men in the films) villains on screen could include Kathy Bates in Misery (jeeeezus), and Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched in ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’.

Now, I think you want actresses and I’ve named 2 “non-sexy” ones (though either is attractive as is Gina McKee who you underestimate – she has ‘something’ in a way that’s not obvious), but here’s a few literary female villains that may just prompt someone to remember “ooh I saw Fiona Shaw in that” such as Lady Macbeth, Clytemnestra, Medea etc

But were you actually looking for a list of non-sexy villains whose villainy wasn’t due to their non-sexy-ness?

Your choices had loads to do with the lyrics (and why wouldn’t they??!!?) bu I’m more of a music person (in same way as with comics the artist is for me the most critical aspect and I can’t see through the crosshatching to see the words).

Now, my memories of McCoy…. are a bit odd.

Basically, I’d stopped watching during Colin Baker’s reign and saw a couple of McCoy’s but not really followed it much. Seeing the documentaries shared on this forum, makes me think I was probably put off by the “light entertainment” element, and things like Robin of Sherwood for breaking the Who habit. And if you can’t say Robin of Sherwood without half-singing “the hooded man” in a Clannad-inspired way, then you know what I mean.

So, I won’t bore you with my non-memories.
Instead (I’ll bore you with) a too-short story of being invited by a female work colleague that I kinda fancied, for dinner in ~2001. I went to the address she gave me and it was a typical (for me) North London arty terraced house – lots of small original hand-drawn sketches and limited prints on the walls, literary clutter etc etc.
In fact, as I looked at the bookshelf I saw there were half a dozen annuals and books of the McCoy era Doctor with Ace on the shelves.
“Do you live here?”
“No – I’m flat sitting”
“Who does live here?”
“Oh I don’t know him, he’s a friend of someone I know. Actor I think”
“Jeezus – this is Sylvester McCoy’s house!”
“Who?” [add your own “who’s on third?” gag here]
I looked again at the artwork on the walls – lots of clowns, jesters, Commedia dell Arte etc.
“Jeezus – this is Sylvester McCoy’s house!”
“Who?”

[sigh]
as this conversation wasn’t going anywhere, I started to concentrate on her rather than the house.
That didn’t go anywhere either.

Lovely woman. Lovely house. and now I realise a lovely guy.

Hope he doesn’t mind me failing to woo a woman in his gaff.
