haven’t seen the episode yet but wondering if Missy said she chose Clara does that then mean she might be the lady in the shop ??
18 October 2014 at 19:37 #33717@bluesqueakpip I enjoyed reading your post- I think the ‘Doctor-hero” which is a special class of hero
18 October 2014 at 02:49 #33701@ Barnable Hi — Yeah the conductor was a retired soldier and Missy theory is that she collects soldiers
but didn’t collected him ? Hm ?
On the teleporter – So the Doc was messing with it on the train and the next scene on the Beach he tells
Clara that he used it to teleport everyone onto the Tardis and dropped them on that Planet
I think the Doctor still had the teleporter device- not Perkins
However I still think Perkins got some free and alone time by himself on the Tardis ?
He was still lingering around apparently on his own until the Doctor returned from hanging out
on the beach ?
So why did the Doctor leave Perkins alone on the Tardis and did the Doctor really trust him to be
alone there?
No idea !!! But it still doesn’t add up to me18 October 2014 at 01:37 #33699@ Soundworld Yes Miss Missy- what can I say besides we need to see her again soon !!
Is she a Guardian of the Nethersphere or a Trickster or what exactly? Cant wait to get
another glimpse of her so we can have something to say about her place in the story.
Also her lieutenant Seb .
Regarding my reference before of the Josesph Campbell and the heroes journey.
Its the strange world of myths and adventures but also rites of passage and
beliefs/spiritual aspects which is also a part of the CapDoctor’s journey/story arc this series
and how he’s trying much more to connect to new different self17 October 2014 at 16:42 #33685@idiotsavon – I agree with your take on the belief in heroes – and I also keep thinking this goes back to when the Doctor asks Clara ‘am I a good Man’ – that was central and very upfront at the start of this series
All these different belief options we have had with each new episode forms for me a circle to get to the Doctors
conclusion-
We are all being taken on that philosophical journey in addition to all the individual weekly adventures
Its been very Joseph Campbell for me but also the screenwriting textbook by Christopher Vogler that I reference
here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Writer's_Journey:_Mythic_Structure_for_Writers –its as if SM has been
very influenced by this book for his take this series too– and I think this concept is working out amazingly well !!
When looking up Vogler for this post – I found that he has a connection to BBC writers room – I find that very interesting – this has to be within SM’s sphere of awareness and obviously a strong influence as well17 October 2014 at 04:49 #33670@idiotsavon Well I think perhaps I take your meaning —–that you can have “real’ or
realistic people with good intentions portrayed [in any genre of storytelling} and they
can still also be flawed anti-heroes ?Anyway- I am being ‘required’
so I need to humbly request to continue our conversation later ugh !
nite L.17 October 2014 at 04:20 #33668@idiotsavon- Yes however I haven’t been able to get my head around how it all completely connects with the story arc yet – but I blame Perkins!! That character has sideswiped me totally and taken me off topic ! lol
So any brilliant contributions of how all the Belief puzzle blends in is much appreciated at this point !! 🙂17 October 2014 at 04:09 #33666btw— the comment above was meant at @idiotsavon [ oops ]
17 October 2014 at 04:07 #33665I agree with Janette re: all the comments she made on the Mummy page-
Personally I have always simply preferred Imaginary places and people. That’s because I find it more palatable than the real world – I have never had much of a appreciation for soapy soap opera-it always feels vaguely demeaning – [but that’s just me] However It seems to me quite honestly that’s what some of the folks on the Mummy page have found exception with. The fact that there is an aspect in the Clara/Danny story that they are finding a bit demeaning in the way that story has developed thus far17 October 2014 at 02:35 #33659@idiotsavon – The first series of Star Trek was roughly at the time of Man going to the Moon and then the Carl Sagan series Cosmos happened so all together they reinforced an completely new notion of our future having amazing possibilities –
When it was picked up again years later the stories dealt with social issues even more in the script writing – but I think this is the forum for the Mummy episode ????? 🙂17 October 2014 at 01:56 #33656@idiotsavon– I think Star Trek has had a massive effect on society !! The technology- the stories- the charecters – and social debates too ! There were tons of firsts about that show – When I was a kid I
watched it in the same way I watch Doctor Who and have the same kind of respect for it17 October 2014 at 01:44 #33654Regarding Perkins – [he’s been a bit of a thorn sticking me in my grey matter] -I thought yesterday that it was
his briefcase full of paperwork that Clara and Maizie found in the baggage car- that maybe he had stashed it in there. So when the scientists were all doing their investigating in the morphed lab car why didn’t he go fetch it to share with everyone?
Why wouldn’t he do that ? Because if he did it would come out that he wasn’t really an engineer- It only reinforces for me the fact that he was hiding who he really was- which isn’t an Engineer – my hunch is that the
briefcase might of belonged to him15 October 2014 at 22:19 #33604Got a question for anyone – When Clara was stuck with Maizie in the baggage car she found a briefcase filled with information about the Foretold – I am wondering who did that briefcase belong to ?? I cant see that answer
Could it have it belonged to Perkins ?? If so that would also prove Perkins has been tracking this for some time
@fatmaninabox – I like your idea about him – but I still also think he might have been messing around with the Tardis in which case I still feel that there is something very odd – I really believe the Doctor would never invite anyone to do anything to ‘his’ Tardis ! Where was Perkins when the Doctor was on the beach ? Was he
left alone in the Tardis ?
@barnable – I will re-watch but it wasn’t my impression that Perkins installed the teleporter ? why do you think that ?15 October 2014 at 19:25 #33600@ spider GEEZELOUISE !!! what a tease lol 🙂
14 October 2014 at 21:26 #33568@ geoffers –33 I a very powerful illuminati number – http://www.cuttingedge.org/news/n1766.cfm
33 levels in the mason order- 33rd parallel – lots of mystical stuff – google the meaning of the
number 33 – all sorts of goodies14 October 2014 at 06:54 #33535@ Barnable –re: the engineer tinkering around inside the Tardis’ pipes I totally agree! The Doctor was outside on the beach with Clara leaving Perkins alone in there? I smell something nasty about that too – so maybe that’s why Perkins chose not to travel with him -because of his tinkering? Maybe that’s why I felt the Doctor gave him a suspicious-y look when he said no to traveling. Was the Doctor wondering about Perkins messing around down there? I still wonder why he was on on that space train ?
another mysterious character to my mind13 October 2014 at 23:01 #33526@thebeast- I saw a comment elsewhere that someone thought Gus sounded a lot like Seb??
Still cant get the notion out of my head that the Engineer is a bit like Moriarity in this and Capdoc was a bit like Sherlock ? I have seen discussions about crossover between the 2 series here before – anyway I do get a vibe that there was something a bit dark about Frank Skinner in how he played the part –
But as Tom Baker Doc was fond of saying ”who knows”13 October 2014 at 01:40 #33473One more thing about the Engineer calling himself Perkins – he handed over all the manifests etc regarding
passengers and trip joking that maybe he was already looking into ‘this’ ?
Maybe he is/isn’t just a train engineer ? yes/no/not sure
But I would like to see him come back in a future episode13 October 2014 at 00:16 #33470There has been The Master, The Rani. The Doctor, etc. and now ‘The Engineer’
I have a new conjecture – all ideas welcome !
On my second re watch I really felt that this is an introduction to the possibility of a new ‘The”
Could the engineer have also had some other connection to GUS ? no idea but he came up with the ‘it takes approx. 66 seconds to move out of phase’ answer and some other info for the Doctor pretty quickly
I think that in some way at least he has had more a part of the Gus set up
So my new current hunch is that maybe The Engineer knew all along who the Doctor was and even maybe the original
invitation sent to the Doctor came from him ?12 October 2014 at 17:56 #33448@phileasf –yes ! Seb-Gus and who else as abbreviations of ancient saints as part of this Faith/Belief arc ? we might have missed another abbreviated saint name in a previous episode ? So I will go back and check over some of that re: is this some hidden clue/meaning – might be maybe ??
big longshot though – but I have as Clara said ‘the addiction’ 🙂12 October 2014 at 06:06 #33417btw- Badwolf said it does have a feeling of Voyage of the Damned the GUS voice in particular and I wonder if that was the same actor used again ?
There is a suspicious some odd sort of feeling about that engineer Perkins as if he isn’t really just a engineer so wonder if he will turn up in the future again ?
That was a interesting conversation on the beach with Clara about saving people and also at the very end about ‘mission accomplished’ between Clara and Danny
Cant wait to see everyone’s comments and detecting – [seen terrific detecting on this forum !]12 October 2014 at 04:42 #33416HI all – I have lots of questions about the engineer – loved the Foxes rendition of the Queen song- loved the Jelly babies ‘cameo’ – loved the Agatha Christie homage – found the Mummy very impressive -two episodes in a row ending with the beach/ocean scene ? [not sure that’s anything] – liked this one a lot and another strong performance from Capdoc- no one saved this time around by Missy — another soldier[ the mummy]—-Clara’s should I stay or should I go is getting a bit weird but on the whole it just felt done nicely–
10 October 2014 at 20:04 #33344@ idiotsavon I have heard that its already Jumper weather in England — oh dear ! We are having what
the weather people call a ‘high pressure system’ – meaning very warm plus mixed with the fall colors
makes it a favorite time of the year — I bet this Saturday morning the whole town will turn out to the farmers markets – even though its feels warm I’d like to make a big pot of soup so looking forward to finding some ingredients there
I think that SM was looking at his giant story board and he had a hunch that everyone would be ready to ‘romp’ too ! 🙂10 October 2014 at 16:18 #33342Morning everyone from California- its another very pretty day here and I just got to watch some new vids that popped up about the next Doctor episode on BBC America/Youtube during my coffee time – this new one looking like so much great fun !!!!
9 October 2014 at 22:39 #33316@purofilion I think all of us were “Clara'”-fied in this episode re: how it seemed to wrap so much around her character – 🙂
8 October 2014 at 04:39 #33252!idiotsavon I like the way you think! RE: the Doctor was up to something
I had a notion that scene of the Doctor abruptly leaving was possibly a smokescreen but I couldn’t wrap my head around how – same thing goes for Clara getting so bent out of shape at him for doing that- It was quite a surprise considering all the time that they have been traveling together and suddenly she seems to be losing her “faith” in him [ a lot of folks here seem to have felt the same thing} interestingly every episode thus far references faith some how some way- eventually I guess we all will know how it all gets pulled together and I am as curious as anyone to see how it all will shake out7 October 2014 at 01:03 #33189@ JimboMcMaster -I totally agree with your take- said up at the beginning that I saw it all about pro-life and pro space exploration either intentional or not – moral arguments for both about making choices and the responsibility that comes in making them- the pseudo-science never bothers me – I mean you said it with “reality bomb” etc. – but there was lots of good tension in this episode – cracks in the relationship between Clara and the Doctor – SM does like the “cracks’ device in all its different forms
6 October 2014 at 23:33 #33176@ pufferfish – Clara might not know for a fact yet that she is preggers- and drinking a glass of wine is not a problem -its drinking the whole bottle:)
6 October 2014 at 23:29 #33174@ purifilion- well it makes sense to make her a new Mom if she is going to be written out of the series – she cant travel with an infant- and she was almost in tears at the end of the story- some women can get all weird like that
6 October 2014 at 23:09 #33170@ purofilion possibly Clara might be behaving hormonal from pregnancy- I thought that might be an undercurrent at one point in the story
6 October 2014 at 04:19 #33116@ JaneeteB The Doctor left Clara behind in Deep Breath too- He has morphed into a completely different Doctor from 11- and a lot more heavy handed which is why Clara has such anxiety- its having a psychological effect on her – In Deep Breath Matt-doctor called Clara to say that 12 was still him- but he isn’t really is he
She will continue to have trouble adapting because I think she feels shortchanged and her unsettledness will continue to probably be a theme throughout this whole season -For the Doctors point of view I think he wants more from Clara then she wants to give
ps– I liked the moon/egg concept- really thought it was eggcellent5 October 2014 at 23:43 #33083@ mello-yello U know I like your idea about Courtney- wonder if those were her real parents at the parent night
but SM likes to play with anagrams – I figured out that Tasha Lem means the rebirth of Mel and I played with the name Courtney Woods and I so far came up with ‘yes u won doctor’ – hm ?? what shall we make of this ?
– This forum has made me a bonkerszoid ! lol5 October 2014 at 17:36 #33053For the rest of my life I shall look at the Moon in the night sky and think of it as an egg = egg-cellent !!
the sci-fi of the past didn’t always get the science right – so the sci-fi of the present doesn’t necessarily have to either – I think of Doctor Who as Sci-fi fantasy – that’s how I manage to get my head round all the
odd inconsistent bits5 October 2014 at 03:36 #33009#Badwolf- it wasn’t my intent to paste that 1- I don’t know how its popping up!!! but I agree it does look interesting – Im gonna give this 1 more try – if it doesn’t work please find a way to make me pay – lol !!
hoping it works this time !
5 October 2014 at 03:10 #33007I wont keep messing up the thread- my copy paste thingy is broken – aahh !!
5 October 2014 at 03:09 #33006I hope the copy/paste thing works right this time !!! sorry folks it picked up something else
in that last post ???5 October 2014 at 03:06 #33005Hi all — So this was partly a pro-life argument and also pro-space exploration argument episode
Here’s something a bit on/off topic I recently saw a vid on you tube
this vid has to do with Nasa holding on to old nukes to use in space to blast apart asteroids- seemed oddly appropriate to shareI just saw this and like the rest of you will need to do a replay to zoom in on it all- I get to see it later
then most of you here do because of where I am
But since I started that whole belief/faith concept list earlier on I will give you my take for this episode
I think that it simply is the belief in yourself to make the right/best decisions – the Doctor said ‘I think you did the right thing’ – this makes me wonder about this belief arc and where it is going and whyNo Missy- [as I sometimes say– big bummer city !!!]
3 October 2014 at 03:27 #32880
saw this tonight on you tube everyone – looks fun !!1 October 2014 at 23:00 #32847If I may contribute to the conversation re: England — My most favorite place to vacation- have wonderful friends there- absolutely love the North regions – Yorkshire. lake district, Peak district !! Harrogate etc. etc. it has a wonderful wildness and not nearly as touristy- everywhere you go there is gorgeousness !! Wish I can get back there at least every year – everyone should put it on the places to see list for sure !
1 October 2014 at 19:48 #32832Does anyone know what type of insect the “Vore” were in the 8th doctors Galifrey cronicles novel?? just wondering cause the next episode has spider like creatures on the moon –
In that novel they invade Earth- could the moon be where there were before the came to earth and if so is SM
bringing them back ? It might be a connection to the Compassion tardis story in that novel and therefore possibly could be the Nethersphere concept also— a giant stretch I guess but…just curious30 September 2014 at 23:31 #32800@devilisrobby – yes !! in wiki it did say an alien that become a ‘tardis’ — im trying to figure it out
thanks for fixing me 🙂30 September 2014 at 23:20 #32798@geoffers 1 more thought – this was one of the last 8th Doctor novels — SM brought back the 8th in Night of the Doctor — hmmm ??
30 September 2014 at 23:13 #32796@geoffers — I like the way you are thinking re: Missy ! I cant recall the last time Ive been so gripped by a Doctor Who story arc
Ive been reading about the Galifrey Cronicles novel on Wiki and learned about another Timelord called Compassion that apparently survived the time war- Idiotsavon pointed out to me that another name for Compassion is ‘Mercy’ which is sort of close to Missy – it also spoke about the Matrix on Galifrey – again like Cal/papel mainframe the matrix is also a vast supercomputer – Im wondering if all these bits and pieces are being woven together by SM ?
At this point I am on the same page as you re: Clara – and I am also sure the chess board has to be a clue just because of the size of the thing = sort of ‘don’t miss this’30 September 2014 at 16:13 #32777@serahni — thanks very much for the info Re: matrix- compassion tardis etc. its obvious that SM is fully aware of all these references and has of course drawn upon them to create the Missy arc – all the computer and neverland/rasillon stuff and so on- I found it very enlightening !!!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_(Doctor_Who)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page30 September 2014 at 02:57 #32730@barnable – 1 more thought- don’t forget that the papel mainframe was a military force!
30 September 2014 at 02:52 #32729@barnable- I was more intrigued by the paperwork on the round bulletin board out of focus- she didn’t greet the pc- one of her lieutenants did-so maybe the pc is lower down in the ranks – I didn’t think hospital but I do imagine that emptiness will be filling up – maybe we will see more bulletin boards with paperwork that we can see and read for clues- In the Silence in the Library episode they had all those children that looked alike- I wonder if they will make clones out of the people they collect to make an army ?? I would really like more clues !!!!
Ugh !
On other topic- really liked the way Clara swiped her nose in the way Tom Baker Doctor used to do – very nice29 September 2014 at 23:28 #32713@barnable I wonder if Missy will turn out to be a kind of Care taker ? but I think most don’t at this point- I will be keeping an open mind – I still strangely get a River vibe about Missy- and River certainly was a kind of caretaker – I still get a CAL vibe about the Nethersphere- but its of course still to soon to tell
28 September 2014 at 23:37 #32660@Blenkinsopthebrave— I recall that flick somewhat- but the receptionist greeting the pc never referred to where they were as heaven- only Nethersphere/afterlife/promised land – and I have a hunch that the pc may have
not been acquired by Missy for the same reason as the others in her plan – she doesn’t speak with him- only gives him a casual glance -I still think its more like a Cal/papal mainframe kind of saving
For me it also took me back to when Harry dies and meets Dumbledore in the big white replica of the train station — this Missy mystery has a tight grip on me !!28 September 2014 at 21:45 #32652Re-watching the Missy land bit at the end- I wonder if Missy didn’t greet the pc cause he didn’t qualify for her conditions. Maybe she came into the room to just get a glance at him – perhaps he was ‘acquired’ not because he has any particular skill but then why? Really wish the paperwork on the wall behind the pc wasn’t so out of focus
28 September 2014 at 19:29 #32639Also in the white room – there is a round bulletin board behind the pc’s head- curious what all the paperwork on that board says —- that scene reminded me a bit of when Harry Potter dies and goes to the “white place’ and
meets Dumbledore -
