@craig – you’ve helped individuals and their friends and families a huge amount.

There was a time that a friend and I were due to have one of our ‘meet up for a few pints’ every 3 or 4 months. We’d done it for years.
This time it drifted and I didn’t drop him a note.
And yes, then it was too late. I don’t ‘blame’ myself but… but. Its easy to drop someone a note.

Also (unrelated) I remember taking a call from someone I didn’t know (met for 5mins and was a friend of a friend) who decided I was exactly who he needed to talk to while having a very disturbing episode, as he believed that the book Good Omens was true and written about him.
I didn’t know him, didn’t know the book and was wet (I’d got out of the bath to take the call), afraid and worried. Not sure which led to the shivering on the stairs the most.
He jumped off the call mid-way through and I tried to alert the person I knew him through. Luckily he was ok.
But I remember how much it affected me. I can still recall the feelings 27 years later.

Take care of yourself and this may sound weird, but if you want to call the Samaritans – even just to say “this has happened – what should I say??” then I’m sure they’d understand both advice to give and the need for you to talk to someone.

I’m sure we had this tune during the series but I can’t remember.
Takes a min or two to get going.

I tried to find the lyrics and discovered that the lyricist went through their own conversion – quite a story.

So, its the 30th anniversary of the Web.

Tim Berners Lee [Heavenly Chorus Sound #4] thinks that things may be going in the wrong direction, but I’ll ignore that for now (is the web merely a reflection of the world we live in..?).

Anyway, this is the music thread so I thought I’d look at music from 1989.

A couple of bands had their debut albums while others were onto their second.
But what choons was Tim nodding along to when he was submitting plans at CERN..?

Lets start slow with I Wanna Be Adored from The Stone Roses’ debut album

But the year is rowdier with quite a bit of heavier Indie (here’s Debaser from the Pixies’ second album and Nirvana was sullenly being introduced to many with this (but I’ll be kind and link to About A Girl from Nirvana’s otherwise noisier debut Bleach).
Last and for many, least, are Post-Rock purveyors of head-music Slint with this little ditty Rhoda.

But there was much more than amped up noise – Madonna was having fun telling us to Express Yourself (though to keep with the noise, Ciccone Youth aka Sonic Youth were mucking about experimenting with drum machines on Platoon II from their Whitey Album)

Perhaps the most innovation was happening in Rap with the Beastie Boy’s seminal Paul’s Boutique – c’mon everyone, lets see you shake yer rump

But (I know), lets lighten up this look back at 1989 with some Daisy Age murmurings.

Ok – so I am reliably informed that today is Douglas Adams’ birthday (and its still his birthday even though he did die far too young, many years ago).

So here is an address made by Neil Gaiman about knowing Douglas, writing, writers and immortality. Its Neil Gaiman, so there are many pauses, a mainly whimsical tone, notes on the difference between metaphor and simile and not being prepared for sharp turns in pathos.

The camerawork starts as soon as the guy hit the ‘On’ button (which admittedly is the best time for equipment to start) so it means if you watch it, you have about 17mins to find your seat; sort out a drink; nip to the loo; finish that conversation; say hello to someone who you thought might be coming along but weren’t sure but there she is and oooh what is she wearing?
And then turn off your phone with a bit of palaver but making sure everyone can see you’re doing it.

And then Neil starts speaking.

If you do skip the initial mins, just remember that its in benefit of Save the Rhino, something that was dear to Douglas Adams.

I know, I know but for some reason I never had it until now.

Which meant that although I knew all the great singles, I hadn’t heard the other version of Voodoo Chile which is a long blues, with some fiery organ from Stevie Winwood.

so, to carry on the theme of “this guy hasn’t a clue about music”, here’s the ‘latest’ choon I’m digging (man) fom the Ultimate yah yah of Geetar songs (or whatever the multiple CD compilation was).

For me this band growing up was “urgh, don’t like” due to whatever was in the charts at the time rather than think “maybe they did other stuff…”.

So this pops up on the collection and I’m thinking “this is bonkers. This is great! This is all over the place! Is it ‘heavy’ (that downward chord progression) of jazzy fusion or light/Eagles rock or “ooh err” comedic-horns or slightly clumsy rock-geetar or…
well i guess its all these things (though one things it isn’t is headphones music – its sooo much better just through speakers!).

However, I know everyone here will go “oh that lot, yeah but I heard that loads” its just a new thing for me!

I only heard about Peter York’s death a few minutes before checking in here and I’ll admit a certain “awwwww no”.
I grew up seeing them on the TV, sandwiched between The Banana Splits and I thought of them as a joke band, though couldn’t figure out how some of their songs were so damn good.

Sometimes it can take me years to unlearn what is perfectly obvious to everyone else who didn’t decide to wear dumb(ing) blinkers.

Pedant’s already linked a great tune and I haven’t heard much better on the media today (ok Daydream Believer is a fantastic tune and he played keyboards on it, but when heard in context of someone passing, you think “Davey Jones?”).

@thane16 – it might surprise you to learn that I haven’t heard Meddle (I know, I know) but that reminded me for some reason to Us and Them (which I have heard before – yay team me!)

Thankfully (due to me looking for something about him) this popped up in my right hand panel of YouTube.
Sometimes YT proffers stuff that isn’t bad.

You’re right about A Bit of Fry and Laurie sometimes trying too hard. As I cycled through a bunch of their sketches on YT I was struck with how it felt like a couple of Pythons doing Two Ronnies sketches.

Still, they hit me and a couple of mates just at the right moment (we’d’ve been around 17) and going into school quoting from the previous evening’s episode reduced us to fits of giggling.

But I wasn’t politicised at all at that time (I was still quite young!) and even when I was of an age you’d have expected me to be more ‘woke’ I almost certainly wasn’t.
Even though I watched TV like Are you Being Served, It Ain’t Half Hot Mum and the execrable Mind Your Language, all I felt was a weird “erm laughing at someone for that – that’s not right is it?” but without the guts to actually ask anyone.

Thank god for The Young Ones and the rest of the alternative scene (though my absolutely thing-that-nailed-it-at-exactly-the-right-time was A Bit Of Fry And Laurie*).

Anyway, none of that is music unless…

btw – its been kinda fun going through the weird routes YT and my own library take me when looking at 80’s and 90’s music.

But by goodness I was listening to some miserable stuff!!
Dunno what it is about guys when they’re in their teens-and-twenties (tweenties?) but I managed to get walloped by Indie, Shoe-gazing then Grunge.

I mean I loved it and had a helluva lot of fun, but the music isn’t what you’d call “fun”.

I have a lot of fondness for PJ Harvey (and others like Bjork and St Vincent) in that I don’t like all their stuff (perhaps even most of it) as they try really hard to explore stuf (sometimes maybe trying too hard!). But I’d rather that than listen to an artist being ‘safe’.

I know that PJ Harvey was very influenced by Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, so that might give you some inroads to explain just what the hell she was doing with chords etc!

Now, 80’s and 90’s music like Ian Morris /Cold Chisel etc sounding so particular…
I wonder if its not just the song craft but also the production.
There are lots of bits of instruments across multiple tracks (guitars, bass, synth, singing etc) that are all filling out the song quite evenly and smooothly – there are no gaps in the sound nor anything at the extreme ends.

Maybe that was felt to be more ‘radio friendly’ (ie small speakers on a household radio)?

(though I wouldn’t say that of Devo who you mentioned – the few tracks of theirs I’ve heard I think are really different).

The Ian Moss track No Sense reminds me of the Police in its Funk Reggae rhythm (though Police never did those bluesy guitar things – they were quite avant garde in terms of guitar I was surprised to later learn when I went back and listened).

Meanwhile here’s me diving in quickly to post something for Burn’s Night but also as a reference to Hugh McIlvanney who passed away.

He was a Scottish sports journalist but that description is paltry – he was a writer.
Here’s what he wrote about Muhammad Ali after beating George Foreman in the incredible ‘Rumble in the Jungle’.

Anyway, better plaudits will come from others.
For Burns Night I thought of this which is lively and fun but I looked for the song Ali on the same album, but cannot find it online at all.

So here is something less up-tempo and a bit more elegiac from Rufus.
This may be a bit tin-eared on my part, but meant in love.

Hugh McIlvanney has passed away.
This is a lovely tribute from BBC Scotland.

It suggests that rather than ‘just’ call him a ‘sports journalist’ is to pigeon-hole his writing [I guess in a similar way to genre/sci fi writers suffer].
That tribute has a few passages he wrote and here’s one as I think its illustrative.

On Johnny Owen, the Welsh bantamweight who died after a title fight in Los Angeles in 1980:

“Outside the ring he was an inaudible and almost invisible personality. Inside, he became astonishingly positive and self-assured. He seemed to be more at home there than anywhere else. It is his tragedy that he found himself articulate in such a dangerous language.”

Don’t worry that the forum seems to be talking about weather/ horticulture/ ear worms or best decade of music (apologies) – I’m sure everyone here loves to have new members diving in, being brave enough to say “hi” and basically getting involved.

Did you see the most recent series?
Did you Like it?
Its ok to say “no” to either of those questions – the great thing about this place (at least for me) is that reading others’ thoughts helps me understand why I liked or didn’t like an episode, due to writing or production or a better understanding of my own sensibilities etc.

And even if conversation of this series dries up then we’ve still got favourite doctors, favourite companions, discussions about Time and morality and ethics and… well, we’ll always have the music!

@pedant – wow, you were obviously far hipper/cool than I ever was with the Tony Robinson.
I think I was probably listening to Dire Straits [head-nodding-chin-stroking] and whatever my brother was listening to (ie whatever his mate Simon was listening to eg Stranglers, Doors).

So, we’ve settled that ear worm and I must pointlessly stand up for a maligned decade (ie not really maligned by @geoffers – I’m just using that as an excuse).
The 90’s – they weren’t all bad .

We had Fey Post Pop, Indie, Grunge, Dance / Electronica and probably other stuff.
And although I feel I’m going to bat for a decade that probably wasn’t my ‘favourite’* I’ll start my defence with a tune that was the best opening to a live gig I’ve ever seen**.

Leeds Students and locals packed like sardines in the Duchess of York (a pub venue on the UK circuit for bands that could get one or two hundred at a gig).
The band in a line on stage, guitar strumming the opening 5 bass notes ad nauseum without any drum backing, waiting for the crowd to be quiet.
dah dah dah da dum; dah dah dah da dum; dah dah dah da dum…

Crowd is restless and noisy and hot and unusually tightly crammed together (maybe 400 at this gig).
The entire student crowd wincing as a local shouts “show us yer tits!”.
The low-guitar-strum repeating now in a act of defiance for a further minute or two until the crowd actually get quiet.

Then this tiny woman with huge guitar and band launch into a brilliant brilliant set.

I knew nothing about the band before going in other than my mate liked them.
On leaving I wanted to buy the album somehow at midnight (and marry Harvey or whatever).

This would have been 1992 and a prelude to their bigger set linked below (thankfully without the Leeds knuckleheads).

So not a bad star in the early 90’s!

I was terribly cruel and wrong about “Brisbane’s only band”.
Mr. Google has told me that Powderfinger were from Brisbane as well as a couple I’ll admit to not knowing.

I’m afraid it will sadden you to know that although I’m still smiling at the almost-impossibility of guessing the song, I don’t think I ever will!
I think it might be one of those ‘if you know it, you know it’ things*

BUT, Caravan Palace – what a song and video!!! I loved it! Honestly its brilliant. And the animation is really good.
And Zappa – bloomin’ heck.
That’s where Jazz and I part as acquaintances and I look forward to their less-free cousin to return.
Its a weird and wavy line, but though I could do some Art Ensemble of Chicago, I just got lost in the noodles of jazz especially if it was quite electric.
But also the stuff @thane16 says Puro likes about the screechy 20th century classical stuff.

Now that’s probably a whole thread on its own – songs I heard that I loved but didn’t know were covers.

Anyway, I reckon what we need are some mad detective skillz to uncover the source of all this, but not sure where to get them….

However, I really did think about music piped over a shop, as its a story I have of my own stupidity.
Forgive me if I’ve already bored everyone with this before but… a long time ago…

It was mid 80’s and I was working my ‘Saturday job’ at WH Smiths (a large newsagent chain in the UK that sold newspapers, magazines, books, sweets/candy and cassette tapes and CDs).
I started at Christmas on the front-tills but I was quickly moved after my first shift.
It seems my mental meltdown on the till had resulted in it being short a few pounds.
They were very good about it and instead of accusing me of pocketing money, the manager pulled me to one side when I went to go in for my second weekend:
“erm, would you prefer to work on the music department?”

Jackpot!

So I got to talk to people, put the cases and sleeves back on the shelves and used the till only when necessary (without the mind-numbing incessant repetition on the main tills that had led to my mental blancmanging).

Anyway, so I’m probably 15 or 16, and having a good time with the other 3 people on the music desk.
It was at the end of the day and one of them (probably a year or two older than me) said “[whisht] do you wanna put something on?”
We basically played “Now That’s What I Call Music 9” or Whitney Houston or whatever was Top Ten.
Maybe it was deliberate on his part (it was around 5pm) but I was “yeah! I’ve got one!”

So I scurried into the CDs, pulled one out, stuck it into the CD player and hit Play.

Duhh duh duh.
DuhDuhDuhDuhDuhh.
Duhh duh duh.
DuhDuhDuhDuhDuhh.

So I head out to put some cassette cases back on the shelves and as you will with a song you know, begin to mumble/sing the lyrics about a line ahead of what’s sung.

So, imagine a sixteen year old in horrible nylon/polyester grey, mumbling/singing under his breath a song that hadn’t been a ‘hit’ for ten years or so.
And then realising what the next line was and
{in slow motion – internal dialogue “Noooooooooooooooooo!”}

I raced to the desk and behind it the ‘off button’ for the music that is playing in Smith’s that the hundred or so Saturday shoppers and pensioners ‘just popping in’ can hear-but-not-hear.

“Oh shit!
There goes the charabang
Looks like I’m gonna be stuck here the whole summer
Well, what a bummer”

I was still on the wrong side of the desk, and weirdly all sound just before this was sung stopped; all conversations, tills, clacking and shuffling of people on cheap carpet stopped so that the “shit” was heard very very clearly across the whole store.

The manager was at my elbow in milliseconds and quietly said to the people behind the desk “I think we can turn it off now”.
Mortified I weakly mumbled and went back to behind the desk and finished up the day expecting to be my last.

However, I managed to hold that job down for another few months until O (or was it A?) levels really needed more of my weekend time.

However I was always asked for tunes around 5pm for some reason.

(I so wish the song that I’d liked was less…. misogynist/ laddish but…. that bass and swagger…)

Thanks so much for the update – I’m still giggling from picturing what your house is like at the moment!

So – the challenge is:
– its a song with “forever” in the lyrics
– it may (or may not) be from the 80’s
– it may be a ‘hair band’ (though not necessarily)
– it sounds ‘flat’ or ‘sharp’.

Well – that’ll be easy to identify!

Obviously, coming hot on the heels of two Moody Blues posts, I think we can discount Forever Autumn, sung by Justin Hayward (lead singer of said band).
Also I think we can discount Who Wants to Live Forever by Queen as its unlikely anyone would forget who is singing that one!

Now, in my latest foray into the CD racks at Oxfam, I picked up a ‘Best of..’ of a band I know a couple of hits of, but I know little else they did.
And on it is this track – bit of a long shot, but could it be…?

So, I was actually going to pop in to say “Hi” to post this ridiculous tune.
When I was younger I never really got into the heavy Rock geetar bands, but when I was last in Oxfam on my semi-regular rifle through their CDs I got one of those ’30 greatest guitar songs EVER‘ albums.

Full of much that I smirkingly remembered and some I gladly didn’t, this popped up.

Its ridiculous.
The muddy mixing or production sounds like they threw everything at it to make it moremoremore!
And while shaking my head in a ‘no no no’ I realise I love it!

That Baccarat song was recently used in a Cadbury’s chocolate ad that I thought worked well (the campaign seems a rather simplistic ‘bit of fun’ following on from the Phil Collins one, but probably works in terms of what its aiming for).
I like it anyway!

I don’t really have a ‘song’ for Resolution.
John Coltrane doesn’t really seem appropriate (but enjoy it anyway!)

Obviously Sheffield stalwarts The Human League did this, but its for the wrong Doctor (lets look forward and all that!)

Hi everyone – hope you’re enjoying the New Year!
I haven’t much to add to everyone’s thoughts on Resolution – except to add to the view that one Dalek is always better (ie scarier) than hordes of them.

Chibnall seems to be stronger in the ‘intimate-relationship dialogue rather than speech-ifying and though I was never a fan of the bombastic stuff we’ve had before, I still think things like:

Doctor – “Come on you lot – places to go”
Yaz – “When you say places to go, where were you thinking?”
Doctor – “I was thinking …. everywhere”

is all a bit… flat.
Its a box/ show that takes you through Time and Space and that just seemed … well a bit flat.
But I’m not a writer, I couldn’t write better (I only had the one word – “flat”) and I’m still looking forward to the next series.
(I’m actually looking forward to the insights of people here to the show as much as to the show itself, as well as following how you all are!).

As relationships are Chibnall’s strength I’m in two minds as to whether a Yaz / Ryan relationship is a good idea, but I would love to see more of Yaz and some groundwork has been done I guess (indeed in Resolution its she that answers Aaron’s question about how Ryan is looked after in this motley group).

Hey all – Happy New Year’s Eve to everyone!

I’ve been trying to get into the christmassy vibe and now the New Year’s vibe but… just a weird one this year.
Nothing major, I’m perfectly fine as thankfully are my loved ones, just not in an especially ‘festive’ spirit though I am perfectly content.

So, I’ve spent too long trying to find a tune and have ended up with these (too long to choose these if I’m honest!!)

If you’l indulge me [ie you can skip this and listen to the choon] over the last few years there seems to have been an increasing groundswell of ‘liberal’ opinion in terms of “hold on, yes people have the right to hold opinions but we really can’t keep letting people say stuff without directly questioning why they feel the way they hold that opinion” [as opposed to saying ‘here are the facts’ – we’re dealing with emotionally held opinions, not rationally held ones that seems to have dawned on some people].

hm, tonight’s not the night for all that, but here’s something thinking about the year ahead.

oh – and here’s something fun about ‘how can I feel the happiest?’ sung as a corollary at a time of deprivation so everything’s about stuff (and young women – hm).

Haven’t been on the forum for a few days (or have I????*)

I’m travelling over the next few days (visiting a friend which is nice).
So a quick post of the most obvious song I could think of!

I could’ve sworn I’d posted this clip before and if so sorry – its just the way I usually check suggests I didn’t (maybe I meant to…).
Tracy Macleod (the presenter) mentions his father’s singing which obviously happened every time for him judging by his reaction at the beginning – probably like any actor of the Doctor! Also how she’s so… unaffected afterwards always made me laugh (I know it would be hours later but still).

Amazing that his voice can do this live

@pedant and @cathannabel (and @ everyone else),

that body of work stands and will stand, with some of the finest 3 minute pop songs ever crafted. And some of the most memorable lyrics. Pete Shelley, RIP.

Cath you’ve said better than I why the Buzzcocks were so good and the sadness of hearing about Pete Shelley.

As a kid at the time I’d have caught them on Top Of The Pops, but it was years before I got a ‘Best of’ when I actually listened to them. I always thought their songs were so spare/ pared back but on re-listening now, I realise that actually there’s a lot going on.
The best of their’s are so brilliantly crafted and played.

@thane16 – you mentioned you’d not heard A Man of Constant Sorrows – I mainly know the Dylan version (though I’ll admit I don’t really listen to his early stuff much)

Anyway, here’s another song for It Takes You Away.
Actually I have two.

One is Orpheus by David Sylvian. I think versions of that myth are similar in some ways to the other fairytales where you can’t ‘cheat’ Time or Death or Love.

The other song is one that I think probably suits if thought from the father’s perspective.
I know I don’t usually hear the lyrics(!) but in this one, it did seem to chime with how I could imagine the father in his grief being enticed by the Solitract through the mirror.
He gets so lonely and just gets tempted back again and again, leaving Hanne for longer and longer…

aww @arbutus – I’m gonna listen to the Herbie Hancock in my morning (they’re great great tunes and I’ve not heard the live versions).

But they’ll make me want to get up and for me as I type its nighttime.

So – here is a(nother) song for It Takes You Away.
@bluesqueakpip has explained better than I how much of a fairytale this episode is (and for another TV example of fairies taking people away and making them lose their minds, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a good example – different to the book but good in its own way).

Anyway – I have two songs in mind but I’ll do one tonight and the other tomorrow.

The linkages to the episode are I guess that its by a band called Mum (they’re Icelandic which is kinda Scandiwegian I guess) and the track title.
For me its one of best songs on their album Now We Are No One

Its called the Land Between Solar Systems

 

This is music to go to wake up to. Or maybe go to bed to.
Nothing much happens. Although the sound has incredible details, the tune itself doesn’t – it just shuffles along.
Like waking up.
Or going to sleep.
Or getting lost in a fairytale perhaps…

@pedant – Mirror in the Bathroom – fairy nuff ! Tight as a gnat’s …. hm maybe I shouldn’t do rhyming.
The other ‘mirror’ songs in my collection are all unsuitable and so I’ll link to something by Arctic Monkeys (from the album referenced by the t-shirt).
Snap out of it – perhaps quite appropriate.

But I’ll also link a song which is me trying to follow your direction of being a bit more oblique, but also prompted to think a bit about themes etc.

I think I’ve linked to this album before but if I haven’t then all I can say is is one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard.

Its called Longing and is perhaps only a theme of this story but still.
Its maybe not the most instantly accessible pieces on the album (it builds up – I suspect like ragas do but I know nothing about them apart from hearing a few, so I’d love someone with knowledge of Indian music to enlighten me on that) but… longing for completion/ longing for resolution, longing…

That. Was. Excellent.

Honestly, I was welling up/in tears at the end and thought that all the actors* were brilliant.

Just thought the whole thing worked well.
In this one I’m not especially caring if it feels like “is this the Doctor?” and instead just enjoying feeling “that was a great story”.

No doubt some music** will come but really just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this one.

@thane16 – for a bit of context (if you’re interested), here’s a bbc documentary that tries to show where the electronic sound of Heaven 17 and Human League (and many others!) came from.

I can actually remember the Tomorrow’s World that featured Kraftwerk which is featured here, though I’d only be around 4.
As its one of the few things I can remember from that long ago, it obviously made a big impression!
