    @bluesqueakpip

    The worst thing about this damnable campaign is the way both sides have started spitting sheer hatred at the other side.

    This is a claim I keep seeing.

    Can you show me some examples of the Remain camp “spitting hatred” (other than the internecine Tory war, which only incidentally to do with the EU and every thing to do with Gove and BoJo’s ambition)?

    My hope (and suspicion) is that a goodly number of Remainers have been cowed into silence by the sheer bile and hatred exhibited by Leave (and I do not excuse the left wing leavers (leavists?) in any way here), and that the ballot box will be where they speak.

    @pedant

    We never agree, do we? But you know what made me angry in your post #52842?

    There is no group as adept as the English working classes at finding someone else to blame for their indolence,

    And there is no group as adept as the English middle and upper classes at displaying contempt towards the working class. It’s particularly ironic that you then go on to ask (with apparent seriousness) why I think that the Remain camp are showing bile and hatred towards the Leave (as well as vice versa).

    Okay, so your little example of superior contempt isn’t exactly ‘bile and hatred’. But go on to the Graun website. Take a look at the comments. Take a real look.

    You will see people who are supposed to be socialist, supposed to be socially aware, supposed to be liberal and supposed to be sophisticated calling half the country xenophobic, racist, stupid, lazy and fascist. But that’s okay, because they’re talking about the older, or poorer, or less educated half of the country – and really, what can you expect from ‘those people’?

    Sometimes they’ll say that: then on another post they’ll talk about the UK’s ‘cultural compatibility’ with Europe. As opposed to our ‘non-compatibility’ with other (darker skinned) countries. Nothing to do with skin colour, of course, purely ‘cultural’. Or they’ll talk about racist attitudes and then – sometimes in the same post – they’ll explain that migrants are better workers and Brits are ‘lazy’ and ‘don’t want to work’. And they won’t see the disconnect; that they are complaining about the other side’s racism while displaying the most blatant classism.

    Bile, hatred and contempt. From both sides.

    I’m really glad this damn campaign is over. 🙁

    @at all

    Does anyone have a niiice recording of Tubular Bells that isn’t live? I chucked mine!  The only half decent version is in The Exorcist. Should have a nice pace -but the live versions don’t yank the pace enough -gets bogged down.

    Okay, I kept finding myself singing this all day yesterday, so:

    Music to Brexit by. Anyone else got some good ‘end of the world’ music?

    @arbutus – bass sax = endlessgood

    ;¬)

    So – choons to console? Or just choons to say “isearchedmyituneswiththeword”end”,”europe”etc ?

    Like you care?

    So here is some stuff (can you tell I’m still bruised?)

    A song to say the affair is over?

    and something uplifting that I found when looking for “end” songs
    A piece of music I’ve loved since I first heard it years ago.

    #52930
    Whisht @whisht

    @puroandson – as for Tubular Bells, I’d imagine that it was strictly enforced “rights management” that means there’s no versions of the album on youtube or similar.

    Which is dumb. That was the reason we couldn’t link to many Prince tracks which meant that many people couldn’t hear how great he was and think “I’ll pick up one of his albums”.

    hey ho – thank goodness pedant knows dropbox.

    When the music industry will figure out how to recompense artists properly and understand the digital medium is another matter.

    So – England crash out of Europe (again).

    haven’t had chance to realy think what’s a good track to do here, so here’s one with the lovely lines:

    “Don’t grease my palm with your filthy cash
    Multinationals spreading like a rash
    I might stick around or I might be a fad
    But I won’t sell my songs for no TV ad “

    @puroandson      I see you’ve gone all cerebral over at the pub (all very interesting, btw). As we are celebrating Canada Day today, I’ve got the music playing and thought I’d share. Just so you all don’t think that our only musical exports are named Justin, Celine, and Nickelback.  🙂

    Today I have listened to the wonderful and idiosyncratic Glenn Gould, and a more contemporary take on Bach from Angela Hewitt. Also the fabulous Marc Andre Hamelin (one of my household gods; coincidentally, I was present at this performance!), and the iconic Oscar Peterson.

    Not wanting you to think that we only play piano here.  🙂  There’s loads of other stuff, of course, I have shared it here before, but lately I’ve been listening a lot to these guys.

    #53044
    Anonymous @

    @arbutus that is marvellous: just what I needed to hear. Thank you very much.

    I have most of Gould’s output -he is closet to my version of heaven. His preludes and fugues are extraordinary as are Bach’s variations.

    The knowledge of counterpoint and fugal harmonics that Gould has is just outstanding -a gift to most but very studied with Gould, I find: and I admire that. It means we can all aspire to (well; try very hard) such brilliance as Wordsworth said.

    Oscar Peterson  -yay too.

    Love to you,

    This article isn’t ‘fact’, but I agree with its premise that shamefully Johnson didn’t expect to win the Referendum.
    For Johnson it would be an honourable loss, alignment to an influential base of the party and then… power.

    But when they did win, Johnson facing the pressure, bottled it.
    (a bit like the England team facing Iceland)

    (actually this is UNKLE – Featuring Thom Yorke, not Radiohead as its credited).

    And then…. enter stage right – a figure.

    “Et tu, Gove ?”

    @barnable – cheers, not heard in a long time and actually bothered myself to listen all the way through and raised a smile when it was sorely needed!
    🙂
    @arbutus – thanks for the Great Big Sea – there’s something about a recording made by a band where you think “wish I was listening to them doing this live” 🙂
    but mucho thanks for Oscar Peterson – I haven’t got much/ any of his stuff and now know where I’m lacking in a bit of shellac-ing!
    Gotta make some time for the Gould too.

    Miss @arbutus and Mr @whisht I know you like choons. And this is from my cousin who is doing the singing at a local pub in Canberra? I love my cousin, she’s so cool and her voice is a lot like mum’s but mum would say her niece’s voice is better. She doesn’t get too nervous. I don’t know the songs. They might be covers, I’m not sure.

    Anyway, to all birthdays, everywhere.

    Hi Puro’s Son – well your cousin is certainly talented!

    She has a great voice!
    I don’t recognise all he songs, but the first is a song by James Blunt. But I think I prefer your cousin’s version!

    I didn’t recognise the second one, but the third is a great track by James Taylor, and there’s a great cover by Willie Nelson.

    Thanks for sharing this – your certainly have a cool cousin!

    Now for some birthday tracks for @Puroandson

    Apologies its late, but I wanted to find something special.
    However…. my usual method is to ‘search’ my iTunes using relevant keywords, but “birthday” just brings back the obvious.

    So I just scrolled through and randomly picked out a few things that I thought “ha ha!” when I saw/heard them.
    🙂

    I thought I’d put some calming pieces in as you may still be feeling a little fragile.
    But I also put some more energetic tracks if you were feeling “enough of this crap! I wanna rock out you eejit!”

    so…..

    Something soft:

    Tezeta – Menelik Wesnatchew (this is off that Ethiopiques album I linked to before. For some reason I’m reminded of “Sailing by” which gets played on Radio 4 in UK last thing at night when the Shipping Forecast is read out).

    Want something funkier?
    This is Gedawo by Ayalew Mesfin & Black Lion Band (its like someone heard Hendrix and James Brown, but just sang their own type of music over it)

    But just for a laugh, I thought I’d also link to this. I wasn’t into Tangerine Dream but picked this up from a charity shop – glad I did!

    Happy birthday (to everyone who’s birthday it is this year)
    🙂

    @whisht

    Hi there! Mum is resting (she wrote a post just before though) and wanted me to  extend my thanks to the music and  you. She loved it and I found it awesome. I’ve never heard music like this before? I know Tangerine Dream from  a  kid in my soccer team who is nearly 17 and loves jamming with his mates in the garage. He had this on his iPod but the ethiopian music was really interesting. Both of them got me dancing wildly. Its so different from the music my mates listen to? I think they like tons of rap and dreamy female voices which are either deep or somewhere in between. Mum said they don’t use their “head voices” and I have no idea what that means. I’m always up for new stuff but they’re sort of “well we like whats in fashion” and I have no idea what that means in music either. To me, fashion is bleugh and why would music go in and out of fashion? Makes no sense to me.

    Thank you for all those trax. Just what mum needed I reckon.

    Arbutus @arbutus

    @puroandson         I’m sorry, the ball has been dropped and I dropped it! Happy belated birthday, Puro! Some music for you, and the stories that go with it.

    My husband played sackbut this morning at the Anglican cathedral downtown. He and his little gang of sackbutters accompanied the cathedral choir in a half-dozen compositions of 17th-century composer Johann Rudolf Ahle. It was really lovely. I couldn’t find any of the actual pieces that they did, but here is another one, very similar. Lovely stuff.

    A couple of weeks ago, Arbutus Junior and I hung out at the Vancouver Folk Festival, and we heard this fabulous band. Junior was particularly impressed by both the music and the message.

    And finally, for you, dear Puro (and anyone else who enjoys a good pun as much as I do) a joke I saw today.

    #53512
    Arbutus @arbutus

    @puroandson      Also, Son of Puro, I have to second @whisht‘s comments about your cousin. She has a great voice, very rich and soulful. I’ll bet she’s great on the blues/soul repertoire. And kudos to her on that gig. Way, way back in the day when I aspired to a career of that sort, I played a few times in those kind of pub-places where you were just supposed to go ahead, and it felt like no one was really paying attention. I found it horribly unnerving, frankly I would have been less nervous in Carnegie Hall! I admire your cousin’s guts.  🙂  Thanks for sharing that link.

    @arbutus

    no ball was dropped! Not at all. Thank you for your wishes and for the Rudolf Ahle -he loved his quarter tone trills didn’t he? And SO difficult to get right with the basso continuo inheriting the ‘lack of temper’, as it were. The sickbutt (I know, shameful but that was me in university) is very hard to play -and clean. I used to moan about the oboe (which I was terrible at) but the larger more conical instruments were tough to master. As for staying in tune: a hot day, a humid day, a cold day, a flu day…if it ever came together it was a miracle!

    Junior Arbutus also has taste….nice. Very good indeed and as for the joke? Very hilarious. I’m reminded of that age of Aquarius and where it’s all going….

    It’s certainly an age -whichever one I’m not sure

    Also I shall pass on that compliment. She’ll love it. I think she’s very good too and it’s so darn hard. Some professional singers make it seem so effortless and yet it never is. It’s good to remember that sometimes.

    ok, this has nothing to do with anything.

    no one died (except of course in the referenced material loads of people/perps died) and this is merely a homage to classic soundtracks and the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic.

    Not sure if this will work, but I’m trying to make the image a link…

    Arbutus @arbutus

    @whisht     Oh, I didn’t know.   🙁   Thanks for those tracks.

    I’ve listened to your last few without giving back. Bad, bad Arbutus. Here’s one to make up for it. I’ve been listening to Music From Big Pink pretty much non-stop for the last 48 hours (not sure why, it has just engaged me this week!).

    No one has died (not recently at least).

    For me, this is the best ever version of this Dylan song. I’m not sure whether it’s the amazing way the three very different voices come together, or the combination of atmospheric electric guitar and wacky keyboard work, or just the way the voices and instruments all sort of work to sound like an amazing orchestra. I just think it’s perfection.

    #53891
    Whisht @whisht

    So, I’ve been meaning to come on and post some music to do with Who (would make a change!!) but each time I hear something and think “ooh that would be good” I realise that a bunch of swearing etc is in the lyrics! *

    I usually just search my iTunes using a word (eg “wait” “waiting”) and then listen to what comes up. I then listen to lyrics and think “ooh maybe not!”
    Hence why I’ve not been posting regularly.

    Anyway, enough waffle – here’s something that came up on the “waiting” search that I thought “yeah, its good, no swearing, and not about waiting for a loved one, drug dealer etc”
    And I know it has eff all to do with Who (except for our waiting), but….. otherwise I’d post nothing.
    (maybe that would be better, but you don’t have to click!)

    * people here will realise I’m not primarily a lyrics (or script) person – I mainly go with ‘feel’.

    @arbutus

    Here is a bit of context to @whisht‘s wonderful post.

    The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah band was created by a group of art school students in the 60s, with the premise of satirizing (and simultaneously celebrating) pop music. The principal involved was Vivian Stanshall, an amazing artist and self made eccentric, who produced a wonderful body of work in the style of Edward Lear, Lewis Carroll and Spike Milligan, before a tragic early death. Here is a clip about him

    The name of the band was originally the Bonzo Dog/Dada band, but they became tired of explaining what Dada meant.

    Clearly, I have a real soft spot for what they represented

    Thanks @puroandson for the nudge!  I’m back…  had a few problems logging in but some helpful soul on the Website comments forum put me right.

    Music – seeing the pic of Scott Walker reminded me that he did the soundtrack to a film I saw recently – Childhood of a Leader

    Doesn’t feature his voice but I really really liked the soundtrack – the film was very good, missed being truly outstanding by a bit of a margin, but certainly interesting and powerful with music to match.

    Superpowers – I have none (like Puro I cannot roll my ‘r’s – praps why I chose to study French rather than Spanish or Italian, I can’t curl my tongue or burp on cue) but if asked why I chose my husband, the answer is that he could raise his eyebrows independently of one another, AND could play a bunch of Bowie songs on guitar.
