Thanks for the tip regarding the DVD. I didn’t realise that anything other than stills survived of the original Quatermass Experiment, because the only method of recording in 1953 was by filming either the live action or the image on the TV screen, and the resulting picture quality was sometimes more than a bit fuzzy. The s…[Read more]

Quatermass and the Pit: I’ve never seen the film, so I can’t comment on that, but I remember the live TV production featuring Andre Morell as Quatermass and Cec Linder as Roney very well indeed – December 1958/January 1959, so I would have been 16 and my brothers 11 and 13. We can still quote bits of the dia…[Read more]

If what I have read is correct, I doubt we need spend time fretting about this Doctor’s costume. It will be like the British weather; if we don’t care much for what he is wearing this week, just wait a while and it will change.
On another tack, is the name Flood significant? It has reminded me that when I was aged around 11-12, way…[Read more]

You are, of course correct; Susan is unlikely. But then it’s easy to lose count of how many times London has been devastated or been almost destroyed and recovered in the past/present/future of the whoniverse 😕

Mrs Flood. Definitely not the Rani, it’s *never* the Rani 😉 It’s difficult to see how she could be River either; we’ve seen both her death and what she said was her last meeting with the Doctor before her death, when he took her to the Singing Towers. She survives digitally, saved in the Library computer, from which she can ev…[Read more]

The Doctor dances, with not a hint of the Drunken Giraffe, he even sings, and – pace @Kharis – this is the Doctor now, enjoying life, freed by the bi-generation from the last traces of PTSD and angst and ‘absolutely’ himself, as he said in his first moments. So I agree entirely with the seemingly almost universal opinion that Gatwa owns the ch…[Read more]

who is Anita Dobson playing?
The name of the character, Mrs Flood, gives no clue as far as I’m aware, but perhaps a former – hitherto unrecorded? – companion of the Doctor on his travels. Or, given the number of times the Doctor has saved London from alien threats, maybe just someone who hasn’t been afflicted by the c…[Read more]

Yes, The Carol of the Bells, which we heard in the introduction when baby Ruby is left at the church and again at the other end of the time loop when the Doctor returns her to the church porch – presumably the church choir singing. I wonder whether the choice here was deliberate, given that it is a Ukrainian song in origin – although I…[Read more]

Just discovered that I forgot to buy an essential ingredient for the stuffing 😬, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t time to stop by and wish everyone here on the forum a peaceful and joyous Christmas and a hopeful New Year.

cauliflower cheese. It’s a marvellous dish!
Can’t argue with that, it made me the Mudlark I am; likewise the Macra(ni) Cheese, regarding which the only terrors were my best friend and me when it appeared on the school dinner menu 😜
Looking forward, maybe the Toymaker’s phantasmagorical legions to come will include that well known Gr…[Read more]

There’s no way no14 is going to stay put when the Earth is once again under threat (checks fobwatch) I think this is the BBC not having the courage of its convictions when casting a black lead
Well, if RTD is to be believed, that isn’t the way they are thinking at the moment ht…[Read more]

Judging by the video, an enormous amount of work must have gone into the set and the FX, whether CGI or prosthetics or a mixture of these. I ended up watching it frame by frame, and the amount and fineness of the detail, particularly in the decaying woodwork of the ship, is staggering. After the episode airs I can foresee myself re-watching the…[Read more]

There certainly has been a flood of advance material – publicity to attract new viewers or to encourage viewers who abandoned the show to return, no doubt.
Maybe I’m being over cautious; it’s just that I seem to recall that trailers and clips released in advance, and all discussion thereof, used to be quarantined in the…[Read more]

Interesting but, um, for the sake of the spoiler averse perhaps it might have been more appropriately posted in BBC Approved Spoilers. I have a theory about the plot of the Christmas special based on this and other scraps of information let fall in the advance publicity but will post it there, just in…[Read more]

They were all different, but they were all Who.
Indeed they were and continue to be.
As already indicated, I rate this episode pretty highly and I’m not sure what my further musings are worth, but here goes anyway.
The Giggle had a nice mix of who-ish ingredients. There was plenty of action with an occasional joke, and the…[Read more]

Binary, doppelgangers, bi-generation – I’m sensing a theme here
Exactly the same thought had occurred to me 🙂
Your mention of The Magic Shop sent me this morning to my overstuffed bookshelves and to a hefty tome – 1148 pages – containing the collected short stories of H G Wells. It belonged to my father originally, and for once I mana…[Read more]

Thanks . Lord Voldemort’s Book of Resurrection Spells it is, then – that is, if I can find it on my double-stacked book shelves. 😉
