Something to rekindle memories of Australia in the 1980s.

Ah, the days of yore, back when the left-wing Prime Minister was a champion beer drinker. These days, the Prime Minister is a right-wing evangelical.
So much for progress.

I never know what to say at a time like this.
My husband (who didn’t share my love of the Doctor, but watched them anyway) died after five months of diagnosis.
That was bad enough, but suddenly, for no reason? I really feel for you my dear.
Sorry I cannot think of any quote that would be appropriate except possibly:
“Everything…[Read more]

@thane16 and @mudlark These hospital experiences you describe are jaw-dropping. I never imagined that, in this “modern” day and age, such things could happen. Like @dentarthurdent, I am very fortunate in that regard. I’ve had very few hospital stays, and now I appreciate the kindness and care I received all the more!

@thane16 dentarthurdent and @janetteb Thanks for the warm thoughts, the lad looks better every day and will soon be trying to leave us. Next weekend is our Thanksgiving holiday so I am keeping him here until then. Some turkey and pumpkin pie should top him up nicely.
@nerys I have the two youngest on Team Tardis with me so we out numbe…[Read more]

Greetings Puro. Forgive me if I find your account of that episode funny, in a blackish sort of way. That hospital sounds to have been gruesome; one a par with the one in which I was born, six years before the inception of the NHS.
My poor mother was not to know. She was new to the area and, of the two hospitals in Halifax (Yorkshire,…[Read more]

@Nerys Best wishes for a safe journey. Sorry to hear about your Dad.
@thane16 Also sorry ot hear about your Mum.
I have not yet watched Foundation but am looking forward to doing so when I can. It sounds promising.
@winston yes indeed. I hope that your son is fully recovered now. Our children never really grow up to us at least. Our eldest is…[Read more]

@thane16 and @nerys It totally sucks to come to that time in your life when the people you looked up to and cling to, leave you. Losing my Mom and Dad left me feeling lost and adrift for a long time until I remembered that I was my grown children’s rock and I had to be strong for them. The role of child had ended for me and being mother and…[Read more]

@thane16 I would love to watch “Foundation”, only to discover (via Mrs Blenkinsop’s internet skills) that we need a post-2018 LG TV to be compatible. (Our pre-2018 Australian LG TV does not cut it.)
As a response to this indignity, “pissed off” does not really capture my feelings adequately.
I know I am now a Canadian, but it would have been…[Read more]

@thane16 I understand what you’re saying about always thinking, “I could’ve done more.” Been there, done that. Because my father had managed his health conditions (low kidney function being the primary one) so well, for so long, I adopted a pattern of thinking he was always going to bounce back … because he always had. Of course, my rational…[Read more]

@thane16 Thank you for sharing your thoughts on your mother, and your pain over missing that last visit. Because, how could you know? How could any of us know what was coming? I remember you writing about her after she had died, but these reflections bring it home even more.
I had a similar experience with my father, though mine was more drawn…[Read more]

@nerys In case I missed saying it before, good luck and best wishes for your trip. I hope the long drive is free of any oopses. They make for great telling later but you don’t need them right now. And I hope your visit with your family goes well.

@thane16 I am sorry about the loss of your mother. I wish I had words that would make you feel better but only time will do that. We always hope there will be another time and sometimes that doesn’t happen and it is hard to live with but time will replace those feelings with warmer, nicer memories.

@thane16 The Good Place comes highly recommended. Thanks for adding your praise of it! I will have to look it up once we finish Unforgotten.

Allo, allo was one of my favourite shows. Most of the time it brought tears to my eyes. Remember when Edith used to sing, everyone put cheese in their ears?
The Australians are good at drama, not so good at comedy, it always seems to be such an effort.
Americans, depending on your sense of humour, can be good at…[Read more]

@thane16 syzygy –
Yes you did (suggest a Western inclination). I’m sure that’s right.
But I was thinking of a narrower definition – within ‘Western’ there are many subdivisions, I think. British, French, American etc. But – to be honest – I don’t think I could adequately define the characteristics I’m talking about. I run the risk of…[Read more]

@thane16 syzygy Yes, undoubtedly British TV has its share of cringeworthy programmes. Sturgeon’s Law applies – 95% of anything is rubbish.
I believe ‘New England’ is, I think, considered to be more restrained than the rest of US in general. Just how true that is, I wouldn’t presume to judge.
So, do you think there’s anything in the the…[Read more]

@thane16 I totally agree that every AG Doctor has been great, all in very different ways and all perfect at the time. Everyone here knows that my fave Doctor is always the one I’m watching at the time but ChrisDoc is my Doctor. He was the first one I watched and Eccleston’s acting sucked me into the Whovian universe and I have been there ever since.
