I don’t know how many of you are familiar with Brian De Plama’s cult classic Phantom of the Paradise. It’s basically a modern day update of Phantom of the Opera and Faust. The music was done by the great Paul Williams, who was nominated for an Oscar for it. This is my personal favorite track

@badwulf That stones video has been driving me mad for years. The version of the song they play isn’t the one from the album. They’re clearly miming, so it’s not a live version. Was it the single release? Is it even available to buy? I hope so because it’s better than the lousy album version.

Yeah, it’s pretty well known that Lloyd Webber ripped off Pink Floyd for Phantom. Still a great song.

As for Spiderman films, 2 is easily the best comic book film ever made for me, but if you found the first one boring you probably wouldn’t like this one that much either. 3 wasn’t great, but nowhere near as bad as people say it is. I have no idea why so many people rate the reboot films. I feel they are overlong and boring. Glad you enjoyed Guardians though.

@badwulf Like I said I don’t think it’s as bad as people make it out to be. In fact, I’m actually quite found of it since it was the first film I ever watched at the cinema.
There are a lot of things I like about it such as the music, Darth Maul and the production design.
Now Attack of the Clones, that’s an awful film.

@pedant You know what, you’ve actually changed my opinion about Osgood’s death. I think my earlier reaction was just shock, since Moffat never actually kills off anyone, and when he does he usually just brings them back to life later, thus robbing their death of any meaning. At least in the classic series characters stayed dead.

I found it quite underwhelming. It wasn’t great but it wasn’t bad either, it was just okay. I liked the idea of using the dead to create Cybermen and it was fun to see the UNIT team back (although I didn’t see the need in killing off Osgood). On the other hand I just didn’t like The Master in this. The actress’s performance was very annoying to me. I know some of the older Master’s were camp but I felt that she really went too far. Last week I felt that the character being female now was nothing more than a gimmick, and my opinion hasn’t changed. I liked how her motivation was just to get the Doctors approval. This has been an aspect of The Master’s character that hasn’t really been seen since Delgado’s incarnation, which is a shame since it makes their relationship more interesting and I’m glad it has been included here.
I have to admit, being a fan of The Thick of It I’m a bit disappointed that Chris Addison didn’t get any screen time with Capaldi.
It’s certainly watchable, and nowhere near the worst series finale (I’m looking at you Last of the Time Lords)
I’d give it a 5/10

@phaseshift There’s no way you could get me in a dress, even for charity. I had to cross-dress for charity once, but even after much persuasion I only went as far as wearing a blouse and a hair band (even then I still acted like a miserable git about it). I guess I’m just a bit of a stick in the mud like that.
Or maybe I just don’t like showing off my hairy legs, I hate wearing shorts for the same reason.

I haven’t fully formed my opinion yet, I will wait till part 2, but so far it’s good. The only thing I didn’t really like was the twist, which I already knew so it didn’t bother me as much as it could have. I think that can get past The Master turning out to be a woman, although it still would probably bother me a bit. The kiss however, is something I don’t think I will ever get over. Before you say anything, it’s not because The Doctor kissed somebody who used to be a man. To me it just doesn’t seem like something any of the other incarnations of The Master would ever do.

To me it just came off as a bit of a parody rather than a proper episode. Obviously, there’s comedy in the show, but I think they just went a little bit overboard on this one. For example, the stuff with the kids felt like something out of a bad Cbbc sitcom.
Also the science didn’t seem to make any sense whatsoever. Obviously it’s science fiction so it doesn’t have to be 100% realistic, but there wasn’t any sort of explanation as to how it all worked. Even if the explanation was rubbish, at least they would have explained it.
I also felt that the ending was also an anti-climax since the problem seemed to just resolve itself and The Doctor didn’t seem to do all that much.
One positive thing is that Clara and Danny’s relationship stuff took a backseat to the plot. I’ve never found them or their relationship to be particularly interesting, so I’m glad it wasn’t as prominent as it was in previous episodes.

I give it a 3 out of 10. It’s a shame since I quite liked the last two episodes.

@scaryb Here’s a story about The Clash. I was at College (I study media there) one day, and we were filming a couple of bands from the music course. Anyway, one of the bands preformed several songs by the Clash. When it was over I was talking to a couple of my fellow students and pointed this out to them. One of them then said “you look like somebody who listens to the Clash”.
Now, looking at my avatar, do I look like somebody who listens to 1970’s punk music? I mean I do, but that’s still a pretty odd statement to make.

Overall I liked it, but I do have some reservations. The ending was a bit of an anti-climax, and Clara’s wanting to leave then not wanting to leave was rushed and not very well handled. In fact I don’t know why they didn’t just have The Doctor on his own, and then have Clara return in the next episode. I know time has passed for the characters, but bit just seemed jarring that they are on fairly good terms considering the last time we saw them together she was going off at him. I don’t like the fact that she lied to Danny at the end.
Also, am I the only one who felt that the story didn’t need to be in space? Why couldn’t it have just taken place on the actual Orient Express.
