I have been watching the classic 1970’s TV series The Persuaders over the past week. It’s about an English Lord (Roger Moore) and an American business man (Tony Curtis) being tricked by a retired judge into becoming crime fighters. Our inept heroes find themselves stumbling into diffrent situations each episode and having to right wrongs.
This was one of many action series made by Lew Grade’s ITC Productions, and out of all the ones I have seen it is probably my favourite. This is entirely down to the excellent chemistry between the two leads. In fact, I dont think I’ve seen a greater onscreen paring of two actors in anything. They have a friendly rivalry going on between them, due to their different backgrounds, and they frequently mock each other and bicker, but you can tell that deep down they care greatly for each other.
The episodes themselves are nothing special, they are the standard plots you see in other ITC series’ such as The Saint, but I don’t think anyone watches these type of programs for great storytelling (except The Prisoner of course). They are designed to pure escapist entertainment, and The Persuaders succeeds as that 100%. It has a wonderfully tounge and cheek sense of humour and never takes itself too seriously, even when Moore and Curtis are in danger, although there are a number of suspenseful moments in each episode. The fight scenes are fun and exciting while still being funny at the same time.
I know that this is an over used phrase, but they really don’t make them like this anymore.
19 July 2015 at 17:05 #41290I know that some of you don’t think much of Oasis, but I think their first couple of albums have some great songs on them
19 July 2015 at 16:21 #41289@phaseshift love AC/DC and Black Sabbath (not a fan of metal though).
I’m not sure if it’s particually well known, but I quite like this AC/DC track from the film Last Action Hero. The music video itself is fun because they actually got Arnie to appear in it.
16 July 2015 at 08:00 #41231I adore this series and this song
12 July 2015 at 22:13 #41160@blenkinsopthebrave I wonder if the writers of The Simpsons are Doctor Who fans?
12 July 2015 at 22:09 #41159I imagine that the scene where the Cybermen look at their previous encounters must have been interesting for fans since the stories they show clips from wouldn’t have been seen since their original broadcast (I’m not sure if Revenge of the Cybermen had been repeated before this).
10 July 2015 at 19:56 #41104@jimthefish oh absolutely. I’ve criticised the new series a lot (a bit too much if I’m being honest), but the cliffhangers have been consitantly good, even on stories I’m not a big fan of.
9 July 2015 at 06:35 #41074Another of my earliest memories was watching the last episode the Green Death. Quite amusingly, I thought Pertwee was William Hartnell when I first watched it, this being because the only Doctors I was aware of at the time were Hartnell, Troughton and Tom Baker, and Pertwee had white hair so I assumed he was Hartnell.
8 July 2015 at 09:32 #41068While the cliffhanger may be one of the best of the series, I do feel its significance is lost on a lot of younger viewers. Firstly, the front cover ruins the surprise by having a picture of a Cyberman on it. When I first saw the story, I already knew that they would be in it because of this, so my reaction to the cliffhanger was “oh the Cyberman have finally shown up”. It wasn’t until I watched the extra features that I realise that their apperence was kept secret at the time and that they had not been in a story for several years so it would have been a big (Earth)shock for the fans. Secondly, because we live in the age of the Internet, if such a thing happened now, not only would we know about it, but there would also be photographs from the set, leaked scripts ect. It’s almost impossible for any film/TV program to be a total surprise anymore. Of course there are those of us who try to avoid spoilers, but sometimes it’s impossible to avoid them.
5 July 2015 at 19:24 #40975This should be enjoyable, I love Earthshock. That reminds me that I need to get the DVD again.
23 May 2015 at 09:13 #40278@purofilion I have been doing a foundation degree course, which lasts two years, and I just finished the second year. I will hopefully be doing a third year if I pass.
23 May 2015 at 06:27 #40275I just finished College this week. This seems appropriate.
16 May 2015 at 18:53 #40132@phaseshift I apologise if I came off like I was just having a quick snipe at the new series. I was trying to say that one of the reasons I like this story is that their is no assistant, which gives it a unique feel compared to other stories, especially more recent ones which seem to focus on Clara more than the Doctor, not that it’s always a bad thing. Moffat himself even said that Clara thinks the show is about her himself, and I thought it was a funny line so I referenced it. I suppose I didn’t articulate myself very well, I’m not good at articulating things, and it came off as a bit nasty towards the newer series. I didn’t mean to criticise, I was just stating my opinion in a slightly jokey way.
I wasn’t trying to imply that this era is better either, each one is different, and each one has its good and bad points.
Also, sorry if my posts come off as “sound bite criticisms” as you call them, when it comes to writing about things I like or dislike, I can write a lot about them, but I’m always worried that I’ll ramble on incoherently and bore people so I try to limit myself.
14 May 2015 at 06:44 #40115@jimthefish At least we agree that the actually costume and make up design is excellent.
13 May 2015 at 22:55 #40114@jimthefish I agree that Peter Pratt’s portrayal barely resembles the other incarnations, but that’s what I like about him. He fully brings out The Masters insanity and, unlike Simm and Gomez, manages to make it actually scary and not let it turn the character into a pantomime villain. But to each his own.
13 May 2015 at 16:41 #40112Does anyone like the Master in this story besides me?
11 May 2015 at 07:05 #40070I love this story. Not only does it have my favourite Master and a wonderfully gothic atmosphere, but it’s also a fairly intelligent political thriller. It’s quite refreshing to watch a story that focuses entirely on the Doctor amidst the modern stuff that features companions who seem to think the show is about them. The only real flaw is that the Matrix sequences go on for too long.
9/10
22 April 2015 at 19:13 #39671This is my favourite story of all time. To me it’s one of only 3 stories that I rate 10/10 and nothing will ever top it.
21 April 2015 at 07:46 #39662Brian Wilson is a genius
19 April 2015 at 13:03 #39631Found this solo track from the great Pete Townshend while messing about on YouTube. It’s pretty catchy.
27 March 2015 at 20:04 #39262@craig That does sound very similar, although I was under the impression that David Bowie came up with the riff for Lust for Life.
27 March 2015 at 19:03 #39260Has anybody noticed that these two song’s have the exact same riff?
27 March 2015 at 06:37 #39249This is the only vaguely Friday related song I could think of (My musical knowlage is probably quite limited compared to some of you guy’s)
25 March 2015 at 18:21 #39206Here’s a bit of Bugsy Malone
11 March 2015 at 09:16 #38695I got Surrender by The Chemical Brothers at Poundland yesterday. After giving it a listen, this is my favourite track. The music video for it is brilliant as well.
28 February 2015 at 17:37 #38380Some good acting, but not a particularly good film.
28 February 2015 at 17:36 #38379I really like this story. It gives Troughton a chance to show his range as an actor. I also enjoy the 60’s spy film vibe it gives off, it sort of reminds me of the early Connery Bond’s. I much preferred it to the found at the same time Web of Fear which I felt started off with two excellent episodes and quickly lost steam.
There’s only two things that stop it from being perfect, episode 3 is painfully dull making it easy to see why the story had a bad reputation when it was the only surviving episode, and the fight between The Doctor and Salamander is too short (although this is probably due to budget constraints)
27 February 2015 at 17:33 #3833827 February 2015 at 14:00 #38337@jimthefish Thanks
27 February 2015 at 06:42 #38332I’ve got a question. I haven’t seen any of Bill Forsyth’s other films, which ones would you recommend I watch?
21 February 2015 at 20:15 #38174A wonderful and very funny film. It’s one of those films you either love or you haven’t seen it.
20 February 2015 at 18:33 #38151I don’t know if any of you remember a little gem called Antz. It came out around the same time as A Bugs Life, but I think it’s actually better. This is for several reasons. Firstly, the main character is voiced by Woody Allen which makes it comedic gold in my eyes. Secondly the story is much darker and adult, having themes of war, individuality and totalitarianism. The third reason is the soundtrack, particularly the music from the opening credits
17 February 2015 at 09:43 #38052Anyone else looking forward to the new 007 film Spectre?
3 February 2015 at 18:42 #37776@craig My favourite track from the film is this one
3 February 2015 at 13:40 #37772Love this track, especially from about 3:30 onwards.
This ones good as well
26 January 2015 at 09:27 #37618@purofilion I’m not surprised. Apparently a lot of people found the puppets creepy looking, not me though.
Anybody here like Weird Al
26 January 2015 at 06:41 #37613I guarantee you will start to hum along with this in about 5 seconds.
19 January 2015 at 07:10 #37420@bluesqueakpip To be fair if I was an actor I would probably agree to do the film for that reason. I’ve never had a problem with actors doing things for the money or whatever, they have to pay the bills too.
Anyway here’s a track from everybodys favourite plagiarists, Led Zeppelin
18 January 2015 at 16:00 #37378And here’s Pierce Brosnan murdering one of the great pop songs of all time.
12 January 2015 at 05:03 #37256I think this is quite a nice, suspenseful little story. Not one of my all time favourites but a decent way to pass the time. I think the writers of the AG series should look at this as an example of how to do character based episodes without having them be about the characters personal lives or even be set on earth.
I’ve seen some give this story a fairly negative response, but I’m not sure why since as I said before, I think it’s pretty decent.11 January 2015 at 17:40 #37247Unfortunately there are probably quite a number of people on the internet who fall for this sort of thing.
10 January 2015 at 15:47 #37204@pedant You don’t come across as patronising, you seem more like you’re just trying to offer some helpful advice.
10 January 2015 at 10:43 #37191@barbaralefty Definately them. They me sent the exact same message as last time.
10 January 2015 at 07:09 #37175@pedant It’s not that I think Buffy is bad, I used to love it when I was 5, I’m just not a fan of the way Joss Whedon always has his characters have something clever or witty to say, which is something modern Who as adopted. I really liked Avengers Assemble and Serenity though, and Toy Story is a masterpiece.
10 January 2015 at 07:00 #37174@havoc Yes I was 11, 9 years ago when series 2 started. 9 years isn’t recent. And so what if was 11, are 11 year olds not allowed to have an opinion. Also just because you think Tennant is the best doesn’t make it a fact.
And ESPECIALLY Not when you quote Revenge Of The Clones or whichever rubbish film Lucas Put Out (pun intended) in your short and entitled life.
Revenge of the Clones?? Now I know you’re just trolling.
3 January 2015 at 10:08 #36875I just found out the woman who inspired the song Disco 2000, Deborah Bone has died. According to the article below, she was awarded an MBE for her work as a mental health worker.
http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/jan/02/deborah-bone-dies-mental-health-pulp-disco-2000-mbe26 December 2014 at 15:03 #36431That was, not as bad as I thought it would be. Still not great but better than most of the other Christmas specials.
24 December 2014 at 19:09 #36350I was watching Trainspotting a while ago and I remembered this cheerful little tune by Pulp that appeared on the soundtrack. Enjoy.
19 December 2014 at 13:27 #36282I’m probably going to end up watching my all time favourite Christmas film, Die Hard, this year. Yippie Ki Yey.
14 December 2014 at 10:15 #36206This isn’t exactly a classic Christmas song, but who doesn’t like Tommy (The album, not the film. I completely understand if you hate the film.)
