@phaseshift I’ve got it really bad but if it’s just a snake dance then I should be fine. I could handle a similar scene in the Bond film Live and Let Die with not much of a problem. The only kind of snake I can’t bear looking at is a Cobra but I doubt they would use one in this situation.

For anybody who’s interested here’s the TV Movie The Birth of The Beatles. It’s never been released on any Home Video format and rarely gets shown on TV. It was the only Beatles biopic made while John Lennon was still alive and all 4 Beatles tried to stop it from being aired. The songs were performed by a Beatles cover band due to legal reasons. It’s got a number of inaccuracies but I think it’s pretty good, and probably the best Beatles biopic, although compared to some of the others that’s not saying a lot.

@phaseshift Normally I would go for Earthshock but I think I’ll go for Kinda, because I’ve never seen it. I’ve not seen most of the stories on that list but I would like to see this one because I’ve heard it’s supposed to be a classic and also because I’m recording the sequel Snakedance on the Horror Channel next week.

BTW I’ve got a terrible fear of snakes, you couldn’t tell me if they use any real ones in either story could you?

Sound of Drums is pretty good, but Last of the Time Lords is one of the worst episodes of all time. It is appalling. The scene where everyone in the whole world says “doctor” at the same time in order to free him is cringe worthy, and am I the only one who finds it odd that an outspoken atheist like RTD2 uses so many Christ metaphors in his stories? John Simm is the worst Master. At least Eric Roberts was entertaining, Simm is just irritating. This was also the episode that spawned the “Doctor and Master are gay” thing. How immature are you to see two male friends who deeply care for each other and think to yourself “those two are totally gay”? I see this sort of thing all over the internet. Go to the IMDB board for any film/TV series, I guarantee there will be a topic titled “is [insert name of character here] gay?” I should point out that I don’t have a problem with a character being gay, I just hate it when people see things that aren’t there.

Sorry I went off topic there I really just wanted to get that out of my system.

@phaseshift I remember reading the Sally Sparrow short story in a Doctor Who annual (would have been around 2005 because it was for the first series). When I saw blink I immediately recalled the story. Do you ever get a sense of childlike glee when somebody makes a reference that only you understand, but it doesn’t matter that nobody else gets it because at least you do. That’s how I felt at that moment.

End of the Line sounds like a good story, will give it a read sometime.

I missed this during the original broadcast so when I first saw it I already knew that Jacobi was the master. It’s still a great cliff-hanger and probably the best of the SOD U LOTT three parter. It’s a shame he only got to play the role in one episode and didn’t get play it properly until the last 10 minutes. I think he could have been up there with Roger Delgado and Peter Pratt as one of the best Masters. Captain Jack’s return makes me wonder why they didn’t have him as a companion longer.
If your wondering what I thought of the episodes in between Gridlock and this, the Dalek two parter was pants, I must be the only person who like Lazarus Experiment, 42 was okay, Human Nature/Family of Blood is the only AG story I have in my top 20 (that’s very high praise indeed), Blink is very good the first time you see it but I don’t think it holds up on repeat viewings and is a little overrated.

The Horror Channel also shows more recent stuff, but most of it is still not very well known.

@phaseshift I remember Twisted Nerve popping up on the Horror Channel either this year or last year. It was part of a cult classics season along with The Man who Fell to Earth, Peeping Tom and Fear in the Night. You’re right about it being a shame that these kind of films aren’t shown on mainstream channels anymore. Even some classic films don’t get shown much anymore. I was surprised to find out that Citizen Kane is on BBC 2 next week, because I don’t think it’s ever been on TV in my lifetime, and I’m almost 20.

@craig I got Julian Glover’s autograph at the Newcastle Film and Comic Con earlier this year. He signed a Quatermass and the Pit postcard that came with a Hammer Horror box set I own. I also got the novelization of Survival signed by Sylvester McCoy Sophie Aldred and a Withnail and I Blu Ray signed by Paul McGann, who is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. No photo’s though, I hate having my picture taken.
If anyone else was there, I was the one who asked McCoy if he can still stuff ferrets down his trousers during the Q and A session.

I also think Mary Tamm was a better Romana than Lalla. I like both of them, but Mary had better chemistry with Tom in my opinion. The Doctor and Romana 2, particularly in this story, just come off as a couple of horny teenagers who can’t keep their hands off each other. They’re both in my top 10 companions though.

To be honest I think this story is a bit overrated. It’s got nice scenery, some great dialogue and Lalla Ward in a school uniform, but that’s it really. It’s still very enjoyable but I wouldn’t put it in my top 20.

@Rint The old 60’s era Cybermen voices are creepy as hell, “you belong to us, you will be like us”. I also found the clockwork men from Girl in the Fireplace quite scary, especially the scene when you first see one. Something about that mask with the smiling face sends a shiver down my spine. Plus any episodes involving body horror like Ark in Space or Seeds of Doom. They effects may look cheap, but when you actually think about what’s happening to the characters it’s horrifying.

@Rint Start with Jon Pertwee’s first story Spearhead from Space and continue on from there. You may not like the post Tom Baker Doctor’s, you may not. They certainly have a mixed reputation.
The black and white stuff is really good but it’s also very slow paced, so it may not be your thing. I would recommend watching them last.

@scaryb I’m sorry I don’t understand what you mean by you’ll trust I’ll be happy. Is it because you think I that I like Jo as a companion better than Rose. If that’s the case then yes, I am happy. I actually think Jo is a very underrated companion. Like you said she trusted the Doctor, but still questioned him on occasion. She even saves him just as much as he saves her, how many companions have done that. They also had a really good father daughter relationship, which I can buy a lot more than the “one true love” nonsense with Rose. Plus she looks really nice in a mini-skirt. Hey I’m not ashamed to admit I find a woman attractive.

I think this is the best Christmas special. Tate and Tennant are a hilarious double act, it’s no surprise she was brought back as a proper companion. The actual plot is a bit naff, just an excuse for the two of them to get into funny situations, which in this case doesn’t bother me.

I don’t like Lance’s rant at the end where he makes several pop culture references that are now incredibly dated. I’ve mentioned how much this irritates me before, so I won’t go into any more detail.
