@whohar Well, if the 12th Doctor had been Whittaker, it would have been interesting to see how well she did with, errm, better direction. 🙂 Though by the nature of it, we wouldn’t then have seen her actual Chibz-directed performance so we would never be able to make comparisons. (But that’s a hypothetical, to my mind Capaldi + Moff = the Best Doc…[Read more]

‘Moff the marked man’… yes I have alluded, heavily. Will try to keep this short.
In respect to romance in Who, Moff couldn’t do anything RTD didn’t really want, so Russ must have been happy with the tone. And he had previously worked with the idea of ‘Rose the perfect companion’ himself. So, forget ‘The Doctor is Gay Man who women like’…[Read more]

It’s a bind.
On the one hand, why does The Corp insist on trying to ‘set the tone’ for the program? Why CAN’T Who be unashamedly kidult? Because it’s a scratching post for antiwoke, pro-bechdel, anti-exploitative, ‘loadarubbish/don’t understand’, don’t frighten the horses & is this where our license fee goes brigades. Most of…[Read more]

@whohar thank you for the update. Potentially positive though you last point absolutely nails the issue. It is essential to preserve the essence of the series. i felt that the bigger budget did not help with that. It make the more recent series feel more “Hollywood”. It was glossier. Dr Who should never be “glossy”. it needs to preserve that…[Read more]

@whohar  This perfectly describes all that I love about the Doctor. I would add brave , reckless and a little crusty around the edges. Also quirky very quirky. You know that this person is not from around here.

@WhoHar   I think Steven Moffat sums up the Doctor really well.  There is something subtly – odd – about the Doctor’s view of life.  Moff could do that supremely well.  Oh, and your addition (humanlike but otherworldly) – yes I agree.
I think Chibs tried to do the same slight oddness on occasion, but it requires a delicate touch and (mayb…[Read more]

‘Macho’… even pre Chib Nuwho had Timelord Invictus, Good Man C*cks It Up Good and Proper, Epic Sulks, Confession Dials and Other Idiocies.
I’ve no quarrel with the ‘tone’ of RTD2, more the execution, which again may be down to the story. But will we ever know? Will a big break demolish the precious continuity?…[Read more]

@ps1l0v3y0u  I think the reason for 15’s regeneration was to use some of the regeneration energy to disturb the universe sufficiently to being into existence Poppy, a virtual kid of which he had no memory and only existed in Conrad’s dream world.  (Or something like that).
@whohar   Jodie Whittaker’s appearance wasn’t cringe, but it did seem a…[Read more]

The ending… it did seem like a bolt on. To the extent that, though there was supposedly a ‘reason’ to regenerate I just know, if I check it out, I’ll think it was nonsense.
It’s a pity because the rest of the series built up quite a head of steam, even if the ratings were in the basement. The worst regeneration story sin…[Read more]

@whohar  Who *was* one of the least macho sci-fi’s, once.  The last few eps, the Doc has been getting increasingly macho, shooting things with his enhanced sonic gun – I mean screwdriver, posing with macho orchestral music blaring – kind of the opposite of what RTD said.  Maybe Disney got at him – the Star Wars influence.
I did find the sudde…[Read more]

Having just read all the comments –
I agree with @ps1l0v3y0u that the middle of the series was stronger than the start/end. But then, as far as endings go, RTD has a habit of throwing everything but the kitchen sink at it. I don’t think that works particularly well with Doctor Who, it tends to distract us with the minutiae of UNIT which…[Read more]

@whohar  Yes.  Call that a double retcon.  I was delighted with the ‘fan’ sequence – the fans telling the Doc they were real and he was the fiction – which is true in reality but falsifies the story; then RTD retcons that to the ‘fans’ being fictional and part of the story.  (And I found the way in which they were willing to sacrifice their e…[Read more]

@whohar, you are always welcome back!
Interestingly, I had two job offers to go and live in Canada in the early 2010’s – both in Montreal. I umm’ed and err’ed about it for some time before heading to Melbourne.

@winston @whohar @blenkinsopthebrave Thank you for your warm Canada Day wishes! My husband decided to work and plans to take the day off later on. So it was a regular day for us. But, given recent events, I am all the more grateful to call Canada home. We celebrated Canada Day quietly, but no less gladly.

@winston, @nerys and all, just awoken from celebrating Canada Day. I was drinking a very nice red wine and wearing my very best white shirt, and therefore “showing the colours”. @whohar, you are always welcome back! As for the importance of Canada to “Doctor Who”, let’s not forget that the show was created by Sydney Newman, who was of, course,…[Read more]

@blenkinsopthebrave ‘Planet of the Incels’ – I like that, though there was only one Incel in evidence and he was running the show.
I agree with your comment on the tone of the episode. The storyline was pretty heavy in places but somehow the deaths didn’t really register with full weight.@ps1l0v3y0u @whohar It’s quite definitely Eiffel Tower, it…[Read more]

@ps1l0v3y0u @whohar Re the Landwasser Viaduct, it is quite famous and very distinctive – a high stone viaduct on a sharp curve into a tunnel in a sheer cliff. I did check Google Images (plenty of pics of it) to confirm that it was the exact same viaduct. I don’t think I can claim ubergeek status on that, just medium geekery 🙂
While I’m at it, I…[Read more]

OK this is all the metaphor/simile and innuendo from the script of Child/Dances/Boom Town. I think it all survived, but I’ll have to check.
