This is official, but here’s where I should’ve posted it…
6 June 2017 at 22:39 #58656@jimthefish – Ta for the wipe!
6 June 2017 at 22:25 #58653Calling @craig or @jimthefish ? Sorry – I dun a whoopsie…..
6 June 2017 at 22:16 #58652I think Nardole was knitting a scarf…
6 June 2017 at 22:16 #58651I agree with @nick ! If a ‘Mod’ could move 2nd vid to approved spoilers or just delete it I’d appreciate it…
6 June 2017 at 21:58 #58648Calling Time Lord Mods?
Sorry – I just noticed that in post 58646 the 2nd video may contain a spoiler. I just assumed that Michelle Gomez was being surreal…..?!
I hope so…
6 June 2017 at 21:45 #58647I’m more awake now! (That wouldn’t be difficult)
I haven’t read the last two pages of posts yet, so apologies if I’m going over old ground…
@nick I’m not sure that any citizens were actually killed during those 3 months (it seemed in ‘Pyramid’ that the Monks could be ‘merciful’ and perhaps only killed to gain consent). Although what are chances of no killings when the TRUTH Police do the Monks’ donkey work with loaded guns? (Well guns can make people comply!)
If the story went that the humans remained affected, they’d probably have behaved better towards each other afterwards (for a time at least) just like they did in ‘Pyramid’ when the threat united them (see hasty World Peace).

I don’t agree with everything said in this link but it’s an interesting look at the philosophy of the ‘Trilogy’ truth in fidelity… (& it makes me appreciate it a bit more as a trilogy, even though it’s slagging it off a bit)
I stand corrected. Pure love did indeed win the day, but only because Bill doesn’t know how much of a bloody misery-guts her mum could sometimes be in reality! (Ha!) (And what an annoying voice she had! Tee-Hee!)
6 June 2017 at 21:01 #58645Mark Gatiss will appear on the One Show on BBC1 tomorrow @7pm…(presumably to talk about next week’s ep)
5 June 2017 at 01:13 #58540Sometimes it’s easier to put trauma behind you. That’s often how we survive.
Also, humans can’t even agree if climate change is real or not. Or if the the Earth is flat.
Why have certainty in the existence of the Loch Ness Monster? (Plus nobody phone-cam filmed it…!)
5 June 2017 at 00:30 #58535I’m not sure that I’m expressing myself properly. What I mean to say is that some sort of a reset is usually in place after a grand Earth invasion, because it helps to stop people being unimpressed when there’s one next week…
What seems to be suggested by this episode is that yes – there is a bit of a mind wipe, but that people choose to ignore the evidence which remains – because it’s easier. So it’s a reset, but a reset by choice.
A suitably grim conclusion…
It would explain why we’ve forgotten all that other stuff. That & fake news & new Pringles flavours…
If I remember rightly, when the Master returned in The End of Time, it was revealed that people hadn’t forgotten the events that happened before the full reset in ‘Last of the Time Lords’. They had nightmares about him (exacerbated by his imminent return).
Another one for the list: Remember when everyone forgot about that day when the entire Earth was coated in trees?!!!
4 June 2017 at 22:59 #58531This looks good…
4 June 2017 at 22:31 #58530Matt Lucas is on twitter, heavily implying that Nardole’s knitting is going to be of great significance…..
4 June 2017 at 21:49 #58529(For the stump scene, see also this, from ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’:)
Ace: But this is Earth, 1963. Well someone would’ve noticed, I’d have heard about it!
The Doctor: Do you remember the Zygon gambit with the Loch Ness monster? Or the Yetis in the underground?
Ace: The what?
The Doctor: Your species has the most amazing capacity for self-deception, matched only by its ingenuity when trying to destroy itself.
4 June 2017 at 20:18 #58527I like your ‘Not 100%’ theory. It would mean that some people remember what happened. The rest would probably just have nightmares about it & know deep down that they’re true…..
4 June 2017 at 19:52 #58524@nick Sorry – I didn’t really catch the ending properly before…
The Doctor said that ‘the Monks have erased themselves’, but they’ve left statue stumps behind… Surely some intelligent people will be able to posit some reasonable theories as to what happened ‘by the holes they left behind’? So was it really a memory wipe, or are people just ignorant?
It’s debatable if this trilogy is actually a trilogy. Might have to invent a new terminology for it , like ‘A Soft Trilogy’. Probably partly why so many people are so pissed off. It doesn’t particularly join up all that well…
Dr Who does resets 9.9 times out of 10, because otherwise it hampers the next show. Better to try to pull off a non-reset at the end of a series maybe…
On another note entirely, I’m surprised nobody’s been calling ‘Deus’… Then we could repeat that old argument…
4 June 2017 at 18:39 #58517@nick Why depict thought police, interment or labour concentration camps if there isnt a dramatic reason for doing so.
I don’t want to gang up on you here… But…..
The depiction was it. The problem of being a 42 minute show. It may have seemed like a setup but it was just shorthand. If it was an hour long show or a movie, we may have seen the scrapping of the statues, the release and rehabilitation of the prisoners, the reinstallation of a human (& perhaps more humane) government…
I can see how it can be perceived as ‘top heavy’ & ‘bottom empty’ though…..
I suppose we just have to imagine those consequences for ourselves…..
Ah -@nerys has just posted much the same…….
4 June 2017 at 17:11 #58508Fresh…
4 June 2017 at 16:22 #58505…A ‘willing prisoner’ – Like Missy?!?

This is just my understanding of things. I could probably do with a rewatch – Too knackered just now though…
4 June 2017 at 16:04 #58504To elaborate on post 58494, I suspect that the Monks presumed that the only way for the Doctor to defeat them would be for him to remove the lynchpin – to ‘Kill Bill’ – and they knew he wouldn’t.

I don’t think it was the power of love that defeated the monks – As has already been explained, I think it’s something to do with the anomaly that Bill’s mum was real, but Bill’s memories of her were made up – because that’s all she could do as a way of ‘having her mum’.
The monk is on the ship because the Doctor is a prisoner on it. Only the Doctor’s seeming betrayal was a set up…
4 June 2017 at 15:10 #58500People (dafties) on twitter are blaming Steven Moffat for this script. He didn’t write it! (He outlined the gist)…
Also, if there are any serious plot holes in any of the stories, the script/story editors should get the blame. Although Moffat does rewrites, scripts are passed on to these editors to eliminate such problems and to tie stories together satisfactorily…
4 June 2017 at 14:20 #58496@toinfinityandbepond Great post! Les Dawson is a bloody legend!
4 June 2017 at 14:07 #58494The other plot hole that came up was this:
Why did the monks imprison the Doctor & not Bill?
I’m not sure I have an acceptable answer for this in my current wabbit state…
Presumably they thought that without the Doctor, Bill would never discover the truth of her being the source. Their simulations & prophetic shower curtains didn’t count on Nardole & the Resistance having – well, resisted…
Sh*tty sims & shower curtains…..!!!
Perhaps they also didn’t count on the Doctor’s revealing chat with Missy…?
Sloppy sims & shower curtains!
4 June 2017 at 13:00 #58486The Next time trailer for next week’s ep…
The proper trailer for next weeks ep…..
4 June 2017 at 12:56 #58485Patrick Ness has confirmed that he won’t be returning to Class, even if there is a series 2…
4 June 2017 at 12:28 #58481Plenty of potential plot holes this week too. Let’s try & address some…(even though I’ve not really slept!)
@serahni On the not using the TARDIS (where was it all episode?), @tardigrade‘s explanations would cover this. Using it as a taxi = breaks the Monks’ trust. Using it to take Bill into Space to break the link, as also explained = Not ideal. The other thing is that the Doctor declared previously that he doesn’t take the TARDIS into battle (though he’s a bit inconsistent about that!)…..

@tardigrade Why does the Doctor refer to Missy as “the other last of the Time Lords”, with the others returned, even if laying low?
A ‘very guid’ point – & one which I can’t really begin to answer – Perhaps he’s killed them all again(!)
Why didn’t they just smash the statues? Same thing as before – Breaking the link is not ideal…A lot of statues to smash – Plan would probably fail before completion, even if you had enough hammers…
Where did they get the Walkmans from? Maybe from the Walkman Museum?(Ha!)
Why was the CGI so bad? Budget, my dears…. Budget…..
Also for your delectation: A revelation about the actress who plays Bill’s Ma: Where have we seen Bill’s mum before? (No spoilery comments @ the time of linking)
And talking of 1984, the TV Peter Cushing version was recently rediscovered & is well worth a watch… 1984
4 June 2017 at 01:40 #58458Posting his might prove to be totally inappropriate if it turns out people have been shot in London tonight…..
I’ll post it now though, while I’m unaware of exactly what’s what…..
4 June 2017 at 01:20 #58456@thane15 I tried to follow what’s going on with the London attacks on twotter…
Had to stop, as it’s choked with bile & hatred…..
3 June 2017 at 23:56 #58448There’s another terroristy attack going on in London. Not good…..
3 June 2017 at 22:33 #584413 June 2017 at 21:06 #58437(Warning: Spoilers for this episode) First Thoughts:
Favourite line : ‘His son is serving 10 Years in a labour camp for possession of a box of comics.’
The Seine test proved to be not enough…
The Doctor has just manipulated Bill into shooting him and all he can say is: ‘I could do with a strepsil.’
Bill: ‘I’m gonna beat the sh…’
Missy: ‘I once built a gun out of leaves…’
Visions of Missy pushing a wee girl into a volcano…
A version of guid…
That Gallifeyan musical theme returns…
A myth broadcaster = (Fake News Central)
Defeat of the baddies is reminiscent of Rings of Akhaten’s ‘Clara’s leaf’…
Ignorant Miss Appalling Hair….
Missy’s redemption?!?
We learnt nothing about the Monks really. Maybe it’s not a bad thing?! Maintains their mystique @ least…
At least it wasn’t all a Bobby Ewing in the shower…..
P.S. – The Fan Show is great this week…
3 June 2017 at 17:53 #58432@fatmaninabox I hope that your return signals that you’re feeling much better, even if the world isn’t exactly much nicer…..
3 June 2017 at 12:12 #584111 June 2017 at 13:16 #58361@janetteb A ‘P Gang’ series is probably the last thing Moffat wants to do right now, but it’s nice to imagine what it would be like…..
1 June 2017 at 01:40 #58339@pedant Paul Gascoine now looks like Bamber Gascoine’s dad.
I’ve heard lots of interesting rumours today, the majority being about srs 11. But the most interesting one floating out there is that Moffat wants to do a Paternoster spin off series…..
1 June 2017 at 00:52 #583351 June 2017 at 00:42 #58334
Apparently it’s been there since the 17th of May. It’s taken a long time to notice!
But it does have a ring of truth about it. Should probably reduce the threat level to rumour though…..
Fun fact- If you type Gabriel Byrne Doctor Who into Google you still see it in the result.
31 May 2017 at 14:31 #58319So, as mentioned in post 58298, the Doctor programs the TARDIS for disguise as a pyramid. It doesn’t work of course, because the chameleon circuit is stuck… I couldn’t find the vid clip, so here’s the dialogue:
ADRIC: What do these numbers and letters mean?
DOCTOR: Well, it’s an early version. The instructions have to be punched in by machine code.
ADRIC: Oh, how boring.
DOCTOR: Boring? In theory we should be able to do things like this.
(The Doctor hits a few keys and the scanner draws an outline of a pyramid.)
DOCTOR: There. You have a door there.
ADRIC: Yes, I suppose that’s useful.
DOCTOR: Well, we’ve got to be able to get in and out.
ADRIC: No, no, I mean being able to change like that.
DOCTOR: That’s how the Master hid from us on Traken. Anyway, if this worked, I’d just have to punch a few buttons like this, and we’d be a pyramid.
(The scanner diagram becomes the familiar police box in space.)
30 May 2017 at 22:26 #58298Steven Moffat co-wrote the Tintin movie, so is probably aware of Rascar Capac (bloody creepy he is too!)
@lisa The TARDIS has already run the program for disguise as a pyramid – in ‘Logopolis’…..

On a sad note, (In the next issue of DWM) Steven Moffat reveals why this episode is not as strong as it should have been.

Bloody tragic.
Even if people don’t like Moffat’s stuff, it should be appreciated the guy hasn’t had a proper holiday for years. He works blinking hard on the show because he loves it.
30 May 2017 at 21:12 #58294Really hoping that Sutekh is the brains behind the Monks. I’d give that a standing ovation!
:origin()/pre04/2aac/th/pre/f/2010/016/9/1/doctor_who_anime___sutekh_by_mightyotaking.jpg)
The monks remind me of Rascar Capac from Tintin – a mummy that comes alive in everyone’s nightmares…..
30 May 2017 at 20:41 #58293I repeat. Bill’s phone ringtone could be of some significance. (see post 58281)
I noticed it before but I wanted to see if any other companions have had the same ringtone. I don’t really have the time to scan every episode to check this! I did do it with the Zygon 2-parter though – Clara’s mobile had a normal ringtone…
To be fair the Doctor hears it during the episode & makes no comment. Perhaps it’s reverted to being ‘the Dr Who theme’ & it was the Doctor who supplied it to Bill…..
30 May 2017 at 20:26 #58291If anyone wants to pore over the plot holes, the transcript of the episode is now online…
30 May 2017 at 17:44 #58281The Master’s quadruple beat (based on the Dr Who theme & the double heartbeat of a Time Lord, which became the Archangel Network signal & Four Knocks) is the ringtone for Bill’s mobile phone in this episode & the last…
30 May 2017 at 17:09 #58277Not very episode-specific but I like this song…..
30 May 2017 at 01:41 #58237As noted by others elsewhere online…..
They don’t use Google. Search engine of choice is GriffinFinder…
3614 combination may be a reference to Cher’s LP ‘3614 Jackson Highway’…
Bill’s jacket has Okinawa embroidered on the back. The Okinawa campaign was a fight between the US & the Japanese.
29 May 2017 at 21:40 #58228What happens if you find the Doctor’s shades?
29 May 2017 at 19:15 #5822429 May 2017 at 18:06 #58221Rachel Talalay is confirmed as the director of the Xmas Spesh. She’s currently hunting down locations.
I guess this means the 13th Dr is cast by now…
Also that deal the Beeb made with the Chinese means the next 5 series of Dr Who are assured…..
29 May 2017 at 12:47 #58214This episode was filmed at an old leper colony. It’s filled with interesting art. Well worth a Google image search if you can be arsed… sanatorio de abona an abandoned leper village
29 May 2017 at 02:12 #58193(Insomnia again…) Go 28 minutes into the ep &…..
Here’s most of the dialogue cut from the episode (but not the Amazon version) because of the Manchester attack:
Followed by the line:
DOCTOR: Plague. Terrorists discriminate.
28 May 2017 at 21:33 #58174Sorry – Another mistake… It should be:
Height: 167.6cm (5ft5)
