JimTheFish replied to the topic Part 3 – Once, Upon Time
I’ll just add my voice to the eloquent appeals above. I felt much the same way as you a year ago. I thought, I’ve finally gone past this (it only took 40-odd years) and that I was done. I was struggling to get through more than 10 minutes of a Chibs episode without my attention wandering. But this year, while it’s still far from perfect…[Read more]

@craig I’ll join with @cathannabel and @blenkinsopthebrave and @mudlark and @winston in thanking you so much for everything you’ve done for us in keeping this forum going.
I know it’s taken plenty of your time and energy (and some money too). It’s your gift, so if you’re weary, you should look after yourself first. We appreciate you.
But, I…[Read more]

@Craig Thanks – and yes it was my fault – I was trying to copy and paste too much Wikipedia about DNA separating techniques!
@claire54 My overall take is, now that we have a female doctor, the writers don’t know what to do with her.
Yes, unfortunately I do not think Chibnall has been equal to the task.
Elements which I’ve found jarring in the w…[Read more]

JimTheFish wrote a new post, Re-evaluating the Third Doctor
A FEW years back on this site, there was a fairly spirited discussion between myself and the late and much-missed @HTPBDET over the relative merits of the Third Doctor and as this week was the centenary of the […]

Juniperfish replied to the topic Jodie Whittaker announced as the new, 13th Doctor
Part of me cannot be bothered to engage with the one-off sign-ups who’ve joined to froth about the Doctor regenerating in a female body. But another part of me feels they should be anwered, publicly, despite the present age’s penchant for “edgy” ironic/ post-ironic trolling.
@jim4 whatever the truth of your nostalgic vision of early Who as for…[Read more]

You can probably count me among your number too. I have a funny feeling that there’s an old and occasionally heated dispute with @HTPBDET somewhere on the site about the relative merits of the 10/Rose scenario. My feeling is that it was something that had to happen to drag Who into the modern age and that RTD should be commended for…[Read more]

Yes, I haven’t forgotten the Who Forum and all you good folks on here – life has just been busy, and there has been no new Who to get our teeth into!
I’m pleased they’ve launched Class, however. We’ll see how it unfolds.
Thanks for the article link about the 50 years since regeneration 1 – I saw that on the Grauniad…[Read more]

Ah that is tough for you. Different Docs for different folks, I guess. I didn’t realise you were sitting on that one!
As @HTPBDET resisted all my attempts to get him to like Smith’s Doctor, I realise it’s simply whether the actor’s interpretation of the character “works” for someone, or not. And sometimes things change in…[Read more]

@Purofilion and @Geronimo – a lovely exchange.
Oh no @Puro – so very, very sorry to hear that. I think it’s clear many on the Doctor Who forum have loved your company along the way, and if you do want to stay, while you can, I’ve no doubt you’d be warmly welcome. You should do what’s best for you, of course.
We lost someone else, @HTPBDET ,…[Read more]

@TheKrynoidMan Good to hear you like it, always interesting to know what younger fans make of the old stuff.
And agree with the various posters that #3 is the weakest episode – the downside to multi-part stories, especially the 6-parters. Mostly this rattles along nicely. Troughton is great (and thanks @Craig for @HTPBDET‘s old avatar as the ID…[Read more]

@Barbaralefty BG Who was often notable for character driven stories, this particular one probably more than most. As you say it comes partly from having multiple episodes in which to tell the story and set up side characters. The down (and up) side of the format is that because it was shown over several weeks, with no oportunity to replay the…[Read more]

Craig started the topic The Enemy of the World part 1
The Doctor, Jamie and Victoria arrive on a beach on Earth in the future. The Doctor wants to have fun in the waves but they soon find themselves in danger, due to a case of mistaken identity.
Missing for years, this story was recently rediscovered and restored. We’re discussing this story as a tribute to our sadly departed contributor @HTPBDET…[Read more]

@Craig – I’ll happily go with @JanetteB @Bluesqueakpip @BarbaraLefty @Purofilion re Enemy. In honour of @HTPBDET is a lovely thought. Shame Troughton’s intro story Power of the Daleks is missing, it was a belter! But better to go with the cleaned up refreshed EotW than a recon. When do we start…??

Enemy of the World is also the only Dr Who story set in part in Australia, (though very evidently not filmed here.)
If we do watch it I will raise a glass to @HTPBDET when I watch. A lovely idea @Bluesqueakpip to honour our old friend.
Cheers

I would go for Web of Fear myself, but I do have a suggestion.
In memory of the late and sadly missed @HTPBDET, could we watch The Enemy of The World? That was where his avatar came from.
I remember, when we were all excited about the rediscovery, that he said Enemy of the World should preferably be seen before Web of Fear.

As the year draws to a close, I thought this might be appropriate time to raise a glass in The Cloven Hoof to absent friends.
First and foremost, there is @HTPBDET. Gone, but never forgotten.
Then there are those, like @wolfweed, who I hope will be with us again soon.
And then there are those, like @WhoHar and @chickenelly, who have been gone…[Read more]

That’s a nice timey-wimey Christmas wish @Arbutus 🙂
I’d like to raise a glass to @Craig for all his hard work creating and holding this charming Who space throughout the year.
And to our moderators past and present, currently @JimtheFish @FatManInABox and @Phaseshift for stirling services to keeping the sofa comfy.
And also a toast to absent…[Read more]

@Margaret-Blaine Nice to see a mention of @HTPBDET
I too think of him, and wonder what he would have made of the new series. He was a Clara fan but not a Smith fan. I think he’d have enjoyed Capaldi’s Doctor. I raise a glass to him – what a lovely man.
@PhileasF It’s obviously worth re-watching that post-it note scene with the pause button for…[Read more]
