Thanks for the answer. This Telegraph article made me laugh but to be fair the script was arvertised as the 8th Harry Potter book so I can understand why so many people feel cheated. But I mentioned it only because it was the reason I decided to read the Cursed Child plot summary. I don’t criticize the play as I haven’t seen it (I don’t agree with the story and for me it has nothing to do with Harry Potter canon so right now I’m not going to see the play as I don’t want to spoil my view on Harry) and the theatre is a completely diferent world. With lights, sounds, colors and scenery even an ordinary and silly story can turn into something spectacular. So Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play can be a really fantastic experiance and I understand the positives reviews. But I think the story is very poor. One prophecy too much, too much time travels and time-turners, too much events, too much past, the most stupid idea that Harry is responsible for the death of Cedric (why not for Snape’s?) and the characters out of the character.
Oh, and I read the plot summary of Hamlet on Wiki and I think everything is fine with this story.
I’m afraid that there will be no Harry Potter and the Cursed Child book. It’s only the script of the play and it’s not even written by J.K.Rowling.
2 August 2016 at 17:06 #53528Has anyone read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child? I haven’t but I read the report in The Teleghaph that many people feel cheated by the poor quality of the script so I decided to read the plot summary on Wikipedia. Maybe it works as a play but as a story it’s a load of rubbish. I’m a big fan of Harry Potter but with the heavy heart I have to agree with all negative comments posted on Twitter (spoilers).
31 July 2016 at 21:20 #53502Orphans (or half orphans) make the best companions. Yes or not. Discuss 😉
31 July 2016 at 21:12 #53501I’ve never rated these two episodes very highly. I’ve rather considered them as superficial and childish. But there’s no point in denying that Doctor Who has always been rather politicised and leftie and those two episodes are very leftie.
I’ve been thinking a lot about the British Labour Party lately because of the turmoil in their ranks. And that made me think that this Doctor’s attitude to sit down and talk some very serious and delicate matters through reminds me Jeremy Corbyn’s policy. He’s the controversial Labour Party leader who called talk to people from such organizations as Hezbollah which for many is the terrorist organization (EU recognizes Hezbollah’s political wing as a party and military wing as a terrorist organization) or Sinn Féin before the peace process. That’s all.
30 July 2016 at 21:25 #53484Is Steven Moffat a supporter of Jeremy Corbyn?
27 July 2016 at 23:31 #53448And Danny wasn’t jealous. He was worried that Clara will end up dead. And he was right.
27 July 2016 at 23:20 #53447Danny was the best character in season 8. The only person who was ready to take the responsibility for his action, who knew what he wants and what’s really important to him. He was honest, protective, smart and brave. Much more mature than Clara and Doctor together. And Doctor was really awful for him acting like a jealous papa. You have to make choices in your life and Clara was selfish and dishonest, didn’t want to make such choice. Shame Danny didn’t find a girl who would appreciate him fully. He didn’t deserve his fate.
17 July 2016 at 13:14 #53306@missy A very bold statement for someone who has never seen other Doctors. I bet Peter Capaldi is your first Doctor ever, isn’t he?
11 July 2016 at 09:49 #53221@geoffers I would like to see Lucie Miller but I think the whole story with Matt’s returning is a spoof.
8 July 2016 at 10:03 #53178@missy I think we are fully responsible for every word we are putting here. In other case everyone could copy and past some stuff from ISIS accounts on Twitter, or some hateful comments from Facebook or extracts from Mein Kamp and says I don’t know if it’s appropriate or I’m not sure about its accuracy but I’m only a messanger.
And this stuff you put here is inaccurate and biased. Cadbury did’t just move its factor to Poland. It bought in 1999 (Poland is the EU member from 2004) the rights to the brand of E.Wedel, the biggest polish producer of chocolate. In 2010 Cadbury Wedel was sold to Kraft Food but to avoid the monopolization of the choclate market in Poland the EU commision ordered to sold Wedel to another company. In 2010 Wedel was bought by the japanese concern LOTTE Group .
@puroandson Thanks for your comments. Both Czech and Slovakia are amazing tourist destinations and give great opportunities to the students. My friend went to Czech as an Erasmus student, she was really impressed and wanted to stay but she didn’t know the language. And I have two friends, one from Lithuania and one from Slovakia, also ex-Erasmus students who come to Poland and were so delighted with the school that they decided to stay and both have polish wives now and one of them has welcomed this year his first child. The choice where to study, work and live that gives us EU is one of the biggest achievement of the Union.
6 July 2016 at 11:30 #53128Shame on you @missy posting such things. Both Poland and Slovakia are not in the slighest less worthy countries than the Great Britain is. And Britons are not better than Poles or Slovaks. EU exists to serves all european countries and not only privileged Britons. Great Britain has more privileges than such countries as Poland and Slovakia but it seems that you have became too spoiled.
4 July 2016 at 22:05 #53093@pedant So it seems. And only yesterday I wrote him on Twitter to do not mind those #Chrexit comments. Will see how Matt LeBlanc will menage as a host. He’s an American so I don’t think he would think much about Clarkson’s ‘legacy’ and he knows how to play a role of an american ignorant.
3 July 2016 at 17:13 #53059It seems that dark clouds appeard on the horizon for Chris Evans as people get started to call for #Chrexit on Twitter.
I’ve never listened to his radio programme as I usually listen to BBC Radio 4. But I did it today (Friday’s programme). He’s really noisy but energetic and passionate. He could be more passionate as the Top Gear host. I think he is an interresting choice for the job, completely different from Le Blanc but the producers have to find a new formula, think through the nature of their relationship. It must be really hard for him to walk in Clarkson’s shoes.
30 June 2016 at 22:45 #53023Has anyone mentioned here the new Top Gear? I’m not a big fan but I watch it from time to time (practically every Sunday as BBC Brit shows a few episodes in a row with Clarkson and now the new episodes with Chris Evans). I’ve never been a fan of Clarkson who is a bully and a boor but he certainly knows his stuff. When I heard that Matt LeBlanc was appointed as one of the host of the programme I was rather sceptical as he’s such a wooden actor. But after two episode which I’ve seen I have to admit that he really knows what he’s doing. He cartainly loves cars and has his own opinions (or he plays well his role). It’s Chris Evans who seems adrift. When he speaks I have the impression that he just utters the lines he memorized from the script and has not the faintest idea about the cars (maybe except his own Rolls-Royce Corniche). And that squeaky voice of him…
29 June 2016 at 19:36 #52989The only way to cut immigration from such countries as Poland, Lithuania or Romania is to make an improvement in the standart of living in these countries. Do you know that a junior doctor in Poland earns less money than a picker in GB? 2.6 £ per hour.
29 June 2016 at 12:23 #52982@jimthefish @xad4 has nothing to do with my post above. Didn’t do anything wrong. Nor did I. But @puroandson marked me as a troublemaker and I disagree with that.
29 June 2016 at 11:22 #52980@puroandson or her sneering comment (I don’t know XAD4 gender, sorry for that).
29 June 2016 at 10:58 #52978@puroandson
There’s nothing incendiary in my comment. As CNBC is an american television channel and the only american politician who supports Brexit is Donald Trump and the article linked by @lisa is in favour of Brexit I assumed that it’s author shares some beliefs with Donald Trump.
I read the article and shared my reservations. That’s far more than XAD4 did with his sneering comment and it’s me who has been told off by you.
Maybe it’s easier for someone to talk about european situation right now without emotions when he/she lives in a country which don’t take refugees and has such strict immigration laws that doesn’t take disabled people or people with mental health problems because they would put too big strain on its health care system even if they can work and pay taxes.
28 June 2016 at 22:24 #52970@lisa My point was that it’s irrelevant for EU if GB is or isn’t the part of NATO. If you think that such issues as free movement and other EU rules can be negotiable why they are not for Norway and Switzerland? Rules are rules. If they make any concessions to GB other countries will ask for more for them. And you forget that other EU members want to stay toghether. Any concessions to GB will lossen unity and that’s not in anyone’s interest in EU.
28 June 2016 at 21:45 #52967@lisa I bet the author supports Donald Trump. It’s completely irrelevant that GB is the member of NATO. Turkey has the second after USA army in NATO and it’s not a mamber of EU. Today Angela Merkel said that there will bo no single market access without free movement and EU regulations in GB.
25 June 2016 at 12:16 #52909I think it’s the historical justice that Poland joined the UE. Poland was heavily affected by the WWII. We had the treatises with France and Britain in 1939 and it didn’t help us much. We fought for freedom together with GB against Germany and we ended up on the other side of the Iron Curtain. We didn’t deserve that. And if some English people don’t like poor immigrants from eastern Europe they should think why eastern countries are so poor and why these people seek a better life. The majority of them work honestly and pay their taxes. All these things against immigrants which were said in the campaign are so disappointing.
And I’m completely disappointed with the result of the referendum. Although I support Scotland’s rights to be independent country I was rather against that choice in 2014 mainly because of russian annexation of Crimea. I thought that Europe has to remain strong and united. But as GB wants to leave EU it’s not the case any more. This will affect all of us. I hope we’ll stay united in EU.

For those who are interested in art history and feminism here’s one of the crucial texts on the matter by Linda Nochlin ‘Why have there been no great woman artists?’. Short but very accurate.
19 June 2016 at 00:02 #52753@puroandson @missy
But we have to remember that it’s still entertainment for the masses with really big history and not someone’s manifesto. Maybe we should celebrate both sexes but not by switching them but by creating new strong female characters of their own (The Journey of River Song, the woman whose husband is the Doctor (not the woman who is Doctor’s wife) and steer the Tardis better than he does and cheated him so many times that he shouldn’t be so full of himself) like Xena series which was spin-off Hercules and was a bigger success and made much more bigger impact).
I don’t think that someone who is against female Doctor cannot be a feminist or has to be a sexist. I’m kind of a feminist but I have very, very ambivalent feelings towards the idea.
18 June 2016 at 10:54 #52748@puroandson
I think you answered your own question.
I wrote that because I want to be objective. But as I fancy Doctor I’ve never fancied Xena. I like her because of her woman’ s power.
Hercules was never such a success as Xena. I read somewhere that Sorbo was envious of Xena’s success and accused the script witers that they made his charachter so flawless that he wasn’t as intereasting as Xena. And Xena is the Lesbian icon and has rather big fanbase. There are plans to reboot the series but without Lucy Lawless which is really outrageous. She looks really great but it seems that for the producers she’s too old.
17 June 2016 at 11:45 #52734@puroandson @missy
Maybe I shouldn’t said that I’m mocking the idea of changing sex in DW but instead that the idea that they can do that just like that, smoothly, without any further questions.
17 June 2016 at 10:22 #52730@puroandson
Hello Son of Puro, I’m reall glad that you have such conversations at school. My country was taken last year by the politicians who believe that if you are not a white, heterosexual catholic (and a man) you deserve to be punished so I don’t think teachers in my country want to have such conversations with their students. I’m afraid it’s a growing trend in Europe these days.
But I’m sure you didn’t discuss mocking the idea of changing sex IN DOCTOR WHO. I also believe that „people are people no matter their lifestyle or colour, sex or gender-type”. I assume that by introducing the sex changing Moffat and his writers wanted to do something really good for LGBTQ people ans women in general. But they intruduced something that hadn’t been there for 50 years. They told us that Time Lords can regenerate into man or a woman but the main hero lived his tvelve lives and was never a woman. So it raises the questions. Why not? Is he too good to be a woman or maybe he’s too masculine? The answer is obvious. He was’t a woman because no one changed his/her sex is the last 50 years. But we are to believe that they did. And another thing, people don’t change their sex because they have a whim. They do that because they suffer and feel very, very uncomfortable with their sex which is completely incompatibile with their notion of themselves. And we have the General who was ten times a woman and one time a man. But as @bluesqueakpip pointed out she didn’t enjoy the experience.
Puro, I meant that they can’t be really honest with the idea as long as they don’t change the sex of the Doctor. In other words no real equality (eating a cake) with male Doctor (having a cake).
Missy doesn’t count because she isn’t a protagonist. And I don’t want Doctor to be a woaman as I don’t want Xena the Warrior Princess to be Xenus the Warrior Prince 🙂 . Xena was such a strong, female character. It wouldn’t work if she was a man. But her sex was really important for the character. I don’t think it’s so important for the Doctor.
16 June 2016 at 22:39 #52720@bluesqueakpip I guess you are completely right but as discussing Doctor Who is a pure pleasure for me you have to be prepared that I will challenge you for discussion’s sake 😉
@missy I’m afraid language is full of sexism, racism and other -isms but I was only mocking the idea of changing sex in DW.
15 June 2016 at 22:42 #52707Moffat created the society in which everyone can be a man or a woman. He made sort of a statement. But I don’t think this is the real equality. As every man can change into a woman it’s rather convenient to treat woman equally (no man wants to ‘suffer’ from being a woman). But as Moffat said categorical no to female Doctor (there’s the interview on BBC iplayer in which Moffat is clearly stating that there’s no room for female Doctor) I don’t think he was (really, really) genuine in this matter. It’s not an issue for me really. I’m not a big fan of female Doctor so I didn’t like the idea of changing sex from the start.
But I would welcome another strong, independent, brilliant, female character (Missy doesn’t count as she is a villain). So maybe it’s worth a try with another writer.
15 June 2016 at 10:22 #52705If every Time Lord and Time Lady can change his and her sex and the only Time Lord who will never change his sex is the Doctor it appears that this show is really really sexist.
It’s worth noting that Doctor lived all his 12 lives and was never a woman. That’s very sexist of him.
I don’t want Doctor to be a woman and I think they went too far with this sex switching. You can’t have your cake and eat it.
20 May 2016 at 19:33 #52429Misery, loss and death are always good entertaintment. As long as they don’t concern you. But maybe I shouldn’t express my opinion as now I’m probably not a ‘model spectator’ in Umberto Eco’s words.
9 May 2016 at 00:10 #52218@puroandson
Oh, I’m sorry, I forgot to mention that, I don’t count Clara because he loved her enormously like no other Doctor before loved any other companion. But as I said he’s very chaotic in his emotions. Two and a half season and I don’t know what kind of Doctor he is. Don’t get me wrong. I adore Peter Capaldi. He has such positives vibes and I just want Doctor to be more positive, more successful and happier. Life is enough miserable to watch how a guy with a time machine can’t save his beloved. How we, ordinary people can not be doomed?
I bet you think that what I write is complete nonsense so that’s enough for me for now.
8 May 2016 at 12:12 #52210Please, reveal me the secret, when exactly 12th was a) sympathetic, b) empathic 🙂 Besides, his focus on a task and lack of emotional response is not a problem for me. 4th was not very emotional, and rather absent but watching him you were sure that he had the best interest of everyone (except villains) at his heart. The same 9th. And they’re my favourites. I think it’s the fact that they’ve tried so many different personality traits on 12th that’s he’s walking emotional chaos.
6 May 2016 at 08:28 #52155“What, are you gardeners? I hate gardening! What sort of a person has a power complex about flowers? It’s dictatorship for inadequates. Or to put it another way, it’s dictatorship”.
So many dicators here? Monty Don, you are so ruthless!
I don’t have my own garden, but I cultivate cacti (the only plants that can stand my poor care. I have big specimens which blossom every year with magnificent big flowers). And my favourite time of the year is early spring when plants are in a state between decay and growth.
5 May 2016 at 13:27 #52141It seems that we have completely different expectations. That’s completely understandable.
For me there’s nothing wrong in another standard comic-book superhero — save ’em, lose ’em, all in a day’s work, and all forgotten by next week’s issue or episode (nicely said). I think that has been the story of the Doctor for the last 50 years.Yes, Doctor has his issues (Amy’s choice, The God complex) but his state of mind was never a subject of any season.
That the Doctor keeps his sensitivity about death even after seeing so much of it (let alone enduring a form of it himself when he regenerates) makes him “real” as a character and makes us care about him.
I don’t think the opposition of sensivity in this case is insensivity but understanding. And there’s another thing which completely pissede me of. The Doctor who was friends with so many people, saved so many and lost so many, couldn’t understand that people mourned the death of their fellow crew members (famous cards in Under the Lake). Sensitivity is not the word which describes him in this scene. For many people that was very funny, I felt rather disappointed.
Seasons 8 and 9 was the story of over 2000 years old man who need to grow up. Doctor lost his authority. And that’s what he was for me. The Authority.
3 May 2016 at 14:42 #52092@bluesqueakpip this is a very serious lecture. Thanks for the link. I will read it very carefully.
3 May 2016 at 11:08 #52088@ichabod That’s my chief argument against 12. You can expect that 2000 years old man will be more stoic in the face of death and loss. If you deal with people you have to be prepared for them passing. I thought he figured it out. But it seems that he’s less mature than some of his human companions. Maybe he should take a lesson from Adelaide Brooke. What a creepy episode it was!
@puroandson mentioned Pertwee, the bit mischievous, little authoritarian, old-school Doctor. And I would like 12 to be like that, but he’s in constant depression and I deal with depression in my closest family and I don’t want my favourite hero to be depressed too. I have it every day. So that’s not really entertaining for me. I would like to see in the Doctor a bit of this positive energy which Peter Capaldi has.
1 May 2016 at 22:01 #52035I said once that Paul McGann was the worst Doctor ever (I feel really guilty about that). I was wrong. It wasn’t his fault that this movie was so terrible. He was terrific in the Big Finish productions. With no doubt he was the most sensitive Doctor.
I’ve been thinking how 10 and 11 could be so traumatized after the Day of the Doctor. If all 13 Doctors saved Gallifrey, all of them should know that they didn’t destroy it and should remember how they saved it together. At least 9, 10, and 11. Do series 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 depict alternative timeline which was rewritten? Or I missed something?
1 May 2016 at 17:43 #52032@bluesqueakpip @TheConsultingDoctor so Christopher Eccleston is 10, David Tennant 11, Matt Smith 12, Peter Capaldi 13? No way 🙂 It’s the price of the return of the Time Lords.
Moffat considered 9 as the one to blew up Gallifrey but he new that Ecclestone would say NO! I don’t know why he didn’t pick 8 but I guess 8 was almost a complete stranger for many younger fans (not to mention that he wasn’t the most charismatic Doctor) and of course Paul McGann is not an actor of the same calibre as John Hurt. So Moffat created the War Doctor or something like that (I’m so thankful for sparing 9!)
1 May 2016 at 13:07 #52023I love Peter Capaldi and that how he enjoys playing/being the Doctor (it’s obvious that he has much fun) but I would like to see more of this positive energy in the Doctor. I want to see the Doctor who enjoys being himself. He speaks a lot that he saves people but he failed to save major characters like Clara, Danny, Osgood, Ashildr.
30 April 2016 at 20:32 #52010Given later developments, I suspect the TARDIS can be retconned as knowing when Tegan needed to leave, rather than when she wanted to leave (which was almost the second she stepped into the TARDIS) – and so simply refused to land at the right place and time until that point was reached.
Well said, @bluesqueakpip, I like this interpretation.
30 April 2016 at 16:57 #52008The appointment of Pearl Mackie as the new companion made me think about diversity in Doctor Who.
In the renewed series we had so far 5 companions and 3 of them were Londoners and 2 moved to London. (London, London, London, Leadworth (moved to London), Blackpool (moved to London, I bet Bill is from London).
According to Wikipedia „London is one of the most ethnically diverse cities on Earth”. In 2011 59.8% of London residents were White, 18.4 % were Asian, 13.3 % were Black.
„37% of the population were born outside the UK, including 24.5% born outside of Europe”.
But we can hardly see this in the companions’ names and surnames which are: Rose, Martha, Donna, Amelia, Clara, Bill (Bille, William, Wilhelmina?) Tyler, Jones, Noble, Pond, Oswald, ?
30 April 2016 at 09:15 #51998Janet Fielding played Tegan, a companion of 5th Doctor, one of my favourites. Next to Adric, who was mathematical prodigy and Nyssa who was very smart, Tegan was rather dumb. But she never cared about that. She was like I’m a human and I’m not going to feel ashamed that I know nothing about time and space and mathematics and stuff like that. She didn’t hesitate to challenge the Doctor and sometimes made him really irritaded. I think she was a kind of a character which you love or hate.
30 April 2016 at 01:00 #51985I guess you are right, they should be nosy. But I’ll give another example. Silence in the Library, poor miss Evangelista, a ditsy secretary who had to endure cruel teasing from members of the crew who ought to be her colleagues. Only Donna showed her charity. And she had no knowledge nor skills of these people. I think Doctor benefits the most from companions who makes up for their “ignorance” by their nobility. Remember that Martha considered blowing up the whole planet. Donna was one of the most “useless” companions and look what impact she’s had.
29 April 2016 at 20:31 #51981As we today celebrate the tenth anniversary of the reunion of 10 and fantastic Sarah Jane Smith I would like to express my hope that one day we will see another reunion as Janet Fielding looks so great.
28 April 2016 at 20:53 #51959I get messages only from these freak bot people so I’m in favour too. It’s so disappointing when I get a notification from the site and it turns out to be one of those messages.
27 April 2016 at 15:16 #51937How the papers reacted to the Hillsborough inquest verdict.
26 April 2016 at 20:44 #51923They had their chance to print the truth (or just stayed silent). They chose to print lies. I doubt whether there are people who care that they printed their ‘real’ truth. I don’t know why they bothered. Did they expect that people would forgive them (I doubt) or start to buy their paper again?
26 April 2016 at 18:25 #51921
@jimthefish @bluesqueakpip haven’t you seen this cover? This is such an amazing day for Liverpudlians. Shame not all from Hillsborough families lived to see this.
26 April 2016 at 10:44 #51915@blenkinsopthebrave I’m sorry you are disappointed but Martha was the companion who could be respected intellectually and even scientifically. She was one of the smartest companion of the renewed series. And she didn’t have a big career both as a doctor and companion. I think the essence of a human companion is that she or he is not the Doctor and has no special skills like Rose, Donna or Amy. Their specialties are their goodnes and compassion. And I think that is the message. You don’t have to be very smart and skilful and powerful. As far as you have a big heart you are worth the attention and respect. And even Romana who was brilliant (I hope she still is somewhere in e-space or Gallifrey) played some kind of a role of a damsel in distress.
