@Ichabod– I know about ‘Station Eleven” thru another friend that loves anything
apocalypse-y doom gloom conspiracy theory etc. He tells me its a reaction to his
formative years growing up in Nottingham and actually I’ve heard some of those stories
It was tough but I don’t think I know all of it. He’s doing ok though cause of his
cleverness he has a nice life now. I think he could probably write a good apocalypse story
to be honest. I’ve told him once or twice to try.
Seriously I read the same way you do including lots of stuff on line too. Also love the free
books online and blogs–always have my face in front of something sucking up words as
as often as I can spare the time for it30 January 2015 at 21:24 #37690@ichabod I forgot about Fortitude-what did I miss? I guess Geoffreu Palmer does have some pinchy
jowlies doesn’t he! Dare I say a bit pug-able huggable? So what are you reading now? I have
too many choices between the new stack and the old unfinished dust collecting stack that stares
at me disparagingly. [I often have trouble finishing many books but I love starting them] My new
stack includes a new Stephen King called ‘Doctor’ and a Malcolm Gladwell and I’m really looking
forward to the new JD Salinger a lot…..just always curious about what’s in other peoples piles:-)30 January 2015 at 01:15 #37682I bet some of you knew all of these double-headers but a few were real surprises to me! I didn’t know
about Clara’s grannie or Mr. Hopper plus 4 others. I sometimes get hungry for news about the filming of
the next series so then I go poking around for little ‘jelly baby crumbs’ now and then. This site
usually has nice fun niblettes.29 January 2015 at 23:57 #37680Sympathies to the Aussie readers -writers- Who-sters on the passing of Colleem McCullough RIP
She was a excellent and prolific writer. I always meant to read 1 of her Rome books- I must do that!29 January 2015 at 04:29 #37662So following thru on these conversations recently around fanfic and mashups etc. I thought I’d
post this conversation by the writer Seth Grahame-Smith since he mentions some of these same
topics in a engaging and interesting way. He’s the guy that wrote the ‘Pride and Prejudice and
Zombies’ and ‘Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter’ and he has a new 1 called the ‘Last American
Vampire’. If ever there was a confluence of fanfic and mashing up this might just be your guy!
I enjoyed hearing his take on the future for writing and his own writing process but quite
honestly these Google talks are usually ‘good stuff’26 January 2015 at 16:44 #37622@Purofilion – So I’m not sure about which frame you are talking about but the minutes you gave
are a Cowboy on a horse and that might be Holden but at the very end of the vid I think that’s
John Wayne in the doorway. If you watch it on You Tube and if you look at the ‘more info’ part
underneath it tells all the movie answers. Glad you had fun with it! I like the way this guy
tried to match up the scenes somewhat to the music too. Plus he chose some ‘choice’ scenes.
Would like to see him make another!26 January 2015 at 02:56 #37612@craig – Seeing that you have a strong affection recently for ‘mash ups’ thought I would throw
some fuel on this for you and share a alternative mash up – this is a old movies mash up but
great editing and a classic good old tune too! Hope you find it entertaining
25 January 2015 at 02:18 #37597That was fun! I like the dictator hair a lot better on Troughton – the beatles hair do was more
don’t at least for me. This was a shy guy doctor guessing from the swimming scene [and not like our
Matt Doc] I also liked the 60’s esthetic too. Thanks for putting this up for us great Emperor!
Cant wait to see more24 January 2015 at 03:24 #37571@ichabod -Yeah I believe you might be onto something for a new game! Do we have any dedicated
game players here that would know about anything similar out there? Might be able to also
incorporate principles of Chess or perhaps maybe Mahjong which although I think that
originated in China I think it was also played in Japan possibly around that time. I like
the game within a game thing – many different levels are good 🙂
Regarding Happy Valley- I’m looking forward to seeing series 2 which I think is up-coming
next year sometime and of course more Tango in Halifax and basically any thing voming
from Ms. Sally W.24 January 2015 at 03:02 #37569So btw I just finished watching the BBC series ‘Happy Valley’. Excellent writing and acting too IMHO
by Sally Wainwright. She also did Tango in Halifax but what I find particularly interesting is that
she also wrote ‘Sparkhouse’ which was a modern Wuthering Heights. I guess that has to be sort of
fanfic? So she had a history in fanfic before finding success as a BBC writer. Anyone that has not
seen any of these series you are totally in for a treat!24 January 2015 at 02:04 #37565Wow -dropping in and finding dozens of posts on the art of writing and fanfic etc. Loved the gardening
and engineering concepts – but isn’t it true it must be some of both. A stories rhetoric has to be tended
and cultivated as a garden but you also have to keep a spread sheet going for all the research I would
imagine? That was always my impression. I’m reluctant to add anything on writing cause I never follow thru
myself on tale telling. I pretty much just imagine bits for my own entertainment and I guess that’s the
test really about becoming a writer isn’t it?
The idea of comparing medieval eras of Europe and Japan seems like a very rich and rewarding history
subject for teens since it has that element of being like ‘a fantasy time’, doesn’t it ?
Considering we are in the age of Game of Thrones and karate classes and Video games with sword play.
I bet it is a very appealing subject that engages them a lot.23 January 2015 at 02:45 #37504@Janette– I know exactly what you are referring to about Facebook and I totally agree except
strangely I find it a useful resource! The way I use it is by liking all the pages that refer
to specific subjects such as food or in my case gardening or history or whatever topics
you might be interested in. Then you will get a ‘feed’ page which you can follow that will
have all sorts of goodies. So the pages I ‘liked’ have their own pages that they like and that is
how I grew a ‘like’ list. The Nourished Kitchen page led me to the Fine Dining page which led me
to local farmer markets and local favorite restaurants I didn’t know about otherwise.
Anyway, this is how I use Facebook totally unrelated to how most folks I suppose would use it.
I thought it may help to inspire you a little with your food blog? So go for it with that blog and
good luck!22 January 2015 at 19:44 #37482@barbaralefty and @arbutus as well as some of the other Who-sters on the forum — just want to say
that I can tell you are writers by the level of sophistication in your posts and can I say that its
a treat to read them! I’m not a writer but I am definitely a reader. I suppose this is the case cause
if I have had a occasional idea usually when I cant sleep I’m too lazy to get up and write.
Or it may happen when I’m driving but no dedication to pulling over– So there ya go.
What I will do instead is leave an occasional comment on political you tube vids and on a few forums.
I will definitely read anything either of you have written – post it here !!21 January 2015 at 00:43 #37449@barnable — Nope- still cant make it thru any of those tunes either
Its all too sing-song-sang-twang-a-lang and makes me cringe music and tempts
me to want to do goofy undignified inappropriate behaviors even in public places.
Oddly that reminds me of this tune somehow cause of maybe the title –
this 1 is ok but even this is still a little too country
20 January 2015 at 22:59 #37446@Craig– AHHH ! street fight —lol 🙂
20 January 2015 at 22:51 #3744519 January 2015 at 19:12 #37428@The Krynoid Man – Its no secret that Led Sep was deeply influenced by the blues and also went on to
influence many major current music makers — I think in all the arts there is always massive borrowing.
But what they did with their music was a revelation — 4 musicians that instinctually took the music to
a new place !1 of many led zep favs !
19 January 2015 at 04:39 #37417@phaseshift Otis Lee reinforces my notion that any country music lyric can be made much improved 🙂
@scaryb I actually love lots of music – and don’t love lots of music – rock-jazz- blues -love
Chopin’s nocturnes and Vivaldi 4 seasons to led Zep to Koko Taylor, Ronettes Norah Jones Moby
Janis Joplin Astrid Giberto Tom Waits Sarah Macglachlin Miles Davis and so on and on…..
If all country music was like Stevie Ray Vaughn with his guitar genius then I guess I might be more
partial to it- maybe?19 January 2015 at 03:34 #37409I just tried listening to all the ‘country’ song contributions and sorry guys- this sort of music brings
me down and I couldn’t listen to any of it all the way thru. But there are a few gifted ‘country’ talents
that have been known to pump out some good tunes now and then –here and there –
I do like this 1
Still,I particularly like it when they don’t sing with a country sound
19 January 2015 at 03:04 #37406@Purofilion I believe that Willow and Wesley got married for real
Buffy series 3 was my personal favorite -I would not have minded more of the twisted fun of the Mayor
and after they all graduated from Sunnydale high there was no more meeting with Giles in the Library
But each season had great episodes like Hush. Btw- the ‘gentlemen’ in Hush also remind me a bit of
the Silence without the creepy smiles. [a missed opportunity maybe in the mouth design?]19 January 2015 at 01:21 #37398@purofilion The whisper men and Buffy — brilliant ! Thanks for filling in the cracks.
I think you totally got it.
I want to see both episodes over again. SM has totally seen Buffy.14 January 2015 at 21:10 #37311@craig I thought about your post and yes – I was definitely referring to the ‘new global pop country’.
The older style country was sometimes more blues-y and/or rockabilly etc. and there were some good
songs and the artists seemed more connected to their music. Some of it was even more sophisticated. Allman
Brothers also made good country/rock/blues and there are some others but even so most of the old stuff
still just makes me cringe.
Especially the ‘twangy’ harp tunes . Ugh!14 January 2015 at 00:45 #37300@craig –Regarding the mash up music – Unfortunately I’m one of those Americans that feels this is
just another example of miserable country music that objectifies some horrible notions. It shows
that the full force of American culture isn’t always contributing value to Earth society.
Country music ALWAYS has same formular and nothing to say
There’s no need now to listen to any more country music ever cause you just heard it all !13 January 2015 at 18:22 #37287more fan cleverness
13 January 2015 at 18:16 #37286awesome sauce!!!
9 January 2015 at 03:47 #37119@ichabod You are seriously crushing on CapDoc ! Yep – definitely in heat !
just saying…..:)8 January 2015 at 01:53 #37090So Santa brought the threat as Xmas gifts? Hm ? Don’t know if I feel good about blaming old Santa.
We are going into slightly villainous territory attributing some very unusually dark behavior to
Santa with that thinking? But was this why the Doctor shows up on the roof and tells Clara to get into
the Tardis – to get her away from what he assumes is a bad Santa? Nice and very creepy!
But I’m also still leaning on and thinking that it was the Doctor who was the first crabbing attack
but how did that occur? Santa may have found Clara and Doctor in a state of crabbed-ness is how
I still feel for the moment. Santa didn’t deliver the crabs to them. He had to have just discovered
Clara and the Doctor that way and joined in the dream party.7 January 2015 at 17:50 #37073possibly coming to a gotham metropolis near you
7 January 2015 at 05:13 #370577 January 2015 at 02:50 #370537 January 2015 at 02:48 #37052@janeette Always tempted to say jelly babies because of my avatar it just seems appropriate ?
[although jelly baby ‘crumbs’? is that a thing ? can jelly babies crumble? does anyone want
to eat a crumbly jelly baby?] So I went for the bread crumbs but also agree that jammy
dodgers crumble and are very nice indeed!7 January 2015 at 01:52 #37048@Barbara Lefty He said that the name of his character will be Prentis like in the Sorcerers
ap ‘prentice’? a nice bread crumb but hungry and wanting more breadcrumbs !! 🙂
[put me on record for predicting possible computer app called Prentice ?]7 January 2015 at 00:23 #37041astonishing piece of film
6 January 2015 at 23:54 #37039http://www.cultbox.co.uk/news/headlines/game-of-thrones-actor-joins-doctor-who-season-9
doesn’t seem to be spoiler -ishy
6 January 2015 at 23:35 #37035@craig and all – Wish there was more 8th Doctor but if we do Night of the Doctor then it maybe
nice to first re-watch Brain of Morbius for the gang of ‘Cairn” ?
I was thinking at some point of re-visiting all the Dalek episodes all in order or maybe
all the Sontaran episodes or something like that but really need a ‘push’ to get going on it
[or maybe I need a forum :} ]6 January 2015 at 21:06 #37026So to start off this new year I’d like to share my favorite esoteric monk speaking about
‘spirituality’ of space – he is always fun and always has some good ideas to share
This 1 is about taking the spacious view … [but not space aliens]
just an interesting perspective5 January 2015 at 23:19 #37005@bluesqueakpip Regarding Ashley – I think after witnessing the creature exploding on her
pillow she might want to ‘scientifically’ investigate what that was about ? I could see
that happening and then possibly finding her way into UNIT ? [I wouldn’t write that off
but it could also just be a bonkers theory]5 January 2015 at 21:09 #36990@arbutus and @Ichabod- 1 of my new favorite habits is reading your posts![and yes so many
amazing posters here too.] “But I really like thinking about the stuff I really like
thinking about” in regards to the Doctor – and absolute ditto that!
I guess I will have to do another re-watch and this time watch it as if it was
entirely Clara’s dream with both dialogue and incidents all being perpetuated out of her head.
Although it seems as though there was group participation and maybe there was some.
But its just this idea about how much do we allocate to the environment of Clara’s mind.5 January 2015 at 16:30 #36980@purofilion OOPS! shoot me now – its gonna be ok puro
On the Clara topic- So yes really hope she can pull it together and no Its not clear to me that
she can yet – traumatic incidents always have a way of sticking with all of us thru our lives
In any case I cant wait for series 9 to see if it was too much shock for Clara that carries thru
but its definitely not the one main mysterious bits and pieces of stuff!
I have a very long and intriguing list of bits 🙂5 January 2015 at 04:42 #36959@ichabod – I really agree about Danny being her safe normal guy that helped her maintain a normal
girl life and all the lies were necessary to protect that lifestyle . But what will happen now that
this balancing act has crashed? She doesn’t get to stay in the Christmas dream [although for a moment
she tried resisting the Doctors attempts to wake her]. She still goes off to face challenges and wont
accept failure. She is trying to be like a Buffy – another alpha female tv character. Buffy had a mental
crash too but she also had a Scooby gang to support her back. Clara could use some of that!
or even an Orson maybe? It isn’t clear to me that Clara isn’t still lying to herself about how she feels?@nsgirl13 – I thought of her Dad but it puts her dad on the list twice then [I think]? Depends if
it was Clara’s or Shona’s list too.3 January 2015 at 22:30 #36898@ichabod Yes Clara sets very high standards for herself and her highest standard is too emulate
her mentor/guru the Doctor . She is also the Doctors ‘care taker’ which is a kind of marriage thing
for him which is why part of his jealousy over Danny perhaps at first. With the exception of Rose
he has always seen his close companions as brothers, sisters, maybe father figure in Wilfred so
I also don’t think the Doctor sees Earth residents as pets any more than how he sees any other
species but you cant like everyone all of the time.
Also, I don’t agree that Clara doesn’t care about others but she cares a very great deal about
being an alpha female/leader type which leaders no matter who or what they are leading always
seem to have off putting characteristics. Alpha personalities are always willing take on challenges
and are generally very failure adverse. I have also been wondering about Clara’s desire to stay inside
of the Christmas dream because it felt ‘safe’. Its been a rough season for her and she almost lost it
but that’s for maybe the Christmas thread.
Now that she is staying on I expect there will be some very interesting twists coming up with her.3 January 2015 at 03:13 #36861@cedarbranchtardis You can have great minds but still not have the ‘common’ sense to make
the smartest choices. It happens on planet Earth every day. I know it may sound bizarre
but having intelligence is only 1 element and then you also have to get these smart folks
to properly collaborate to an effective end too. I guess different Galifreyans had
political differences just like how it happens here
Daleks seemed to of been better on the cohesive team work thing which is sort of significant3 January 2015 at 02:38 #36856@Janette – Good luck with the fire storm. You live in a part of the world similar to where I live
it seems. [I’m in California] I took a peak on Google maps at the Adelaide area which looks
really nice to me. The suburbs look just like here, the plants all look the same down to the
Eucalyptus trees which are beautiful trees and the downtown reminds of New Orleans with all the
awnings and terraced buildings. I guess its more humid maybe but otherwise I think that it
has a lot of appeal! We also get the fire hazards and the past few years some worrisome
drought conditions too but this winter we had some decent rain and I hope you have some rain
coming soon to help put the fire down. About the snow– I grew up with snow in a northern snow
state and I don’t miss it . I much rather visit it and then be able to say bye.
I hope that you and all your neighbors and communities wont have to sustain a lot of lose!
Best wishes!1 January 2015 at 23:19 #36815@bluesqueakpip Totally agree with 99% of your thoughts but not on board with the rock bottom part
[maybe]? This is because Clara sets high standards for herself. Remember the scene where she
looks in the mirror and says “I can do this!”. Its the paradox of being less about success and
more about avoiding failure. She reminds me of those folks that exude self confidence from every
pore but inside they feel failure. She needs to hear the Doctor’s approval- “Was I a good Doctor”
and she is emotionally shaky still IMHO and continues to carry around a lot of baggage
So I still think that she feels caught between a rock and a hard place and its complicated and
it can be very uncomfortable and very challenging but she is hooked on traveling with the
Doctor and ‘she can do this’
All I’m saying is if series 9 continues to push her into situations then I wonder if Clara can
sustain it?1 January 2015 at 18:47 #36800Clara was aspects of all those characters not just the Doctor but another clue for me was
the dream crabs as they were surely some aspect of the dream patches. Our dreams are often cries
out to be rescued from our real lives and this Christmas episode was for me sadly a glimpse into
Clara’s trauma of how part of her feels about traveling with the Doctor.
She has been gradually twisting inside her mind and maybe starting to loose her “wits”?
She puts up a strong face against everything she has been thru but we all can suddenly
crack. I hope that Clara’s dreams serve to help her avoid breaking down from the pressure
I think she’s feeling. I wonder if we get a new breakdown in series 9?1 January 2015 at 03:34 #36772@xad4 Thanks for the link to Forty Something! It look like a lot of fun and what a super cast!
You can find the most amazing things from everywhere on everything on You Tube.
Between YT and forums and favorite blogs and online books and news etc. and so on
there are always so many exiting online choices to connect with!1 January 2015 at 02:14 #36770@ all- I hope everyone will have a dynamite and very lucky 2015! So apparently we move into
the year of green wooden sheep which is super exiting and confusing together all at once. I
didn’t know green sheep were a natural phenomenon so it must be one of those new scientific
achievements. As long as it represents good things we should all be ok.
Its been a privilege to hang out with all of you thru the fantastic series 8.
Good bye 2014 and Happy Who year to all of you!31 December 2014 at 16:11 #36740Happy New Years to everyone in this corner of the galaxy! Dug up this from a few years
back on some nifty ideas for celebrating a New Years Who holiday party…..31 December 2014 at 03:39 #36719@Janette Local Hero is a wonderful film! I’ve seen it many many times and its always a treat.
I am looking forward to the series 9 and also hope to see more Paternoster gang
or possibly a new gang that includes maybe River and Perkins. I like gang episodes
[like Dinosaurs on a Spaceship and Stolen Earth] wonder if the new series will do
that. I’d definitely be really happy to see any ‘recent’ past Doctors brought
back and I hope they throw in at least a few Galifrey breadcrumbs. Maybe they can
bring back Tom Doc to do another help locate Galifrey scene? Of course Missy will
return but is there a decent chance for more Dr. Skarosa?
In any case the waiting is going to be anguishing but I will be constantly checking
for any tiny bitty bit of the filming leakage.31 December 2014 at 00:06 #36701I found Danny Pink
not a PE or Maths teacher in this incarnation – he’s an author about business and the workplace
It seemed a strange circumstance because of the name. I got curious and did try to find some
other similarities but nothing yet. But who’d of thunk it? How many Danny Pinks are there?
He used to be a speechwriter for Al Gore {ex-vice president of US} and now I’m intrigued and actually
want to read some of his stuff.
Just thought to share it forward…. -
