@nerys another issue is that if everyone remembers all the attempted invasions and catastrophes the Earth in Doctor Who will move further and further away from real life which would be problematic for any story set in the present.

@glasgowboy Why wasn’t Bill imprisoned from the start?
As the one who made the link, she’s supposed to have a more or less normal life and have kids, one of whom will carry on the link, as explained by — Missy? That’s less likely in a prison than living a relatively protected life at large.
@pedant “In amongst seven billion, there’s…[Read more]

The fact that it wasn’t the first time, just makes it worse.

The people of this fictional earth will forget anything and everything the writer or show runner wants. That’s hardly a valid point.
I think you’d also have to distinguish between something quite isolated and local (or in the depths of History) which might well pass into folk law or government cover up and hence into the…[Read more]

Pish. The people of Earth have forgotten:
Giant cyberman stomping across Victorian London
Giant fish eating Regency Londoners
Starship Titanic nearly crashing into London
The Sontarans gassing the Earth
More Cybermen
The Battle of Canary Wharf
Earth being stolen.
And that is just NuWho, as @wolfweed notes.
That’s t…[Read more]

@nerys the final scene between bill and the doctor. You’re correct the very last scene was with Missy. No transcript available yet (so far as I can see yet). The Doctor asked a passing student what the (remains) of the statue were., whilst the two of them were musing on recent events.

We are debating the last minute, the final scene of the episode. Nothing more or less. In the final scene the conversation with the passing student sets a scene where as soon as the mind link was gone, everyone forgot what had happened for the last 6 months, the physical evidence (which was not insubstantial) ignored and…[Read more]

@Nick Why depict thought police, interment or labour concentration camps if there isnt a dramatic reason for doing so.
I don’t want to gang up on you here… But…..
The depiction was it. The problem of being a 42 minute show. It may have seemed like a setup but it was just shorthand. If it was an hour long show or a movie, we may have seen…[Read more]

I’m not going to get into any argument with either of you about the nature of science fiction verses science fantasy verses speculative fiction here, nor am i going to argue about my version of science fictions better than yours, or your version of science fiction is the best or whether I have a hideously narrow straight jacketed…[Read more]

@nerys So much misdirection in this episode.
Yes, that was crucial last week too, and the Doctor even discussed it. On the other hand, we finally got into the Vault and there was no surprise at all that Missy was in there, and she does appear to be alone.
@wolfweed We learnt nothing about the Monks really.
Including the point of their inv…[Read more]

I agree with you on the subject of Donna. Of all the AG companions so far, she was the one I most warmed to, with Rory and Amy coming second (in no particular order). On present form, though, I think even she may be superseded by Bill, who displays a delightful combination of earthy practicality and wonder, and probably has the…[Read more]

Re the cataract surgery: I had problems with dry eye syndrome after the first eye was done – as you say, it felt sometimes as if I had grit in the eye, but on the advice of my local pharmacist I used hypromelose drops, which were very effective in alleviating the problem. With the second, right eye, there have been fewer after effects,…[Read more]

@bluesqueakpip: And the word *Doona* here for Duvet.
@jimthefish: Ah, well I haven’t seen the *after show* so thank you for that. I do mind though, so funny.
@mudlark: It’s definitely made my vision more sharp, but unfortunately, although the left eye was done in February, I still feel as if there is sleep in it and I need to wear dark glasses…[Read more]

@nerys You should listen to the audio stories starring Paul McGann, there is even a set with Alex as River.
I like an older Doctor personally. He would rock the part.

Certainly s3 of Broadchurch is a vast step away from the idiocy of s2 and back in the direction of relative quality but I still felt there were points where dramatic logic was replaced with the dramatic equivalent of loud and self-conscious whistling. Julie Hesmondaigh was consistently amazing though. Haven’t watched the finale…[Read more]

I’m inclined it agree with @nerys re Broadchurch – S3 managed to avoid the plotting stupidities of S2 (although it would be nice is, just occasionally, crime story writers familiarised themselves with the Police & Criminal Evidence Act). But I did quite like the rather contemplative ending tonight.

@nerys @redlemons I never cared much to re-watching DW — until the Moffat/Capaldi team took over. That was the point at which I began suggesting to the people who were uncomfortable with or unable to connect with or understand S8-9 that they wait a bit, and then watch again. That stuff was layered as fine cake (dark; probably bittersweet cho…[Read more]
