@arbutus @winston (and anyone else in the Canada contingent)

A sentence that:

a) I never thought I would write;

and

b) That I doubt anyone else here would ever expect me to write either.

But the new CBC/ Netflix adaptation of Anne of Green Gables is an absolute corker.

The open credits alone are a work of art.

Get the magnifying glass (or use the accessibility settings on your computer). You won’t regret it.

The Poke, bless its little cotton socks, did a fine job of rounding up the #BritishThreatLevels hashtag. Even Louise Mensch managed to be quite funny. Go figure. (One not on that list which I just spotted “We only have UHT milk”)

This is bizarre.

Maybe it is because my old neighbours are a Bangladeshi family who, on formal and celebration days wear the most spectacular and brilliantly vibrant colours that led my first impression to be that the monks were very much Asian-inspired.

My first thought on seeing the monk, walking towards the Doctor bak-lit by…[Read more]

I’ve never been too bothered with Moffat’s (and his writers’) leg pulls. I have no more problem with a bit of hand-wavy oblique reference to Pope Joan (anachronistic art style or not) than with the tendency to chuck the word “quantum” about with gay abandon (or, for that matter, straight abandon and gender-non-binary…[Read more]

That is a stunner.

As a little salve on a truly vile couple of days, I truly lovely story about the late, great Roger Moore.

@steffstaff

I think you have to allow for the Moffat Gleeful Imprecision Factor (and the dates are right….-ish).

I recall a scene from a Tom Baker(?) episode where he airily decreed that King John could have crushed  the barons at any time had he wanted. Almost certainly not the case, but a fun historical leg pull.

@steffstaff

You may find it instructive to Google the (probably apocryphal) Pope Joan…

@morpho

Eh?

When was the Pope bashed? Church was simply placed at the opposite end if a spectrum to CERN, and both were presented as knowing something bad was happening.

The picture on the wall should really be Liv Ullman or Johanna Wokalek, since they both played Pope Joan in films of the same name.

@Whisht

*cough*

@Thane15

Just to be clear I was using “sprite” in the computer animation sense. Anything that moves and does stuff is a sprite, be is Mario, Messi in FIFA17, Zombies in Half Life 2, spaceships in Elite or orcs, elves and wotnot in World of Warcraft. “Those things you shoot in video games”.

@mirime

Why did the book exist? Where did it come from? Was it a bug in the programming or deliberately placed?

It is a checksum. If too many sprites start suiciding, then it will alert the aliens that the sim his found the upper decile of human intelligence and insight.

What exactly was Missy being executed for?

Being Missy.

Why did the Doctor…

@RorySmith

So far you have presented no evidence to support that assertion.

So Pope Benedict the whateverth was Angeline Jolie, then?

@missy @ichabod

That blue item has been mentioned already in the BBC Spoilers thread, where it belongs.

@thane15

Hallelujah, indeed!

Since I mention it en passant in the Oxygen thread, have one of the great songs of the 80s

@MissRori

Wouldn’t a single death be an acceptable loss if the fate of the Earth is at stake due to that prisoner?

No. We’ve had this conversation – one does not do the right thing because it is part of a calculation, one does the right thing because it is the right thing.

And you go on adventures with companions/assistants/sidekicks because t…[Read more]
