Greetings all. It has been very quiet here of late. I hope everyone is well and surviving the extremes of the season, be that hot or cold.

We are sitting in front of the fresh breeze from the air conditioner, working on our respective tasks. I am supposed to be editing podcasts but seeking an excuse to procrastinate. I have only one snipped of news, of a sort. In the third series of Staged there is a small Tardis in David Tennant’s garden. (no doubt there as a prop)

Hi @timelordwizard. I started watching Dr Who when my brother, on a uni break was watching The Terror of the Zygons and so Tom Baker is my favourite Doctor too.

@craig, @everybody else in this wonderful little community, Best wishes for Christmas, Yuletide, Winter Solstice, Summer solstice, etc etc. Have a lovely festive season and all the best for 2023. May the planet stop baking, our world leaders come to their senses, may there be peace for Ukraine, and our researchers crack the Covid nasal vaccine and most importantly of all, may Dr Who return to our screens and be wonderful.

@winston. I hope you don’t loose power and that your sons are able to spend Christmas with you.

@dentarthurdent Have a lovely time with family.

@nerys and @thane16 I just watched the trailer for The Amazing Maurice which I am looking forward to having enjoyed the book by Pratchett. Maurice is voiced by Hugh Laurie. David Tennant also voices a character. (one of the rats) so this post isn’t entirely off topic.  🙂

@thane16 Ooh Christmas viewing line up. I just copied a few onto my laptop for the next few days, have just watched the Christmas episode of Goodnight Sweetheart, have the Christmas specials of Upstart Crow, and Hogfather on the list and one of the old BBC versions of A Christmas Carol. then the Dr Who Christmas Specials but hopefully will be watching those with the S/O at night.

Staged is a delight isn’t it. Can’t help but love everyone involved.

@thane16 Hi. Hope the weather is being nice to you up in Brisbane. WE are finally getting some warm, spring weather and the jacarandas are in full bloom. My favourite time of year.

and @winston I liked AVenue5 too. Some of the humour was too ott for my taste but overall I enjoyed it and will certainly watch the next series. As Winston says we all need a little escapism and I like mine to be tinged with acute social commentary which is a given in anything penned by Armando Iannucci. there is also another series of Staged out now. I have yet to watch it but that is something to look forward to. David Tenant and Michael Sheen playing exaggerated versions of themselves!! And I just found out that there is going to be a Detectorists Christmas Special so lots of good viewing to look forward to and compensate for the lack of a Dr Who Christmas Special

On Who related news I have posted a podcast about the Tom Baker story, City of Death on the Cult TV Club thread. Hopefully this link works. (and does not take people to the wrong page.) We have fallen behind with our podcasts recently due to a combination of covid, holidays and just general stuff. Hopefully next year will be back to schedule.

@nerys and @winston I watched series 1 of Avenue 5 and found it to be hit and miss, but I still enjoyed it and look forward to watching series 2 (which has just come out, I don’t know on what platform) I have not heard of the Australian series either. (much to my shame.) Will look for it.

We have yet to watch series 2 of Picard. A couple of months ago the s/o suggested a re watch of B.5 one night when I was feeling really burnt out and it was just what I needed at the time but of course we were not able to stop at one episode so are now working through series 4 while the list of shows we have to watch keeps growing. Have not had much time for tv watching in the last month. Likewise I have not yet started on my seasonal tv viewing. The last month has been incredibly busy for me, (hence my lack of comments here) culminating in a quiz night last night, which went well despite some organisational hiccups. (we were unable to get into the venue to complete set up and the person with the pass code arrived later than promised so there was a bit of chaos to begin with but our quiz masters are wonderful and made it fun for everyone.)

    @rewvian @dentarthurdent and @winston

Like Winston this is an episode  that I frequently re-watch. It is one part whimsy and one part horror but the latter is subtle and it features a cat.

I do like the reminder that the Doctor is not human. He/she appears human and at times it is easy to forget that the Doctor is alien. Seeing the Doctor not quite “getting” how to live as a human is delightful.

Like @rewvian I had not heard of James Corden until this episode so had no prior bias for or against, similarly with Katherine Tate which was advantageous. Likewise had I witnessed Bradley Walsh doing his game show routine at the Laundromat then I might have been more biased against his character as well.  (our washing machine is currently out of order and every time we go to the laundromat whatever game show it is that he hosts is up on screen. Definitely too much Bradley Walsh for my taste.)

@rewvian. I really enjoy the first half of this episode but the giant stompy cyber-king destroying half of London loses me. Why isn’t that mentioned in the history books. Why does nobody remember it? Jackson and Rosita are good though her costume is jarringly wrong too from a historical perspective.

@dentarthurdent and @rewvian My daughter in law (to be) watched the episodes with River Song and The Doctor in order of her meetings with him, but I don’t know if she actually did that by simply watching them in reverse order or worked out the actual order. I suspect one would need to peek into that blue box diary to do that correctly.

If the Big Finish productions and books are taken into account then there are more meetings than are shown in the tv series which scramble the order of meetings even more. Some of the meetings referred to (Jim the Fish for example) never make it to screen. (I think there may be a Big Finish or novelisation featuring “Jim”)

@dentarthurdent. Did you watch Babylon five? It is certainly divisive. A lot of people just didn’t warm to it but those who got through season one or skipped season one and started watching season two, (like me) are devoted fans. It has plenty of humour too, great characters, now antique CGI some very wobbly scipts and acting but once it gets into its stride with a fantastic arc it is great. We are currently rewatching. We tend to alternate, B.5, Dr Who.

@krathoon I never got through Remembrance of the Daleks. I do enjoy the later seventh Doctor stories and am looking forward to seeing Ace again. Such a fun companion though I have reservations about Chibnell’s story telling.

@rewvian  I don’t think they could ever have afforded Kylie as a permanent companion but as a guest star she certainly pushed the ratings. For a long time at least this episode had the highest viewer ratings, at least in the UK where she was very popular. Now Lynda with a Y would have been an excellent companion and that was early days in her acting career. Dr Who has a knack for getting actors just starting out who go on the bigger though not necessarily better things. Carey Mulligan being a shining example.

@rewvian I just wasn’t overly keen on the Sontaran two parter, though was good to meet up with Martha and Wilf again. Both Doctor’s Daughter and Unicorn and the Wasp are light weight, enjoyable episodes. I found the later to be very reminiscent of the Davison story, Black Orchid which also taps into a literary tradition, is set in a country house and has that “comedy of manners” feel.

It was a nice touch to cast Georgia Tennant as Jenny given her heritage, and led of course to that wedding speech like no other.  I am sure it is mentioned elsewhere on this site, (because otherwise I would not know this) but apparently it was Moffat who said that Jenny should be kept alive. He felt that she was a narrative resource that should not be simply discarded, ie killed off. A future writer could well bring back Jenny whether as played by Georgia Tennant or in a new regeneration. (Moffat keeping story elements that future writers might want to utilise to enrich the canon. Now who does that not sound like?)

I am glad that you have reviewed this @rewvian as looking back at my previous comment it is more than time that I amended that. A couple of years ago I included Voyage of the Damned in my annual Christmas rewatch and realised that it is far better than I thought. It has a lot of lovely moments, which you have covered a lot of filler action scenes but that is “par for the course” .  So in fact I would retract anything I said previously about this episode.

And I love the alternative as seen in Turn Left though the impact is considerably modified, ie from destroy the entire plant to nuke London.  (the “plant destroying” threat is overdone in Dr Who to the point where it becomes a bit meaningless.)

@dentarthurdent it is an artifact of this website, when threads get to long they tend to jump back to page one. IT has confused me many a time. Always fun to read back over old comments though.

We have had a really cold, wet winter which has dragged into spring. This is unusual weather for SA. humid and wet though thankfully we tend to be on the edge of the rain depressions so don’t get the extremes that the eastern states are suffering. It is just too dismal for holidays or picnics and we are getting a little grumpy because we have not got away now for almost a year.

@thane16 Lovely to hear from you, (both) Big waves from way down south, (and quite a big west) Hope you are not being flooded. The east coast is really suffering. We are just getting moderate rain, which is very welcome, though the farmers will start complaining if it doesn’t dry up soon in time for harvest.

@winston the idea of a winter where one stays inside keeping warm and doing indoor things sounds lovely. Winter here is when the garden requires most attention, weeding, pruning, preparing for spring planting. Unfortunately these days my gardening time is most taken up with editing a gardening podcast. I am learning about all the things which I should be doing but don’t have time to do.

@blenkinsopthebrave Thank you for the link. As trailers go it is not bad but what strikes me is that Yaz captures my attention, the Master is entertaining, but Sacha Dhawan; I would expect no less only I still think he would be great as the Doctor), it is exciting to see old favourites, Ace and Kate Lethbridge-Stewart again but the Doctor is not really there. I just wish this was being scripted by RTD and not Chibnell.

In the end I don’t mind if it isn’t wonderful, I will watch because I love Dr Who and it is not terrible. It has never been that bad that it is not watchable but what I really cannot accept is when the artifact that is Dr Who is being stomped on which is what I feel was done in the later second and third series, not with the Timeless Child story which had some potential though I don’t think it was well though through and went against the grain of fifty years of lore rather than adding to it, which it could well have done with a little more dexterity in scripting and some degree of respect for previous lore. Jo Martin’s Doctor for instance would not have had a police box shaped Tardis. “Details, details” but details add up and too many inconsistencies impact the integrity of the whole.

And I’m ranting again. Apologies. Fingers crossed the finale will be good, and does, give J.W. a chance to shine. She really deserves it.

@dentarthurdent. I appreciated your review, in part because it has saved me from watching the episode. I get to know what happens and that is enough. (The same reason I followed the episode reviews of GoT. Saved me watching it but I was interested enough to enjoy following the story.)

I do feel that Graeme ended up becoming bit of a liability story wise. I felt that he was detracting from the Doctor’s authority, playing the knowing older male stereotype. I think ti would have been better to have left him back on earth to be an occasional character.  Ryan as a character was inconsistent due do the writing.

I don’t think Chibnell would be able to write a “Christmassy” episode.

@mudlark and @dentharturdent (excellent avatar btw) Agree with both posts. I do get irritated by MOffat’s use of the psychopath label when applied to River Song as she is not a psychopath though at times that aspect of her character is inconsistent but that is a different, and minor niggle. Moffat created some memorable female characters who were strong and able to hold their own against the Doctor. NO mean feat. Also his characters never overshadowed the Doctor.

I too love the puzzle box nature of Moffat’s scripts which is why I am always checking to see what he is doing next.

Mudlark I too have tried to remain positive about the more recent series but now it is almost over I am analysing why it failed to engage me in the way that previous series did. It tried to be Doctor Who but something was always missing, an ingredient that I find hard to define.  A friend recently described some tv series as being “like a hug”. These are the series that we go back to time and time again, watching and rewatching, because not only do they entertain and stimulate but they have that “hug” quality. that for me is Dr Who, RTD did capture that quality but it was under Moffat’s tenure that it really shone for me. Chibnell’s tenure could entertain but it rarely stimulated any real analysis and was entirely lacking in the “hug” quality. There are only three or four episodes that really stand out in memory for me.

@blenkinsopthebrave. It says something about the age we live in where the term, “cleverness” is a criticism and not a compliment. I think that both MIller and Moffat are justified in being annoyed by that.

I hope that RTD will convince Moffat to write another episode or two. Maybe a Christmas Special. I do miss the Christmas Specials.

@nerys and Merlin in Merlin, though  that show was so a travesty that maybe that role is best forgotten.  I loved Belfast too. I think it was a good approach to showing the troubles, the horror is distilled through the eyes of the child. I have a friend who grew up in Belfast during that period. Having heard some of her stories, made this film even more poignant for me. I have not had a chance to catch up with her since watching it and see what she thought of it.

The warmth of the film, the sense of community rang true for me too. I hitched to Belfast in April 1984. I had arranged to meet up with my friends outside Tourist Information but they were late and I was sitting alone on the street, for hours. So many people stopped to ask if I was ok yet in the background the streets were barricaded and military patrolled, guns poised. I was struck by the juxtaposition of simmering violence and simple human warmth. Also Northern Ireland was a hitchhiker’s dream, no problem getting lifts and they were all friendly, helpful and kind.

And because this is The Sofa random Dr Who reference, the friend from Northern Ireland is a Dr Who fan who hosted a podcast discussing sci fi. She also once had to pick up Colin Baker from the airport and drive him to the Convention centre and spoke very highly of him.

    @dentarthurdent A belated Happy Birthday.

Re feeling old when others of like age pass away, that happens at all ages sadly. I caught up with the “old crowd” from work on Sunday. It is 27 years since I left that workplace and probably about ten years since last seeing most of them. Surprisingly few have changed much but several other people who worked with us have now passed away which is very sobering, and it felt weird and wrong to hear everyone discussing retirement. To me they are still “young” as they were when we worked together. Oh and just to keep this on topic, Dr Who was mentioned as was Red Dwarf. In fact it was a couple of my work friends who introduced me to the later series.

@dentarthurdent and @blenkinsopthebrave I do love the Fiveish Doctor’s reboot. It is truly a gem, reflecting a remarkable degree of good will between all involved. It is one of those things that I will watch when I need a ‘pick me up”. It changed my attitude to Colin Baker, though I still don’t like him as the Doctor and really raised Peter Davison in my estimation.

There was talk at one time of Peter Jackson making a Dr Who film. I suspect that he and Moffat discussed it, especially as they are clearly still friends. There was a YouTube clip a few years back of Capaldi delivering a note to P.J, from Moffat. Sadly nothing came of it.

Re Ian McKellen apparently he was talking with Patrick Steward on a talk show at some time and they were discussing Dr Who. Sir Ian voiced the Great Intelligence so he has had a role in Dr Who but Sir Patrick has not yet been in Dr Who and apparently he feels quite left out. so lets hope that RTD notices and gives Patrick Stewart a guest role in the next series…

@dentarthurdent. Another excellent review and it reminds me of all the  things I disliked about this episode and why I have not watched the subsequent episodes which makes me sad. I want to keep watching but just cannot and it is because this episode for me was destructive of the series itself.  MOffat and RTD made changes to the lore but they did with with a scalpel not a bulldozer.  Somehow this series left me feeling that Chibnell hates the series and wants to make it into something else. There were good ideas but they were delivered badly and the feel was off too. One of the features that has always made Dr Who so lovable is charm right from 1963, (with the exception of the Colin Baker years) but this series totally lacks charm. (that was also one of the reasons that the Canadian film failed

I am afraid that this episode lost me as a viewer. Hopefully RTD will ignore a lot of Chibbers’ canon bashing and restore Gallifrey yet again.. After all it is strongly implied in the last Moffat series that Gallifrey lasts until the end of time itself.

@blenkinsopthebrave I missed this the other day. I do like Ian. I wish that he would get a “cameo” in a new episode. The 60th anniversary special would do nicely.  I started writing a Christmas story involving Ian and his “grandson”, played by Alfred Enoch. (assuming Ian does marry Barbara he would have to be a grandson not son) a couple of years ago but haven’t finished it. It features J.W. as the Doctor I had better get a move on with it.

Our “daughter in law to be” is currently doing script writing at Uni and as part of her course watched The Pandorica Opens the other day. Her lecturer is a big fan. He wrote a short story for one of the Dr Who short story compilations a few years back. He is also a B.5 fan and I believe they discussed that too. Uni has changed a lot since my day when Sci-fi was frowned upon, tv considered too degenerate to be an art form and creative writing not considered fit to be a subject. They are both lucky now and unlucky.

It would be nice to have threads for all the older episodes, maybe as a series rather than the individual episodes. I think we all like to comment on an episode after watching it (or enjoy others reviews and comments) and is always good to revisit the older stories as well as the newer ones. We watched through the Pertwee stories last year as we are involved in a podcast about “classic Cult Tv” We chose The Deamons as it has both UNIT and The Master which are iconic to the Pertwee years but rarely appear together.

Sympathy to our Brits fans who are suffering at the moment and to to any Europeans who are affected by the fires. It is very frightening to see news stories of “wildfires” in Europe. @blenkinsopthebrave Lots of lovely photos and four stars! That is praise indeed from the Guardian. (better than Marvel movie then.) Although there were some factual errors in one of the articles. (do not recall which but it irritated me.) They implied that the Doctor was not stated to be an alien until 1969 which is incorrect. It is clear in An Unearthly Child that the Doctor and Susan are not from earth though it does not state where they are from. The concept of regeneration dates to 1969. That kind of sloppy research irritates me and it is the second incidence of it I have encountered this week in the Guardian. (both I should note, really trivial details. I am becoming pedantic of late.)

@dentarthurdent I fear that Farscape is also on our “to watch” list for Cult Tv Club for this year but I am not sure that the S/O can cope with more Muppets. We have done Muppet Show and Fraggle Rock so far this year and Labyrinth last year. Feeling a bit Muppeted out, especially as I was never a Muppet fan.

I have never watched Battlestar Galactica but we have the board game and that involves uncovering which player is the Cylon. I got one Cylon card and was outed at once. I’m never playing poker. The youngest son got the other and nobody suspected him at all.  (It is also on the CCtvC to watch list)

@dentarthurdent I have never been a fan of Westerns though I enjoyed the occasional spaghetti western when I was studying film but I do have very fond memories of watching old Westerns with my Uncle many years ago. We were both in stiches. He loved Westerns but also enjoyed the silliness inherent within them.

I think that is why I never warmed to Firefly. We might be watching it later this year for the podcast series so maybe I will change my mind then about it.

@winston. The digital age has its benefits and its massive negatives. I love the research opportunities it opens up, having resources available to me always that once could only be accessed through libraries and select libraries at that. Being able to attend classes and tutorials from their bedrooms during the pandemic has been fabulous but they are not getting the human interaction that was such an essential part of the University experience. There are wonderful corners of the internet like this one but there are some truly dark places too. They do seem to be very adept at navigating that though. Generally I have great hope for this generation. In the most recent Australian election the younger generation tended to vote, green, left or independent. (the “teals”) which I consider to be a good sign.

ps and because this is the Sofa must mention Dr Who. Just over a month ago, before the first Covid strike on the household we did a podcast on the first episode with Tom Baker. I forgot to post the link so will do that.

@winston congratulations (now belated) on your granddaughter. I agree that the young generation are showing a lot of promise. They are growing up in a very different world, in some ways much more enlightened but also prone to frightening extremes.

@dentarthurdent When it comes to Christmas my partner and I buy our own presents and hand them over to be wrapped and put under the tree. I am already collecting books for my Christmas Present.

@dentarthurdent the overall philosophy of the Chibnell era seems to be, “show and tell and tell again, and again, just in case they missed the message the first second and third times. The problem with that is no matter how much you agree with the message being hit over the head with it, over and over, makes anyone want to disagree. Praxeus could be a good story. I liked the concept but it fails in delivery.

@devilishrobby Apologies for the error. I did not know they were made at Elstree. I lived just down the road for a few months, at Stirling Corner. Some of the “regulars” at the Pub had worked all their lives in the studios there.

@dentarthurdent. That is the one. The Canadian movie was not good. It doesn’t have the feel of Dr Who. McGann was excellent though.

@brewski and @dentarthurdent The Dr Who movies are British. IT was a thing the Brits did back then, make movies of popular tv series, usually just an extended episode. They were cheap to make and I guess had a guaranteed audience. I don’t think Kate’s comment was a reference to the Dr Who movies, nice though that would be, but to Hollywood movies which notoriously re write history. The Brits have not forgiven Hollywood for U-571
