@janetteb I actually like Peri. I recently did a list of my top 10 favorite companions. Peri made number 9. But difference, I can respect that.

@michjarv Pearl said she was leaving the show after series 10 was done. She’s technically already made her exit in the finale. But she is coming back in the Christmas special.

@missy and @janetteb If you got into Doctor Who through the new series, then I suggest the Six and Evelyn story, “Jubilee.” When Russell T. Davies started New Who, he recruited Jubilee’s writer Robert Shearman. Shearman changed and adapted Jubilee into the episode “Dalek.”

The premise is the same: the Doctor finds himself in the presence of a madman in a position of power and learns he has acquired the last Dalek in existence. However, aside from that base premise, the two stories are VASTLY different

@missy Well you can get a lot of Big Finish’s early stuff for cheap. They discontinued the CDs and only sell them as downloads.

My tip would be to sign up and get a Big Finish account (it’s free), and then get the Big Finish app and sync it to your account. Then, whatever you buy as a download, you can download it to your phone or other device for listening.

Now, onto the companion. Portrayed by the late Maggie Stables, Dr. Evelyn Smythe is a 55 year old College history professor. She makes her debut in the audio, “The Marian Conspiracy,” where the Doctor is investigating a nexus point linked to her history. After the matter is resolved, she continued to travel with the Doctor, making way for some of the Sixth Doctor’s best stories, including my current favorite, “Jubilee.”

Even though he’s often considered the worst incarnation of the Doctor because of the stories he had during his 2 season run, a lot of fans agree that the Sixth Doctor was redeemed on Big Finish. I personally think Evelyn played a huge role in that as well.

On top of that, Colin Baker and Maggie Stables played off each other so well. I really love the dynamic between the Doctor and Evelyn. Like the Second Doctor and Jamie, or the Tenth Doctor and Donna, the Sixth Doctor and Evelyn are best friends.

I’ve done a lot of thinking about this subject. Who is my favorite companion? It’s actually a companion from the audios.

@wolfweed So if I read that right, they’re doing “Shada” the same way they did the Second Doctor’s “Power of the Daleks” almost?

I’m actually mixed on this. I’m glad it’s going to be finished. And I’ll definitely check it out and add it to my collection. But, at the same time, I have Big Finish’s version, with the Eighth Doctor. And I really like that one.

Thank you everyone for your input. It’s been super helpful. My Fourth Doctor cosplay is almost done. I’m just waiting on my shoes to arrive and then I’ll post some pics. But I have another issue. With the Fourth Doctor, I’m planning to cosplay as the Twelfth Doctor as well. I’ll re-use the coat from my Fourth Doctor cosplay and use the Twelfth Doctor’s red coat look. I have all the pieces except one… the shoes.

The Doctor wears black brogue boots (pictured)

Now here’s the problem. I’m a men’s 15 wide (in US sizing). I’ve looked EVERYWHERE and this style of boot DOES NOT EXIST in my size.

So here’s my question. Do I get brogue shoes (not boots) which do exist in my size for visual similarity? Or do I get black boots for a stylistic similarity?

Hello again everyone. I’m still working on my Fourth Doctor cosplay (which I commented about earlier in the thread). I find myself in need of your guys’ help again.

I’m going for one of the Fourth’s frock coat looks. Mainly the burgundy velvet frock coat (that he wore in such stories as Pyramids of Mars, The Masque of Mandragora, the beginning of The Deadly Assassin, and so on) pictured below:

Now, buying an actual recreation of the coat would be too expensive for me right now, so I actually just went and bought a red blazer. Here’s the reference pics from the website I bought it from:

Now here’s where I need the fan base’s help. In terms of color and length, I noticed that the blazer more closely resembles Four’s corduroy coat pictured below (and was worn in such adventures as Robot, Genesis of the Daleks, The Sontaran Experiement, etc):

I noticed that the corduroy coat has elbow patches. Do you guys think this is something my coat would need? I know it’s such a small detail, but the small details are really what gets me.

PS once I’m done, I’ll of course post a picture for you guys.

(Also, with all these questions and concerns I’ve been having, I’m really glad I abandoned my original idea of cosplaying the Sixth Doctor)

One of the things I want to talk about is the ending. After watching “The Doctor Falls,” I watched it on a lot of reaction channels. The scene right before the First Doctor shows up.

“I will NOT CHANGE!”

Am I just interpreting this scene wrong? Everyone is saying “he’s trying not to regenerate. He’s trying to stay as he is.” But I don’t think that’s the case. Before he leaves the TARDIS, he talks about how tired he is. How he doesn’t want to do the cycle anymore: be lost, find out who he is, regenerate, start over.

To me, in that scene, the Doctor is trying to not regenerate, yes. But he’s not trying to stay the Twelfth Doctor. He’s trying to die.

Throughout time, Doctor Who had created many pieces of memorabilia that fans want. Everything from the Fourth Doctor’s scarf to the Seventh Doctor’s umbrella. Well, for me, after this season, there’s another piece I’d like to add to my list:

Missy’s sonic umbrella.

I was just thinking about something. Since the Master is SUPPOSEDLY dead for good this time (“Don’t bother regenerating, you got the full blast.”) (and I stress “supposedly,” because it’s the Master, so who knows), I’d like to see Chibnall bring back some of the other Time Lord villains. Since the new series began, it’s always been either the Master or Rassilon. But there’s so many other great Time Lord villains. The Rani, the Mad Monk, Omega, the War Cheif. Heck, since we’re on the Twelfth regeneration (until Christmas), I’d even like to see the Valeyard come back– since he is the combination of all the Doctor’s darker sides, existing somewhere between the Doctor’s Twelfth and final regenerations.

Oh that’s a shame. It’s just a personal style preference for me. I love long coats you see. It’s one of the reasons why I’m not considering the red corduroy coat.

I was just listening to “The Diary of River Song.” In the third story, “Signs,” River goes on an adventure with a man pretending to be the Doctor. I really liked the performance in that story, and I kinda want Samuel West (the actor who played “Mr. Song” in signs) to play the Doctor. That’s just my personal want. I’m sure however it is will be great though.

I need some help. I’ve decided I want to start cosplaying. For my first foray into Cosplay, I’m going with the Fourth Doctor. Since I’m new to this, I’m not making anything, I’m just getting pieces together for the ensemble. Right now, I’m having trouble with the coat. While not as iconic as his scarf, the Fourth Doctor wore many memorable coats. I just need help deciding which one would be best.

The images come from cosplaysky. I’m not gonna buy from there, they’re just good reference pics.

Dark red corduroy trench coat

Long brown trench coat

Plum red trench coat

Of the three, the plum red trench coat is my favorite, but I’m not sure. While I’m not going for 100% accurate, I would like to be as accurate as possible and I don’t think he ever wore that coat with his first scarf (the multi-colored one). I know the Fourth Doctor wore it towards the end of his life with the second scarf (the red one)

When it comes to my favorite Doctor, that’s really hard to decide. I like all the actors who’ve played the Doctor (yes, some more than others, but I’ve never not liked an actor in the role… the material some of the Doctors have to work with on the other hand…). So, I like to break it down and say I have 4 favorites:

*My favorite classic Doctor is the Third.

*My favorite new Doctor is the Twelfth.

*My favorite Big Finish Doctor is (currently) a tie between the Fifth and the Sixth

Hello. I’m looking for some recommendations. You see, in a couple months, I’m going on a long-distance flight. To pass the time, I’m looking into the Doctor Who audio dramas by Big Finish. I already have “Shada,” and I’m about to acquire “The Diary of River Song,” and I was looking for some other recommendations.

Preferences:

*The Eighth Doctor

*River Song

*The Twelfth Doctor (though, I imagine, there isn’t too many of those yet)

*The Third Doctor

@nightfell Oh I hope not. Back when I had DirecTV, watching Doctor Who wasn’t an issue, I could DVR it and catch up whenever I wanted. But, between series eight and nine, I switched over to Charter, and on the basic package, Charter doesn’t get BBC

McCotton @replies

@NightFell I wouldn’t worry too much about it (I’m American too by the way). When I saw it was being removed, I looked into it. Netflix is– please forgive me if I phrase this wrong– under a yearly contract with the BBC to show Doctor Who. All that means is that the contract is almost up and Netflix just has to renew it, which it most likely will.

I was marathoning Doctor Who recently. Given that he’s a time traveler, I like to marathon the episodes out of order (except for the ones that need to be watched chronologically, like the classic serials or Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead to name two examples), and I started thinking as I watched:

The relationship between the 10th Doctor and Donna, to me, really echoes the relationship between the 3rd Doctor and Jo. Their chemistry, the banter, all of it.

What do you guys think? Agree? Disagree?

@ob-wan I can’t help you with complete collections. But I do have a few sources you can try.

Netflix has “Classic Doctor Who” (that’s what it’s credited as). It has some complete serials for a few of the Doctors. It has 1 story arc (or serials) each for the 1st and 2nd doctors. It has 3 or 4 for the 3rd Doctor (including “The Three Doctors,” which is my favorite of the multi Doctor stories). I has a lot for the 4th (it has like 2 or 3, and then it has an entire season; the Key of Time story arc) and then it has one for the 5th, and one for the 7th.

Or even the consciousness that is “The Moment” I would kind of (and that’s on a very loose technicality) consider that the War Doctor’s companion.

McCotton @replies

@ob-wan I guess than, I’m just more general than most people. When I think of “companion,” I tend to think of anyone who’s traveled with the Doctor, in the TARDIS in any capacity. You mentioned the Brigadier traveled with the 2nd in the Five Doctors. He also traveled through the Black Hole in The Three Doctors.

Well, a little more general than that actually. Like I consider all the one-off “partners” (I don’t think there was much TARDIS travel) that the 10th cooperated with after Donna left (in Tennant’s final series) as companions.

McCotton @replies

@doctordani That’s how it is for me. I’m not gonna fight anyone on their opinion. I’m just saying I personally consider River and the Brigadier companions. But that’s just my opinion. If you disagree, I’m alright with that.

McCotton @replies

@ob-wan I don’t think it’s exactly like that. I think, because they’re married, it’s more of a status thing. Like, and this makes River sound kind of pompous and snobbish and I’m really not trying to do that, she considers herself above his companions because they’re married.

#50308
McCotton @replies

@doctordani I believe that one of the producers from the classic series called the Brigadier a companion and that was how the debate started.

@missy Yeah. Out of curiosity, mostly because there seems to be ongoing debates about it, would you consider the Brigadier and River companions?

McCotton @replies

A thread about the companions. Well, let me start off with my opinion:

Favorite companion: Actually that’s tough. Right now, the best I can do is a five-way tie (because I can’t decide how to rank them) between Jo, Donna, Ace, Ian, and Lethbridge-Stewart (and yes, in that particular debate, I am in the group that considers the Brigadier a companion)

Least favorite: Mel

I’ve been interested in the Eighth Doctor lately and I want to check out the Big Finish audio dramas. I recently bought “Shada” and thoroughly enjoyed it. I want to check out more of them. Does anyone have a good starting point?

P.S. In Doctor Who in general, I like Dalek stories.

McCotton @replies

@sirclockface It’s hard to say. I didn’t really time it, I just listened and experienced it. If it helps at all, “Shada” was done in six parts on two CDs.

McCotton @replies

@sirclockface I just finished “Shada.” It’s really good. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Along with the Eighth Doctor, Shada brought back Romana (Romana II if you want to be technical) and K-9. If this is the kind of quality continues throughout the Big Finish audio drama, then I would highly recommend them. I can’t say for myself, because I’ve only listened to one.

Real quick, in this age of TV, it’s kind of hard to listen to them starting out. But as you listen and get used to them, they’re a lot of fun. You can actually visualize them as you listen.

McCotton @replies

@sirclockface I actually recently just bought “Shada.” I’ll let you know what I think of it when I finish it.

I’m looking forward to it personally. Based on the reviews I’ve read, of the three versions of the “Shada” story (the novelization, the finally released Tom Baker serial, and the Big Finish audio drama which has been updated and re-written to feature the Eighth Doctor rather than the Fourth Doctor), the Big Finish version is supposedly superior version.

But like I said, I’ll give you my opinion after I finish it.

Hello everyone. I’m new to the forum. Just real quick, I’m American. My favorite Doctor is the Third.

Anyway, I was wondering if I could get some opinions. Recently, I’ve been looking into expanding my Doctor Who DVD collection. I already have “The Doctors Revisited” specials. I was thinking of getting a couple more serials, but I wanted some opinions, just to see if what I’m interested in is worth buying:

*The Five Doctors- I’m actually very interested in this one. I’ve only seen two of the multi-Doctor specials (The Three Doctors, and Day of the Doctor), but I like them. But I’ve heard more mixed things about this one.

*The Deadly Assassin- I’ve heard good things about this one, but I’m not too sure. Honestly, I’m only mostly interested in it because of the Peter Pratt incarnation of the Master

*An Adventure in Space and Time – It’s not really an episode, but it’s still about Doctor Who. Plus, I’m interested to see David Bradley’s portrayal of Hartnell

#49605
McCotton @replies

@miapatrick Really? Because I read that Cushing based his performance off William Hartnell. So, I would have assumed he was an alternate reality version of the First

McCotton @replies

@winston It was actually really hard to pick a favorite. I like different Doctors for different reasons. But, some I like more than others. But don’t get met wrong, I like all the Doctors (… except Peter Cushing, but to my understanding, we don’t talk about him)

I’m a fairly new fan to Doctor Who (by the way, I am American just so you know). I’ve been into science fiction ever since I was very little, three or four. In my senior year of high school (2012), a lot of my friends started recommending I watch Doctor Who. I had heard about the show but I didn’t know that much about it…at the point. After doing some research into the show, I finally said, “we’re so far into this Doctor, I’ll come in on the next regeneration.” (Back in 2012, the Doctor was the Eleveth) Technically…I started in on “Day of the Doctor,” but Peter Capaldi was my first Doctor for the most part. After catching up on the series (as the entire series is available on Netflix), I really found that the Twelfth was my favorite of the new Doctors (the Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth). And, for a while, he was my favorite Doctor. Then, I discovered Classic Who on Netflix. While it doesn’t have all the episodes, I did watch a few story arcs for each Doctor (except the First and the Second, as I could only really find one or two). After watching both series, I have to say that the Third Doctor is my personal favorite. Actually, my rankings of the Doctor (from my favorite to my least favorite) are as follows:

1. the Third
2. the Twelfth
3. the Fourth
4. the Tenth
5. the War Doctor (yes, I do count the War Doctor. If you do, awesome. If you don’t, that’s alright too)
6. the Eighth
7. the Second
8. the Seventh
9. the Ninth
10. the First
11. the Eleventh
12. the Fifth
13. the Sixth
