@faegrl – ‘Trial of a Time Lord’ is the name of the entire season; it has four serials in it, that one is from ‘The Mysterious Planet’. Which is probably my favourite from that season… along with ‘The Ultimate Foe’ which is the finale serial. I only have a few more serials to go before I’ve watched all of the Sixth Doctor’s episodes. I really do like the Sixth Doctor, some don’t, but I think his egotistical nature is rather cute actually. lol! Besides, I find it interesting how there’s a reason for his slightly unpredictable personality; the regeneration wasn’t normal. Well that’s what I gathered from what the Fifth Doctor said before he regenerated “Feels different this time…”
Also I like that coat!

I usually check eBay as well for items, also somebody on etsy makes the question mark handle for the Seventh Doctor’s umbrella. Which will be very useful! Got to have the umbrella!

My random viewings of the serials does mean I miss continuity points sometimes though, but I did watch all of ‘Trial of a Time Lord’ in order… because that season came as one boxset on DVD! lol Oh have to mention… the first sequence in ‘The Mysterious Planet’ with the space station bringing the TARDIS in… is one of my favourite old effects in Doctor Who… I just love how its done! Brilliant!
Its just the first part of the video that’s the effect I’m talking about. I find it more impressive than some of the new effects!

And yes, the “dun, dun, dun!” music is awesome! I actually like a lot of the music in Classic Who… especially the radiophonics… some epic sounds right there!
You know a lot of folks seem to think the First Doctor is just grumpy and strict, but he has his moments of being silly, like all the other Doctors.
And thanks! Its probably going to take me a while to get all the items though! lol

@faegrl – Actually sometimes I wish I could watch more than one at a time, and sometimes its hard to choose which Doctor I want to watch a serial of. Anyhow you have a lot of good serials to watch, in fact you’ll probably watch some serials I haven’t yet due to your method of watching them. My method – completely random! lol!

Lets hope they make the Daleks seem more impressive again, the way the series has been using them recently is not the best. Its said Capaldi really likes the Daleks, so I’m guessing he’s quite happy he will be in an episode with them sooner rather than later.

The same style as the Seventh Doctor’s (not the easiest to find, its much easier to find a Panama like the Fifth’s it seems). It will be perfect for my cosplay… I just need to find something to use as the paisley hat band. But for now I guess I have to save up money for that question mark sweater and paisley scarf. I think I’m going to wear a number of these cosplay items normally too… I love the Seventh Doctor’s style.

And about this site… yes it is rather awesome! I’m on two Doctor Who forums… this one and Gallifrey Base (which is a really big forum). Here is a lot more relaxed, both are very different forums, but I like both of them. Though Gallifrey Base is where I have come across some vicious comments every so often. I picked both of these forums because they’re not just about the new series, I do like the new series… but I’m more of a fan of the old series.
17 February 2014 at 10:35 #25383@faegrl – When I first saw the scene I was like “what the heck is the Doctor doing…!?”, but in a way it really shows how ‘alien’ he is at first with how he acts. Oh and Ian and Barbara are awesome companions! In fact Ian is my favourite companion from Doctor Who. He and the Doctor later on make a great (but rather funny) team in a number of episodes. And Barbara is great because she can often take control of a situation when separated from the Doctor, which is nice to see in a 60s series. Of course there is the random screaming you get from female companions, but it was the times. lol! Though you still get random screaming in the 80s too… like Mel! (And for the record… I like Mel!)
And thanks! Its going to take me a while to get all the items I need, but I really want to make this cosplay. My sister is also thinking of making a femme Second Doctor cosplay… she already has similar hair to his. Good thing is she’s a bit taller than me, and the Second Doctor is a bit taller than the Seventh Doctor… so it makes sense!
17 February 2014 at 02:44 #25373@faegrl – Ah yes, the infamous rock scene. Just you wait till the next (rather short) serial after the Daleks. He acts very untrusting of Ian and Barbara. Its only after that does this TARDIS team start to work together properly (unfortunately the fourth serial is missing completely!). But you gradually start to notice him changing and becoming more caring. Really interesting hearing what you think of the serials/characters!
And yes I like all the Doctors in general, just some more than others. But I care about all of them because… they are the Doctor!
Oh and talking about the Seventh Doctor (again!), I did mention I was planning on making a cosplay. Well it happens to be a femme Seventh Doctor cosplay. I’m hoping to buy a Optimo Panama Hat pretty soon, and also the question mark sweater and paisley scarf on the BBC store for it. Going for his off-white coat outfit, rather than the brown coat. Once I make some progress with it, I might have to post about it in the Fan Creativity forum here.
16 February 2014 at 23:02 #25370@purofilion – Very interesting post! Ah yes, I have encountered some people who seem to dislike the Seventh and his serials quite a bit on another forum. Same goes for the Sixth as well. There are a few reasons as to why, but some seem quite vicious about it which makes me angry. I’m fine with the fact if its just not their cup of tea, everyone is entitled to their own opinion… but when its bashing just for the sake of it… I have to defend my Doctor.
The Seventh Doctor is slightly egocentric, but I actually like that. He’s very unusual… one of the most unusual Doctors there is, he often knows exactly what’s going on but doesn’t tell anybody. This in turn makes companions and the like quite angry with him, perhaps some fans too? But I love that mystery, he’s in control (most of the time), he’s clever and he knows it. But he doesn’t really brag about it, maybe some small quips every now and again, but if I recall the Tenth bragged a lot more! And he never managed anything as intricately planned out as the Seventh. The Seventh also just seems slightly untrustworthy; you never know what his plans are… and if he’s using you as a pawn. He’s just fascinating. My sister actually mentioned that she finds him unnerving sometimes (or words to that effect).
On the other hand… his first ‘persona’ is very different. I actually like both versions of him, I mean how can you not love him in ‘Time and the Rani’? He’s so cute. Playing the spoons! I do suggest perhaps watching a few more of his serials, some are just brilliant, but rather surreal.
Re: Quatermass: I actually haven’t got to watching it yet. Sorry about that! I hope to watch through the episodes posted in a few days or so. I think I’m going to like it though.
16 February 2014 at 19:26 #25365@arbutus – Oh I do love the portrayal of the Seventh Doctor in the movie as well, I just can’t handle watching the scenes leading to his regeneration very well… even thinking about it makes me sad. Because certain Doctors can become very important to you, its just awful watching regeneration scenes sometimes. I adore the Seventh Doctor. I wouldn’t know which one to travel with in the TARDIS if I had a choice of the First and Seventh. They’re both awesome, I’d like to travel with both of them.
About the Daleks; they’re my favourite Doctor Who alien/monster… but they’ve been overused recently, and also sidelined in the episodes which annoys me. By using them like that they’re taking away their effect. I however like the episode ‘Dalek’ with Eccleston, because it was just one Dalek… and that one Dalek seemed more threatening than a whole bunch of them in later episodes. Though… have to say I like the Cult of Skaro… and the sassy chat they have with the Cybermen.
Well the Second Doctor is cool, so his bowtie is cool… makes sense!

No other episode after it has managed to catch the atmosphere of the planet Skaro (and I have a lot of opinions on Skaro, in fact I don’t consider its appearance in ‘Asylum of the Daleks’ canon… but I can only explain about that if you don’t mind spoilers for the Seventh Doctor). How are you liking the radiophonics of the 60s episodes? Aren’t they awesome?
Any opinions on the First Doctor yet? You’re still in his very ‘strict authority figure’ episodes right now, I did forget to mention before that he can be very sneaky (like with the fluid link). But as you gradually watch through his serials you’ll find out he does become more of a grandfatherly, eccentric scientist type character. The First has some awesome moments, there’s this scene in ‘The War Machines’ where everyone else is backing off from the machines (even military types) and he just calmly walks right up to it.
I haven’t watched the episode of the Fourth’s regeneration in a long time, though I have more recently seen just the regeneration scene. Its pretty sad, I mean I do have to say I love the Fourth Doctor as well (who doesn’t!?). But my favourite regeneration scene (for how well it was done) is actually the Fifth Doctor’s… its so intense!
And indeed! A lot of people use the ‘my Doctor’ phrase, I just apply it to two Doctors as I love both the First and Seventh a lot.
@scaryb – Thanks! lol Have you watched all the missing serials then? Like… ‘The Daleks Master Plan’!? I really want them to find the rest of that one… especially the last episode.
And yep! I thought that, ‘The Web Planet’ does really feel like a alien world… I really liked the sets! Both ‘The Sensorites’ and ‘Web Planet’ tend to get bashed for being too slow… and yes they are a bit slow, but they’re not bad serials… they’re rather good!
16 February 2014 at 04:51 #25349@faegrl – Yes I tend to accidentally change the subject sometimes, but I’ve been called a ‘Topic Dalek’ on here before as I tend to notice when they go off course and try to do something about it! lol
Quite a few shows got junked back then unfortunately. Some amazing episodes are missing, of course there are ‘partly missing’ serials as well, where you can watch a few of the eps in a story… but not all of them. They will sometimes animate the episode though for DVDs, as all soundtracks for every episode exist still, thanks to fans in the 60s recording it off their TVs.
Yes… regeneration scenes often make me sad… but its the First and Seventh Doctor’s regenerations that get to me the most as they’re my favourites. Even though the episode is missing of First’s regeneration, the clip still exists (they’ve also animated it now too). And the Seventh’s… its not really the actual regeneration scene but the run up to it. My sister noticed how affected I was watching those scenes when we watched it.
I in general like all the Doctors anyhow (the the Eleventh should of kept his fez!) But yes, I’m a total ‘fangirl’ of the First Doctor and Seventh Doctor. I consider both of them ‘my Doctor’, its so odd… but you end up caring about your favourite Doctors so much, don’t you?
Oh and a mention to the Second Doctor too (who is actually my sister’s favourite), Troughton is a phenomenal actor… and he is just wonderful in the role of the Doctor. His serials are such a joy to watch. He also wore a bowtie before they were ‘cool’. lol!

Anyhow, in reply to your queries… yes… a number of First and Second Doctor episodes are missing (Hartnell and Troughton). Its due to the mass junkings of episodes in the 60s/70s. HOWEVER, its not all bad news… sometimes episodes are found! Because of reels they sold overseas. Most recently ‘Enemy of the World’ and ‘Web of Fear’ turned up, both brilliant Troughton serials. (I have yet to watch ‘Web of Fear’ though, waiting for the DVD!) Unfortunately a lot still remain missing. 🙁 ‘Enemy of the World’ is AMAZING though, Salamander is my favourite human villain from Doctor Who!
I hope you like the First, Second and Third Doctors. They really are amazing. And the Sixth and Seventh are brilliant! I know some don’t like their serials… but I love ’em! I especially love McCoy! The Eighth Doctor… well, his actual Doctor is really cool in my opinion. Its just the TV movie doesn’t really feel like Doctor Who. But… the Seventh Doctor is in it at the beginning… I… usually don’t like watching it too much though… I can hardly stand to watch the scenes leading up to his regeneration…
I’m not the biggest fan of the Tenth Doctor, but I like him enough. lol! I actually really like the Ninth Doctor, he’s my current favourite of New Who (might change with Capaldi!).
16 February 2014 at 04:02 #25345Because I’m in ‘fangirl’ mode for the Seventh Doctor at the moment, I want to talk a bit about him again (also I have been talking about this a bit in another thread but thought it would be better here)… though this is actually more of just a theory.
Now… the Seventh Doctor started off rather clownish and silly in his first season; but soon in the next two seasons became a very manipulative, darker character. Playing his enemies (and sometimes companions) off against one another like a game of chess. This Doctor had one of the most profound changes of character than any other; excluding the First Doctor here… who knows what he was like before Ian and Barbara… we only got a glimpse of that personality in those first few episodes.
I was wondering if there could be a canon reason to why the Seventh Doctor changed so much? Could it be he had a very long post-regenerative state? Or did it simply take a while before his proper personality settled in? If you compare his character from ‘Time and the Rani’ or ‘Dragonfire’ to it in ‘Curse of Fenric’, ‘Greatest Show in the Galaxy’, ‘Ghost Light’, ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’ and ‘Survival’ you can really tell he’s changed a lot. Fun and rather care-free to brooding and melancholy… very odd… but very interesting!

Well the fact I’m completely in love with the Seventh Doctor might account for something on why I liked it so much… but in general I thought it was a good serial. Not sure if I understand why some folks dislike it so much.

The serials are vastly different from the 60s, to the 70s to the 80s. It really depends on what kind of television you prefer. Obviously the 60s episodes are slower paced, but have some brilliant and imaginative storyline and ideas… not to mention great atmosphere. The 70s was when it went to colour, at first its mostly earthbound but there’s still some pretty interesting stories; later on it picks up more. And everyone loves Tom Baker. lol! The 80s start off more serious in tone, but then you do get some rather amusing episodes later on… the late 80s again is very imaginative and quite surreal sometimes.

I did think that Capaldi’s Doctor’s outfit needs something… maybe a cravat… I dunno. The outfit is good its just missing something. Oh I’m really quite in love the Seventh Doctor. lol! In McCoy’s first season he is much more clownish with just a hint of his darker persona, so I’m not sure if you would have watched a serial with him at his most manipulative. He really does change quite a bit in the next two seasons. I suggest serials such as ‘Curse of Fenric’, ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’, ‘Ghost Light’ (even though that one is rather confusing) and ‘Greatest Show in the Galaxy’. Absolutely adore the Seventh… I’d love to travel with him… and great, now everyone knows I’m a ‘fangirl’ of the Seventh Doctor…
On the notion of fezzes… I like ’em! Other than that the Eleventh’s outfit isn’t my favourite. I like Capaldi’s outfit though!

About the dark side of the Doctor… personally I think no other Doctor has ever been as dark and manipulative as the Seventh. Now don’t go just thinking about his first season, I’m not talking about those serials. He later, in season 25 and 26, becomes an incredibly mysterious and manipulative character; a dark chessmaster, playing games with his enemies and companions. Now I’m not saying I want Capaldi’s Doctor to be the same (because seriously, I adore the Seventh and love his uniqueness), but perhaps some similar traits would be interesting. The Seventh was very brooding and melancholy.
Oh and about the First Doctor; only at the beginning of the series was he rather uncaring about humans (the infamous rock scene/just running past Barbara/contemplating ejecting both Ian and Barbara out of the TARDIS). Because of his travels with Ian and Barbara he became more caring, and instead of being just a strict authority figure, in his later episodes the First was more of a eccentric scientist (though yes, he could still be pretty strict when he wanted to be!), with quite a sweet nature. But he still was quite alien, and very mysterious (hence why the First and Seventh are my favourite Doctors; they’re mysterious!). Ian and Barbara are two of the most important companions the Doctor has ever had, because they changed him into who he is today… without them, the Doctor would not be the same. And when they leave him, he does say he will miss them.

I’m rather happy with Capaldi’s Doctor’s style, I like the fact its more reminiscent of the old series.

11 February 2014 at 16:26 #25210I like the LOTR movies and I also like the books. Yeah I have a few complaints about the movie adaptation but nothing major. I also like The Hobbit movies (well, obviously can’t say for part 3 yet!); even though there are quite a few changes in it. Love Smaug, even though they’ve changed him into a Wyvern! lol And Radagast! I was so happy when I found out Radagast was going to be in the movies (despite the fact he doesn’t appear in book of The Hobbit), I had wanted him to be in LOTR… and then found out McCoy was playing him and I was even more happy!
Though why does Gandalf have Radagast’s staff in Fellowship? That’s a bit worrying… I hope they’re not going to change the book’s canon too much. Radagast was meant to appear in LOTR.

I just read a bit of the info on Quatermass posted in the first thread; it does indeed sound good, I’m not feeling up to it today (dunno if I could really concentrate on it right now) but I’m definitely considering giving it a watch. Had no idea parts of it were filmed live, and the fact the Radiophonic Workshop was involved. I love the radiophonics in Doctor Who, wish they used the old sound effects more often nowadays… just hearing the ‘Dalek Control Room’ effect’ from ‘The Daleks’ in a NuWho episode really adds to the atmosphere.
And that’s cool! But mentioning missing serials just makes me annoyed they’re still missing… I want more 60s Doctor Who to be found! lol

I do tend to like older movies/series, so I’m guessing I will probably like this Quatermass. I’ll have to find out what movie it was I watched, I thought it was very well done when watching it. You’ve now quite interested me in watching these episodes though. lol. If I do watch them I’ll post my thoughts on the matter in the appointed threads.

9 February 2014 at 14:26 #25136@barnable – Oh I like your ideas for the Twelfth Doctor; I too want him to be quite different from the more recent Doctors (that being said though, the Ninth was pretty different to the Tenth and Eleventh). But yes, a more serious Doctor I am hoping for too, and I hope the main focus is finding Gallifrey… very interested in knowing what the Time Lords are doing right now. In personality I want him to be more like the First, Third or Seventh. I was so happy Gallifrey had been saved, I really did not like the idea of it being gone in NuWho.
Now… they just need to sort out what the heck is going on with Skaro…

8 February 2014 at 23:28 #25123Have I posted in this thread before…? Errr… anyhow, I just wanted to say I’m rather excited to find out how Capaldi will portray the Doctor. Very happy we have an older Doctor again this time too, and personally… I want them to at least downplay the romantic aspect for the Doctor that the show has taken on recently… just not keen on it. I think it takes away some mystery to the character. Of course this is just my opinion.
And as Clara has been mentioned… I would also like to say I actually preferred Oswin. (Dalek Oswin!)

In the scene where all the Doctor’s arrive to save Gallifrey, there are two Seventh Doctors. 😀 At one point he’s wearing his outfit from the series (without coat) and at another he’s in his TVM outfit (and of course his hair is longer). All thirteen Doctors eh? Nah… there were just two Sevenths!

Just recently watched the only surviving Daleks Master Plan episodes (Part 2, 5 and 10)… really want to watch the entire serial, but alas…

And hello folks; haven’t posted in a few days. Anyhow… I’m currently (currently meaning over a period of a few days) watching Trial of a Time Lord (in other words, a full season of classic Doctor Who). Just finished watching Mindwarp. Afterwards I’m hoping to get my Revelation of the Daleks DVD to play properly… annnnd I’m planning on buying some Seventh Doctor episodes too. Oh and The Moonbase DVD arrived today, haven’t watched it yet though.

15 January 2014 at 15:17 #24332@cedarbranchtardis – Daleks are much more than that; they’ve just not been used that brilliantly in the series for quite a while (okay, Asylum of the Daleks had some pretty scary moments). What the next season needs to do (as I have heard rumors there will be a Dalek episode) is try and make them less expendable… once you have lots of Daleks being destroyed left and right, it takes away the intensity. That one Dalek by itself in ‘Dalek’ was more threatening than a whole army in the newer episodes.
@fiveroundsrapid – I collect Daleks, but I mentioned this already. Daleks are my favourite Doctor Who alien/monster. I have set myself the task of watching every Dalek episode (except missing episodes, need to get the audio). I’m getting there! I’ve watched all the classics (obviously not the missing serials) except Revelation because of the fault on the disc, just a few more from NuWho to go and the audios now.
14 January 2014 at 19:04 #24307@arbutus – Well I just watched it; its rather different than usual Doctor Who, but its okay. I think McGann would of been a great Doctor if he had a series… maybe they can make a special for him… he was great in that minisode.
And… lets just say I found the scene with the Seventh Doctor on the operating table hard to watch; it affected me to say the least. He’s very dear to me and to watch that was not easy. Apart from that; I liked his scene in the TARDIS beforehand at least.

I can understand how pricey certain collections can get as I am a Disney Pin Trader (trust me, this has a huge following) and some single pins can get up to prices over $1000. Not that I’d ever be able to afford something like that. Add the fact I’m also trying to collect the Doctor Who Classic DVDs and I can find it quite difficult to keep both collections going at the same time.
I also have a collection of Daleks… but haven’t added to it in ages. They’re not really expensive figures or anything (at least… I don’t think they are); but they’re my Daleks and although they’re currently all stored away for now; I’m hoping to put them on display. Thing is… I might end up buying more Daleks if I come across an item I find rather snazzy.
13 January 2014 at 21:28 #24275@arbutus – I love the Seventh Doctor; full of whimsy and fun… but oh so very manipulative. He’s actually one of the darkest Doctors; you can never quite tell his motives, there’s a sense that behind the clowning around he knows exactly what he’s doing. He’s clever, very clever, it seems like he knows things you cannot comprehend. Very mysterious… and yet hidden by his whimsical nature; such an interesting Doctor… of whom I adore. I agree about the ‘wistful sadness’ too, another trait that adds to his character’s mystery… almost melancholy. The style of most of his episodes are vastly different from previous Doctors too; I don’t find it a problem… even though I don’t recall watching any of his episodes when I were younger (though I probably did watch some eps of his), they feel nostalgic.
I’m planning on watching the McGann movie soon; I haven’t watched it in years… the fact that this is also when the Seventh regenerates is probably going to make me rather sad. When I watched it all those years ago I wasn’t a proper Whovian, so it didn’t really effect me… but now I know the Seventh; this isn’t going to be easy. Nowadays any regeneration story makes me sad anyway… might have to post about it after I’ve watched it again.

I would go on about why my favourites are my favourites too… but perhaps I should leave that to the Faces thread? Unless you want me rambling on in here, hahaha, I can ramble on when I want too. Glad there are others who can appreciate every Doctor. Currently my three favourites are First, Second and Seventh.

11 January 2014 at 22:18 #24223I was Dalek-ing today. I watched Death to the Daleks; found it rather odd… but kinda sweet? how a Dalek was frantically trying to protect another Dalek and saying that he’ll cover him. Also the Doctor was wearing my favourite Third Doctor outfit! Very nice!
And I also watched Asylum of the Daleks (which I haven’t watched before, I told you I need to catch up with Matt Smith’s episodes!) and I thought it was really well done. I kinda wish that Oswin had been the actual companion now… as a Dalek! Probably the sweetest Dalek ever? The only Dalek to help the Doctor? This is a odd post. Should I bother posting in the thread for this episode even though its on page two now?

@confusedpolarity – Yes indeed! And Tom Baker was also my favourite for quite a while (though even before him I guess it would of been Pertwee as he is my (considered) first Doctor), but gradually Hartnell became my favourite, and Troughton second favourite as I got to watch more 60s episodes. But I do like to make clear I like all the Doctors.
